Xiaomi won’t boot and Reddit is my last hope.

  • 0

My phone is a Xiaomi MI A2 and have had it since late January.

After class yesterday I put my phone in the pocket of my jacket to clear my hands so I could tie my shoes. When I stood up again and pulled out my phone I seem to have turned it off with my pocket and didn’t think it was a big deal. Tried to turn it on and I got directly to picture 1 (link below). After spamming retry a good 20-25 times I got to picture 2 (link below), here I also spam retry a dozen times but nothing happens.

After reading up on simular issues I figured out how to get to fastboot, seen in picture 3 (link below), but nothing happens once I see that communist bunny. I have to sit and stare at that bunny for a couple minutes and then phone turns off again. I don’t get a menu or any choice in fastboot, as every guide I’ve now read states I should get. Plugging the phone to my computer also doesn’t do anything besides my computer finding something called Android, but I can’t extract anything from it or backup any of my files.

I have contacted multiple phone repair companies in my closest city in case it would be a quick fix for them and I could just sweep by them. But according to them, Xiaomi in general isn’t fully ‘legally’ imported in Norway and therefore we have no actual Xiaomi experts here, nor is Xiaomi officially in any service repair shop. So no one can help me there either.

If pic 1 is unclear here is the text

Your data may be corrupt. If you continue to get this message, you may need to perform a factory data reset and erase all user data stored on this device.Try againFactory data reset*

I really don’t want to factory reset my phone as I do not know if I have backup of my pictures. I also don’t fully understand how I’ve gotten into this mess only by spending a minute to tie my shoes. I can’t access my bank account or my Steam account because I need a form of second login from phone for security reasons. Reddit is my last resort before I guess I have to factory reset it before Friday. If that doesn’t solve it then I will send it back to the retailer I bought it from ([Komplett.no](https://komplett.no/)). Sorry for any typos as English is not my first language.

Really hope someone here knows what to do. This has also been posted on /AndroidQuestions.

Edit: Thanks for all the help with my phone issue and I really appreciate that so many took their time to help a girl out. I tried a lot of it but nothing really seemed to do anything. In the end I need my phone to access my bank account, my Steam account and various other things. So last night I had to just factory reset it. My pics taken with the phone camera were still there but everything from say download, screenshots and things sent to me is gone.

Yeah as many have already stated, you won’t be able to recover your data. I’d suggest the following if it already hasn’t been suggested:

    1. Download Miflash tool latest (2018.05)
    2. Go to Mifirm.net, and find the right model variant of your phone, check the packaging of your phone
    3. Download the fastboot Rom latest version for your phone
    4. Connect the phone to a computer in fastboot with your communist bunny logo
    5. Select the fastboot Rom file, and select CLEAN ALL
    6. If you never unlocked your phone select CLEAN ALL AND LOCK, otherwise select CLEAN ALL.
    7. Patiently wait and the phone will boot, although you won’t get your data back.

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-erasing-t3878453

Maybe you can flash TWRP without losing the data, after that you can connect it to your PC and extract your data

For android one it is instant unlock. No need of mi unlock tool. Done from adb directly. And there is a way to unlock it without wiping which i did on my friend’s mi a2. But don’t have that link now.

I hate to break it you but unless you do, that phone won’t boot. You’ll need to connect it to recovery and flash it back to stock.

Are you one of those people that post “I lost my phone guys, message me with your phone number if I had it before” on Facebook?

Why don’t you back up your important data? And if you have 2 step authentication, physically write down the recovery codes somewhere.

This same happened to my cousin’s Mi A1, the only that worked on it was a stock rom flash from fast boot using mi flash tool, Hate to say it, but i really hope you have backed up your app data and photos cause it will remove all the files.

Unless, you wanna do high tech stuff and unlock the bootloader (which is gonna take days to finally be able to do so) then flash custom recovery to pull out data that you need then relock the bootloader by flashing stock rom.

So you’ve never unlocked or meddled with your phone software before? This is really odd. I have this device but this hasn’t happened to me before.

Hmm your boot img might be corrupt.. but you can flash anything since it wasn’t previously unlocked. The safest you can try now is a factory reset as far as my knowledge goes.

The only way to preserve ur internal storage is to flash TWRP and flash another ROM via twrp without wiping ur internal storage or u can just try to wipe data without wiping internal storage. Wiping data (its mean deleting all installed apps) is required if u want to flash another rom.

But i guess there must be something wrong with ur storage hardware since u cant boot out of nowhere. It means system partition is somehow deleted.

hmm okay, men kjørte snapchat i bakgrunnen?

Yeah, this is why i don’t want to buy a smartphone without warranty. I bought mi 5 through unofficial channel in my country. Put screenguard and hard case on the first day of use, it will last until the day i change my phone again, i think. Then a few months later, the phone suddenly overheat and the wifi chip broke, can’t connect to 2.4ghz wifi anymore now.

With smartphone, you just don’t know what will happen, no matter how careful you are.

Because A series phone doesn’t get sold on China (except the MIUI variants).
The wait time is there to prevent people flashing global rom on chinese version phones.

Sorry you’ll have the factory reset it. That is why I sold my Mi A2 and bought a Nokia 7 Plus. Because Xiaomi proved to me that they’re completely shitty when it comes to system updates, a lot of people had the same issue after updating their devices and some didn’t even boot at all.

The Mi A2 has the issue of bootloops after updates. Not sure if thats the problem you’re facing now. If you can get to the fastboot screen, you can boot up in TWRP **without** installing TWRP and proceed to flash the stock rom **without** overwriting the data partition which would save your data like videos/pictures, app data. If you’ve changed the partitions for custom roms, it might still be possible to recover the data.

But its always much better to save a hardcopy of your 2FA security keys in case you need to reinstall/reconfigure apps on another device/pc. Can’t assume that your phone will never break or get stolen.

It pleases me that everyone in this thread trying to help the OP is consistently referring to Fastboot Mode as “communist bunny”.

I hope this lives on, and also hope the OP succeeds in solving the problem.

The same happened to my mom’s Norwegian Xiaomi A2 just recently! The only way I made it come back to life was by doing a complete wipe of the phone, and reinstalling everything. Hope you get it working again!

Edit: When you get it working again, install Google photo as soon as possible!! Free backup of photos is incredible.

Well, you have to reflash it. It won’t void your warranty but it’ll wipe your data.

Consider this a lesson. ALWAYS have backups of important stuff.

If it has unlocked bootloader you might be able to boot TWRP and use it to backup all your data and then proceed to reinstall the system.

Unlocking bootloader is one thing you can do but you might also be able to extract photo’s from your gallery. I’ve read about people making a backup of their from this way because they had a broken display, as in it was completely black.

The phone will work. The problem is that if you didn’t ever changed its software or just unlocked the bootloader, you can’t copy any data out of it if you cannot boot. Maybe your photos are saved in Google photos, you should check that. You can any time unlock the bootloader (lose all your data), flash TWRP Recovery and then easily flash any software that you would like (search on xda for good ROMs). I’m really sorry for you.

Got into a similar situation with my wife’s xiaomi.

As for why it happens, well, probably not your fault, shit happens. It’s not why or how, it’s when. Everything will fail, your PC, your phone, you, whatever, it will happen. It’s just a matter of being prepared for it.

That said, shit happens and it often catches people with their pants down so let’s try and see if we can do something about it.

First off, Google photos probably has your back. Get to a pc, open Google photos website log in with the google account you were using on your phone and see what’s there. If you see all your photos or recent ones, you’re golden. If it’s empty, fuck, but let’s keep at it.

Second, if you plug in your phone to your PC with a cable, can you see your folders? You probably can’t, but doesn’t hurt to try. If you do, just copy over whatever files/photos you have to the pc and we’re good.

You didn’t see your phone on the pc. Did you unlock your phones bootloader? If you did, good. That menu thing you’re seeing is the recovery menu for the phone. It’s a special place used to install the system and other cool things. Thing is, the default recovery sucks ass and doesn’t allow to do much. If you unlocked the bootloader, you’re free to replace that recovery with a much better one like TWRP. TWRP is a third party one that allows tons of cool things like seeing you phone on your PC and accessing your files on your phone just by booting TWRP (this is called mounting the data partition through MTP).

This is where you’d get it for de A2
    https://twrp.me/xiaomi/xiaomimia2.html

You need to flash this through fastboot, this process is a bit more involved but you can get all the info you need from xda:

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/guide-how-to-flash-custom-roms-stuff-t3876375

If you get TWRP working, assuming your phone’s partitions are intact and there isn’t any issue with the storage hardware, you can boot to recovery (TWRP), plug the cable and copy over your stuff to the pc.

If you do have hardware issues, there’s little chances you can fix it by yourself. try seeking professional help, there are companies that specialize in data recovery. They’re expensive but if your photos are worth it, they usually get results.

    Best of luck!

There is a post on xda, how to do the bootloader unlock without wiping. Unlock it without wiping and just flash twrp and try to get the data. I don’t know whether twrp will be able to decrypt it. Most probably if secure boot is not on then the correct recovery may be able to decrypt. I had done bootloader unlock without wiping on my friend’s mi a2 long back. Unfortunately i don’t have the link to the xda post. Search on google.

I had the same Issue on my MiA2. Unfortunately i had to do a Factory reset but It wasn’t that bad since everything was like before thanks to the Xiaomi backup system. What I didn’t have that could have saved my phone was the bootloader unlocked. If you have It unlocked you might be able to pull It off by ADB.

Had a similar event yesterday. Mi9t Miui11. Was running warm all morning, battery going down quickly. Battery usage in settings showed ANDROID SYSTEM at 65%, all other apps normal.
When my battery hit 15% I turned the phone off. Later, I was unable to turn the phone on. I tried holding “Down” volume for 10 seconds and went into “Fastboot” with the…um…Commie bunny cartoon but no text. I had no idea what to do so I just pocketed my phone. An hour later, I noticed the phone was cool to the touch but had booted-up on it’s own. It has operated semi-normally since then. Android System is still over 35% but battery drain is not as bad as before and it is not especially warm.
I suggest the OP just leave his phone alone for a while, then check it. If it won’t boot-up, hold the “Down” volume rocker for 10-15 seconds, see if “Fastboot” comes on. If it does, just leave it alone and see if it fixes itself as mine did.

Dont know if anyone has said it in previous comments. BUT YOU MIGHT be able to get access to data stored on your phone if you flash twrp via fastboot.

After that reboot into recovery and you will have a mounting option available while connected to pc, this will allow you to access stored data.

If that wont work than im sorry man, your data is gone.
