Well, it seems the K30 Pro is coming with an AMOLED panel after all. NotebookCheck are reporting that it is only a 60Hz AMOLED panel, which is unusual considering the K30 was 120Hz (albeit IPS) and 90Hz seems to be coming more commonplace in flagship-levels devices. I can see everyone being disappointed about this, even people who actually wanted an OLED panel. I just assume it was a cost-cutting measure since it is supposed to be the cheapest SD865 device, but I would still have expected a 90Hz AMOLED if they weren’t going to opt for a 120Hz IPS like the cheaper Redmi K30.

At this rate I wonder if we’ll ever see another decent flagship level device with an IPS display. Only the Asus Zenfone 6 exists in the form of an SD855 handset, but this is a little too expensive for me and is not easily available in the UK. I guess the choice for now is either to purchase an old flagship (notchless ones like Razer Phone 2 or Sony Xperia XZ2) or wait until MicroLED technology arrives in smartphones.

I don’t know, pop-ups along with all the others (flip, slide, etc) seemed to come and go. Probably not worth engineering all the moving parts when you can just punch a hole and pretend it’s the newest Samsung. I hope the simple pop-up stays around, but I think we’re gonna have to deal with holes for the next few years and I’m not seeing under display cameras coming any time soon. Likewise, the front camera getting out of my way where I can never see it is a huge plus. Sony interestingly enough kept a small notch on the Xperia 1 II, a headphone jack and front facing stereo speakers, which I think is wonderful. Just wish it didn’t cost and arm and a leg.

That’s an interesting point about the other phones that Xiaomi have with similar displays. I had forgotten about the Note 9 Pro and Pro Max since I crossed those off my list immediately. I really hate displays with obstructions like notches and punchholes, I think it’s a dumb trend when you could just have small bezel above the display (like the Galaxy S8/S9) to house the selfie camera and other sensors. For me, it would be especially annoying to have a selfie camera obstructing the screen since I have never taken a selfie in my entire life. Thankfully, over the next year we should start to see more and more phones moving to fullscreen displays and housing their selfies cameras in a pop-up mechanism instead.

At the latest we’ll found out on the 24th whether the phone has IPS or AMOLED. Hopefully some details will surface beforehand. If it turns out to be IPS then this will definately become my next phone! Should be a nice upgrade coming from a Snapdragon 820 with eMMC storage. But I don’t want to get myself too excited.

Well there are irregularities with LCD too, like backlight uniformity, but it looks like it’s less of a lottery than OLED. Generally it’s just unable to properly display grey shades at low brightness levels, [even at the top end](https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b0cele/s10_grey_uniformity_problems/) and I’ve not seen a case where someone’s unit was flawless.

Who knows maybe it will come with OLED because flagship, but seeing as the K30, Poco X2, Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max all come with the same size 1080p IPS screens (with different punch hole placements too, indicating possibility of not having any), I would be surprised if they don’t just end up using the same panel on yet another device to bring the manufacturing cost down for the SD865. I’d put my money on IPS personally.

Oh and I’ve not heard about the Zoom before. Seeing as the regular Pro is likely to omit a telephoto lens, that sounds really interesting.

Interesting to see that article you linked with the testing of the Realme X2 Pro. I am not sure what phone NotebookCheck tested it on, but I remember seeing that they showed two separate PWM frequencies both with and without DC dimming enabled. I really dislike how OLED panels have these irregularities between them. What I heard was that it’s different with every panel, and it just depends on various factors when it’s manufactured. Those irregularities can show up with DC dimming enabled especially when viewing content on plain dark backgrounds.

I hope you’re right about it being LCD and using the same panel as the K30, without the holes. Yeah, the K30 does have the PWM at around 2,400Hz but I think I should be OK with that as it’s quite a fast frequency. But I am worried because on the TechDroider YouTube channel they posted a spec-sheet from Weibo for both the K30 Pro and Pro Zoom models. It shows that both will have AMOLED panels. I am desperately hoping this information is incorrect, but at the same time, I have to be honest with myself that this is could likely end up being true.

What phone did they test that on? And differing quality is a problem with DC dimming, though I’m not sure it’s necessarily worse. [The X2 Pro](https://www.xda-developers.com/realme-x2-pro-xda-review/) almost seemed to have better uniformity with it enabled. But temperature looks way off, there’d have to be a separate display tests just for DC dimming to really tell.

And fair enough, it’s not always there on LCD screens, just the ones I checked always seemed to have it at some 2400Hz, particularly my Nokia 8, Zenfone 6 and the K30 below 17%, 58% and 43% brightness respectively. The K30 likely using the same panel we’re going to see on the Pro model, just without holes in it.

Oh for sure, it is unfortunate to have this problem. Well I haven’t actually tried DC dimming for myself, but I referred to the testing that NotebookCheck did where they found that the flickering still remained despite it being enabled. I imagine that the symptoms would be far less, but DC dimming also causes a deterioration in display quality so it wouldn’t be the best idea to purchase a phone with the full intention of running it entirely with DC dimming.

In regards to the LCD screens that use PWM, I am not sure as I haven’t tried them. Right now I have a Lenovo ZUK Z2 that does not have PWM at all. I know a lot of IPS phones that Xiaomi produce like the Poco F1 have PWM frequency of around 2,300Hz which is much faster than your typical 240Hz AMOLED. What I have heard is that the symptoms are reduced when the frequency is faster. So 2,300Hz may not even be noticeable for someone like myself. The only way to find out would be to purchase the phone and use it for a couple of weeks.

Man it must suck having an actual problem with PWM. I don’t recall having any issues with my Galaxy S3, just all the downsides make it not worth it for me.

And I assumed DC dimming did eliminate flicker completely, but in case it just keeps it at a higher frequency and it still affects you, wouldn’t most LCD screens still cause problems? Because they still usually use PWM for the backlight, just at higher frequencies.

I haven’t seen anywhere where it specifically states this phone with have an IPS. Personally I strongly hope it DOES have IPS because I am sick of the high-end SoC market being dominated by devices with AMOLED panels. Out of 66 phones released with the SD855 or 855+ there is only 1 device with an IPS display. You people looking for phones with AMOLED already have plenty of choice. Get the Redmi K20 Pro if you want the best value.

A lot of people like myself struggle with headaches and eyestrain in AMOLED panels as a result of the Pulse-Width Modulation method of screen dimming that causes flickering (typically at a frequency of 240Hz) especially when the screen is used a low brightness levels.

Look at all the people who complained about headaches when the iPhone X came out. It was the first iPhone with OLED and a lot of people realised their symptoms started after switching phones.

This is why some AMOLED phones now have the option for DC dimming, as it reduces the amount of flicker in the display for people who suffer from headaches and eyestrain, but it is not a solution because flickering still remains (albeit at a reduced frequency) and it causes a visual deterioration in the quality of the display.

Even without this problem, I still prefer IPS for mutliple reasons. The subpixel arrangement on OLED results in a clear loss of sharpness in comparison to OLED, especially on 1080p resolution panels. Typically out-of-box colours with IPS are more natural and not totally oversaturated. There are no issues with burn-in or screen deterioration over time. IPS panels are also cheaper to replace in the event of breakage. You also avoid a lot of the weird smudging that an AMOLED panel possesses whilst scrolling.

I don’t get the problem. It’s a choice. You are free to buy a phone with AMOLED. IPS / 60 Hz would be lame, but this way you can have more than 60 Hz for a good price if you don’t need AMOLED. If you do, you still have plenty of choice with other phones

But Xiaomi will not put LCD from Iphone but rather a 10 dollars cheap one from Aliexpress.

Not saying it’s a bad thing, they are selling budget phones after all, but in comparison Mi A3 720p Amoled screen just looks 10 times better than Poco’s or A1’s to me (full HD, LCD).

There is just huge difference between Retina and just standard shit LCD.

I would prefer an AMOLED Display with 60 hz over an LCD with 120 hz because, if you never used 120 hz in a Phone, you won’t miss anything and your Battery Life improves drastically with 60 hz over 120.

Sad! I’m using poco F1 and even though it is built cheaply I liked the thought went into it. I don’t like this rebranding trend.

120hz will IPS LCD will definitely kill the battery faster than an AMOLED 90hz white mode apps phone. It’s either gonna be on par with the K20 Pro battery or worse; a Super AMOLED on an SD 855 will definitely outperform an IPS 120hz SD 865 phone on battery life.

And I’m pretty sure the K20 Pro series has modifications to increase the Hz of the screen.

What year is it?! But to be fair the Poco is not a flagship.

More of a sidegrade because of the higher refresh rate.

Redmi k30= poco x2 and Redmi k30 pro= poco f2, this is the Indian branding afterall. I’m pretty sure they will market these two models as mi 10t and mi 10t pro on eu.

Hope they come out with a matte or any kind of black. Really dislike their coloring scheme.

Sadly, it’s IPS LCD. The K20 Pro is still the better choice imo.

I hope base model is 350Euros/Pounds … I could justify the purchase to myself then… I ll probably get the 128GB version though at 400… Or maybe the base model is 128GB at 400, who knows.

Personally idc about high refresh rate on a phone , but 90Hz Amoled is a decent compromise for luxury vs battery life. But 120Hz LCD like on poco X2? Never ever … I value battery life more than the refresh rate.

So, if the K30 Pro is the Poco F2… I’m guessing it won’t be the Mi10Tpro then?

    K20 Pro= Mi 9 T Pro.
    K30 Pro = Poco F2.

Why are xiaomi so weird with naming their devices??
