Design..ehh arguable.. Redmi Note 5 or 6 wouldn’t bend like that. It’s been a while since Xiaomi phone bended so easily, reminds me of *shivers* Mi5
Plastic body, i told you guys, u didnt believe me!
You clearly never owned Mi5
I could see this bending in my pocket easily, considering sitting up and down movements is all it takes to make it like that.
yet Poco survived the bend test
Damn, I didn’t know they went for a plastic body ? Does anyone here owns one ? How does it feel in hand ?
Still surprised he does a bend test but not an impact test. Most phones that are damaged is because of dropping accidentally. I’d advise an impact test. If you were in a car or bike crash I’d prefer a bendy phone in my pocket rather than a rock solid one tbh!
No reason they needed to use plastic seems like Xiaomi are cutting back now
As much as I wanted the note 7 it’s nice to know i can just not now , my note 5 pro still works , the plastic back sucks
Mi5 owner here. It doesn’t matter because with the slippery glass back, i bought a hard case immediately after purcashing the phone.
I’m not sure how tight and skinny your pants are. But come on, there is no way you would put this much stress on the frame to bend it like Jerry did in the video.
Looks good enough for me. I handle my smartphone with care, like everyone should.
The extreme bending and extreme amount of pressure he puts it through will never happen in a normal everyday situation.
PS. Before someone says this can happen when it’s in your back pocket. Putting a phone in your back pocket is already stupid and sitting on a hard or angled surface with the phone under your ass is even more stupid.
it just have better internal build structure, they really skimped on rn7 though
Hard to do a drop test reliably. It all just depends on luck and where the phone will hit the ground first.
Well it doesn’t “just break”.
There’s a difference between just using your phone and performing a 3 point flexural strength pressure test.
See, that’s where the 200 lb gorilla meets the load. Not skookum enough.
Ex Mi5 owner here, never had a single build issue with that phone, more than a year I was carrying it in front pocket of jeans for most of the time, it did not bend. Some software issues and lacking of some common features made me ditch it tho…
To buy or not to buy.? I was planning to buy it once released in India, But now I am confused.
Wait, it’s been a problem? My Redmi Note 5 (Edit: It’s called the Redmi Note 5 Pro outside of China) was run over by a massive jeep on a trail and after I replaced the screen it’s been as good as ever.
Yeah, I always thought it was made of metal and even told everyone it was but last weekend I took mine apart to replace the screen and realized that the back was plastic. If I’m being honest it hasn’t felt as good as it used lol.
I’ve really want it for ages I love gradient stuff so much
My Redmi Note 3 (the one that Zack broke once in his videos) didn’t have any issues, it even felt once on a rock and did not have any damage…..
So IMHO durability tests are fun to watch but not that helpful if you use your phone without trashing it….
It’s a budget phone, I prefer having Xiaomi preserving the prince instead of focusing on having a phone solid as steel that could handle tons of damages….. most phones won’t ever have such damages if used normaly….
Just much cheaper to make
I use the same one. It’s bent at certain places like the volume rocker and the back casing is loose but I just pressed it back.
I’ll use it till I get either the S10 or Mi 9. Then it’ll be used exclusively as a GPS/music device.
Long live the Note 3.
Jerry lost his hair through so many surprises because of teardowns
Afaik the sd636 one is called Redmi note 5 pro only in India, and Redmi note 5 outside of India
Isnt that the whole point of the Redmi line up? Killer phone for an incredibly low price.
Of course there will be sacrifices
Those sacrifices were not made with the note 3/4/5/ a metal back should be standard in the redmi line, they’re cutting costs now.
Yeah it’s made of chinesium right around the parts that make it chooch. To be fair it is a very large gorilla
Glass is brittle on the back so not surprising. The front is interesting though, the way the corners angle in, it looks like the screen is well protected when the phone lands on its side
I think the note 7 is still great for its price and features .
Xiaomi ( as well as most chinese manufacturers ) strategy is to put the best features in the lowest price possible so, you can buy a chinese phone for 150$ and replace it after 1-2 years instead of buying a non-chinese smartphone with better build quality and more durability with 300$ or more with even the same features and replace it after 2-3 years.
This will make you be able to buy a cheap phone with good features and save more money theb replace it with a newer one with newer features after a year or more of usage with the saved or invested money of the year before and this can be better for many people than buying a more expensive phone and stick with it for a longer time and it would be outdated and slow but you can’t replace it as you don’t have money at that time.
At the end of the day, this is a very cheap phone under 150$ so don’t expect to have a 600 or 800$ build quality. You only need to take care of it very well and it can survive up to 3 or more years of good usage.
You can’t beat a metal chassis and backplate for durability
What? RN5 absolutely has metal back. Only the top and bottom parts (half inch tops) are made from plastic.
Not sure what the issue is. Front and back are glass, having plastic frame makes it waaay less crack prone when dropped. It also won’t bend with time (as almost all metal framed phones do) putting undue stress on glass that leads to breaking when dropped.
In a glass sandwich, plastic frame absolutely makes sense and is good engineering given budget constraints. Even metal-framed and well engineered (albeit much more expensive) phones use plastic as kind of a buffer to make the glass less prone to breaking.
All in all that’s a definite plus in my book – I was supposed to skip it due to glass back but I might try it anyway seeing that it’s plastic in the middle.
Plastic is good. Well engineered plastic is excellent. Fuck glass and fuck metal.
That’s what I always thought but from the inside it seems like plastic.
Oh, interesting.
Part of it was the fact that it was on dirt which could compact.
thing is …. they kinda “advertised” this one as the most durable redmi ever made ( The video of xiaomi employees jump onto it”
My redmi note 3 pro got bent at the sim card tray with normal use.
i would gladly take the aluminum unibody over this plastic body – glass back design tbh
Okay, sorry for your phone then :/
Oh okay, I haven’t heard about that one…
here are a few video of em kinda show off how durable their lastest Redmi is:

I couldnt find the jump one
I see, thanks for the links. They don’t seems to actually flex it like Zack did thought… 😅
Pity that Xiaomi didn’t do a bend test which is a better test of real world usage when people put their phones in their pockets and sit down with it. The watermelon and drop test(in a trash can?) look gimmicky as well.
But its **reasonably** durable which is the important thing and plastic keeps the weight and price down.
For me bend tests performed by hand are joke. You cant be sure how much force he used or is IT equal with what he did with other phones. Not to mention in what real life situation would you bend your phone with that amount of force.
Jesus was surface he was siting on hard and uneven. Cant imagine it happening on sofa or in car
So buy phone that is like this i want flashy cheap phone and im glad that i will find it in rn7
If u need power go for Paco but its is ugly in comparsion to rn7. Those bend test are a joke for me only concerning part is that it will get massive scratches on plastic corners every time u hit something with it
Just recently got a note 6 pro and its a fun device to have… Just can’t wait until i can unlock it and play with custom roms
I will still go for the RN7 and, as usual, just buy a decent and sturdy case along with it.
Where did you get your replacement screen? The front glass on my Redmi Note 5 got cracked from a drop. The LCD is undamaged and works fine.
Do you know where I can get a replacement for the front glass only, and one with quality just as good as the original glass it came with?
I’m not convinced on his bend test with his hands, would prefer a standardised weight, nothing to say he’s going soft on his favourites (or when he’s been unwell), or more grippy phones enable him to use more power.
I’d drop something onto it rather than dropping phone, more of an impact test on the screen (based on weight of phone so it’s fair?), which usually cracks?
So now that the specs are out I will get the Pro. And I’ve been going for a case with an included stand for a few generations and I love the added functionality. Plus, broken screens have never been a concern for me except the one time my phone got crushed by the tailgate. 🙁
