you know how you can send wifi signals?

from what I understand, this is just that on steroids except it’s used for energy instead of information

You don’t need 3 “base points”, you might just need 3 antenna on one basepoint. Look at wifi beamforming

But on your last point yes undoubtedly it will waste massive amounts of energy

I was talking about regular USB 3.0 ports which follow the standard such as these you will find on a typical desktop or laptop computer. Of course it’s possible to deliver a lot more current using a USB port, that’s what USB chargers do after all. I was simply trying to put into perspective how much 5W of power actually is.

    hmm…
radio frequency is also energy, but a very different type. They use electricity frequency systems in railroad signalization, but that does not make the current targeted in physical lines, let alone targeted in a broadcast wave… I can understand how radio frequency waves pass through us – and I really don’t care about the health arguments concerning this. I really don’t understand how an electricity wave would pass through us without impacting us…

The best analogy would be zipping. a zipped exe is no more an exe, it then becomes an exe when unzipped by the other side. This should be how this work.. AC is a weird thing though, I don’t really get it.. If they found a way to tame it as such, that’s really a breakthrough…

I have heard of plans to implement this in public transportation. The idea is to maintain your battery or have it discharge at a slower pace so you don’t have to plug it in as often.

Charging a large number of phones in a public place is the only way it makes sense, otherwise it is indeed wasted electricity.

If we’re following that logic, the first man to name a concept/thought owns that idea… It’s not that I don’t like the idea, it’s just that we would get nothing done that way, noone would dare to introduce new things to the market because “what if someone else thought of it first”.

There’s a reason why Vivo never got further than the prototype, and the reason was that the technology and knowledge just wasn’t there

from what i read it should be able to output 5w even on multiple devices and with objects between the two on a few meter radius, not as fast as current charging but it’s something if they manage to commercialize it

    USB 3 is 900mA@5v iirc. Usb C is 5A@20v

This is semantics however, people have used overcharged usb3 sockets the last 8 years hauling out 27w in quickcharge specs.

I do agree its impressive. Which is why my comment said as such

Knowing how inefficient wireless charging is, the box will probably be a portable radiator and draw 200 watts. I’m sorry, but i’d rather have a super-fast wired charging system than an inefficient charger that has speeds straight outta 2009.

It may not sound like a lot, but 5W is actually a quite impressive amount of power. Just to give some perspective, a regular USB 3.0 port is limited to 900 mA, that means whatever you connect to it is going to be receiving a maximum of 4.5 W. Yet, many people use their laptop to charge their phone if they are on the go.

This has been around for a while, but from what I remember the power it charges with can only maybe slow down the battery drain even at just a few cm away from the source.

Maybe they improved it a lot this time. I wonder how dangerous would it be?

    This looks bullshit.

First if it is spreading the EM energy in the whole space it’s located.
You have an around 25cm² coil in your phone. If the device spreads the energy evenly, and it has to in order to provide even charging across the space, even in a 1m distance it has to cover a 12m² area. This means that 99.98% of the energy is wasted, so if you want to charge your phone with 1 watt, than that means the charger is using 4.8kW and that is an ideal situation in vacuum when energy is not lost due to the medium. First that is a lot of power, second I wouldn’t want to be next to something that is emitting 4.8kW of EM energy. Of course it can be optimized but you can see how much radiated energy is required.

Second, if it has some kind of a smart phone tracking technology it’s still using up a lot of power. Firstly you need at least 3 “base points” in a relatively small enclosure if you want to locate something in 3D in order to concentrate the energy to that spot. There are various technologys you could do this with but I assume they will use bluetooth or uwb radio connection. The latter will be more precise, but there are only a handful of phones that has an uwb chip in them and even they aren’t utilizing it at the moment. The problem is if the base points are really close together, than the distance differeneces to the phones will be really short thus making it impossible to determine if the received communication signal is the real one or a reflected one. The other problem is that you will have all kinds of really wide band noise because of the wireless charging that makes the communication almost impossible. Of course you could send the energy and communicate in bursts but it still wastes a lot of power on the charger side and now your phone has to constantly report its location which uses up a lot of battery.

They might have found some kind of an optimized solution but I just can’t see how.

It’s honestly nice to see this technology, but I don’t think it’s going to be very healthy and the waste of energy will probably be huge.

The basepoint means 3 point where you measure the distance. It doesn’t matter whether it’s 3 antennas connected to the same device or 3 device with 1 antenna.

My point was that these points will be too close together to get an accurate measurement and the more inaccurate your positioning, the more energy you must use.

If this TRULY works then it’ll change more than the smartphone market.

Wireless sound bars and speakers that require no “recharge” just pair up and be charged forever… Earbuds constantly charging via reverse charge from a master device…

Tbh, if they can get the efficiency high enough, we will probably be seeing a technological revolution

That’s what I was referring when I talked about the phone tracking solution. It turned out I was right that’s how they do it. The problem with that was the probably quite poor real time tracking. With the antennas which are basically the previously mentioned “receiver base points”, meaning we basically calculate arrival of localization packets transmitted by the phone to the antenna and from the time differences of the arrival you can calculate the position of the transmitter.

Now the problem which you can clearly see is if the antennas are really close together the time driffrences will be really short. Since there is always constant measuring errors because we are not in a vacuum and EM waves are bouncing everywhere and there are objects in the way which slow down the signals, the smaller the time differences the more significant is the impact of these errors, therefore the location will be less precise.

Now there could be a solution when you just get the direction with the antennas and you do a so called two-way ranging with the phone and one of the antennas and you get the distance. The problem with that is that the phone constantly has to send and receive high energy packets and that will use up a lot of energy in the phone. I’m talking about 50-100mA constant power consumption. That’s really significant to the 4-5000mAh battery.

So you either get a phoen that’s constantly has to drain it’s battery while chargimg it or you get a less precise location. The less precise the location the more space you have to cover with the charging EM waves. The more space you have to cover, the more energy you just waste. This energy will transform to heat amd that’s really not healthy to anything in the room, especially you. Just imagine that the normal temperature of the human body is 36-37°C and at 38°C you have a fever and you feel like shit. Now imagine that your body is constantly bombarded with EM waves that turn into heat.

Since xiaomi has a lot resources and they probably figured something out I believe that they could achieve this wireless charging however I doubt that it’s going to be reliable.
