I don’t. I use my phone all the time, my wallet, not so much. So I keep my wallet in my backpack and phone in my pocket.

I went insofar to send my contactless card back to my bank because I rank security over convenience, and would never use either where I live.

If some dickhead who was unaware of “how” I magically just walzed into the local shop and paid with my expensive phone and they thought they could do the same, I’d probably end up with some lost teeth and no phone.

And, I understand some peeps are clumsy and lose their shit all the time but here’s my [old wallet](https://i.imgur.com/wP5RXBN.jpg) which has held many cards over the years.

    That’s good to know.
    Dear Xiaomi person:
Please stop making phones without headphone jacks. It’s dumb. A vast majority of you users want them. Don’t become like Apple where you take a patronising standpoint with your users. Keep making rad stuff, but also take the time to listen to what your users want.

Mobile payments, pairing headphones and other devices, NFC tags (I have one in a different room I have to go to to turn off my alarm for example) and it’s the best way of easily sharing a webpage or app or something with someone near you. That’s what I use it for. They’ll be more stuff too.

Not really unless you are into rubbing devices with other people to share a business card, which of course no Asian would ever be caught doing anyway.

Also license fees to the NFC forum, likely the more devices you produce with NFC the higher your license bill. Pricing structure doesn’t seem to be available to the public however.

I had a NFC phone in 2011, never used it for anything, so it’s very much hit and miss depending on country. Like China we also have an alternative payment platform based on phone numbers or QR codes.

    >But you still need a wallet, like you said. What’s the difference between a one card wallet and say, a 4 slot card holder with your ID, Bank card & CC. Bulk is also pretty much gone with any card holder, which is what I’ve gone with, 6 cards and a slot for a bill or two in the middle.

Because what’s the point? As I said, I have my phone why bother bringing more stuff I don’t need.

    >What about loyalty cards that don’t have apps? Costco in particular. You need your card to get in and they have forced me to not use contactless paying for anything over a certain amount too, made me insert the card.

I have a Nectar card and my Morrissons card both on the Android pay app and they’re the only loyalty cards I use. Don’t have a Costco membership at the moment myself bu whenever I’m going to Costco I know I’m going to Costco, don’t think I’d need to carry that around with me all the time.

    >Also here in Vancouver, Canada, I’ve run into quite a few stores (even my nearest 7-11 Downtown) with signs saying “No tap available”. What do you do then? Leave your goods and leave the store?

Here in the UK every shop has contactless terminals. Don’t know the last time I shopped somewhere that doesn’t.

Don’t understand why people here are literally arguing against a very cheap convenience. The whole main argument people seem to have against NFC payments here is “I’m used to the old worse way and i don’t want to change”.

    > If I’m going out drinking I’ll take a one card wallet with just my ID. Just gets rid of so much bulk.

But you still need a wallet, like you said. An ID card is a must, especially so if you are driving. What’s the difference between a one card wallet and say, a 4 slot card holder with your ID, Bank card & CC. This gets posted on r/android every few weeks/months. The same thing happens which happened here.

Parent comment asking some XYZ OEM for NFC and getting decent traction of voted and then getting replied comments which are equally upvoted talking about who the heck needs NFC and so on.

Fair enough. I guess me, both go in the pocket in the morning, and they’re usually also both there while queuing unless it’s in my hand if I had a long list saved there.

Getting my wallet and putting it in my pocket each morning and then having to take it out of my pocket and then take the card out is a fair bit more effort than taking my phone which is always with me and then is usually in my hand when I’m queuing anyway. If it isn’t then I only have to take it out of my pocket and touch it to the scanner, maybe touch the fingerprint scanner. It’s one less thing to forget, one less thing to lose and one less thing in your pocket. If you can use it it just doesn’t make sense not to and then once you do you won’t want to not.

Like, I get it and I want NFC too so I have one less thing to need to bring with me. But you’re still either pulling out a phone and tapping it, or pulling out a card and tapping it. And the card you don’t need to unlock/enter a pin first (under a certain amount)

Except that maybe, being this the Xiaomi sub, the replies here don’t necessarily represent the consumer market Xiaomi is targeting (people that don’t already own a Xiaomi)? After all, from the top 5 vendors listed by Xiaomi in the presentation, Samsung, Huawei and Nokia appear to disagree.

I believe they havent noticed the criticism about this post.
Stop bringing alot of devices with the exact same hardware and software out. The differency are meanwhile so small that there is no reason to buy a newer version.

Looking at the P20 Lite, that one also has a much inferior chipset for about the same price, compared to the A2. In the budget segment it really is a question of where to cut corners to reach a given price point.

In my honest opinion I don’t think NFC would make that big of a difference when it comes to overall commercial success of the phone, especially considering it’s in the budget segment. It’s also a a way to further differentiate their flagship lineup from their budget lineup. It’s just how it is.

If you need to carry around all that stuff yeah it’s not going to do you much good but most people don’t need that all the time.

Card payments can take a couple of days to appear in my account I prefer to just be able to look at how much I’ve spent on that particular night in the pub rather than waiting.

I have million other cards in my wallet, raging from European Health insurance card to Czech ID card and my driving licence. I still need those. Just one debit/paying card though.

But yeah, the aggregation of the bills and expenses is nice. That said my bank app does that too though, for all payments.

Oh right, forgot your wallet…sure. Well thankfully mine never leaves my pocket, as I have a business card, my contactless debit card, european health insurance card, Czech ID card, driving license card and a public transport card.

    For example Huawei P20 Lite 4GB/64GB is 288€ on [Amazon.es](https://Amazon.es), Xiaomi Mi A2 4GB/64GB is 275€

And there are way cheaper phones (with worse specs of course) like Huawei P8 Lite, Samsung J5 or Nokia 3.1, which all have NFC. The key is those phones aren’t specifically targeted at the Chinese market (unlike the Mi 6X, which is the hardware base of the Mi A2), where not including NFC isn’t as important as it is in Europe, so those manufacturers prefer to make price cuts in other components.

    I don’t think that’s an excuse when a [£250 phone](https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_l5_e610-4571.php) from 2012 had NFC.

So your phone works with all of them. That’s what makes it so great.

You will always need your phone no matter what you’re doing. You no longer need to take a wallet with all of your cards in it to go out. Most of the time I don’t take it out with me at all, there’s just no need. If I’m going out drinking I’ll take a one card wallet with just my ID. Just gets rid of so much bulk.

I’d really recommend you try Android Pay if it’s available for you.

Edit: forgot to mention you have the purchase information there immediately so you can see what you have spent on any particular day without waiting for the bank to get the information and update your online account.

I don’t think many phones in this price have these specs+dual cameras.

Contactless cards are univeral in my country(Czech Republic, country that the poster I was replying to also lives at) at this point and every shop has a contactless/nfc reader. Every new card is also contactless unless you specificaly choose so or disable it at your bank.

How different is tapping your wallet on the contactless reader different than tapping your phone?

I know it’s a cost reduction motivation, but similarly priced budget phones from Samsung, Huawei and Nokia (all these 3 brands, plus Apple, appeared on the slides about market share Xiaomi showed at the event) have NFC.

The Redmi Note 5 global version was released as Redmi Note 5 pro in India, if I’m not mistaken.

Very good SoC, powerful enought to handle everything in dayli use (except maxed out games, but thats not a problem for 80% of users), and power efficient still like all other brand new socs.

How do you pay when you forget your credit cards at home?

If your answer is “that never happens” or “that is very unlikely”, then let me tell you that I have never completely depleted my phone battery, not even once. Could it happen in the future? Yes, of course, the same way that you could forget your wallet at home.

Mobile payments, pairing headphones and other devices, NFC tags (I have one in a different room I have to go to to turn off my alarm for example) and it’s the best way of easily sharing a webpage or app or something with someone near you.

Quick payments when I don’t want to look for my wallet in my backpack and take the card out of it. Just take the phone out of the pocket, unlock and tap the payment terminal since those are ubiquitous, and more and more common in vending machines, self-service terminals and dispensers.

There’s also some high end BT headphones that perform quick pairing through NFC, and the whole stuff about writing NFC tags that some people use for amiibo spoofing. Some cities are also looking into migrating NFC transit cards to phone apps using NFC as well.
