    why bother?

just spend the money on english translations and software upgrades which will attract more people.

GoPro name will eventually be bought for cents on the dollar and stuck on household items, just like atari and polaroid.

They’re manufacturered by foxconn afaik, so taiwan/china.

I dunno, i would assume it would generally be easier to start from scratch, and just scalp the employees you want from other companies.

    > The smart ones will learn to speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese to stay competitive in the new world.

It’s more likely the other way around, meaning Chinese will start adopting English, as it is the de facto international language for business and it’s also at the base of the whole Computer Science sector.

The US won culturally a long time ago, and I doubt China will be able to beat them. Right now, if you need to do business with China, you speak English (or you try to, as they are terrible with the language) and will continue with this trend.

BTW, US+Europe is still stronger than China economically, and if you add India and half of the African continent as English speaking developing countries, then a switch to mandarin seems even more unlikely.

    >Chinese, culturally, will never, ever change.

That’s pretty naive of you to say. They have already changed deeply a couple times as a society, especially when you look in the big cities like Shenzen.

Going from the old celestial empire to the Mao’s communist regime (and all the various changes in between) and then now from the more USSR-like communism to a more capitalistic dictatorship under Xi Jinping. Those are profound changes that shaped the culture of today’s China (an example would be religion in China, and how under the CPC the population became pretty much completely irreligious)

Not manufacturing (xiaomi can manufacture a lot more than GoPro) but patents. GoPro actually has quite a lot of patents (almost 10 million patents if I’m not wrong) and if Xiaomi wants to do a serious push in the west with action cams, those patents might come in handy.

They also have the Mija line. Anyway, I would say that brand and, even more importantly, patents are the two key reasons why they would do it.

Their IP and tech possibly. GoPro’s algo and firmware is potentially still better than Xiaomi’s alternatives in this sector. Maybe they can use this on their phones since its the software where Xiaomi camera’s drop the ball.

I disagree to a certain point. Chinese syllables and characters are so different to English that it is basically quite impossible to adopt English.

I mean there are some words which sound a bit English (幽默 = youmo = humor or 逻辑 = luoji = logic), but in the end the difference is too big between the languages that English could really be adopted into Chinese syllables.
So either it will be some like “我今天出去了party” (again, I think quite unlikely), or it won’t happen.
Currently when I see conversations between westerners and Chinese, there is some “English integration” like 3Q (三Q = san Q = thank you), but this leads more to confusion on the western side than anything.

I don’t really see any integration happening based on the limited syllables they have.
