I mean, maybe you shouldn’t. BUT it’s HELLA (yeah I even used the word ‘hella’ which i never do) more compelling to try out new technology for $999 than $1980 or $2600 or whatever the Huawei Mate X will cost.
Like $999 is still a pricey phone, especially from a company like Xiaomi, but if it seems as compelling when it arrives as it does now, I’m probably gonna sell my Huawei P30 Pro and jump into this. It might not be GREAT, but if it can be a good enough phone together with the option to fold it out to a tablet-size thing, then we’re good to go!
Do I really need one? (:
Of course I do!
its not overpriced, apple knows its market. its market is not us. when a phone is overpriced, no one will buy it. apple knows the middle ground between “overpriced” and “people still buy this anyway”
I think screen protector films will be a must with these things
And change then regularly
Nah it’s true, few first gen products don’t suck ass
The first iPhone didn’t even have apps, even old PDA had apps
If that kind of plastic existed you would already see it in time of other applications like wallpaper-like solar panels you can stick anywhere
You can already use dual apps, that’s not the problem. The screen breaking from the constant stretching and getting scratched up because it’s plastic, that’s the real problem
Man that was like 20 years ago, I thought we were going that stuff sooner heh
> cheaper than an iPhone Xs. Which is amazing value
How the fuck is saying it’s cheaper than one of the most overpriced pieces of technology worth anything
I had the same hopes about the screens being flawless at the fold points, but when I saw all the videos, not one of the manufacturers overcame that issue. I think they will get it right eventually, but they’re risking creating an awful impression with the first gen units. I would’ve preferred that they had worked longer on researching a proper solution.
to be honest, when the industry started talking about foldables, I was under the impression that they were going to come out with some new alien tech for the displays that keeps them flat at the bending point. I was really hoping for some special kind of plastic that can stretch and restore its position. Apparently I was being naive and this wasn’t the case.
I am still hoping for something better in the next generations. There is room for a lot of improvement (especially given the prices they are asking for)

The creases, bulges and wrinkles in the screen are alarming. You see them in the marketing videos from Samsung and Huawei, and it should be making people more than a bit concerned. I think it’s bad enough that it could permanently kill foldable phones in its first generation.
Probably not. First gen tech always has problems, and take a generation or two to actually get good.
I’d probably get it so I can review it on my channel but the reality is that after using a Mi 9 for a week I missed my Poco F1 so I’m doubting I’ll enjoy using this. Software is such an important part of the experience and MIUI in stock form isn’t that great of a software experience. I’ll be happy when it’s got a stable TWRP and 3 day bootloader unlock time 🤣 till that happens I’m good
When the competitors are selling the same tech for 2 grand, it’s certainly not. This is is a new technology that is just gaining traction. Xiaomi knows this and I think they will treat this phone just like the original Mi Mix, which was sold as a prototype phone.
Whcih they streamlined on the next generation.
I like the move to foldable, but they need a solution for the plastic screen now(since its flexible now) it scratches way to easy..
I guess Scottish people already do

and a new pasta is born?
At least the 5g mix 3
maybe even iphone xr
or just Mi Yoga
Mi Yoga Flex
They just need replaceable skins so when they are dropped the scratches can replaced by changing the skins. It really doesn’t seem like a big deal. Of course with companies that make phones so slippery they feel like a wet bar of soap…
$850 is still a lot for a Xiaomi
Everyone: 5g and foldable screens will be too expensive to ever catch on
Xiaomi: here’s a 5g phone and a foldable phone both cheaper than an iPhone Xs
You don’t want to jump…. not yet. The creases are, lets say very present and the reliability remains to be seen. Ofcourse as a new tech they are crazy expensive. I estimate that I will be getting a foldable on their second maybe third generation.
Half of the price still double of the price of xiaomi current flagship phone. Gosh…do we really need a foldable phone?
Please be Mi Flex lol
Look back and try to remember how much the first generation of any tech product sucked… because this is it.
Sorry for being blunt but imho this is beta stuff.
The new Android will support it, but apps wil have to adjust as well. It is a bit of a ‘too soon’ for now but in theory you’ll have a tablet sized screen which still fits in your pocket.
The real problem I think is going to be software — support really isn’t there yet, either from the OS or the apps.
Obviously the manufacturers are going to have *something* in place when you can actually buy these things, but I’m sure it’s going to be buggy and incomplete.
glass is kinda bendable at very very very very (have I said very) low thicknesses. Imagine what that does to your yield? They’ve had alot of trouble developing this glass because of this – it’s really hard to process and move around a huge thin film of glass around without it breaking.
ho ok I hadn’t seen the little arrow.
thanks you and have a nice day !
Well they have to, they’re the most known tempered glass company and so far, they’re a bit behind as far as screens for foldable go.
I’m sure the likes of Huawei, Xiaomi and Samsung would love to lose the plastic displays and switch 5o more durable glass if they could get one in a reasonable timeframe. So yeah, first few tens would just have to do with the plastic.
Now I wouldn’t automatically take that as a massive con just yet. We don’t know how durable the material they use for the screen is so far. Some of the most rugged and outdoor resistant phones have plastic screens for shatter resistance and they usually don’t scratch that easy. On some of them you can even buff out few of the shallower scratches.
Back to 4:3 format, no thanks.
Edit: Trifold would be nice.
Unless they can make them at least as scratch-proof as the latest gorilla glass i would never buy this kind of tech. I rather carry around 2 devices and avoid permanent scratches on my screen than having 1 single device that i have to be extremely careful with.
Yeah tell that to Corning which is developing bendable glass atm:

Select the blank one, then click the edit button.
You’ll see a small arrow on the top right, click on it and you’ll see a text box. Go on and enter your user flair and save
thanks for respond.
we need tout contact a mod for r/Xiaomi ? because i can’t change m’y flair (or im dumbass) see here : https://imgur.com/a/94YCl3d
Screens on these foldable phones are plastic. Let that settle in.
That’s called flair and can be changed/edited from the desktop site as well as official app.
Steps to change flair in the mobile app:-
Go to the subreddit’s front page -> Three dots on top right ( Placement may differ according to your model) -> Change user Flair -> Edit button on Top right -> Type in your flair and save.
Not really, you can change the user flair using the official mobile app too.
Go to the subreddit’s front page -> Three dots on top right ( Placement may differ according to your model) -> Change user Flair -> Edit button on Top right -> Type in your flair and save.
The first foldable tech tablet thingy I saw was on a movie called Red Planet. I guess we’re getting closer but this is way too early for a reliable device. Right now the main issue is creases. Companies haven’t found a way just yet.
Hahaha love this!
But that means that this will be cheaper than an iPhone Xs. Which is amazing value
It’s called ‘flair’. I think it’s only available for Desktop/Web for now.

Excuse me, this has nothing to do with it, but how do you put your smartphone to the right of your nickname on r/Xiaomi?
Sure but the fold is silly expensive so it’s still going to cost a LOT
TBH I don’t know if I should jump into this, folding phones look like some really early tech and I’m not sure the first models will be resilient enough to daily like a regular one.
