Very creepy Xiaomi Mi 9 Error

I have recently changed my phone’s wallpaper to this photo: [https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://i.redd.it/je65fih3f5021.png&imgrefurl=https://i.reddit.com/r/Amoledbackgrounds/comments/9zs9z9/6t\_rainbow\_outline\_1080x2340/&h=2340&w=1080&tbnid=HPadWQ\_JaGPnBM&tbnh=331&tbnw=152&usg=K\_LT6h16R1DZ6hfcBplbrUZ2bb0CY=&hl=en\_GB&docid=lW3GDAaAe0MvoM](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://i.redd.it/je65fih3f5021.png&imgrefurl=https://i.reddit.com/r/Amoledbackgrounds/comments/9zs9z9/6t_rainbow_outline_1080x2340/&h=2340&w=1080&tbnid=HPadWQ_JaGPnBM&tbnh=331&tbnw=152&usg=K_LT6h16R1DZ6hfcBplbrUZ2bb0CY=&hl=en_GB&docid=lW3GDAaAe0MvoM)

As soon as I did this, the screen of my phone keeps turning ON and OFF. It keeps being on for 1 second and then turns off and turns on for 1 second and turns off, so I cannot do anything during that period. While doing this, it vibrates twice. After 5-6 times of doing this, a loading screen appears and it gives me 3 options:

1. Reboot: the same thing happens
2. Wipe Data
3. Connect with MIAssistant

Can anybody help me with this error? I don’t want to wipe my phone’s data.\*added: Because I really needed my phone, I ended up wiping my data. Fortunately I didn’t have anything serious\*

Ok so this probably won’t work, but try removing you SIM card. I was having the exact same symptoms, screen turning on and off almost every second to the point i couldn’t even unlock my phone. Once I removed my SIM card it stopped glitching out, and I could use my phone like normal. I don’t think my issue was related to my wallpaper, so this probably won’t work for you, but I figured I would post it anyway. In the end I couldn’t figure out what was causing my SIM card to glitch out my phone like that, and had to reset my phone but since then I haven’t had an issue.

Adding something to this. The png appear to be slightly malformed as mix explorer can’t extract a thumbnail from it.

Another thing I noticed is that is the file is downloaded using reddit is fun, the same mix explorer detects it as 0x0 pixels until the file is renamed (and therefore overwritten). If it’s download via Chrome the file is detected as the correct pixel size.

Could the problem be with reddit is fun app? How did you download the file @op?

I put a new link that opens it up in google. It’s a completely black image with very narrow rainbow color line that outlines the screen.

I suspect it’s because of the AMOLED screen. It could be something like the screen that gets turned off because something thinks that there are too few pixels active to even bother keeping it on, but then the system turns it on again because it shouldn’t be off. Then, after a few tries, the system thinks that there is an error and reboots to recovery
EDIT: I misread a comment saying it was fine on redmi note 7. I missed the fact that it was on a non-MIUI rom. Well, then it’s a MIUI problem. Nice

Somebody should try this wallpaper without the AMOLED. Probably the AMOLED screen could be the problem. I don’t think that the image is corrupted or something

You can store and execute code hidden within images. There is definitely some sort of malware hidden in the picture, possibly in the EXIF data.

Back in 2005-2006 you could literally take control of almost any phone with bluetooth via simple app. Mostly tried on Nokias and Sony Ericssons, since they were most popular in Poland.
You could literally wipe all the data, or send SMS, or copy all messages and contacts, or play the ringtone out loud… you get the point.

And yes, you didn’t need any bluetooth permissions from the attacked phone.

I’ve never said that every AMOLED screen has this problem. Never. I only said it’s because of AMOLED, meaning it’s connected. And that’s why other phones (like redmi note 7) that have a normal IPS screen work normally with this wallpaper. I meant that it’s a BAD MANAGEMENT of the AMOLED screen, on SYSTEM side (xiaomi). The panel itself isn’t a problem.

As an electronics engineer with some hardware programming experience, I highly suspect this is caused by a synchronization error. Most likely, one of the bits are distrupting poorly written synchronization algorithm.

    >You can store and execute code hidden within images. There is definitely some sort of malware hidden in the picture, possibly in the EXIF data.

    And the proofs are?…

E: after brief googling I found this: https://umbrella.cisco.com/blog/2019/07/24/picture-perfect-how-jpg-exif-data-hides-malware/

But chances that the picture set in android triggers javascript execution? Dunno about that.

E2: we have the picture provided in OP, so we can examine it. Nothing interesting in the EXIF so I think its not the case.

Apparently I misread a comment saying it was fine on redmi note 7. I missed the fact that it was on a non-MIUI rom. well ,then it’s a MIUI problem. Nice

Unfortunately no, nothing you described is correct.

First of all, (AM)OLED panels don’t work like backlit panels. Light is emitted in per pixel basis on a single layer. So every pixel is individual, that’s why they can get perfect black wherever they want.

Also even on back lit panels, there’s nothing such as “having too few pixels to light up”, that’s simply untrue. Panel controllers doesn’t work like that.

Also system cannot know if the panel is on/off when the panel controller returns a false positive.

    This is a MIUI issue.

Awkward, i downloaded it and set as wallpaper. Nothing happens, but it is not cut the way it has to be. I have Mi9.

Not sire what the problem is with your device. I checked the exif and did a malware check and nothing pops out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯[screenshot](https://i.imgur.com/RzEYMDt.jpg)

As I already said, the problem is there on IPS panels too, I had misread it. But you actually misunderstood my message too. what I meant was something else. I meant that exactly because every pixel is individual on AMOLED maybe MIUI had implemented something like “there are next to zero pixels on? Then I turn off COMPLETELY the screen (=touchscreen+the few pixels that actually were supposed to be on)”

No problem, PS: I think is safe use another rainbow backgrounds like this: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Mi9T/comments/czr0ka/rainbow\_border\_wallpaper\_for\_our\_people/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Mi9T/comments/czr0ka/rainbow_border_wallpaper_for_our_people/)

EDIT: I used this, it’s safe and no crashing, you can put a logo if you want

    Device: Mi 9T Pro

    I have solved it.
If you have put it and do not want to delete the data, in the recovery (TWRP / OrangeFox). Go to the following links and delete all “wallpapers”.

    /data/system/users/USER_ID/

It has some adobe tags, probably from where it was made.

We can rule that out by saving it as bmp in eg paint and then converting it back to png

    made this:

same image saved in paint as bmp adn then back to png. it lost all the xml header lines

now we just need a guinea pig: [https://i.imgur.com/1MSnTLF.png](https://i.imgur.com/1MSnTLF.png)

This problem just happened to me today, but with a different wallpaper that I downloaded a while ago, and I don’t remember where I took it.
Luckily I had the bootloader unlocked and I could boot a custom recovery via fastboot to erase the wallpaper config files in /data/system/users/0/ and restore the phone full functionality.
I just noticed that the wallpaper was basically the OP image with a red planet added in the lower part, I didn’t noticed the contour in the first time but it’s there. It’s not a rainbow colors contour, but a two-tone, gradually changing one.
So we could say that the bug is caused by the wallpapers that include the drawn screen boundaries, and it’s even more strange because my phone is a Mi 9T that doesn’t have a teardrop notch, but the contour in the wallpapers had it…

Here is the wallpaper that caused the bug to me, only 100 downloads and only for 7 days:

This is happening to me right now , What is funny is that I created the wallpaper ! I don’t get how a wallpaper can do this to a phone… I own a **Mi Mix 3**. Could somebody help me with the recovery thing ? I’m not a specialist with android fastboot.

Help is much appreciated since I have some important content on it and can’t wipe everything. Thanks !
