I have a wife and 3 teen kids at home and all of them uses Xiaomi. I have Note 3, 4 Mi Max and Mi Max 2, and Mi A2.
One thing i hate and despise about Xiaomi Global roms is that they put ads in the roms. For what reason? Phone belongs to us. Bought with warranty. Why put ads on the phone. I have many times posted it in the Forum and gain large support but you still put those dumb ads. WHY? If its a rented phone that is different. But i bought the phone with hard earn money. Why put ads at all? WHY?
Seriously ditching Xiaomi for Oppo.
Neither am I, but just because your not, doesn’t mean what you say to do is right.
I am not getting any ads any where except in Security app though.
Rozsądny krok Panie Januszu XD
GCam is better than MIUI Camera
It most likely costs something near that to make the thing
Ads are only in Asian countries, you won’t see them in Germany, UK, Poland etc
I wish I could disable Adblock in vanced, if the settings is there I never found it
Change your region to Europe or just don’t use MIUI
Why? Because that is how they subsidize their hardware in China and India.
Am a new mi users and i have note 7s , but by this situation maybe i should git rid of it
It’s a a native feature in android 9 or 10, can’t remember but it’s accessible thru the ‘hidden settings for MIUI’,
DNS is a really unsecure protocol, all webpages u visit need to translate to the actual IP, that is DNS, your phone and computer asks ex ‘what is the IP for reddit.com’, in clear text visible to your ISP and to the government.
That leaves u open to data collection and even worse, DNS manipulation where the request will not send u to the correct IP but to some malicious site, this is very common in Russia and probably many more countries.
Encrypting the requests and letting a server of your choice handle and filter out the bad requests your phone and browser to without your knowledge provides saftey and gives better battery, and less ads and tracking if you want to.
Hope I explained it in a easy to understand way.
I turned on adblock thru a dns and it basically blocked all my mobile data lul. what do you mean by dns over https? upvoted you cuz ppl downvote you even tho you give some nice tips… shame on you reddit!
Not most of them, you can disable every single one of them. Download Xiaomi ADB Fastboot Tools (at pc) to delete system apps and disable the remaining ads from each app’s settings.
You can turn off ads from every apps’ settings. For example, if you see ads on File Manager, simply go to the File Manager’s settings > About > Recommendations and turn that off. For Music app, go to its Settings > Advanced Settings > Receive Recommendations and turn that off. You can do this process with all Xiaomi apps on your phones.
Hope this helps 🙂
not having a life means being a nolife, stop using terms that you don’t understand especially on the internet. you know literally nothing about me, but you categorized me as a nolife to strat a conversation, I’m done here so don’t respond to this, seems like you are a very busy person, don’t waste your time talking to strangers, cheers
if you delete an app because of notifications instead of going to the app settings and disabing them (or not even that, using Android’s own notification system and disabing them from there), you are the problem, not the phone. It takes seconds to do that.
I use the gallery, rarely the file manager, but neither have any ads. I have opened other Xiaomi apps aswell and there were none apart from ehat google shows you like usual.
I am running Global MIUI though.
it has nothing to do with having a life or not, besides I never said that I’m better or worse than people that want everything to work out of the box, we are just different when it comes to tech stuff
What region do you have set, I never get any ads
Vanced works without Problems for me the last 2 Years 🙂
As for the themes app, I’m not getting any ads after opening it but for installing from play store you need to disable app scan after installing in the security app.
Instead of flashing custom ROM I recommend unlock bootloader only, root it up and install AdAway from F-Droid. Ads in browsers and system as well beautifully disappear. In a past I had Huawei P9, Samsung Galaxy, LG phones and always first thing a did was flashing custom ROM. But MIUI (11.0.1 Global) is such a great system that for the very first time kept original one and only rooted (for root I didn’t flash custom boot and made it by myself so whole system is almost factory new ;))
However there is another great anti-ads tool which doesn’t require rooted system called Blokada https://blokada.org/ I’ve been using it for few weeks and it’s really great alternative for someone who don’t want to root phone
First it’s pretty unlikely anyone that works for Xiaomi reads your post, those Mi-forums are moderated by volunteers.
Next, you can disable the ads. But unless you are rooted you will see occasional ads just as you would on any phone.
If you root your phone you will never see ads. You could also unlock your bootloader and use a custom Rom. AOSP or Miui based ROMs.
I can’t recommend Xiaomi.EU ROMs enough. Its Miui with no ads and no bloatware. There are 2 versions of software: The stable which is updated every 2 to 3 months, and the weekly build which it based on the weekly development Rom . Both are excellent and the weekly Rom is bleeding edge, so expect occasional bugs, if you use it. Personally, I rarely ever see issues.
you can turn off each ad
all of the devices he listed have really good community support. especially the Mi A2…
good! yt was much better when being a youtuber wasn’t a business but a hobby!
Aren’t they available in Settings > System app updates?
But I want updates for some of their apps, which isn’t available in play store
EEA (or EU, not sure) laws specifically forbids it.
EEU version of MIUI doesn’t have ads. Do you live in an EEU country?
EEU version of MIUI doesn’t have ads. Do you live in an EEU country?
EEU version of MIUI doesn’t have ads. Do you live in an EEU country?
Yeah, sadly. At least admit that it can be disabled.
Some MIUI regional variants doesn’t have ads. I only know EEU (European Economic Area), though. Global version has ads
Disable it. Turn off its notifications. I never used it and never will. I understand that they’re trying to make a Play Store alternative, but it just doesn’t work outside China
Especially with that amount of ads. Ugh.
Same here, could it be the region? I’m from Singapore.
But if you use vanced then youtubers won’t make any money from the ads on the video thought 😕
Apparently you can disable the ads pretty easily. He blocked anyone who pointed out this fact lmao
Install Blokada and live a happy life. It doesnt need root permission and free on their website (not on playstore)
People generally use gcam for better camera quality. Might not have as much functionality eg. portrait mode/video might have problems but generally for just pictures, they work well. You could consider realme since they either have less or no ads in EU, and its easier to disable ads in realme since the setting is a global one instead of having to hunt down each stock app setting in miui.
Must depend on the region, I have a MI9T, global rom, android 10 without mods, running MIUI 11. Never got a single ad, I live in the Philippines.
Try fiddle the setting and stock apps setting. I managed to turn it all down
I just need the hardware, so I just request to unlock it, wait a week or so, unlock, and install custom rom.
Just a 3 minute research would have told you that Xiaomi puts ads in their phones. It’s part of their revenue.
Another 3 minute search would have revealed that you can easily disable the ads. FFS, it’s on this **sub wiki**. Is that hard to read instead of complaining?
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/ads
You want cheap phones but at the same time you don’t want to deal with a minor inconvenience.
With an internet connection:
Navigate to settings > Additional Settings > Authorization and Revocation, and click on toggle beside msa from the list.wait for 10 sec timer to pass and then click on revoke. (Try it until you succeed)
It removes most of them. If you want a more detailed guide:
[Here](https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-disable-ads-in-MIUI-11?share=1)
>youtube vanced
Many of the latest reviews are “This app doesn’t work!!” and “Only turns on WiFi and ask to Cast Screen”
It’s affordable for a reason, even realme ( a sub brand of oppo ) is following the same strategy
Same, I’ll dig through every single setting in the options as well.
Same here on my Mi Mix2s with global beta.
I heard the ads only shows if you set the country to India.
That setting doesn’t turn the service off, it just turns personalized ads off. You still get the ads, they’re just random instead of based on your behaviour. Maybe you should do what you preach and do your own research.
MI A2 has a better EIS than MI A3.
Disabled ads on setting. But Xiaomi native app like Theme has 5 second ad before you can use the theme.
2ndly, some replied this could be base on country. Maybe. But that is unfair. Why the prejudice? Google allows ads to be customized and disabled. Why Xiaomi forced in on SEA countries? Why no ads for UK? Some European country?
Don’t be an asshole. Ads is disabled on google setting, but every native Mi apps has bloatware on my phone. Dick head!
Tried Custom ROM already! Camera fucked on MI A2.
Open the Mi Theme app and there will be 5 second ad everytime you open it.
Each time finishing downloading any app from Playstore, an ad will display first.
No. This is not virus or infected by a malware. I have thoroughly checked everything.
One of the reasons I went with Mi A3
Won’t that screw your camera original settings that comes with the original ROM?
Hello, YouTube vanced?
EDIT: Seems some of you are taking ads for granted, and with Android 10 native DNS over HTTPS it’s really easy to stop 99% of ads in any application, YouTube is an anomaly but please use the ‘youtube vanced’ and save time for your life instead of watching pointless ads and get all YouTube premium features and more, for free
I hope you found the hidden option to use secret DNS.
If not, download the app called ‘hidden settings MIUi’ but really it’s s festure of Android 10, point that to a DNS I ‘found’, KGB.haxx.info and you won’t be seeing ads anywhere, it’s great and also reduced battery drain, almost 50% of DNS request are blocked! It’s awesome
Yeah if you want price of mind and don’t mind miui that’s okay . I have the Chinese version and luckily the bootloader was already unlocked when it arrived. I didn’t gave to wait to get unlocking permission which was great I installed my favourite rom day 1 it’s to the point where when someone asked me this week my opinion with Xiaomi phones I honestly couldn’t give them one because I barely used miui. I think it was like a day or so until I worked out how to get twrp installed.
Lineage
Pixel Experience
Havoc
Just choose one and problem solved.
It’s shocking how fast things have changed really. 5 years ago when I came here it was probably 75% just Iphones. No you see everything really. Iphones are still popular but much less now. Maybe 20%.
buy xiaomi phone > unlock bootloader > flash rom > flash magisk > install energized > happy dance moves
Strange if that’s the case in Thailand. In Lithuania it’s everyone really. I could think of at least 10 classmates who use iPhones, my sister and mom do, neighbors do… It’s just a lot of people… I think they’re missing out, but to each their own I guess
Maybe for old people. Iphones are the phone of the past and old timers where I live.
What a helpful comment
With Google
It’s like youtube, it’s free, if there wasn’t for ads, it would be like Netflix 10 euros a month.
100% true. If it makes my phone cheaper who cares. Easy to disable.
Who’s lying? Many Xiaomi phones have ads built in. The Mi9T is for Europe and doesn’t have ads.
How does someone do that?
I’m still running MIUI but in my 5 months of using the phone I have not received a single ad. I have no clue why.
Yeah it was already disabled on me but i still see ads time to time. I guess rom change is a must to fix. For my M6 at least.
Go to settings-password & security- privacy- ad service and turn it off, duh.. atleast do research going out all blamin and stuff
Music , videos , gallery all of them i disabled it but still got this ads
Well I’m also paying for a sub-par translation.. They are also selling services like cloud so I don’t think they should make ads so invasive.
I buy Xiaomi devices to install custom roms easily
Ranting is fine for serious issue. But you are buying cheapest phones in the world with specs of much more expensive phones, there must be a way for that to happen, they are certainly not giving it for free to you.
The time you used to post this could also be spend searching how to disable the ads.
It’s a flip phone. Cutting edge tech at the moment. That’s why $1.4k tag
Try force-stopping the app, then deleting app data and cache
If the ads are still there then maybe use another music player. Mi Music isn’t really that good anyway (for me at least)
My system Music player app already has that setting turned off, but I still get ads. What the hell ?
I have the global ROM, it may be country based, I’m in the UK, never seen an AD on my Redmi 7 on MiUI 11 since I bought it
Some guy on Twitter complaining his $1,400 galaxy z flip has ads
You guys are getting ads?
Somehow I was sure that other to complain OP won’t show up to the discussion.
Kinda sad as this “rant” comes up very often and poeple refuse to admit that this is the business modell they opted into on their own.
And also the fact that it can be circumvented.
Why have I never seen a MIUI ad on my phone?
because the cheap prices + high specs come at a tradeoff, or they would be losing money. I read that they only earn 5% on every phone, while iphones have like 300% profit margin…… They gotta feed themselves too. You’re self-entitled, OP.
Moreover, the ads can be disabled… And you will see ads anyway if you download ANY free game on the play store, browse web, etc, why you mad?
Sliding the recommendations to off is so hard, on my phone that’s got 1200$ specs that I paid 200$ for.
Alright, maybe I’m wrong. I don’t really know much about the prices of the devices
Exactly why apple sells.
Holy frick, $1,4000 and the phone looks horrible
Not that much. For the price of those you can get a solid midranger with better specs than the iPhone.
Flagships are still very expensive… The mid-rangers are decent, but more expensive than Xiaomi… I really don’t know… 2nd or 3rd Gen iPhones are also a good choice I think
Yeah, it started with MIUI 9. It caused a lot of uproar on the official forum, then they included the option to disable them. My first xiaomi phones came with MIUI 6 and it had no ads
Its literally their business model and doesnt take more than 5min of googling for you to learn before buying. If you’re looking for cheap devices, be prepared for compromises.
Every time I get a new xiaomi phone I immediately start the process of installing another rom, xiaomi.eu specifically. No ads and many useful features not included in the global rom. It can be a tiring process, but a worthy one.
Well sorry, Android is just a bit of a different experience. For me it does work out of the box… but with a little bit if setting up… There’s just more customising you can do and I think that’s the beauty of it. So I don’t know, I’d say try and get the iPhones when they’re like 2 generations old and maybe they’ll be a bit cheaper? Maybe Samsung flagships would be the Android counterpart of that. I really don’t know…
Custom Rom is the way to go, and if you like the MIUI features there are roms that bring the same MIUI look but in custom Rom form.
Or doesn’t want to risk messing up his phone.
Most people don’t want to mess with their phones since it can fuck it up.
Same goes for Samsung and Huawei, but Huawei shouldn’t be an option until the ban is over. But overall I’d go for Samsung since they’re cheaper, no apple logo for extra price, same/better specs and repair prices are much cheaper. I don’t wanna fear to break my phone and have to pay half the price of the new one. UI is better than before and I think it’ll suit the OP.
Like i have a note 8 pro with the ads I let stay
I recently got a redmi note 8, my first Xiaomi phone, and I haven’t seen a single ad anywhere, but I see people endlessly moan about ads. Where are they? I didn’t even know disabling recommendations was a thing til this thread so am I just completely overlooking these ads?
I never had ads on my Mi 9T
I’m so confused when you guys make these posts .. I have a week old note 8 and I have no ads at all .. is this a region based thing ?
Good luck
Blokada for the win.
Iw would also probably take less than writings a long ass rant.
They aren’t that cheap anymore tbh, I think xiaomi burned through too much cash and has to increase profitability across the board.
The fact they are pushing Mi upmarket and spinning off Redmi is indicative of this.
I’ve never seen an ad on my 9T
Maybe I’ve disabled it right away after unboxing but I doubt that as it was my first Android device
Still waiting for Android 10 tho…
And bought a xiaomi A3 which still wait for Android despite being an Android “One”…
Got to dig into custom ROMs, it’s getting ridiculous to this point
You can disable it…
I do expect everything work out of the box because I simply don’t have time anymore to fight with my smartphone. However, in my country iPhones are up to 10 times more expensive than the best Xiaomi device. This is simply not an option for most of us.
Xiaomi is required to abide by EU laws. Therefore I recommend you to change your region to an European country.
did i hear an amen?
XIAOMI EU #TrueLove
unfortunately for me it doesn’t work with certain apps, the “getapps” app doesn’t even have that option
Do you have internet access at all? Do you know how to search stuff from the internet?
Damn, all you need is a little bit of effort on your end. It’s not like the ads are permanent. And then there are also custom ROMs out there but considering how you wouldn’t even bother searching at all, I’m not surprised you’re here complaining about something you can fix yourself because you’re either too lazy or just plain dumb.
I’m not defending Xiaomi’s decision to put ads on MIUI but I just hate seeing people like you who just complains/nags and never tries to find for another solution. Get with the times, people use search sites nowadays.
Oppo has the worst software of any phone manufacturer ever. I’d rather buy an iPhone. And before buying an iPhone I’d rather just not own a phone.
Sadly, the OP is the crybaby type who doesn’t like to exert any effort in disabling the ads himself and would rather make rants. It’s not even that difficult to use Google to search for these kinds of things and yet there are still people like him.
also true
They’re soooo easy to turn off, though! I hate ads as much as the next fella, but you can literally turn them off in two clicks and my understanding is that it’s just for system apps, right?
I usually hide those in my app drawer and install their Google equivalents. Turn on autostart for each of those, disable MIUI Battery Saver and you’re good to go!
You seriously can’t beat Xioami’s price/performance ratio, imho. Or, like many folks have recommended, unlock using their tool and install Xiaomi.eu – they have the ads removed already!
Just spent 20$ more and buy a global version
That’s how they make cheap phones with top tier specs.
Funny guy. Because you bought a cheap phone that’s why.
You don’t need to look at every options ever… A simple Google search before ranting on Reddit would help tho
I know, it’s the solution to the problem it’s a bit complicated and annoying but ads in your rom are worse than the time required to unlock the bootloader and install either of the ROMs I have mentioned.
It only took me 20 mins or so to go from stock to lineage os on my dad’s Redmi note 4. The main annoyance is applying for unlocking permissions and waiting. I feel ads is the main reason custom ROMs are do popular in Xiaomi devices.
[Block ads on Xiaomi phones using Private DNS](https://in.pcmag.com/android-apps/133611/how-to-block-ads-in-miui-without-root)
I suggest buying an iPhone for the second type of people and I don’t mean it in a rude way. They surely do their stuff great and it’s great out of the box, no need to mess around… Also it’s a quality phone, overpriced sure, but you’re paying for the logo as well…
This dude is a ignorant human being that doesn’t do any research
I mean that it’s irritating, but come on. I’ll trade ads that I can deactivate once and will be gone forever for a great price to performance phone.
Judy buy the global version before you go and hate.
That’s why I switched ROMs tbh
/u/Tompuvan Why do you thnk they sell their phones so cheap?! BECAUSE OF ADS.
Now if you don’t like it, flash a custom rom or buy another brand.
the ads come from customs roms installed by tierce vendors, if you want to remove them, get the official rom and install it.
two kinds of people, the ones that search through every single option when they buy a new device and the ones that put their sim card in and that’s it, they never customize anything, for example when I buy a new device, first thing I do is hardware test, when everything works fine I start digging in every single option that is available in every single app and it usually takes a few hours but I guess I’m the minority, the majority expects everything to work out of the box
https://twitter.com/robotodd/status/1229768673352724480?s=09
Pick a country from the EU at the region, and you will not see ads anymore.
Also, to block all ads including from all apps and websites, use AdGuard private dns.
I have mi 9t pro with global rom and I didnt saw any ad..
Exactly… 👍
That was an interesting read, thanks for sharing!
I’m jumping Samsung ship and looking at Xiaomi as the alternative since I was really happy with my last phone and my SO has Poco F1 which is just as awesome.
Ads are not a deal breaker for me if you can disable most of them. But it does bother me slightly because it feels like misleading advertising, I would imagine there are millions of users who have no idea they can disable them (just like OP).
Interesting. I don’t have any ads on my global mi9t and my brother’s mi9 also doesn’t have any
Android One doesn’t have ads. OP is taking about MIUI devices
I pretty sure that they started doing this with later versions of MIUI and unless Xiaomi finds some other way of getting a good amount of revenue, I think they will still keep placing ads in future MIUI updates. If they put way too much though, other countries might introduce laws which will ban specific apps and services to stop intruding into people’s privacy. The link where I got the info from:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.androidauthority.com/xiaomi-ads-business-966584/amp/
I didn’t get any ads on the stock rom on my mi mix 2. And none of my friend got ads on their xiaomi devices.
That’s actually insane, I knew they had some ads but didn’t know they put so much emphasis on them as one of the proper sources of revenue. Do you know if they always used to do this? I had Mi3 like four years ago and never seen a single ad without enabling/disabling anything.
But I do wonder how long it’ll take before it won’t be possible to disable them without installing a custom ROM, especially if their margins drop even lower.
Works fine for me but here’s the direct link: https://github.com/Szaki/XiaomiADBFastbootTools
Hmm, link isn’t work?
Sorry… I meant some of Xiaomi Revenue and not most… Will edit previous post… “In the third quarter of 2018, Xiaomi’s advertising revenue grew by 109.8 percent year-on-year, reaching 3.2 billion yuan (~$477 million)” – Android Authority.
Source for that last sentence?
>nderstand you hate Xiaomi for putting ads… but have you considered why phones from Xiaomi are way more cheaper than other flagships? Their profit margin for these phones are low so that they can attract customers so to compensate for the low revenue, they advertise in their roms. Most of Xiaomi’s revenue
Mi A2 is a android one phone i.e almost stock, vanilla android. If they put ads in there google will smack xiaomi’s ass.
Switch to a custom ROM. Its infuriating they put adds, but as others say its their business model.
You can also remove the whole .APK with the Xiaomi ADB tool. Additionally, for German region there are no ads.
>I have many times posted it in the Forum and gain large support but you still put those dumb ads.
That’s funny.
>Why put ads at all? WHY?
A simple google search may have suggested you that that’s their business model. You can buy a high-end chipset at mid-range prices just because they get some of their revenue from services/ads linked to that phone.
xiaomi eu gang
édit : xiaomi aren’t the only one who put ads on their phone
In each app’s Settings.
For example, in File Manager, it’s in Menu > Settings > About > Recommendations
Basically it’s either on app setting > Recommendations or app setting > About > Recommendations
Why are there Google apps that come pre-installed? Because capitalism thats why.
Where is this option?
Yep, its 10 minutes of work. And its not just the Xiaomi crap you can also remove the Google crap.
Where? I don’t see them
have you considered turning off the ads in settings?
Well that’s the reason they are so cheap. If you don’t like ads use a custom rom.
Simple unlock the bootloader and install either a custom rom and gapps like lineage is or pixel experience or flash xiaomi.eu which debloats and removes the ads from miui.
yeah, compared to other brand that needed cmd, it’s pretty great (I know they can use Saki tools, but they don’t have the curated apps compared to Xiaomi).
Stop the ads by turning them off in some of each app.
Otherwise you’re going to be paying more for the handset
ADB debloating is so easy now it’s great
I guess you’re right but I would class Xiaomi as a low cost brand not necessarily a low end brand. I would say all those more obscure brands like Cubot, Oukitel and the likes are low end.
Did they add the system wide ad killer in MIUI 11? I don’t think I ever heard anything from anyone when MIUI 11 first started rolling out?
just disable on the app itself, and if you want to stop the ads system completely, just use Saki tools Xiaomi (no need to root).
Yes. Xiaomi EU is if you want MIUI without bloatware and ads
I also have ads in standard browser
They do it to actually be profitable, you can very easily disable them by debloating though.
https://old.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/debloat
Xiaomi.eu is better than everything else if you don’t want extreme changes. So install that.
I really don’t understand why this hate, it’s not that hard to disable it!
You can disable the ads. Just like what comment above says, it’s their business model. They have low margin for the hardware.
You expect Xiaomi to be alive without revenue, is that what you mean? At least Xiaomi let you unlock the bootloader, hell, they even let you remove the ads completely without root.
Also, I’ve never heard Mi A2 have an ads. And Oppo have ads too tho.
Yes you can stop the ads by simply deactivating them
Or you can turn of the ads by heading to app setting and turn off receive recommendations
I like MIUI and am lucky enough to not have seen many intrusive ads. Simply flashing a custom rom isn’t always an option to some people.
If you don’t like miui Rom, just install another custom rom which is stable for your device 😁
Unfortunately, that’s their business model. They can sell cheap phones with high specs because a part of their income is from ads on their phone. It’s a kind of a trade-off. They categorise themselves as an internet company, not a hardware one.
The ads *can* be disabled, just head to an app’s settings, then turn off “receive recommendations”. That’s enough to turn them off. Or if you really want to move away but like the hardware (gotta admit they make phones with killer hardware) and don’t mind modding your phone, just unlock your bootloader and install a custom ROM.
I understand you hate Xiaomi for putting ads… but have you considered why phones from Xiaomi are way more cheaper than other flagships? Their profit margin for these phones are low so that they can attract customers so to compensate for the low revenue, they advertise in their roms. A good margin of Xiaomi’s revenue come from ads…
Edit: Changed incorrect info
Why? They want more money, that’s it. I hope they stop because it makes them look a low end brand when they’re clearly not. I use Blokada to block as many ads as I can and it blocks a stupid amount of ads from Xiaomi and Google.
