Saving photos my deceased brother’s pocophone f1

— SOLVED — THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Hi there,

I have a very uncomfortable problem which I seem to can’t solve on my own due to my lack of knowledge in this field:
My brother deceased last sunday but did not backup the photos he took on his pocophone f1.
Since he died pretty young and there are lots of memories related to his photos we would like to access them somehow.

The problem is that I / we don’t know his 4-digit device pin. I can have an active internet connection if I enable WiFi on his phone.

What I tried already:
-I know the password to his google account and therefore tried unlocking it through google. Apparently you can only let it ring, hard reset or lock it – there seems to be no option to set a new password.

-I tried some combinations and then hit the “forgot code” button which showed up after the 5th try. The only option then was to perform a hard reset.

-I was not sure if I had an active internet connection when I hit “forgot password” after the 5th try. Therefore I entered an incorrect code for the 6th time in hope to see the button again. It didn’t show up.

-I asked all of his close friends but no one seems to know his code.

I’m afraid of using too many tries since I read there’s a possibility the phone will perform a hard reset after 10 incorrect attempts.

I don’t know if he enabled USB debugging but I guess he didn’t root his phone although I can’t tell for sure. I’m not very familiar with this kind of stuff.
I also thought about contacting xiaomi support, could that help in any way?

Is there anything else I can do to save the photos he took? I’m so afraid of destroying everything by accidentally performing a hard reset.
It feels so bad since I seem to have everything except for the 4-digit code.

I hope any of you can help me with this.

Sorry for your loss. Hope i can help you
If he had usb debugging enabled you could try and go into recovery mode and connect it to your pc and run the command adb pull /sdcard (if it runs it should make a full backup of the phone internal storage on your pc) try to do it in fastboot mode too cuz am not sure if stock recovery supports adb (you must have platform tools installed on your pc to execute this command if you don’t have it here’s a video on how to set it up https://youtu.be/cD6zsHQdoXY)

If he didn’t have it enabled you can try and manually enable it using adb but it’s gonna be hard here is link to get you start it tho https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/120394/can-i-enable-usb-debugging-using-adb/120441#120441

First of all, I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you find solace in these difficult times.

About the issue – I didn’t read all the comments as there were many. But as for unlocking the device with an unknown password, it would be helpful if it had an unlocked bootloader.

If you have an unlocked device, then you can install a custom recovery on your device, and you can reset your lock screen password using that. To do this, you need to Boot your device in recovery (TWRP or any other custom recovery). Then go to Advanced » File Manager » /data » /system and delete the following 5 files:

    • gatekeeper.password.key

    • gatekeeper.pattern.key

    • locksettings.db

    • locksettings.db-shm

    • locksettings.db-wal

After having done, reboot your device, now you can set up a new password. Unfortunately, if you haven’t, then every other method – by Mi or Google accounts – requires you to wipe your data. I would suggest you to enquire some more friends of his and see if they have any clue. Else, it would be better to check at a service center.

    Best regards.
    Take care.

I believe for the Xiaomi, it’ll either say “can’t recognise you” towards the bottom or throw a challenge asking you to input a pattern, pin whatever.

    Thanks for the advices man.

How can you find out if face detect is set up or not? Would it show a notification like “face not recognized”?

    Thanks man.
We can definitely proof that it was his legit phone so I’m really hoping xiaomi can help. I’ll contact them tomorrow and see if they can help me. Thanks again.

Thanks man. I just restarted his phone but I didn’t see anything like “unlocked”. It only said “Pocophone by xiaomi” and “powered by Android”.
I guess contacting Xiaomi would be a good next step.

That’s a great idea, there are 35 passwords. I’ll check them and hopefully there are some 4-digits in it.

Yep, there’s no adb.exe on any of his computers. So this won’t work.
Don’t worry you didn’t overstep. You are probably right that I’m using this as a distraction from his death – but I also think it would be easier for the whole family to see his happy moments.
Whatever … thanks a lot man.

Unfortunately it seems like everything is stored only locally. I also tried connecting it to my and his computer, but I can’t see any files.
I’ll try contacting Xiaomi tomorrow and hope for the best. Thanks man.

Yep, that’s a great hint – thanks. If I have option 1 or 2 I wouldn’t worry too much because then there’s no danger of data loss.
So I guess I’m trying to find out if there’ll be a warning or not. Does anyone here know this already?

Whenever you restart your Phone does it say “Unlocked”? It could help you alot by flashing up a custom recovery and go in and flash your own recovery to access USB Storage.

Otherwise go and try to contact https://twitter.com/atytse – he is basically the POCO branch manager. Which can you give an good advice.

PS: Tut mir echt leid, für deinen Verlust.

I think the pocofone uses a 2d face unlock system, meaning that it could be possible to trick it with a picture or video. Is one set up?

I remember going to android.com/find, logging in, and using the service option to set my own password. Then unlock the phone using that password. Dunno if it’s still a feature.

He doesn’t have knowledge and seems you don’t as well. Installing recovery means unlocking BL which means hard rest the phone. Suggest stuff only when you know it.. Which can be done by enabling the oem unlock which means by going to settings which again means unlocking the phone.
    Thanks..

if someone looses their phone, the inocent who finds it must bring it to a police station and connect the phone to a wifi connection so that the owner can locate it

So you’re saying that if you got your phone stolen you should allow the robbers to use it as their OWN with your OWN personal information? Sorry but no. Anyone shouldn’t be entitled to use anything stolen from the hard work of others. Thanks Godness there is an app that can block the phone when it gets connected to internet, making it unusable until the owner unlocks it. If you ain’t having it, anyone ain having it. Are you getting back your phone? No. Are these robbers going to be able to sell it? If blocked, No (IMPORTANT TIP!!!!!! write all your passwords irl and keep them in a place where your family knows, just in case it happens the same as op)

I searched online . I’d didn’t find anything but I am sure there is a way preserving photos what are precious to you.

If I found a way I will simply reply on my comment

Something i’ve found is people will use the 4 digit code for their phone unlock and the same code in email, passwords, bank pin, birthdays, last 4 social security digits.

Yes, sorry to say if adb.exe on windows is not there, its not likely to be viable

Ive been through part of this process when my step father died. He requested his computer destroyed when he died. My brother wanted to snoop. I had a talk with him. There may be things that should be private. I understand you are grieving right now. Dont focus too much on this right now, its likely you are using it subconsciously as a distraction. Sorry if I overstepped things here, but i wish you the best in difficult circumstances.

Hi, I’m sorry for your loss.

I just had a look on GSMArena and it turns out that Poco F1 has a microSDXC card slot.

Would you happen to know if he was using a MicroSD card? If so, maybe he stored his photos on it, so you should be able to easily access them using a card reader.

That’s a good idea. If the passwords happen to include numbers, those could be used in the PIN as well, so if any password contains a 4 digit sequence, it could in fact be the PIN as well.

Ok rlly sorry for ur loss but I believe u should keep the phone intact don’t try anything else just call a software technician (a expensive one but not too much so u don’t get scammed ) give him the phone and wait for him to crack it if not then I think u can detach the hardware and access it piece by piece but don’t try anything u dont know Abt and hope for the best. 🙂 I will pray for you.
Btw I think if u have Google photos u can still get photos of him in family picture but i can see why u want to unlock his phone
    Advice:-
write a msg stating that he passed to all his contact dont read his chats it’s unnecessary and a lil bad to do

Okay, thank you! Adb tools is not installed on his Laptop, so I guess that doesn’t work then, right? Sorry for being a little stupid but I never cared about rooting or stuff like that before.
I’ll check his Desktop PC later and see if adb tools is installed there.

    That seems reasonable.
I also know his phone PIN code which might be the same. But since i (maybe) have only 4 tries left I don’t want to try too much… If nothing else works I might come back to this and try some codes, but that’s my last resort. Maybe waiting for some nice future cracking tech might be a possibility, too.

Try going to passwords.google.com and see if he has any passwords saved that u don’t know about. I could be wrong but that url used to work for me when i forgot my passwords.

Unfortunately he didn’t use a SD card. I only found his SIM card in that slot.

Good to hear that there is a chance. If not now maybe it’s crackable in a few months or years …

Resetting is really the last thing i want to do. I’m still hoping we can find a note somewhere in his room, but it’s very hard to go to his room and check his stuff these days… Maybe time will heal the pain.

Try another Usb Cable, could be that your USB cable is charging only. Es kann sein, dass die Datenleitungen bei dem USBkabel nicht belegt sind, sodass dort kein Datenaustausch stattfindet. Trotzalledem muss du den Code wissen, um diese Option einzuschalten.

If it is authorised the adb tools will be installed, first step is “adb devices” to see if its recognised. Then adb shell to get a linux bash prompt to look around “adb pull” to get files off, backup is another to get everything.

Would the 4 digit PIN be the same as the pin for his sim card? If your can find the original box maybe it will have the details to the sim card pin or the carrier might be able to help?

Also you can check if he had installed any recovery, it’s easy to delete the password over recovery such as twrp recovery otherwise you will be forced to reset the phone which you will lose all the data. May be you could search how to recover data from a factory reset phone, there might be such tools. Don’t give ip though, let resetting be the last thing you do

Guessed you’d already tried it but if someone didn’t mention it you might never have tried. One other point I’m sure you’ve also tried is removing any memory cards and searching? That’s where I store my pics on my phone.

If you’ve access to his email, resetting his passwords via email and phone might help although might cause problems.

You might also ask on other subreddits beside this one if you haven’t already.

The data is there btw and crackable. Sorry for your loss btw.

There’s usually an option to change what the phone is doing while plugged in through USB. Did you see a menu that allows you to change from “Charge this Device” to “Transfer Files” or “Transfer Photos”? Possibly something like this at the bottom:

    https://i02.appmifile.com/149_bbs_en/19/06/2020/937feb0559.png

This changes how the computer will see the phone and what folders it can access.

I’m sure it’s a 4-digit code since it shows the number of digits which are needed as dots.

You can try boot in recovery and if it Shows TWRP you will be able to easily get all data back, i can give you further instructions if it works just message me. You can boot in recovery by shutting down the phone and then pressing volume up and power at the same time

we’re sorry for your loss, all media contents are encrypted which means they can never be accessed unless the the password is entered, so the only possible solution is to check google photos or mi cloud if he had used them, also try recovering his snapchat account if he had one cuz you may find some of the pictures. good luck man

USB debug requires authorizations now, only if you use a computer that was authorized will you get anywhere with that.

Go to photos.google.com logged into his account, its more or less automatic now to backup photos

In this case I would aim for patience. Keep the phone safe, go slowly code by code. There may be a list somewhere of common codes. Also, are you sure it’s a 4 digit? 6 digit? You don’t mention if you checked his Google photos backup…

You could just try plugging it into a PC, there may be a chance he’s given the permissions to access from a PC. From there it’s a simple case of finding the pictures folder.

If you know his Google password and he had Google photos with auto backup enabled, the photos are on photos.google.com
