Computational photography is a scientific field. NASA can’t update Kepler Telescope every year to higher and higher MP, all it does is a lot of image processing. Google Pixel and iPhones are great examples that shine on how to get the best images from a low 12 MP camera.
Edit: Kepler Telescope has only 95MP.
I mean it seems from a lot of tests that i’ve seen, that there are benefits to higher Megapixel counts too when it’s using Pixel Binning, very clear shots that look better zoomed in for an example than their 12mp counterparts.
And I for sure wish that Xiaomi and the likes of them would work more on computational photography and they probably will eventually, but until they’ve got that down, if they increase megapixel count which still produces a good, clear image, i’m not complaining. Seeing progression in hardware as well as software is nice, doesn’t have to be one or the other.

These 64/108mp sensors shoot in much lesser resolution by default! In fact, each pixel’s size is bigger than in finest IMX363 sensor which is used in latest Pixels. That’s because the image sensor is larger too.
In recent reviews it was shown that 64mp mode is able to capture more small details, especially if they’re away. So there’s some meaning there you don’t take into account.

Pixel binning has other advantages such as better HDR algorithms. We have seen better and better contrast and color accuracy from midrangers ever since these 48MP and 64MP sensors became widespread.

Just in case you didn’t know, GCam regularly gets ported to Xiaomi phones. So would you rather have a shitty sensor and small sensor when GCam gets ported? I, for one, would rather have the hardware at the ready since software literally can be developed later on but the hardware will forever be like that in the lifetime of the phone.
I’ve used and been using GCam for quite a while (I used to have a OP6T and I switched to a Mi 9T Pro) and GCam isn’t really a seamless experience, there’s always this and there that isn’t working perfectly, as it’s still a community developed thing. I’m tired of all of this so I ended up going back to regular shooter.

It isn’t because it’s a port but time will come when it will be as close to first party as it can and when that time comes you’ll *wish* you had the hardware to take advantage of such a software. Point is even without GCam, even the most perfect first party software won’t mean anything if we don’t have the hardware to take advantage of. Think about it this way, would you rather use a Linux distro on a Pentium 4 or Windows on a Ryzen 7 3600x knowing Linux would be more stable than Windows?

Honestly pretty much every single pixel since the second has been out of time design wise and they always cut corners in specs when the phone is already expensive (not always the greatest screen, not the fastest storage, only 4gigs of RAM when competitors already has 6 or 8, shitty battery, no real fast charging etc)
These kind of stuff would’ve been acceptable when they were at nexus prices but at pixel price it’s definitely not okay

Im maybe mistaken but these high megapixel cameras are made to do pixel binning and they can’t actually create 100 megapixel photos, they just cram all those pixels for marketing purposes, so if they have a 48/64/100 megapixel mode its probably just an upscaled regular picture.

Pixel binning makes a big difference, having more pixels to capture light and composite into a lower resolution image should improve image quality.
Right, your main camera should be your wide angle. People take pictures to remember the experience, if you want a close up, I’m sure you’d be fine zooming in. It should still be a great resolution still, obviously. But wide angle cameras just need more resolution to get the same details.
I’d rather have cameras with equal amount of details on a square cm of pixels, than whatever a lot of these budget phones are doing. Now, I’m basically using the main camera, and taking a panorama, if I really want to remember the experience. Because the wide angle camera is joke.
Several real camera systems have reached the limit for megapixels cramped in a sensor. A m4/3 system is capped around 20mp, with a sensor 4x bigger that a mobile phone uses.
So… Anything more them 12-16 MP is a waste on mobile phones. Just for mkt.

I know that sensor like IMX586 from Sony combined 4 pixels with 0.8 micron each into 1 pixel which size 1.6 micron. I never seen that mentioned from Xiaomi though.

Yeah, actually out of 4 pixels that are to be binned into 1, two pixels are used for a long exposure and two others are utilized for a short exposure. The resulting image can have better dynamic range without the need to lengthen the capture time. Another advantage of this technique is that HDR photos of relatively fast moving objects are less blurry due to shorter exposure time.

Arithmetically speaking you’re right but I doubt about the possibility of it, there must be some hardware limitations for that. Quad Bayer filter cell contains only 4 pixels. HTC’s ultrapixels sucked for that reason, they fully ignored hardware details. I guess Sony is working on something different from Quad Bayer to introduce to the market later.
That’s just how these sensors were first described, 48 divides by 2×2 (4) into 12 and 108 divides by 3×3 (9) into 12 as well.
Right, I am sure there is a reason for this, the wide angle in such a slim device seems to always require a small sensor. I’m thinking a lens that curved must require a lot secondary lenses to flatten and to remain sharp with a large enough aperture they must have to use a tiny sensor.
You can try the one for MI9t or ukiller xml, one of those 4-5 should work for sure! & not to worry as you can change the xml anytime without any risk to cam,data etc
No you’re wrong lol, then the megapixel count wouldn’t just be a marketing thing, it’d literally be a lie. Look at the Vivo Nex 3 for example take a look at some of the pictures shot on that phone in 64mp mode in daylight, it’s insane detail. I have to disagree with everyone ranting about the megapixels. They make the sensor larger so you’ll get more light, if you want it to, then it’s a really good 12mp sensor. And on my mix 2s with a regular 12 there’s often so much daylight that my phone is shooting at as low as 1/4000 just to avoid underexposing. You’ll have no handshake unless you really try to at just 1/60 of a second, so in situations like that it would make a lot of sense to have a 64 or even 100mp sensor, it wouldn’t compromise on lighting in the sense that’d I’d get noise, it would just be a way sharper image. And it’s not like computational photography will be compromised on by having more megapixels, it’ll just take the phone a bit longer to process.

This is stupid. I would rather a high resolution camera that software can then optimise to a lower resolution. Not being able to crop 12mp pixel photos is a huge disadvantage no matter how they look
I think it’s a sales pitch thing. And most people compare profile cameras, so you have to fight on that ground, rather than with a ultra wide vs a profile picture camera. It’s a losing battle so to speak.

Maybe, but ultra wide lenses bubble out, so they have to keep that lens bellow another piece of glass – and so the aperture is much smaller (less light) which means more noise and you end up not making use of the sensor altogether.

Unfortunately the pixel size is still 0.8um and the pixel combining trick doesn’t work as well as normal sensors with a larger pixel size. Reviews haves shown that the RN7 has less detail compared to older phones even if the megapixel count is higher.

This ultra pixel concept is really interesting. I like what Nokia done with 808 Pureview, that was so genius of them by using more pixel to eliminate the noise and increase details.
I’d agree with you, if wasn’t for the fact that Xiaomi will start selling new models with a 108mp camera next year after they have tested the waters.
Tech pioneers usually have either really expensive tech or if they try to cut costs it’s more of a public beta than anything.
Better wait for future implementations where Xiaomi knows what it’s doing with it’s software. (even the Mi9 had a buggy camera at launch)

Apple and google are indeed showing the importance of the software. And they are both doing a great job with the recent release of both their top flagship phones.
I think the problem is that if your profile camera is better quality than your wide, you’d want to take your picture with your profile picture. So it’s about relative quality.
FYI 108MP sensor should actually bring significant image quality improvements as it’s quite big. It will work as 27MP anyway.

Quad-Bayer array has the same color filter for squares of 2×2 pixels, thus:

They (Samsung) could have produced a different filter array (say 3×3), but it’s impossible to switch between 27 and 12 MP other than via (sub-optimal) interpolation.
If it were pixel-binning on a standard Bayer pattern, like this:
RGRGRGRG
GBGBGBGB etc.
then it would have been easier, but then you can’t do on-sensor HDR.

Correct, Pureview had a sensor with an “usual” Bayer array.
If you put it side by side, 108 does look better. Quality does get affected by increasing of the MP. Adding all those cameras dramatically improves the quality, with the telephoto it makes zoom look way way better at 2x and 5x, instead of getting blurry. The macro is actually amazing as well as the wide-angle. They did BOTH, their revolutionizing the technology first and coming back to improve the already magnificent software. Why would you develop software for hardware that isn’t even there? They made a good choice.
note – it’s not the just the amount of MP that changed, theres many other things the new sensor improved on.
