K20 / 9T Owners: Be careful of water, not watertight

  • 0
  • 0

I saw the teardown of JerryRigEverything and thought the phone was water resistant but that Xiaomi just didn’t pay the certificate.Today, i dropped my phone (9T pro) in the sink and it’s dead now.

I opened it up and it had corrosion in the board to the right of the headphone jack. The headphone jack has a hole in it (i don’t mean the hole where you plug the headphones, i mean the plastic body of the connector has a hole), and it does not have any rubber to avoid water entering through it.

This is totally my fault, but i’m creating this post so other owners of these phones are careful about water anywhere near them.Maybe you dropped yours in water and you were lucky that nothing bad happened to it, but if water enters through the headphone jack you can have a bad time. So be careful.

(yes, i tried to clean the corrosion, helped a bit because it now at least tries to boot and reaches the fastboot, but not the recovery or the OS)

Just because the phone is held together with glue/sealant similarly to a water resistant device, doesn’t mean it would be a water resistant device.

I never believe these claims, electronic devices don’t mix with water period. Its why I always use a case.

Yes, the water was near the jack and the corrosion was just to the right of the connector, between the front speaker and the jack. The front speaker was dry and has this mesh that supposedly keeps water outside.

There are different levels of submerging. I would believe a IP X4 rating would be enough for this case. There wasn’t any pressure involved and quickly taken out again.

IP x7 btw, is protected against temporary submerging… Temporarily is about 30 minutes if I recall correctly. (haven’t my books with me right now)

Sure the seal in the camera is not much and most likely only against splash water.

But like OP also said… The corrosion occourd near the headphone jack and as you see in the video, there is a big hole on top of that connector.

The audio jack is not even saved against rain. Especially your holding the phone with the hole pointing upward.

Because a certification is expensive? If the headphone jack woulndt be, there would be a great chance OPs device woud still be alive.

When you opened the phone up was the headphone jack the only opening that the water went through?
I thought the reason for no waterproofing was the pop-up camera

There are a lot of people going around saying “Company XYZ doesn’t pay for certification but that phones is actually water resistant!”, you can see it on Reddit a lot. It’s not a bad idea to counter such misinformation.

I’ve seen that you already tried booting, but don’t turn it on today again, give the water some time to evaporate.

I think the popup actually has a rubber ring on it, and the ingress of water happened through the audio jack connector.

It’s a giant motorised part. And for the price of those devices they won’t engineer pricy measures for water resistance. (Yeah waterproof phones don’t really exist). And the camera is just made to resist rain, not submersion

As of minute[6:50](https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=409) you can see the popup camera is prepared against water: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd6KpX5MRtI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd6KpX5MRtI)

Or are waterproof phones missing speakers and connectors?
How can you even insert a sim card in to a waterproof device?
Ahh yes … Rubber seals … It is all about sealing the potential openings…

This is what a waterproof audio jack looks like: [http://web.tradekorea.com/product/600xxx20waterproof\_1.jpg](http://web.tradekorea.com/product/600/1538600/%203_5mm%20stereo%20phone%20jack%20mini%20usb%20connector%20waterproof_1.jpg)

On [5:42](https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342) you can see what is used inside the K20.

All water has minerals, they don’t mean just salt. Minerals deposit when the water evaporates

Yes but there OP says dropped in sink. Definitely not something water resistant are supposed to prevent.

Water resistance is not waterproof. All it means that if it rains and it’s in your pocket, it will be ok. However you can’t swim with it or drop in the bucket of water

    Please … Educate yourself …

I will just cite the answer of the automod of [r/MobileRepair](https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileRepair/)

“Somebody said “Rice”. If you’re talking about a water damaged device, I hope you know putting it in rice is just a myth. Rice is unable to pull moisture from inside your device. While waiting for the rice to do it’s magic trick you’re letting that moisture form corrosion. This corrosion can and will cause short circuits. If you truely would like to save your device please take it to a reputable repair shop immediately and do not try to charge or power your device on. Applying power will cause the corrosion to happen quicker by elecrolysis. If you have a removable battery please take it out.

Rice is the homeopathy of mobile repair or as [r/MobileRepair](https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileRepair/) calls it Holistic Phone Repair.”

It is jo coincidence there is more than “IP68”
Submerging for like a minute would perfectly possible with just a little more rubber, or to be precise a waterproof audio jack.

IP x8 is tested for permanent submerging…
IP x4 would have most likely helped surviving.

But for being able to label your device (at least in EU countys) you have to let it have tested or at least documentation about you tested it properly while being approved to do so. (at least for EMC, since it stated in the DIN EN for electronic devices, I believe it is the same for IP rating.)

I think the popup actually has a rubber ring on it, and the ingress of water happened through the audio jack connector.

Hopefully… Sadly this is still a much used “lifehack”

Letting a mobile lying for 48h… Is most likely dry anyway. Especially if a malfunction will cause it heating up 😉

Nope. They claimed it is water resistant never the less. An Indonesian reviewer (like many other reviewer) submerged it in water for 30 seconds. Few hours after recording it started having ghost touches and eventually died.

Luckily it’s “fixed” once the water dried out of the phone

Exactly, that’s the hole where the ingress happened and to the right there is the connector which got corrosion, and the board under that connector.

I’m a phone repairer, I know you’ve already turned it on, but to whoever is reading this and owns a phone, if this happens to you, first thing you do is turn it off, wrap it in a towel and leave it off for 2 days in an airing cupboard, or somewhere warm. If you have any silica packs, put them round the phone inside the towel too.

The ingress didn’t happen through the popup camera, which has a rubber joint to prevent water getting inside.

Left is the front opening where the headphones get pluged in.Right is the end of the connector where the last piece of the connector rests.

In this video there is the actual used piece: [https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342](https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342)Quite a different design… Wouln’t have expected that.

Well, Zack successfully recovered an Apple Watch that has been submerged for 9 months just by cleaning the contacts with iso-propyl alcohol and replacing the battery. Since the Mi 9T Pro does have some water protection, I would suggest you open the phone to wipe the moisture and clean all contacts from corrosion. A battery replacement could save it, so it wouldn’t hurt to try.
