Hello everyone!
I recently acquired a Xiaomi Redmi note 9 pro (9 pro max in some regions) for my grandma, and have been having a blast using it. We both are used to iPhone devices, and thus I’m not entirely sure on how to get the best out of this device. I’ve been trying to set it up so that she has the best user experience out of it, but I haven’t found any discussions online dedicated to this particular device.
So far I checked the wiki resources here for debloating and removing ads, but I remain somewhat reluctant to tinkering with the OS (Definitely planning on doing it though). I would really appreciate any user advice to exploit this phone’s potential, resources online that you guys may know, and overall any suggestions to ease her transition from iOS to this particular phone and improve the experience!
I apologize if this question is rather vague, but that’s really all I know about it and I’m pretty lost on where to start. Thank you all in advance \^\_\^
Thank you so much for your answer! I appreciate the effort and time a lot!
I did try posting over at r/Xiaomi, but their bot automatically removes posts from low karma users, and being quite silent in reddit, haven’t built much.
The MSA is not a setting, but an app itself. You can remove permissions to it, I believe in the security tab. I’m not entirely sure if it helps with adds though, as I’m not the user of the phone, but the consensus suggests it does indeed.
I have disabled “recommendations” from all stock apps and blocked permissions of most, so I’m assuming a big deal of adds should be removed.
I’ll fidget around a bit more next time I have a chance, and I’ll come back with more doubts! Thanks for your time again!
Do not get gcam. Miui camera is way better on pretty much any Mi device. Otherwise this is great.
Install Blokada to block most ads. It works like a charm. But you won’t find it on playstore
Why bother commenting an irrelevant and personal remark when at the end of the day it doesn’t answer or add to the discussion?
I’ll answer anyway, even when most of it was implicit in the post:
* I care about my grandma, and would like to make her experience enjoyable.
* She’s capable enough using the device to notice those small details, not enough to mess around with the OS
* I’m likely to purchase a mobile within the brand when I change mine
* I would, naturally, want to make the most out of my purchase (even if I’m not the end user)
* It’s fun to explore devices capabilities
* Because I can
The MIUI camera is good at recording videos, but not taking pictures. It oversharpens in some areas and makes it seem too bright.
GCam usually takes better pictures than the stock one, but in some cases yes the stock camera is fine
You can probably get more answers on r/Xiaomi, but I’ll give a few answers here.
The Redmi Note 9 Pro has a sister device that is almost the same phone called, Redmi Note 9S. Try replacing your search queries with that keyword and see if you get any more results.
Spend about 30 mins configuring everything in the settings–display, notifs // sound, accounts etc.. The most important decision in the settings though is about the ads, scroll to the bottom of the settings app and click on ‘Privacy’ *–>* ‘Ads’ *–>* “Opt out of Ads Personalization”. This won’t disable all ads, but will block a few. I also heard about disabling the setting called, ‘MSA’, but I haven’t been able to find that one.
For debloating and removing a majority of the ads, my #1 tip if you want to avoid messing with the OS. Replace the stock MIUI apps with 3rd party apps from the play store. Getting a different gallery *(google photos)*, camera *(gcam port)* and files *(google files)* are only the essentials. After you do that, block or disable permissions like storage access from the stock apps. If you get ADs appearing in app collections, tap into the collection then edit the name, there’ll be an option to disable / enable promoted apps. After doing this, you should be able to get rid of 99.9% ADs, I did this and haven’t seen an AD ever. Global ROM btw.
If you want to ease the transition from Apple to Android, download an IOS launcher from the playstore. I also personally wouldn’t tinker with the phone software like changing stuff deep down in the software guts, since you only need to do that if installing a custom ROM or other software stuff.
My device is the Redmi Note 9S btw if that makes any difference, the 9 Pro is basically just an upgraded version of the 9S. If you have any more questions don’t be afraid to ask
Could you change the ringtone for seperate sim cards??

Why mess with the OS when at the end of the day your grandma is going to use the phone
