It feels Xiaomi is purposely killing it’s Android One lineup so as to force users to choose the MIUI ones. Maybe because MIUI gives them the ad revenue which stock Android won’t.

This is exactly how I feel, the MIA1 was really well recieved especially in the west as people much prefer a nice clean Android over a bloated chinesey effort.

When they realised that their Android One could possibly overshadow their MIUI handsets they began gimping the MI A series into oblivion and bury it for good!

So sad as they could have been a real competitor in the Android One space given their exellent hardware.

If only they could do something with Android 10, but not even that, they are having a lot of problems with Snapdragon 665, they can’t get Android 10 there. Other brands are working in Android 11 and Xiaomi aren’t able to put the 10 in a best seller phone like Redmi note 8

Both of which are done by geeky people which is quite a small minority of the audience which Xiaomi caters to.

My father used to use Mi Browser until the day I told him to switch to Chrome. Also he had all the ads enabled by default which I had to disable myself. Otherwise he would have never understood how to do it himself

You’re correct that there are guides out there to do all this. But considering Xiaomi sells millions of devices, how many of the users do you think actually would personally go out and do that?

Considering majority of the people need a cheap smartphone just to use WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, or click photos or play some simple games, they don’t even bother about the ads and just ignore those.

Also disabling ads on MIUI is not that straightforward for a simple person. You need to disable it at multiple places (remember the “Receive recommendations” checkbox in all the Xiaomi apps?).

Android One was PR for them. They will not fix or expand that series which would only undermine MIUI. Now, they have introduced the brand to masses, they don’t need it a anymore.

I used to think that too but in reality custom rom users is very very low. Even among friends and families everyone uses smartphone now but how many unlocks the bootloader and flashes custom roms? Very few. I think only about 5% of users go that route. Or maybe 10% at most.

I’ve enough brain to do this kind of stuff. But what I don’t have is time and readiness to take the risk – to do such kind of work. I intend use my phone without extensive tinkering (root, ROMs,…..etc).

To be fair my decision isn’t only because of the mess of Android One. For my next phone I also want to be able to have official support in my country, I know that Huawei has an amazing support and fixes phones in one day for example.

Many want stock experience out of the box and that’s why android one, pixels and oxygenos has so many fans. But I don’t think many people go for custom roms among them. Hence my comment. Sorry to bother you nevertheless.

If I was you, I’d avoid Huawei

The Huawei AppGallery doesn’t have way too many apps for it to be a viable alternative to Google Play (just going from my head, note that I’m European) – these apps are missing – Public transport app, banking app, school’s app, Google Pay, and every single app relying on Google Play services. That compared to how often you need support is a much bigger downside

Think about Samsung devices or the new OnePlus Nord if it’s available in your region

If I’d buy a Huawei I’d go with an older model that would still have Google Services, for example the P30 lite would be an upgrade on this phone and still has Google Services. But this is still and hypothetical case, I won’t get a new phone as long as this one works fine. Never really looked at Samsung, their advertisement is always so focused on the top tier phones that I end up not knowing anything about the range I’d willing to buy, but I’m sure they must have something similar to P30 lite.

You don’t need to be a geek of course.

But admit it, most of people don’t care if there’s ads in their phone anyway. Only a minority like us that cared about that.

Actually I moved from Xiaomi A2 lite to S10… However I was so disappointed by the battery, I returned the Samsung and ( really unwillingly) bought Xiaomi note 10 pro. Immediately installed Nova launcher and now it looks and behaves more or less acceptable.

    >And you see people every day who are not very tech savy but still wanna install custom ROM because they see it mentioned a lot

you do see it. but its not a lot of people. the number is not huge enough that xiaomi needs to close the bootloader to prevent their ad revenue going down significantly

Thing is, everyone gets the bugs, but the average user who doesn’t use the features that get the bugs doesn’t experience bugs, only the power users do.

For example, upon receiving the android 10 update on my Mi A2, charging speed slowed down to a crawl, being a power user, I have multiple chargers and cables, which I use at home, at work, in the car, on my motorcycle, and a powerbank when out and about. An average user who charges their phone once a day at night won’t notice the drop in charge speed or blame it on the charger on the other hand, I noticed immediately and know better than to blame all 7 chargers.

Another example is the Google Voice assistant, the average user does not bother with it, and simply leaves the always on stand by feature off, on the other hand, I as a power user often use this feature, so after it started interfering with calls after the Android 10 update, I noticed immediately, while the average user won’t

Nope. I just want a stock android and I don’t need root – same goes for the phones I’m picking for my employees. Had to switch to Nokias because Xiaomi literally doesn’t want the A-Series to survive.

Same thing happens with the Mi Box. Users are waiting years for updates but Xiaomi doesn’t really care for fixing bugs as they don’t have any ad revenue there.

Going back to phones, I’m using the Redmi note 7 with PE rom and seems like it will be my last Xiaomi phone.

Honestly I am exactly the tech savvy type user you are talking about. Back in the day I was all about making custom ROMs with PPC kitchen and the Android SDK. I loved the control it gave me over customizing. Now that manufacturers have embraced the stock Android experience I find fewer reasons to tinker. Hotspot hacks used to be the rage, but now that I am older with more disposable income AND carriers offer hotspot as part of their plans, I have no need to edit the build.prop file.

I am typing this from a Mi Note 10 Lite, I have rejected the permissions from the stock apps and uninstalled the games. I have not seen a single ad. I assume those stock apps are where I would see. Anywhere else?

Point being I don’t really have reasons to even root and etc this phone. My previous phones were pixel, pixel XL, nexus 6, oppo find 7 a few early droid phone a few windows PPC phones…I’ve been through them all, lol.

They don’t need to kill Android One. The experience on clean Android is so bad it kills itself. I would happily get MIUI onto my Mi A2 Lite. never buying that crap again

I don’t understand what people are complaining here. Before we get to updates from Xiaomi, Google should provide settings again they cut out in previous versions. Why can’t I prevent an app from making internet connections any more? the hell

Software is fine. The UI is very close to stock, in some ways better. It handles multitasking better by using the entire screen to present the last 4 apps I’ve used, rather than the side scrolling one by one of the stock droid ui.

Finger print sensor is behind the screen so I can see a slight irregularity when the screen is on but black. Easily ignorable.

Has a neat built in feature that if you press power button 5 times it will send an emergency flare to your emergency contacts with your location and last people you’ve called.

Task bar is in the notch area and a really good implementation imo. You can set it to treat the area around the notch as a bezel or have it use the screen to put the status bar.

It even manages to avoid the auto bright issue other Xiaomi phone users seem to report.

Besides denying permissions for useful but still bloatware the one that caught me off guard is a built in virus scanner that is sort of a middle man between the Google app store fidelity that you are used to. In this instance it presents an ad screen post app install. You can turn it off tho so that’s nice.

Lastly the one UI issue for me is that with my Pixel Buds 2, when I open the case the notification bar cuts the ear buds status message in half. Basically the notification has a pic of the buds and shows the battery status of the case and was ear piece. It’s a minor inconvenience and certainly something a custom ROMs could fix. But the TLDR is that I have zero desire to change anything because it’s offers everything I need. Even 4g on T- mobile.

That’s not the point, everyone messes up as a one off, Samsung messed up bug time by using defective batteries in the s8, Apple messed up big time with the bending phones, and phones that lose reception when held against the ear; but every mess up by these companies is a one off that gets fixed in the next generation. The Xiaomi mess ups have been software ones that can easily be fixed in updates, instead, they’re not being fixed, and new bugs are coming out with new generations

MIUI nowadays is quite good. As long as they don’t begin to lock the bootloaders and prevent us from using ADB to remove their bloatware everything is fine.

In fact their whole Mi 10 lineup is great for different purposes – Note and Mi 10 alike – the Mi 10 lite has the same awesome display then the Mi 10 has – boosting up to was it like 1400 NITS? (yes it’s that high, and crazy, I think the highest I’ve ever seen).

But forget about the on-screen fingerprint sensors. They’re responsive at first, until you actually start using your phone. Unreliable as fuck. Just use faceunlock (I’m using the regular Mi Note 10).

Don’t be that fool – I own a Pixel 3a and trust me I’ve tried 3 times of a course of 6 months to upgrade and rolled back twice because it was so laggy and unstable (mind you NOT beta but STABLE – haha).

Only now it works good after disabling Digital Wellbeing. That is 6 months in being stable and several “security” patches.

Have I mentioned that Google has (purposefully?) downgraded GCam quality for it?

Why? Because they’re to cheap to put good camera sensors in the Pixel 4.

The man behind GCam – Marc Levoy already left the sinking ship:

    Source: I own a Pixel 3a.

I can only imagine the pain the manufacturers are going trough with Android 10.

Just lookup on Reddit for “Android 10 upgrade lag”. That issue spawns across all manufacturers and high-end phones alike.

You DO relialize that Google was reponsible for that? Right? They did the same shit for their Pixel lineup – a quick Google will show you lots of angry customers and bricked / horribly performing phones on STABLE releases (derp).

The Android One – Google – experience.

Even MIUI firmwares are reliant on Google pulling their shit off right they just can’t fix every fire themselves DESPITE their great affords (one example: Camera quality Android 9 to Android 10 in Mi Note 10 greatly improved because of better/proper focus fix).

Android One is all about GOOGLE providing the updates, not the manufacturer itself (which does only add VERY little to the system).

Guess why they’re so slow to roll out Android 10 for all devices despite Pixel having it for ages now (with all the shit Google has done).

Source: I own a Pixel 3a and withnessed the shit myself.
