Go to Settings -> Apps -> Manage Apps
Click on Permissions, then Autostart.
This update put all apps on Autostart ON.
I had to switch quite a few back off, since I keep only a few on autostart.
EDIT: One of the best features I love of Xiaomi phones is the ability to keep the apps “off” and yes, that thing is going to save battery. Didn’t make sense to me they put all ON. I don’t want (for example) my torrent downloading app to start in the background automatically whenever I turn my phone ON.
EDIT2: Keep autostart ON for apps you usually wants to receive notifications from (messaging, WhatsApp, email, system apps if any) or apps you have a widget on your main screen (weather, note, etc) all other apps you seldom use or don’t care put them on OFF.
Autostart ON – the app will restart automatically whenever you restart the phone
Autostart OFF – the app will stay “sleeping” until you open/use it
Ok then. I thought autostart will only affect system/battery after turning on device, but I found out, here and on some another page, that having apps in ,,autostart” settings can drain a battery faster, which for me is a little bit odd thing, but ok. Thanks for reply.
I would say it helps. There’s no reason to keep apps autostarting when you seldom use them
I know it’s old thread, but in MIUI 14 turning off autostart still will save battery? I turned it off (I tried some things for Firefox and find out on autostart I had FB, notes and some others I don’t want) for everything (I rarely turn off my phone) and I think battery drainage is a little bit lower.
Could you post a screenshot here?
Seems they fixed the longstanding notifications problems, by massacring the battery by turning absolutely everything they can possibly find, on! 🤣
Nice but in my case not work because Google play store install some tiktok and kwai app all time and I must disable Google play store and then half of android app don’t work.
This wasn’t the case for my after updating, still the ones that I had set before.
My battery sucks now after update on my 9se.
Today I noticed only had 65% battery, checked battery details and only 40 mins screen on time!
That was just browsing the net, and checking a few messages on my commute and lunch break.
I also have my screen brightness pretty low, less than half way.
I had such half of my apps with the Autostart enabled. Just turned it off and gonna keep an eye to see if it goes back to the normal battery life i had before the system update.
Btw: mine is a Mi 6. I don’t know why but i always get those upgrades before others Mi 6. hahaha
I did have the exact same issue, it was the opposite
Be patient. Everybody is gonna get it.
Definitely yes
Thanks for your info ! I guess I deserve all the downvotes then 🙂
But I honestly haven’t noticed any app I use that don’t give me notifications like I expect them to. Maybe they all happen to use GSM…
Edit: GMS
I don’t know what else to say but to post a video showing that in fact, for my phone anyway, keeping Autostart off for Whatsapp does not impact the ability to receive notifications.
https://streamble.com/wqiuv
In the video I basically showed how Autostart isn’t enabled for Whatsapp, then killed every running app and restarted my phone. Without starting Whatsapp I then sent a message from another phone.
But if many others are saying what I observe to be a fact isn’t actually the case, then I take back my advice…
Then why people got it outside of India? Check the other threads, people with global and EEA roms got it. I thought maybe there is something I debloated and I got no update but neeeh, I also didn’t get it on Poco yet
I’m still waiting for the update on my mi8
Excellent thanks.
I don’t know why but i found everything ON except Whatsapp, Telegram and Instagram. In makes no sense. I think before the MIUI 11 update was the opposite or almost.
Thank you btw
The official thread i saw on Mi Community was only for india MIUI. I saw one that claimed it was for global MIUI and it say phase 1 was like 15 to 22/23 november
Reading comments here a lot of people got it with global and EEA rom
I have got a mi 9 that I had to reset after I soft bricked it. I haven’t gotten the MIUI 11 and I’m still on August security patch. Should I be worried?
I guess yes, I don’t want to have apps running on the background for no reasons when I restart my phone.
Except of course for messaging apps, email apps (Gmail), weather apps, etc.
After the update I restarted the phone and didn’t even notice all apps where on autostart ON but the battery was going faster than usual.
Then I noticed in my notification menu a lot of notifications from apps I don’t give a damn.
I have Orbot (Tor browser) on my phone and it was showing as running (I only use it a few times).
I have utorrent and that was running also.
I have amazwatches (an app to change the screen on the mi band 4) and the app was running too.
Ironically, thanks to those notifications, I realized the update put all, and I repeat, ALL apps, on autostart.
I left the autostart ON for the apps I want to get a notification (Gmail, WhatsApp, Darksky and some others)
If it is an app you only use when you open it and you are not interested in receiving a notification (for example gaming apps) better put those on autostart off.
Should people be doing this whether they have battery issues or not ?
Oh i probably misread then
… no 🙂 (with a lot of respect)
I am using MIUI 10 right now. Last I checked Whatsapp doesn’t have Autostart enabled.
After rebooting as soon as I unlock it, Whatsapp starts showing notifications.
I will double check later when I get home. But I haven’t had any issue with Whatsapp notification before and Autostart is never on for this app.
Edit: I start running into problems with apps not receiving notifications when I turn off “start in background” however. This is on by default for a lot of apps.
Edit: checked. My phone behaves like what I said. See this clip: https://streamable.com/wqiuv
It does have to do with notifications, it enables apps and their background services to start automatically at boot (and if they get force closed too, i think). If you don’t enable it you will only start to receive notifications when you open the app for the first time after a device reboot.
On stock MIUI global this setting is automatically enabled for apps like Whatsapp, or at least it was on MIUI 10.
That’s his point. I’m guessing before switching it back he was getting 40% gone
I don’t think Autostart has anything to do with notifications.
Your probably thinking about “start in background”. This is a different setting altogether.
I stand by my recommendation – if someone doesn’t know what Autostart is, then just turn all apps off in the Autostart section (assuming what OP says about MIUI 11 switching them on automagically is true). No app has this turned on by default. A user who knows what this function does needs to manually turn this on for any app.
That’s pretty normal. I think everyone has that
No, that’s just India’s release date. For Europe/global, it’s between 15 and 23 november i thought
still on miui 10 but, I disabled all of them and still got double notifications all the time, be it whatsapp, telegram, or other chat apps
It’s nothing big broo.
When ever u switch on the phone the apps start automatically before u open it.
well it is already 1.11 and still no update for 9T… shouldnt it be till 31.10?
Shit .. thanks!!
Quick question, if I turn all of them off, will my chats’ notification still appear on time?
If you don’t know what it is, turn all of them off
Edit: downvoted probably because many think this is bad advice that will cause notifications to stop working. But this video clip shows how in MIUI 10 (i.e. my phone) I have Autostart off for Whatsapp yet I continue to receive Whatsapp notifications even after a restart of my phone.

If this isn’t the case for others, or if MIUI 11 drastically changes this behavior, then sorry I take back my advice.
Woah so it did on my Mi9 with Xiaomi.eu
:O
Didn’t see the situation you mention. Still thanks for your sharing.
Thanks man
Thank you! From miui 10
Good catch
