Not Xiaomi per se but Mi specifically. But you’re right. Redmi diluted the brand. Now Redmi can receive high end, mid end and low end products being its own brand.
It’s not. While it’s not exactly what causes it, Nokia and even Pixel users are also faced the problem. The former faced with battery draining issues and reception. The latter faced with performance issues like what MKBHD said in his ‘Why I don’t use Pixel’ video.
About the ads, I don’t see any issues at all even I’m using global rom. Even if someday I can’t bear with it, I just go and format other custom roms or even MIUI EU.
People bloated about these ads issues when they can just tick some button in apps and poof, gone forever. They’re even mentioned how to do it in the FAQ. Or they can just avoid using any native Mi apps like Mi Video, Music, etc.
I still prefer the ads, which I can switch off, to the updates which cripple my phone, and gods know how these will be fixed. I don’t give a 2 cent whether these issues are from google, Xiaomi or the bad weather while I’m updating.
Most of Android one users forgot that the OG of pure android, Nexus, were the devices focused to both set standards for other manufacturers to follow (like Nexus 7 to set standards for 7″ and 8″ tablet, low cost but good spec) and for ‘developers’ and ‘power users’ to test these devices at the purest while risking bugs and other issues. That’s why it cost so low, you’re basically a tester for them, exchange for the lower cost of the handsets. Sound familiar?
I had Nexus7 before. I witnessed how every android version updates started to pile up on the device. It finally gave up when I updated to Lolipop as the flash memory fried itself due to the heat issue since the KitKat update. That’s why I selected RN5 over A1 at the time of purchase with A1 was $40 cheaper.
> I stop giving a damn about these rubbish android version update since I saw the problem with A1 about their Oreo update and now A2 with Pie update.
The “rubbish” in those updates to A1 and A2 is because of Xiaomi. Not because of Google/Android.
At least those “rubbish” Android updates didn’t bring ads across the system, so there’s that.
So now there are Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco phones, but all are Xiaomi?
What’s their official website then ?
Maybe if it’s a sub brand they’ll be able to give it more than one update, or even a single one.
They could want the Redmi brand to focus on camera seeing that Redmi Pro 2 might have 48mpx.
What’s the point? It’s still Xiaomi
I hope that the Redmi prices stay reasonable and won’t climb up just because it is not the budget range of Xiaomi phones anymore…
That was the big announcement? A rename that isn’t even a rename? That’s less than nothing.
😂😂😂
The reason why I put 363 is only Xiaomi followers automatically get it 😉
They could have had a brand named SD625 with all those line of products.
636 🙂
Now it’s 363
I think they have MiPay or something? Not sure.
Do they have a payment system like wechat in China?
My guess is that this is to follow the same strategy as oppo and Huawei. Xiaomi wants to be a premium brand, and by separating (just the brand, i highly doubt that this will result in any internal organisational changes) the xiaomi brand image can be more premium.
They basically use the same tactics with many of their products within their ecosystem, just put ‘by Xiaomi’ at the end of the product names. Now everyone know Poco is a sub-brand of Xiaomi because of the branded ‘Pocophone by Xiaomi’. Remember, they have their sub-brand like Mijia (‘Jia’ means home in Chinese 家) and many more.
This tactic also used by Huawei first. They had a series of Honor before, named Huawei Honor. Then they changed to Honor with ‘(By Huawei)’ on the box and finally ditched the By Huawei in recent years.
Even Poco still use MIUI. I think many people forget that Xiaomi is an internet company, not a smartphone company. They released these handsets in ridiculously cheap because they want many people to use their phones so they can sell more of their stuff within their ecosystem. Their strategy is the same with Apple, iPhone is much easier to lure more customers into their ecosystem like Apple Music, iTunes, iMessage, etc.
So I highly doubt they’ll ditch the MIUI and make a new one for Redmi while they can shove MIUI and, worst, remove the unlocking and flashing stuff so customers have to stick with MIUI forever unless they paid more for Xiaomi brand.

If I don’t survive, tell my wife, hello
I thinks it’s more confusing this way. Now you don’t know from the beginning which brand makes these phones so consumers will be more skeptical to buy from a company called Redmi instead of Xiaomi, which has made a name for itself through the years.
Exactly the same question when Xiaomi started putting the SD625 chipset into everything new that they can come out with every fortnightly a few quarters back 😅
But I’m guessing Redmi will still use MIUI?
Wrong. They basically just separate the brand to be more recognisable by consumer and to fully compete with other sub-brands in the same segment like Honor (Huawei) and Realme (Oppo) without confusing the consumer as their line up keep growing in later years with Mi Note, Mi Max and Mi Mix series.
Also if you ever used Xiaomi since their early years, they don’t give a damn about the android version but focus more on pushing significant updates like security and useful features from newer android in new version of MIUI.
I used Mi4 and now Redmi Note 5. Afaik, I stop giving a damn about these rubbish android version update since I saw the problem with A1 about their Oreo update and now A2 with Pie update. All I care is they pushed the security update. And when they stopped doing it, I think I may already be on the next device already.
So they are not forced to update it anymore as it’s not xiaomi it wouldn’t be xiaomi’s fault if they don’t update it ..
