Default launcher on miui is not great, lot of us use third party launchers like Nova to have better experience. With the latest update miui has disabled gesture support for third party apps. In large screen phones it’s very difficult and counter intuitive to use buttons for navigation. It feels terrible to be stuck with default launcher is we need to use gestures, Its pathetic that there was no warning by Xiaomi before the update. We have to give them feedback that we want the feature back.

If it were up to me, they can ditch MIUI altogether and just put Vanilla Android on their smartphones.
MIUI isn’t terrible, but it’s too heavily modified, just like Samsung’s One UI.

Oneplus allows third party launchers
It is an easy fix for Xiaomi, I’d rather have them do it instead of using third party apps for security concerns. When third party launcher is installed and gestures is selected, there is an option to learn gestures in settings it’s like demo of all the gestures possible, when you try the demo all the features work flawlessly even with an third party launcher so it could be extended to work permanently on third party launchers
As you say MIUI is already heavily modified , it wouldn’t hurt them to do a bit more modification to enable a feature which improves experience for their user many folds. Or they could make their launcher atleast as good as a Nova launcher.
I’m doing it but few issues such as the slight lag, the fact that the app isn’t updated for over two years (Potential vulnerabilities never fixed) , and the security permissions required for it to function such as permission to draw over other Apps and accessibility permissions are a cause of concern for me.
Yeah they have done few good modification, some not so great modification but they have left out many modifications which actually are required.

Then you’d might likely lose GMS. You cool with that? From what is can read, this isn’t working in any a11 version of Android without root access. Not even OnePlus so there has to be a reason for that.

It’s a software and software is not bound by laws of physics or something. Source code is available therefore it is a matter of writing code. A matter of minor significance for behemoth like Xiaomi
I personally do like miui but it’s too heavy. I have a Poco x3 pro and xiaomi eu is fine. But it’s very heavily customized

i had the same problem when i updated to 12.0.2 and posted about it here last week and got some really helpful suggestions
in my case, i cannot install nova launcher at all…i mean i can’t even install it from a downloaded apk file…so i downloaded another launcher and for the gesture support i installed edge gestures…its about 2 dollars in play store and it works pretty well
You can still use launchers in AOSP 11. They do stutter but you still have an option
Android good, xiaomi bad. Pixel and samsung phones has gesture support on third party launchers.
They should give us an option to use vanilla android. Miui sucks. Running custom rom’s for 1 month and they are way better than miui.
Miui is the worst ui in Android market rn. Xiaomi is the 2nd biggest company, they should really change their software.

I have learned in another thread that this is only partially true.
It is true, some old API loophole got closed in Android 11 forcing GUI developers to implement a new one for gestures.
For AOSP launcher, this is included. Other companies, such as Samsung have since long revised their launchers to provide the new functionality while enabling 3rd party launchers to also provide gesture navigation.
I tried so many brands and solutions over the years, I don’t really like any of stock UI (Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi…) The perfect setup was Nova Launcher with Gestures. Can’t even begin to understand how can they ruin this…
You should try custom roms
I know, definitely the best interfaces I got are from the time I used custom ROMS with my galaxy S4 and S6. But at this point I can’t find the time to do that, I just want something that works and feels comfortable to use. If I can’t find a solution to this I’m heading over to Apple.
Aren’t there issues also with the Recents screen (not resolved with FNG)?

Yeah I’m not sure what’s going on. My wife had a xiaomi x3 nfc with no complaints. I used MIUI since it was just a ROM and had every major Mi phone up until 10. Skipped that as it was slow to release in my region so just gotten a new when it came out. But non of the “rampant” issues, ever.
Gotten a few “kill yourself” messages today though so looking good for the brand sub.
OneUi I actually love quite a lot. MIUI is giving me massive headaches though. I did not expect it to be so bad.

They are far from flawless. I got my first Xiaomi phone last year as I thought the UI can’t be that bad. Unfortunately I was wrong.

I have a Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra and a Samsung S10. Both on Android 11. I’m writing this post on the Samsung running nova launcher with full screen gestures. There are absolutely no problems so far.
I see no reason to take criticism of a phone UI personally. Do you do that regularly? I would recommend against it as it’s not healthy.
