How fast it charges your smartphone?
I was thinking about the same thing. Some manufacturers are probably lowering max voltage, to increase durability. I had Sony XZ Premium, and today, after years of usage AccuBattery app measures about 95% of its initial battery capacity.
Now, my much newer Xiaomi Mi9 shows about 65% of capacity.
I always take care of my phones and keep charge between 20-80 %.
I bought both phones second-hand, but Sony has much higher quality than Xiaomi.

Even if you explain the whole science and logic behind it there will always be those who deny your logic just because and there is no reason why they do it no science or logic behind why they refute a scientific or logical point.
It’s cool that a phone can be fully charged in 8 minutes I don’t see anyone using it on a daily basis, but it would be great travel charger when you are out of the country and need to quickly move and only have 10-20 min to charge your phone.
I can see a future where phone might have a cooling system for the battery as fast charging takes hold of every phone as a feature.
if 18w fast charge gets a phone toasty then i would dread to think what 200w will do

I don’t know why people already knows how bad will be for.the battery that amount of watts. When we were at 5W and appeared 12, 15, 20W etc. people said the same and now its a standard.
Batteries dislike heat a lot, due to the electrical resistance in the battery, more current will lead to more heat being generated. This directly affects the lifespan of your battery
exactly. i think the best way to do it would be to have a slider pop up when you plug in the phone that allows you to select slow (10 or 15w) medium (33w) and fast (max charging speed so 67W for mi 11, 120W for mi 10 ultra, 200w for this thing and so on).
This way you can quickly put your phone on fast mode if you’re low on battery and need to leave home, or select slow mode for night charging without having to mess in the battery settings every time

It is possible to control charging from system, but you need root. On my Xperia, there was a feature in the OS, that will control charging current, if you leave phone charging overnight. It will finish charging at 100% just before first alarm.
But really stupid thing there was lack of control. You can’t set target percentage, or target time. It is fully automated, only works at night. But sometimes doesn’t work as it should.
Android supports low charging during night and other handy features. How about adjustable charging settings?

Yeah but still an awful way to waste materials and resources. The most responsible option is to take a xiaomi (any phone) and just slow/normal charge it.
I find fast charge also consumes the charge faster, fast charging also creates heat/stress for the battery thereby reducing its lifespan.
I love my 18W charger, it saved me in emergencies many times. A 200W charger might be overkill, but I would love to use it if I needed it in an emergency too.
Well, its kinda optional. You just have to use a normal 10w charger.
If a battery gets hot, it does not hold as much power.
Charging 2 pieces ~100w each, they both get really hot (~60 degrees celcius).
It does degrade ’em. Even if Xiaomi is trying to say it does not.

I wonder how much of the new phones are made from recycled materials aside from the battery. Seems cheaper for manufacturers to mine and produce new than recycle.

Currently is cheaper. Specially because you need to sort the material. But it don’t mean it will be always the case. Specially because it’s a finite resource.
I would bet in a regular phone ppl just recycle the gold dusts from the connection and maybe any copper (if there is any copper inside of it). Rest will be recycled in a few hundred years in the future most likely. I believe plastic can’t be recycled and battery I have no clue. Probably the chemical part is waste but some parts theoretically could be recycled.
I bet batteries will be major in the future of recycling. Society will move to a more battery focused then producing energy on demand

That’s pretty cool in an emergency but definitely not something you’d want to do every day. Not if you plan on keeping your phone for more then an year at least
Yes, great app. I have it on few phones, and it calculates capacity very accurately.
There’s no problem with this if they don’t include the fast charger in the box. maybe ship it with the regular fast charger by default and have the 200w an optional extra. People can use it for emergencies only if they’re worried about batter life.
Either way, we’ll eventually reach a point where it doesn’t harm the battery as much anymore and this is a step in the right direction

That’s only one part of the equation. Temperature is another big part which influences your battery life-span.
Check your battery temp during fast charging and let me know how hot it is.

I always charge my smartphones up to 80%, I don’t know if I’m tripping but I feel that my smartphone doesn’t “tires” the battery like if I charge it to 100%.
However I can’t get my Redmi Note 8 to let me know if it has been charged up to 80% without using an external app like an alarm for example, I actually didn’t find any that worked right in this case without having to root my smartphone (that I didn’t do it anyways), which is kinda lame.
Maybe I didn’t searched a lot too.

I found a lot of apps and some native settings that I can use when rooting my phone, but to be honest I don’t want to root rn. But I’m glad that Xiaomi has that policy that you don’t lose your warranty by rooting it.
About the lack of control, the funny part is that the smartphone industry generally never let us have good control over the battery haha but I’m used to it.

Yeah fast charge reduce the lifespan of the battery but don’t necessarily consumes charge faster.
Would be nice if it could be optional ofc. You want maximum performance from your phone while sacrificing the battery and enable fast charge and remove some software optimization. If you want to have a large lifespan enable fast charge only till 40% of the battery (or some other low value). Keep most optimizations features on by default.
Different peoples are looking for different solutions for their phone.
About the material waste I don’t think anything else beside the battery is harmful to the environment.

800 for the base model with 64gb of storage lol. It is ridiculous that my gfs 130 euro xiaomi has 128 gb of storage and the 800 euro iPhone has half of that. Apple fan boys will really cling on anything.

While I agree I have money to buy each year a new xiaomi phone. If they leave out some optimization to give me raw performance for a year or year and a half max while creating a new phone I wouldn’t mind.

A guy from my work has a wireless charger for his S20+ and I thought it would be a little slower than the normal charger, but I saw it charging and it’s really that fast.

Phones are already smart enough to not overcharge the battery. What is displayed on your screen as a 100% isn’t actually the battery pushed right to its limit, but a safe value that’s good for your phone.
It sure will degrade over time, but this is what batteries do. Normally it would take a couple of years for battery to degrade by 20%, but instead you already gave up 20% of capacity just by not using it!
Just charge and enjoy your phone!

Wellp. The battery degradation will make it last less time but since it degrades slowly it will not be that noticeable. Specially if use the 20%till 80% method
I agree its waste of resources but basically the internal components are just waste of energy since the basic materials are sand and metals. Aluminum case is recyclable.
The biggest waste is battery do far because humans don’t know what to do with it. I agree I could live without this feature but it suits my needs perfectly. Power user who barely use his phone while working.

by material wastage I meant taking care of things we own and buying another phone once the battery degrades. buying a phone in 3 to 4 years time vs buying a phone in 1.5 to 2.5 years time multiplied by x billion population is a huge waste; good for the economy though.

I really do not see how they can do this while making sure the battery lifespan isn’t horrible.
I like they’re proof of concept friendly. They also did that phone with the screen that bent to cover both sides. There’s hardly anything new lately on the world of mobile devices. What’s worse, usually big names don’t tend to innovate all that much and usually stay with tried and true formulas to make sure they sell. It makes this even cooler.
