I have no doubt that Xiaomi could become the market leader in smartphones. I myself am a big fan of this company and also have shares.
However, what bothers me a bit and I do not understand is the marketing.
Instead of having 2 brands (for example: Xiaomi for phones and high-priced electronics, and Mi for household and small stuff), so many sub-brands are created where nobody really has an overview anymore. There are also too many apps that are confusing. In my opinion, Xiaomi needs a clear line and structure here. An ecosystem. I mean, how many product lines of phones do they have? Mi, Redmi, Xiaomi, … ?
The quality of the products is very good. Dreame vacuum cleaners, kettles, wifi repeaters, etc. feel high-quality and have a good price.
However, the brand loyalty from the customer to Xiaomi is not used properly in my opinion – Why? The company has billions and there will also be clever minds in China that can set up something like this effectively?
Not to forget that they are relaunching the Mi 10 series this year with a somewhat new chipset
Kinda, but you probably don’t even realize how many MIUI versions there are which complicate it way more than just phone release. I think MIUI versions are the bigger problem.
Global, Europe, Russia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, China. That’s the ones I know for sure, but could be more.
That’s true. The average person really doesn’t care about technology at all too or specs or any of that stuff.
Redmi Note 9 4G, Redmi 9T and Redmi 9 Power are pretty much the same phones, with different markets having different RAM configurations. Also not a fan of NFC being market dependent.
What they did right:
Good value for money products.
What they did wrong:
Confusing product lineup and brands.
There was a time before this mess of a phone lineups when we used to get monthly security patches and fixes. Now good luck fixing a bug if you’re using one of their budget phones that’s more than 8 months old.
Are we not going to talk about how many smartphones they released (Redmi and Mi)? A LOT. Also their operating system has so many bugs and glitches, hope that most of them will get fixed with MIUI 12.5
All sub brands start with a clear cut motive but eventually when market doesn’t respond or greed kicks in, companies start blurring the lines they themselves created
100% agree
AND they have completely different brand and model names for nearly identical phones 😄
The variety of different phones is excessive and ridiculous. But tbh i’m not too bothered, i’m one of those buyers who nerd out on every single component of a phone before I purchase. So more choice is fine by me.
nope the entire ecosystem is about the Mi AIOT chain where they invest startups as major shareholders for them to work as different ‘r&d departments’ to prevent overwhelming xiaomi corp.
xiaomi is in charge of the miui&aiot ecosystem though
even the cable inside the phone box is from ZMI(mi’s cable brand)
True but it’s still available in some retail chains. Not sure if old stock or what it is.
Why are you asking here? Ask Xiaomi.
Or the CC9 Premium Edition? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
If viewed like that it really is very confusing and as a consumer you wont even know what the hell the difference between each phone is and might just go with another brand for the sake of simplicity.
What I have noticed and also based from experience, Xiaomi doesnt really release all those variants in the same market so it is quite easy to tell them apart. You might have like 10 total variants of the Redmi 9 in total but say in Country A they only sell the 9, 9A, and 9 Pro while in Country B they only sell the 9T, 9Power, and 9 Prime.
Watch this by techaltar.
I think Xiaomi is still understandable, but they sometimes make a downgrade in the next series than an upgrade example redmi note 10 5g vs redmi note 10 look a that, how come note 10 have an amoled display and a stereo speakers?? But
What about Oppo which is ofc very confusing how the hell Oppo A18 better than Oppo a37 or A53 better than a54 so stupid right?
I am very happy with my Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro / Redmi K30 S Ultra. not to forget the fact that in Europe the 10T pro is 499 Euro inlcusive 19% tax, The K30S Ultra is 324 Euro with 13% Tax.
My Mi 10T pro was 328 Euro inclusive of 7% VAT, see how it all doesn’t make sense at all ?
Germany : 419 ex tax, China 302 (redmi) and locally in Thailand 306 for the Mi !
Please Xiaomi (and all other brands) one pre tax price for everyone on the world and give your phones 1 name…
By the way BBK is even worse with Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Ixoo and Oneplus. Many people in Europe don’t even realize Oneplus is Chinese phone , usually an Oppo clone with slightly different software for lotsamoney.
From what i remember, Xiaomi’s marketing was always more word of mouth rather than splashing themselves allover the place like Apple and Samsung. Wasnt it only recently they started to have their own stores open up in different countries ??. Certainly at least in Philippines was where i first saw their stores. One visit nothing. 12 months later at least a dozen branches open. Still no official stores in Australia yet? (all those unofficial distributors/sellers pain in ass). Anyway, as someone else pointed out..Apple and Samsung sure have many more phones floating out there ..maybe Xiaomi just flog there phones as budget, middle and high end ? .It does seem to make sense considering what models they have available atm. My simple take on it. Btw they have arguably have the best models on the budget/lower end.
If they made just one global phone it would’ve been easier to update them all since there are less
I’ve been using stock Redmi phones for years. The MIUI 12 update made me switch to a Galaxy phone instead. I’m tired of these inconsistent updates that may or may not brick my phone.
When they don’t even know how to name their individual phones consistently withing one single product line, how do you think they could ever manage to organize their whole company?
You want a Redmi 9 phone?
Well, do you want the [9, 9A, 9T, 9C, 9 Power, 9 Prime, 9AT, 9i, 9C NCF or the 9 \(indian version\)](https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sQuickSearch=yes&sName=Redmi%209)?
How about the [Mi 9, 9 Lite, 9T, 9T Pro, 9 Pro 5G, 9 Pro, 9 Explorer, 9X, CC9 or CC9 Pro?](https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sQuickSearch=yes&sName=xiaomi%20Mi%209)
You see it’s simple, the Mi phones are the flagship line, and the Redmi phones are the cheaper ones, and…
>Mi9T Pro … the exact same phone as Redmi K20 Pro
…ffs Xiaomi…
Mi 10 5g
MI 10 pro
MI 10 T
MI 10 ultra
MI 10 light
Did I mess something? 🤔
(millet, ‘small rice’for direct translation
xiaomi = mi
(red rice)
redmi=cheap product
doesn’t work that well in engish lol
Mi9T Pro is mid-range of Xiaomi Mi phones , and …
K20 Pro is flagship of Redmi phones ….. it’s simple.
For me its simple, Mi flagship and RedMi budget phones. Mijia or smart life is home stuff etc. I love Xiaomi, never planned to buy it because of the weird name but I’m glad I did 🥰 . Maybe even buy Xiaomi QIN phone just for fun 🤣
Tbf, Xiaomi has always been known for its poor branding of products. They themselves appear to be confused about their naming. Also alot of their products’ names change in different countries.
Also if you’re in the Mi/Xiaomi whatever ecosystem, you would notice that not all companion apps for their devices are made by the same company. Their actually made by a variety of different software companies.
Yup it’s a very broken ecosystem with some very good value products.
I could rant on this topic for hours lmao.
> xiaomi
I have Xiaomi Mi9T Pro, not to be confused with Mi9 Pro,completely different line, but the exact same phone as Redmi K20 Pro
They’re not just aiming for western countries, hence the spammy product line, they’re trying to fill every single gap between each devices so they can cover all customers.
What bothers me the most is that they re-use same product name for totally different phones.
To be honest, the Mix lineup is basically dead at this point, the last Mix was launched in the first half of 2019.
That’s like 30 phones ago to xiaomi
The Western mainstream market is pretty much dominated by Samsung and Apple.
What phone do they have without a sub category (Mi, redmi, A etc)? Poco is it’s own company now it seems.
Agree with you
but in my opinion only without reading anything
it looks at me, that they lost control of that
on begin lets make brand A and B and C
it just got out of theirs hands that consumers would want this products because they are working nice… so now we ended with more products, new ecossistemas that probably cannot being joined into a 2 or 3 systems only
I’ve no idea how many apps they hand… i only have phone and powerbanks and cameras, but i guess… probably apps for lights? robos? bikes?
it’s just getting to a point of totall mess and confusing
Mi9T Pro and Redmi K20 are targeted at different countries.
The problem is people here are obsessed with every release , even when not intended for them.
Redmi K20 was not sold in Europe. Mi9T was. If you’re European, Xiaomi only targeted one phone at you.
Is Xiaomi to blame for you caring about phones made only for India? Etc.
xiaomi doesnt need brand loyalty. in many of their products lines, there simply isnt a better deal.
Yes, I agree. If only did Google not ban Huawei, tech world would be way better right now.
[Tech Altar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQMFmnvSb3k) gives a good (or as good as you’re going to get) explanation of it.
Man. You’re bang on the money. Also “the name convention is so confusing” > mi 9t pro… Well. The brand is Mi. Duh. It’s the 9th generation of the Mi phone so it’s a part of the 9th series family. The model is the T model. And it’s the pro variant with the camera. It’s not that hard.
I personally have the mi 9 SE … Making it a mi brand phone, from the 9th gen. And it’s the Small Edition. The SE.
“HAHA BUT THEY HAVE A LITE AND ALSO THE CC9 which one do I choose?” Hmm I dunno maybe choose to spend less time reading endlessly about phones made for Chinese / Indian / global markets?
In smartphone market , they basically.do rebranding that’s why they have so many names , sub – brands . I can’t remember the exact names but it has been done a lot of times . If a particular smartphone doesn’t sell well or gets a bad reputation they rename it make some small changes like appearance and then sell it under a different sub brand . It may not necessarily be a bad product like K30 pro . They may do it so that more people buy the same product thinking it is different.
I mean, other brands do it too. Samsungs can be Galaxy, Note and other variants too.
Sometimes it feels a bit like spamming the market, even hough the quality is great.
But for a market entry in the west (like they’re planning actually) I can’t imagine that this strategy will work. It’s too messy.
The have main line Mi and Mix. Budget line Redmi and half dead A1 line A*. That’s less than Samsung or huawei does I think. It’s only confusing when you mix in Chinese lines which tech media sadly love to do.
Then they have like TONS of watch brands
well explained
I mean I do like their hardware but if we’re talking chinese brands then I’m sorry to disappoint but Huawei has a shit ton better software and customer service at least in the UK and Turkey. there is some bloatware but It’s the first time I used those stupid apps on a phone, even they are interesting. Their chipsets were in the verge of slapping snapdragon ass because they are super power efficent (kirin 9000 was 3times more efficent than the 865 if ikr) and they’ve got a huge plan for their own OS working on a fucking fridge
Also Huawei knows more about marketing with all the seamless connection between devices and better than apple ecosystem they’ve got lying around.
I think they have more subbrands than that even. Isn’t the home stuff known as Mijia?
Flooding the market with various models is what allowed them to grow this big. This is way samsung and huawei did too, just look at one plus, sure, their phones are popular but their total sales number are crazy low compared to these other brands
I see what you’re saying but as they are a multi billion dollar company they must be doing something right and don’t need to change much.
