I expected less details of the Milky way, because these were taken in a light polluted town with high humidity in the air.
The images were taken with 32s shutter, 1600 ISO, infinity focus, with the stock camera, and edited in Lightroom.
I think these pictures are turned out pretty good. I will try to make more pictures out of town, in August at New Moon, because I think I can get more details of the Milky way in total darkness.
What do you guys think? Have you ever tried out your Xiaomi device for these kind of shots?
Edit: Here’s an article about these pictures: https://inchina.tech/2019/07/10/stunning-milky-way-photos-taken-with-the-xiaomi-mi-9/
Much better than oneplus7!
Can you post pre-edited ones? Curious how they turned out without processing.
Yes, here are the uncompressed original and edited shots: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qiQotVtLr2f8Exj38
That’s some nice editing.
Is that with stock camera? Tripod too?
Thank you!
Yes, stock camera with tripod.
Very nice! Do you edit them using the Lightroom app? If so, what exactly do you?
Yes, I edit the pictures with Lightroom.
I mostly use the Clarity, Dehaze function, those two are the best for highlighting the stars, and the Milky way. I change the color temperature, tint, and saturation too, to have the pictures that blue/purpleish color.
Great, thanks!
Really nice photos. I was not expecting a phone to be able to take them, especially since it does not have the “super zoom” or AI features like the P30 Pro. Do you mind if I feature them on my site? Off course, I will give credit. PM if you want more details. Thanks in advance.
Yo man. Give the gcam port a try my dude. I have had some amazing scary good pictures coming out of this phone with it.
They look great! It’s most certainly becoming that point where that best camera you have is the one you’re carrying on you becoming that level of adequacy that the last decade or so we’ve all opined about.
How?
Too good mate
any reason to use 1600 ISO? the max is 3200. too many noise?
What version do you use with MIUI on the Mi 9?
Does the Mi9 shoot raw files?
> Have you ever tried out your Xiaomi device for these kind of shots?
got some laughable results tbh. i just dont bother with any sort of low light photos.
your last picture is very nice. good results, but it is their flagship after all.
Curious as well

Follow the link here. Some brave soul has done the testing and stuff necessary for us haha. I use the Xtreme version with a custom XML for the best results. Feel free to message if you have more questions.
Happy cakeday! Mine was yesterday! Should have celebrated at midnight 😀
Urnyx’s version: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-urnyx05/ It supports all 3 cameras (enable it in the settings). Here are few samples (I always tag what camera was used): https://instagram.com/kokeshkokesh
It produces awesome photos. But foe astrophotography you need manual camera. I would give stock camera a try, but we have no nights here in northern Sweden for at least about a month, so I have to wait.
Thanks for the link mate.
Urnyx’s version as kokesh said.
I got literally mind blown when I saw the night sight… I mean, Jesus. The camera on this phone is already impressively good. But with gcam? LOL, it jumps up there with the S10 and other models.
No, there isn’t much more noise with 3200 ISO, the reason is simply because it was just too bright, because of the light pollution: https://imgur.com/4kHJQmZ
It would be useful in full darkness, away from towns, cities 🙂
You can, but not with the stock camera app.
Okay thanks!
Did you shoot this in raw? Awesome shots btw
Thank you! No, only JPEGs
these are some great pictures man.
Amazing! I’m an astrophotographer myself and I’m amazed you can do that. Might try that on my mi9t when I get out of the city. Can’t you use raw in the stock camera tho? Been looking for that option thanks
Damn, if I only could see such a sky.
I live in Turin and being a big city night is always pretty much lighten up, and also there is some pollution
No, you can’t take RAW photos in stock camera unfortunately. But you can with third party camera app
Thanks. You can se the progress feom LGP500, Galaxy S2, Xperia Z2, Oneplus3 to current Mi9. I still say that OP3 camera was a delight, once you didn’t use the stock camera. Same with Mi9.
The last picture is amazing
Thank you for the tip, appreciate it!
Which version of Urnyx’s gcam are you using as I’ve tried a number and they all fail, using Mi9 Lite which maybe the issue.
