I saw the teardown of JerryRigEverything and thought the phone was water resistant but that Xiaomi just didn’t pay the certificate.Today, i dropped my phone (9T pro) in the sink and it’s dead now.
I opened it up and it had corrosion in the board to the right of the headphone jack. The headphone jack has a hole in it (i don’t mean the hole where you plug the headphones, i mean the plastic body of the connector has a hole), and it does not have any rubber to avoid water entering through it.
This is totally my fault, but i’m creating this post so other owners of these phones are careful about water anywhere near them.Maybe you dropped yours in water and you were lucky that nothing bad happened to it, but if water enters through the headphone jack you can have a bad time. So be careful.
(yes, i tried to clean the corrosion, helped a bit because it now at least tries to boot and reaches the fastboot, but not the recovery or the OS)
I mean, this phone has a popup camera. What were you really expecting? RIP to your phone
There are a lot of people going around saying “Company XYZ doesn’t pay for certification but that phones is actually water resistant!”, you can see it on Reddit a lot. It’s not a bad idea to counter such misinformation.
>Today, i dropped my phone (9T pro) in the sink and it’s dead now.
I’ve seen that you already tried booting, but don’t turn it on today again, give the water some time to evaporate.
try cleaning thoroughly with ipa the board
I fully agree, didn’t mean to make fun of OP but I just thought that nobody pays mind to those unproven nonsense claims
THANKS, I was always so curious and you’ve now prevented me from doing something very dumb
Edit: this is 3 months after i made this comment, i got drunk and splashed water on one of the ports, now the same is happening to me
Just because the phone is held together with glue/sealant similarly to a water resistant device, doesn’t mean it would be a water resistant device.
It’s definitely water resistant to some extent.. but not water proof.. There’s a difference..
Why would there be salt in the sink though?
All water has minerals, they don’t mean just salt. Minerals deposit when the water evaporates
Good to know. But um. I don’t think all have this hole.
When you opened the phone up was the headphone jack the only opening that the water went through?
I thought the reason for no waterproofing was the pop-up camera
As JRE said: No phone is waterproof
Yes but there OP says dropped in sink. Definitely not something water resistant are supposed to prevent.
To me if a company doesn’t say it’s certified against water I’d do my best even if they say they have seals and protection !!! So sorry for this trouble you have and hope you get up and running with your device soon !!! Be careful out there
I spilled coffee, but it was in the case (rugged shield).
Works well by then.
only the 8 has it. The 7 Pro was one of those supposedly ‘water-proof’ phones, like hinted at above
There’s a freaking popup camera what the fuck did you expect ?
Technically no phone is waterproof. They are water resistant though.
A water resistent phone should be able to survive this without harm. Unfortunately the mi 9t isn’t 🙁
I’m a phone repairer, I know you’ve already turned it on, but to whoever is reading this and owns a phone, if this happens to you, first thing you do is turn it off, wrap it in a towel and leave it off for 2 days in an airing cupboard, or somewhere warm. If you have any silica packs, put them round the phone inside the towel too.
My wife accidentally dropped her phone in the tub while taking a bath. We both thought that the phone was a goner. She fished it out and wiped it dry and it was fine. I guess we got lucky.
My K20Pro ended up falling out of my hands at the beach and was in the water for approximately 5 seconds and it didn’t skip a beat. This happened last September.
Almost the same thing happened to my phone, for 2 times I got the screen splashed with huge amounts of water while taking a bath. Wiped it off with dry towel and still working fine as ever
What about rice
Aren’t your supposed to put it inside rice?
You should try burying it in Rice for 48 hrs For Faster Effect, worked well on some of my phones who are water damaged also
The 8 pro is certified ip 68 while the regular 8 isn’t or in some case it has the certification only through some carriers
Probably a cheaper alternative that everyone actually has
Water proof or not, I always keep the phone far from water as much as possible. Started from the Sony Xperia days on.
Thank you for a heartwarming and funny story. Did he like taking it into the ocean?
Nope. They claimed it is water resistant never the less. An Indonesian reviewer (like many other reviewer) submerged it in water for 30 seconds. Few hours after recording it started having ghost touches and eventually died.
Luckily it’s “fixed” once the water dried out of the phone
Doesn’t absorb water as much as silica gel but is better than putting it on the table
Which mi 9T is not
Try to put it in Bag of rice last time it worked for me Xperia Z
Water resistance is not waterproof. All it means that if it rains and it’s in your pocket, it will be ok. However you can’t swim with it or drop in the bucket of water
I never believe these claims, electronic devices don’t mix with water period. Its why I always use a case.
Well, Zack successfully recovered an Apple Watch that has been submerged for 9 months just by cleaning the contacts with iso-propyl alcohol and replacing the battery. Since the Mi 9T Pro does have some water protection, I would suggest you open the phone to wipe the moisture and clean all contacts from corrosion. A battery replacement could save it, so it wouldn’t hurt to try.
dude this phone have popup camera, it is logical that it is not waterproof
Mine went to the laundry and I even try to turn it on (because idk it was wet), I tought it was completely dead, but I cleaned it from inside and it went from this

To this:

Now is alive but I think the display is broken because isn’t showing anything (I ear sounds and vibrations)
Just to show how these thing can look from insde of the phone: [https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1tpKlXvQxxxert-6-feet.jpg\_q50.jpg](https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1tpKlXvQypeRjt_bXq6yZuXXaW/10PCS-3-5-MM-kopfh-rer-buchse-Audio-buchse-PJ-342-Oberfl-che-montiert-6-feet.jpg_q50.jpg)
Left is the front opening where the headphones get pluged in.Right is the end of the connector where the last piece of the connector rests.
In this video there is the actual used piece: [https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342](https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342)Quite a different design… Wouln’t have expected that.
Here is what a paterproofed one looks like:[http://web.tradekorea.com/product/xxxector%20waterproof\_1.jpg](http://web.tradekorea.com/product/600/1538600/%203_5mm%20stereo%20phone%20jack%20mini%20usb%20connector%20waterproof_1.jpg)
Because a certification is expensive? If the headphone jack woulndt be, there would be a great chance OPs device woud still be alive.
Please … Educate yourself …
I will just cite the answer of the automod of [r/MobileRepair](https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileRepair/)
“Somebody said “Rice”. If you’re talking about a water damaged device, I hope you know putting it in rice is just a myth. Rice is unable to pull moisture from inside your device. While waiting for the rice to do it’s magic trick you’re letting that moisture form corrosion. This corrosion can and will cause short circuits. If you truely would like to save your device please take it to a reputable repair shop immediately and do not try to charge or power your device on. Applying power will cause the corrosion to happen quicker by elecrolysis. If you have a removable battery please take it out.
Rice is the homeopathy of mobile repair or as [r/MobileRepair](https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileRepair/) calls it Holistic Phone Repair.”
As of minute[6:50](https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=409) you can see the popup camera is prepared against water: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd6KpX5MRtI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd6KpX5MRtI)
Or are waterproof phones missing speakers and connectors?
How can you even insert a sim card in to a waterproof device?
Ahh yes … Rubber seals … It is all about sealing the potential openings…
This is what a waterproof audio jack looks like: [http://web.tradekorea.com/product/600xxx20waterproof\_1.jpg](http://web.tradekorea.com/product/600/1538600/%203_5mm%20stereo%20phone%20jack%20mini%20usb%20connector%20waterproof_1.jpg)
On [5:42](https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342) you can see what is used inside the K20.
It’s a giant motorised part. And for the price of those devices they won’t engineer pricy measures for water resistance. (Yeah waterproof phones don’t really exist). And the camera is just made to resist rain, not submersion
Not cheaper than a new phone …
No shit Sherlock. It has moving parts, of course it won’t resist water
It is jo coincidence there is more than “IP68”
Submerging for like a minute would perfectly possible with just a little more rubber, or to be precise a waterproof audio jack.
IP x8 is tested for permanent submerging…
IP x4 would have most likely helped surviving.
But for being able to label your device (at least in EU countys) you have to let it have tested or at least documentation about you tested it properly while being approved to do so. (at least for EMC, since it stated in the DIN EN for electronic devices, I believe it is the same for IP rating.)
There are different levels of submerging. I would believe a IP X4 rating would be enough for this case. There wasn’t any pressure involved and quickly taken out again.
IP x7 btw, is protected against temporary submerging… Temporarily is about 30 minutes if I recall correctly. (haven’t my books with me right now)
Sure the seal in the camera is not much and most likely only against splash water.
But like OP also said… The corrosion occourd near the headphone jack and as you see in the video, there is a big hole on top of that connector.
The audio jack is not even saved against rain. Especially your holding the phone with the hole pointing upward.
Hopefully… Sadly this is still a much used “lifehack”
Letting a mobile lying for 48h… Is most likely dry anyway. Especially if a malfunction will cause it heating up 😉
Of course, that’s why I made a little rubber stopper to put inside the headphone jack since I use Bluetooth headphones, I just can’t trust big holes like that.
Joe Rogan said that?
I never heard of a waterproof phone from Xiaomi. Who told you that?
just get a used phone with cracked screen or something and put them together to one working phone. did this a few times to save money
Wow.. thanks, i thought my mi 9t is waterproof too..
Had one lying around too. After reading this post I decided to do so too. Better save than sorry
Lesson learned anyway.
Rice will work to a certain degree but it’s not great, and takes too long.
Yes, when i did tear down all the phone it was too late, it already had corrosion.
I think the popup actually has a rubber ring on it, and the ingress of water happened through the audio jack connector.
I think the popup actually has a rubber ring on it, and the ingress of water happened through the audio jack connector.
Exactly, that’s the hole where the ingress happened and to the right there is the connector which got corrosion, and the board under that connector.
Yes, the water was near the jack and the corrosion was just to the right of the connector, between the front speaker and the jack. The front speaker was dry and has this mesh that supposedly keeps water outside.
[https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342](https://youtu.be/Sd6KpX5MRtI?t=342) here is the hole, on the top of the connector.
The ingress didn’t happen through the popup camera, which has a rubber joint to prevent water getting inside.
I feel your loss. I’ve only lost 1 phone to moisture damage thankfully.
it has some protection but please, this phone has moving parts, it is impossible to make it waterproof
Oh yea.. I see.
It does, but it’s meant for dust protection. I wouldn’t trust it to hold up against pressure by water
Yeah, had to replace my display few months ago due to liquid damage. Cost me 10k.
Hey, any update? was it salvageable?
