Sold my old MacBook Pro and bought a Mi Notebook Pro, a Mi Mix 2s AND have change left over.

It’s up there in the comment if you scroll back up.
Ok
You may mock my friend, but I stand by my comment. The trackpad on MacBooks are spectacular. That’s doesn’t mean I am a massive fanboy of MacBooks, I simply think that the hardware is exceptionally good.
Lmao, the ignorance is astounding.
Wait, there’s a gaming headset? How is it?
Techtablets is the reason I bought my last 2 Xiaomi phones (plus 1 for my gf!) An awesome reviewer with no bias whatsoever. Just clean, informative reviews that really look at every aspect of phones, tablets etc. For anyone that hasn’t already check out his YouTube channel!
Not a chance, this computer will be worth anything like a MacBook in years to come. One of the great things about apple products is the way they keep there value.
There is simply no trackpad better than the MacBooks
I have the same Notebook Pro i5 as you and I am running macOS on it and using it as my main. Really pleased with it coming from an old macbook before fully recommend checking it out:
Here are the files, actively maintained:

Only thing is wifi doesn’t work out of the box, you have 2 choices – you can either install a new wifi card in the 2nd SSD slot or I just use a nano USB wifi, this one is small AC and dual band with up to date drivers:

Real deal
Thanks stranger 🙂
Congrats. Also got the mi mix 2s recently and it’s, by far, the best phone i’ve ever had 😀
Oh that’s good to know. Thank you very much!
This laptop🔥
Oh, for sure, I totally agree.
Haha, keen eye.
Many thanks

Here you go.
That’s perfect! Thank you very much.
Nope, this is about maxing out specs and the Lenovos are a tier ahead of Apple.
I’m posting this everywhere, but there is a way to change the fan curve: http://en.miui.com/thread-1551743-1-1.html
Read the first answer in that thread.
I need your wallpaper…
Unfortunately I’m not from Europe
You are using the same background as me! 🙂
thanks
Could’ve used literally any brand instead. I decided to compare inside hardware specs and therefore the machine I picked has hardware much closer to the Mac. You decided the outside size and weight alone is what makes the machines alike and is the decisive factor. I guess you have a point, one is heavier than the other but I disagre. I still think given the high end hardware used, it’s expected to have a slightly bigger computer and not be the deal breaker. If you’re paying for such a powerful machine, you’re buying it because you need the specs, not it’s size. Plenty of other better sized low powered machines around with better prices, even among apple (air, etc).
Actually, it’s even recommended to be a bit bigger. It’s so thin, apple’s cooling solution struggles keeping the laptop under 100°c on load to prevent thermal throttle (there’s a few reviews for this around).
As far as I can tell from Lenovo us webpage, the lenovo X1, the machine you picked, it’s most expensive config I can find on their webpage costs around 2000, not 7000. And, apart from it’s weight and slightly reduced dimensions, isn’t even a similar machine at all, imo. Best I see over there is a 14′ machine (the Alienware and the Mac I compared are both 15), with an old outdated i7 7th gen(the alien and Mac have an i9), 16gb RAM (32gb on both), 512gb storage (4tb ssd on both), Intel graphics card (both the alien + Mac have a FAR more powerful one) + no customization options beyond that. I can’t see how you more easily compare the Mac with the X1 than a similarly specd machine as the alien but whatever.
It a difference of opinion, agree to disagree, I guess. Anyone who is willing to spend 7k on a computer probably cares a lot about what’s inside of it too, not only it’s size.
I got the i5, 8GB, Mx150 variant. More than enough for me.

Here it is, it’s just a cheap magic mouse look alike.
I’ve had it for ages and it works really well.

Really sturdy and light.
Can you link this wodden notebook pad?
What specs did you get?
I got an email this morning from Gearbest telling me they couldn’t ship my i7/16GB Notebook Pro because of a “supplier issue”, they offered me an Air instead… So annoying.
I’m interested too!
Did you have a link for the hi-res wallpaper?
Wallpaper please? 🙂
Little offtopic, but can you share that wallpaper? It’s gorgeous!
try the EU stores and possible amazon spain?

Sorry, but the Alienware <-> MacBook comparison limps on every leg possible. Those are two very different computers for *very* different purposes.
Go to Lenovo and compare the X1 Carbon in all possible configurations to get a more realistic comparison and you’ll see they won’t differ too much. Hell, take a T480s and they’ll still be mostly equally expensive as the 13.3″ Apple Notebooks (FYI, currently thinking of switching to the T480s successor after 9 years on MacBook Pros, for reasons completely unrelated to hardware). You are comparing specs, but not what these PCs are intended for.
Just look at the size and weight of those Alienware Notebooks to get an idea what I’m talking about. Do you have one? Do you hear it right now?
What mouse are you using?
I just fucking wish they put one Thunderbolt 3 port on these suckers.
Most of the Mi notebooks with the 8th gen CPUs age great when it comes to power, design and battery life, but even with the MX150 that’s on some models, I’d like to use an eGPU and thus would need a Thunderbolt 3 port.
Mi Mix 2s FTW
I mean, you’re not wrong, xiaomi is crazy bang for the buck but what blows me away is how apple gets overrated so much that makes this possible.
Even yesterday I decided to go to apple website and, just for the lolz, see how high their laptop can go. Went, quite literally, over 9000. Exactly 9.045,69€ in my country, in fact. Same build done in the US apple website goes for $7149 which is far far cheaper, especially if I convert to €, but eh.
So I went to alienware (Dell), a PC gaming brand, famous for allowing customizable outrageous builds and being on the expensive side.
I created a build as similar as possible, always splurging on extras.
This is including:
– 5 year extended warranty with insurance for accidental damage + 2 years extended battery service for years 2 and 3 of system life (I may have missed it but I didn’t see anything like that on apple)
– OS licence windows 10 pro (you could also get it for apple but apple already includes osx)
– ms office 2019 pro (which you could also buy on the Mac but it’s not included in the Macs price)
– added about 530 extra for the extra software included in the mac (final cut and Logic pro x)
– didn’t have an option for 4Tb ssd so checked how much for a Samsung one and added to the price (which apparently you can’t on the latest Mac, think it’s a soldered chip)
– Nvidia GTX1080 8gb vs the Macs Radeon Vega 20 4gb
– 3840 x 2160 screen with gsync vs macs 2880×1800 both 15′
– RGB keyboard + better wifi card both available on option
– both are an Intel i9 with 32gb DDR 4.
I ended up around $6200.
Tldr: Alienware is about $1000 less, extra software, better screen, better graphics card and a TON more service (5yr warranty with accidental repair + 2y on battery).
It’s also super likely other brands would be far cheaper with enough research.
I’m sure there are a ton of other reasons to justify getting a Mac. A friend of mine got one simply because he likes how they look on the outside and that’s totally fine. It’s just not for me.
Could you elaborate on that ?
Gearbest, geekbuying, banggood or AliExpress.
I would do the same thing, but every time I own a Windows computer, it crashes and burns within two years. My MacBook Air is 5 years old and still going pretty strong.
WHERE DO I GET ONE?!?!? US WEST COAST
Ahh what the hell, I have the same laptop with the exact same desktop wallpaper.
I applaud your excellent taste.
One big thing stopping me from getting the xiaomi laptops is lack of support in my part of the world. We mostly get the more expensive xiaomi stuff via the gray market.
Thank you for sharing this. I’m considering upgrading and buying this laptop, though I’m a Manjaro user.
Sold my very old MacBook recently got the notebook pro also. All great so far. Nice desktop background. Do you have a link for it?
Welcome fam, I got the Mi band 3, Mi notebook air, Mi kettle, Mi air purifier and planning to grab the Mi Mix 3 when it goes global
With a unlocked tdp hack the i5-8250u in this laptop can easily beat most quad core i7s in other beefier laptops.
Nice to hear that! Enjoy your MIUI experience. (Cons of buying a mix3 before the eu release is im still tryna figure out how to get google assistant)
The proprietary Nvidia driver works fine for this machine, at least for those who plan to play games and don’t bother with gpu switching.
It is especially easy to install if you are on Ubuntu, all you need to do is turn off secure boot in the uefi settings, add the repository to software sources and grab the latest driver with apt, and it should be good to go.
Although it might require a boot to the safe mode and installing lightdm over gdm if the gdm can’t boot properly. (It didn’t for me on 18.04.)
How is the track pad compared to the MacBook? Does it have a pleasant heft like the steel body? What OS are you running?
Keep the money, you’ll need it to get a new laptop after any fucking update coming 😀
I was considering to buy one of these. But I need one for yesterday, and I can’t wait until arrives from China.
Have you had any issues with it so far? I hear horror stories every now and then of people getting this laptop and having issues.
Jesus Christ how much did you sell your macbook pro for? And how much is the mi laptop and the phone?
One amazing thing too is how great MacBook keep their value high through time, sold mine last year after 6 years for 60% of it’s initial value, not sure a Xiaomi will sell do well through time
Thanks!
Honestly, I didn’t know about the mix 3 launching in Europe but I think spending £270 on this mix 2s was a great deal. I haven’t got a single bad thing to say about it.
Ayy good choice.. Tho should price of the mix2s drop significantly after mix3’s EU launch?
I got it from Gearbest for £590, it was very good value considering the specs so I went with it hoping it looked as good as it does in the photos and I confirm it does. The build quality is great.
So boring. Was hopping for a GNU Linux with some kind of MIUI.
It came with a Chinese version of Windows 10 so I re-installed Windows with an installer USB and it activated fine and works great.
Which OS does the laptop came with?
You will not be disappointed with the laptop.
The fans aren’t too loud, I guess it depends on what you’re doing. Sometimes if the CPU spikes the fans ramp up high and quickly for a couple seconds which can be annoying sometimes. People have speculated that the fans curve with the frequency of the chip rather than temperature. When it does tasks, the fans are quiet. I have just played a couple games on Overwatch and it was a nice and quiet experience while temperatures were around 50C.
The i5 variant is what I have and it’s great! Normally in CPUs the i7 variants are a small to medium advantage to the i5. This is a quad core, 8 thread machine and it’s munching whatever I throw at it at the moment.
The photo I took doesn’t do the screen justice, I took the photo on my girlfriends iPhone 6. The screen is great, text is very easy to read. Brightness is average compared to my old MacBook but definitely no complaints.
I didn’t pay any import tax and I live in the UK. I ordered it from gear best.
Honestly there are so many nice additions to this laptop. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. 🙂
So I’m shortly about to buy the laptop but I have a few reservations .
Does the laptop have loud fans?
Is the i5 variant still fast?
Is the screen crisp from your photo I would say yes ?
And then it’s just import tax that I’m Likley to.pay getting it into the UK lol
Welcome to the gang
Just wanted to say I’m blown away by the value Xiaomi offers and to upgrade my laptop and buy a phone with money spare, all from an almost 4 year old MacBook is crazy.
Xiaomi definitely has a life long consumer, here.
