After getting the Android 10 update for the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite, and have it successfully install (thanks goodness), I discovered the bottom of my LCD screen had become damaged after the first boot that persists… https://i.imgur.com/t7VYDAG.jpg
Unfortunately it seems the LCD backlight is damaged now, and it was definitely not like this before the system upgrade as I CANNOT stand backlight issues, and would’ve seen this as it began if it were naturally occuring due to wear…
I have seen a few others with this issue on Mi Community support forums as well. Anyone here experiencing this, and is there any way to fix it/have Xiaomi pay attention to this?
Also, as a side note, after the upgrade to Android 10, the battery is stuck at 66% and has been for hours and hours… At least Android predicts over 2 days remaining with over 5½ hours SOT so far… **MUAHAHA I AM UNSTOPPABLE!**
EDITS BELOW (dates in DD/MM/YYYY):
**MORNING (10/03/2020, 09:36am), EDIT:** So I didn’t put the phone on the charger at all last night and the battery must’ve depleted as the phone was unresponsive… I put the phone on the charger and booted again. The percentage is still stuck, this time at 0% however it seems to be charging. I’ll leave it a while and check later.
**(10/03/2020, 11:42am) EDIT:** I have had to unplug the phone as it has become extraordinarily hot to the touch whilst on the charger… I have also shut down the phone to prevent damages.
**(10/03/2020, 03:19pm) EDIT:** Plugged the Mi A2 Lite into my computer, and via ADB and MiFlash, reflashed Android 9 V10.0.15.0.PDLMIXM. Device booted successfully to Android 9, however device began to get a bit warm, and behave abnormally. Battery meter still dysfunctional, and now stuck at 0%, and LCD still has backlight damage. Shut down phone once again.
**(10/03/2020, 07:51pm) EDIT:** Booted the phone up, upon usage the screen flickers bright and dim for no reason. Then freezes on a blank white screen for a few moments before going black, requiring me to force reboot. https://i.imgur.com/wlxTCRe.jpg . I may consider reflashing Android 10 V11.0.2.0.QDLMIXM to see what may occur.
**(10/03/2020, 10:49pm) EDIT:** Reflashed Android 10, system booted successfully… Screen flickering that existed in rolling back to Android 9 has ceased, however LCD Damage is a bit worse than before. Battery still reads 0%, WiFi Works, Mobile Works only when WiFi is connected, otherwise a signal is then lost. Auto rotate works even when toggled off. Over all system performance is very sluggish. https://imgur.com/ZuXf7vy.jpg
**(18/03/2020, 08:01pm) EDIT:** Due to the permanent damage done to my Mi A2 Lite, and it becoming increasingly unusable, I have had aquire another phone of differing brand, to replace this one. Unfortunately Xiaomi has dropped the ball big time this time around.
**(31/03/2020, 10:19am) EDIT:** I sent an email to Xiaomi, both to their Global and United States support. I was then replied to buy both saying that the United States did not sell the Mi A2 Lite, and I received the same from the global market. therefore they told me, they were unable to assist me in any way. this is kind of strange, considering the fact this was a global phone a, not a Chinese domestic market phone. Therefore the should correspond with global market, and/or the United States market. Due to this lack of help, I am trying to find ways to elevate this publicly so that my problem can be seen by Xiaomi, and a solution can be reached in a very timely fashion.
**(06/04/2020, 02:24pm) EDIT:** After chatting with Xiaomi online support, I was told I’d have to contact the seller on Amazon and see what they decide. Email, sent to Amazon seller same day.
**(27/04/2020, 06:56pm) EDIT:** Email response received from the Amazon seller. As the phone was purchased over a year from today (date above), they are unable to accept returns, and provide refunds. They recommended me to simply recycle the phone, and buy a new model instead. Due to this, I am now permanently stuck with a device that Xiaomi single handedly ruined, with their own negligence. I will call whenever I feel it is appropriate to, and speak to a live representative, and hope they may be able to help.
**(07/06/2020, 02:45am) EDIT:** The device continues to deteriorate, there seems to be a software update however my device cannot install it, and I am not sure how to install it. AccuBattery reports poor battery life, only 21% of it’s original capacity remaining on the battery itself, with the battery dropping from 70% to 20% in under 5 minutes… estimated consumption with screen on is about 319%/hr. Status bar and settings battery information continues to show 0%. Screen of device looks about the same as day 1 of the update. Battery cannot be safely charged to 100% (according to AccuBattery) as the phone gets extremely hot. According to the aforementioned app, the battery reaches 48°C near 80%, with the voltage approximately at 5100mV when using a standard 5V 2A non-fast charger. Phone seems to run okay with the screen off, I can record the FM Radio for up to 46 hours on a battery charge without it acting abnormally. This phone’s only purpose now, is to record various FM Radio stations, from NPR/Talk to Pop.
Similar problem for me. I always updated android and never had problems with my mi a2 lite (global version). Since last update (few days ago) though, lcd start to respond randomly. I noticed some strange deterioration signs on the border. Amazon provided refund, after 18 months from purchase (I’m in Italy). I was quite happy with the phone until now, but I don’t think I would buy antother one from xiaomi, if they destroy their own cellphones with updates… Who has suggestions for a similar model, different brand?
I’m not sure if I want to go to the trouble yet or not… I most likely will just charge the battery to 50% (by looking at the voltage, roughly), shut it down and stick it in the drawer, to be forgotten for a while. Maybe I’ll stumble across it again in the far future.
However, I’m giving Xiaomi a fair chance here to push a fixed updated to the phones already running Android 10/Q (not just to the phones running Android 9). If they don’t, then I’ll forget about this device and buy something else… or just stick with my Huawei GR5.
You might be able to get LineageOS running on it ?
Regretfully, I don’t think a petition will assist Xiaomi in seeing what they’ve done wrong. In China, petitions aren’t exactly welcomed, unlike here in America, they can be used as tools to help people see fault in something.
I appreciate your efforts though all in all. 🙂
I have created a petition for this very dismal events for our Mi A2 Lite, please sign here:

Thanks!
It really seems to be the budget phones that are the most affected. I emailed xiaomi, both the United States and Global emails, and I was told that the Mi A2 Lite was not sold by either the United States market, or the global market. Therefore they could not assist me in any way, however they did recommend that I tried to factory reset the phone, which did not work.
also experienced LCD damage. I’m never gonna buy China phones anymore. these guys can’t be trusted.
I just noticed it and I’ll see if the warranty covers it.
I’ve been using black mode since the update and I have blacked out everything.
And now that I have seen it I can’t unsee it.
I hope the warranty covers it .
Have the same issue
Will see if my warranty covers it
Hehe, “fix”.
try to restart the phone for 3 seconds screen looks perfect
Because they don’t test the source code. They just put instructions for the models they will receive and release the update. It was predictable that this type of problem would come with the update to Android 10, since other phones of the android one program also had problems when updating.
It seems to be, however I believe if something wet wrong just right, such as in my case, the backlight suffered permanent damage as well… Unfortunately I believe mine did.
There’s only a handful of notifications I am interested in, everything else feels spammy so I blocked it lol… Not sure what alerting is so I can’t say anything about that
even here even my programmer friends were surprised
really is software
http://imgur.com/gallery/y4uHRiT
I currently have a Mi A2 but I didn’t upgrade (emulation support, waiting for news of it)
So, the best way to tackle this problem is to never upgrade
Can you take a picture of your device on Android 9? I have had the same issue on my screen (Android 10) and after rolled back to Android 9 everything is back to normal.
I pray and hope so since this only my phone for work & daily life. Xiomi turn from great phone to the worst ive been since using them for years.
Yes, I had this problem on Android 9. Right now I’m using Aimp
Hmm… to each his own 😉
I think it’s a software thing… If you try to shutdown the phone… And boot it up again. The android one logo shows up with none of those 5 dark spots, and after 5 seconds the screen dims quite a bit and then the spots will show throughout the OS.. It’s just bad coding I hope. Xiaomi messed up with this update, let’s wait for the march patch, and hope they will release a much stable version of android 10.
I haven’t recommended the brand since then to anyone. My work mate since got a mi 9t pro but I didn’t nudge him toward it (even though it’s a great phone).
Mine is seemingly capable of charging, however the battery indicator doesn’t read anymore.
After reverting to Android 9, my phone’s screen began flickering bright and dim, before freezing up, then going black.
I may try re-applying the Android 10 update to see if there’s any improvement at all.
That’s a good idea. Might I recommend to you Nokia, or even Google’s Pixel (though those are much more expensive).
I’m seeing this as permanent, rolling back to Android 9 doesn’t fix this issue at all. It seems to permanently damaged the LCD and Backlight in some way. Even with rolling back to Android 9, the issue persists.
Cheers to you! 🙂
Cheers mate
Hooray! Let’s hope the backlight problems will be a thing of the past for your device, and that everything is well from now onwards. 🙂
So I had some problems with my microphone while trying to do a videochat and the device suggested I restart my phone..took me a while to muster up the courage for that..but I’ve just restated and the weird lighting has disappeared
As was I
Well I am extremely surprised
I rolled back just earlier. The battery issues and the damaged backlight seem to be permanent unfortunately… The damage has been done.
Did you actually roll back the device you posted? If so, are the lights back to normal?
If at all possible, please save your device while you still can, by rolling back. I used MiFlash to revert however I’m sure there other more friendly ways of doing it…
I know quite a bit about electronic and wiring of them. So I believe I am not wrong. I have rolled back the software to Android 9 and the damage still persists. It is indeed and everso regretfully, permanent.
I really don’t think you know what you’re talking about. Roll back to an old firmware.
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
I updated my device 24 hours ago and I noticed the same backlight issues earlier today but didn’t pay too much attention to it until I saw an article with your pictures in them..this is particularly worrisome and I’m considering rolling back if that’s possible, as it looks like it’s a downward spiral of problems from here on
No, it doesn’t. But dirty flash works good.
It must be a software controller that’s doing something wrong to the backlight. Ceasing usage of your phone would be recommended unless your rollback back to Android 9 again.
I corrected that, thank you 🙂
Paid
When booting, on my phone the 5 dots only appear after 5 seconds on the white Android One splash screen, indicating no hardware fault.
I’m on 11.0.6. No problems, thankfully. Maybe go to the store?

After upgrading it to android 10 , my phone was now stucked in android one then going to black screen until my phone get low battery . Is there any possible solution for this issue ? If there is , please help me .
I’m experiencing the same lcd backlight issue too but it’s a bit less visible in comparison to the picture posted… And just to add something, now my device doesn’t charge up with ITS OWN CHARGER. Seems incredible but I had to switch to my tablet charger (which has the 9V 2A mode) to charge it up.
The Mi 9 and Mi 9 Lite weren’t available at the time. The Mi 9T was, but honestly, I’m not a fan of popup cameras. The thought of Android One was also appealing, but well, look how that turned out. In any case, I’m fairly well satisfied with what I got. A better screen would be nice, of course, but the Note 7 Pro’s screen isn’t bad. Maybe I’ll get another phone in the future, one that’s AMOLED, but I think I’ll keep this one for a bit. I mean, I already bought it, might as well use it.
you should consider yourself lucky… next ”upgrade” will be permanent bootloop.
ps i bought xiaomi also and i am extremly unhappy. never again.
edit
i just read you edited post about phone getting extremly hot. so they plan to ”upgrade” your house also!? how nice of them… looks like some evil mastermind is behind all these updates.
i ll repeat. NEVER AGAIN I WILL BUY XIAOMI.
actually everyone should say that every day before going to sleep and first thing in the morning.
Yes, it’s fully responsive.
The touchscreen is ok on that part?
Hope so
You could get a Mi 9 Lite or a Mi 9T
The issue hasn’t anything to do with the pixels, it’s a blacklight issue.
Does it have OTA?
Yikes! I’m glad I didn’t see the update appear on my phone cause I would have updated to it. Sucks that this happened.
Probably not the best place to ask but question for anyone on Android 9 (same phone as OP) getting Google Play Music downloading notifications? They pop up for a few seconds and disappear randomly throughout the day. Was hoping that this or whatever the next update for this phone is would fix/stop the notifications.
Thank you, I hope so too.
Hope you get it fixed
Right now I’m on Havoc 3.2. Actually this is the only ROM I tried on this phone, but it’s stable and the UI is nicer than stock.
I’m sure there’s no coming back when a pixel fries. And it is the case with this phone.
It’s possible, especially if the LEDs are in series as the voltage decreases for each LED in use, so the LEDs at the bottom would be dimmer if they’re near the end of the circuit. However if they’re in parallel, that might not be the case as all the LEDs would be dimmer, since the total voltage would be lower.
Firmware issue, roll back to old firmware and display will work again.
What about it not enough voltage is supplied, could that cause this issue?
I wouldn’t be surprised, really… Truly disheartening.
I’ll check that out, thanks! Hopefully I can but seeing as how my device is old now, and out of it’s warranty, they most likely won’t do anything about it.
Amazon sometimes instead of repairing just refounds, you can try talk in the live chat and see what they tell you (if you bought it from Amazon)
Pretty much… I wish to be compensated in some way from this if they don’t/cannot fix this. It ruined a good phone I paid good money for.
(Fixed typo)
It’s possible the kernel was told to allow too much voltage to go to the backlight, this damaging it. (I believe the kernel also controls CPU voltages, and many many other things)
It’s also possible from what I have read from other users here, that they developed the update for one LCD screen and the A2 Lite has two different LCD screens in various phones. It’s possible they made the update for one screen manufacturer and not the other, thus damaging it.
Unfortunately it was purchased too long ago for that now… Good idea though for those who’s devices are newer! 🙂
I heard of people contacting amazon and they refound the phone immediately, you can try this
Sorry, but how do you know this is permanent? How could a software update physically damage the screen?
Ohhhh okay, thanks. Sorry for your phone man…
This is true, I’m very grateful my phone actually booted and and still an after being shut down.
I just wish the backlight wasn’t ruined because of it. 🙁
Well, I wouldn’t say you are lucky but I saw many problems with this update and a lot of people have their phone stuck after the android one logo when booting up after the update
Unfortunately, I don’t have a warranty anymore. It passed on the 28th of January.
No, the update has now been revoked my Xiaomi, so the update is no longer available.
I know, haha. But I really like Miui’s UI and some of it’s features such as the call recording or the ability to hide the notch + everything else you can do with CustoMiuizer.
Also, it has a great battery management, wich is always nice.
The good thing is that I can always go back to Android One whenever I get tired of Miui, which is one of the reasons I love this phone (over the Redmi 6 Pro that I also own lol)
Which ROM are you using?
Omg. Rip my main phone.
If too much voltage is supplied, then the backlights that were damaged are toast
Fastboot is a black screen, so the damage cannot be seen very well… There just very very light unevenness to the backlight.
Same happened to my htc one m8 after 6 years. It looks like an amoled burn that’s whiter than the other pixels and it occured after I flashed android 10 into it.
Oof that hurts. He might have warranty tho
:p
Lol, the sole reason of using a slightly more costly (Because they don’t get MIUI’s ad and whatnot revenue) “A” device. It’s basically the be the one thing you sought to destroy meme!
Why did you do it? 😛
The crack is in the glass screen protector due to it being cheap and the edge chipping away. The actual phone glass is in perfect condition. I just haven’t bought a new protector to replace the existing one. It suffered no falls.
(PS: you have really good eyes to be able to see that in the first pic)
So is this gonna be a permanent problem to the screen?
I’m not defending Xiaomi? I said that A3’s display is not Android One fault. Android One is very good project supported well by Nokia or even Motorola. Xiaomi gives a fuck – agree with it but don’t expect too much if u pay cheap phone. That’s why support team tells lies everytime u question them. Cheap phones = cheap support. That’s all.
If u want pure Android experience and fast updates buy Google Pixel.
Which version are you on?
You also have a crack on the bottom left. No amount of software will fit that.
Custom ROMs are the answer. I own a Mi A2 and since Xiaomi 6X has the same hardware we can use MIUI too.
Actually it happened when the Mi A2 updated to Android 9 and Xiaomi never issued a statement. Xiaomi should be called “ShameMi”. It’s shameful of them to put out awful updates all the time.
Man, looking at this now, I’m glad I ended up with a Redmi Note 7 Pro instead of an Android One device like I originally wanted. Hooray for lack of availability, I guess. Pity, as I really wanted a phone with an AMOLED screen, and was planning to eventually get an Mi A series. 🙁
> 720p is not disadvantage of Android One.
Android One isn’t the problem – it’s Xiaomi not wanting to have competing Android One devices in the midrange section..
>Stop complain and spend more money.
So which device is there except for the A3? None.
I have the mi9lite which should have been the A3 in the first place. The current A3 should have been the A3 Lite imho. That would have been good practice.
720p is not disadvantage of Android One. Don’t require best specs from cheap phone. I have Mi A3 and i can’t see difference between Mi A3 720p and Mi A2 Lite 1080p.
Stop complain and spend more money.
its almost like they didnt get any ads profit so they said f\*ck it and let the Android One ship sink
The alerting and silent split notifications are a godsend. I could never go back.
Weird that Xiaomi’s MIUI’s Android 10 aren’t shit at all, but the Android One’s Android 10 is just a train of problem.
that’s the secret plan they have for the A Series. Get people to flash MIUI!
>lately
720p in the A3 started it
So I didn’t install the update because I saw all of the problems, so I went back to check the OTA and it’s back to saying “your system is up to date”. They must have realised that it’s buggy!
It’s not damage.
Do you get the same issue in fastboot?
I don’t see how this is physically possible. Most likely a back light issue in the kernel.
Yup! Ported roms from Redmi 6 Pro, the chinese version of the Mi A2 Lite.
I’ve been using RevolutionOS for like 2 months and everything works great… except for the ol’ Miui’s not-so-great ram management.
MIUI!? On a Mi A device?
So updating is not an option for now huh?
I just check my phone for new update of android 10 after this mess and the update is off/gone for now.
This is unprecedence. Never happened before this widely. I think they will make a statement. They better do since they bricked the phones
I had the exact same issue when I updated, and it was the reason I went back to 10.0.17 as it scared the crap out of me.
The problem disappeared for me as soon as I downgraded. Now I’m using Miui, and the problem is still gone.
I was tempted to upgrade my A2 a few days ago, but after seeing the emulator I use would slow down, I decided not to. And then the next day, alot of people having problems with it now
Like damn. Majority of the Xiaomi users who upgraded to 10 got shitted on
Did they ever officially address the update that bricked some phone (may have been the A1 or A2)?
Edit: phones not phone.
Honestly the more I think about it the more I feel like skipping Android 10 all together… Dark mode is the only feature I’m interested in anyways and it can be achieved in other ways, so I’ll probably stick with my trusty old Pie
Im using MI A2, and after the last update, my UI keeps crashing here and there.. Reported to Xiaomi via its Feedback section, but till now nothing.. I like MIA2 however because it has a better EIS than RN8Pro, and other Xiaomi models to date.
Lazy developers bro, they tested this update only on One(1)type screen/touchscreens.
Omg same as me after that update few hours ago.
Wow this isn’t reassuring at all
Xiaomi’s Android One had been a shit show lately, lol
No Official statement from Xiaomi about this mess?
The update is already 24hrs old.
So, if u are with “csot” screen don’t update.
Looks like a bug in the kernel or something sent too much voltage to the backlight and fried it
Thank you for your assistance. I appreciate your support 🙂
I tried rebooting and it doesn’t help unfortunately… It seems to be permanent.
Now that’s messed up. Pretty weird, but when I saw that weird problem on my RN7, I used to just reboot the phone and it would work. Don’t know what’s happening there. Sorry for not being able to help, but I gave it an upvote for visibility
