So I tried to clean my xiaomi notebook pro and reapplied thermal paste because it was getting hot and also my right fan was making a rattling noise. But after that the fan started rattling even more. So I screwed it open and assembled it once more. However after that the fan isn’t working at all anymore. It seems like the fan is power on for a very short bit and then stops again. Does anyone know how I can fix this or should I get a new fan. Thanks in advance!

When the notebook is fully powered down, try very gently just rotating the fan around a few turns with your finger. Just to ensure the fan isn’t getting hung up on something. It’s hard to start fans under their own torque sometimes, so it a tiny clod of lubricant might be making it get stuck.

Here’s the documentary that taught me that, it’s quite interesting! https://youtu.be/hQ3GW7lVBWY

Yo I had the same problem, the fan was’t lubed up enough and the initial lubrication used didn’t actually do it so it kept grinding and then stopping like yours. I then used some general low quality machinery oil (after purchasing more expensive lithium grease) it it has been good ever since.

WD40 is more a cleaner and would help if it is the lube causing the friction. You would still need to grease it up again.

Nah the fans should spin equally. Also after playing a game or something the fan doesn’t spin fully. Thanks for the comment however.

It’s not that the fan is touching anything but there seems to be a little bit more friction.

The fan on my HP envy started rattling about a year ago. Took it apart, cleaned from dust, dropped a tiny bit of bicycle chain oil on the spindle, while ordering a new fan on ebay. That new fan still sits on the shelf since it arrived. No need.

” The video shows some friction in the fan. Look, he kind of shoots back when he stops. You have probably used the wrong / too much lubricant. Try to do it again. First clean completely with alcohol and a (tooth) brush. Then re-grease with a very small amount of good quality silicone lubricant.”

With minor modification you can install metal fans from GTX version (purchase on Aliexpress). They are a littlle bit louder, but this move completely solves rattling noise problem.

    It is, indeed.
The original WD-40 is a penetrating oil, which means it is low viscosity. If you don’t believe me, take a look at its ingredients: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD-40](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD-40)

Now, I am not saying it should or shouldn’t be used to lubricate the fan bearing.

if your fan doesn’t move well AFTER lubrication, that simply means that the oil which you used was TOO VISCOUS. Try to remove the oil as much as possible.
Use very light machine oil, drip from one side, and absorb with tissue paper on the other side of the bearings. This will help remove the previous viscous oil. Do not soak the bearing with oil. These type of fan bearings usually DO NOT need any lubrication.
Do not use WD-40 as this type of oil creeps very well, so well that it will break metal-plastic mouldings.

EDIT: i just read you used silicone based oil. This “oil” will become grease after the solvent has dried. This is because silicone “oil” is actually silicone grease particles suspended in solvent. Once the solvent evaporates, the silicone will solidify and that is why your fan couldn’t move. Silicones are very difficult to remove, because they are very resistant. I am not very sure but maybe you can try naphtha, or lighter fluid. It’s cheap and should be safe for most plastic parts. Drip on one side, and absorb from the other side. Please do some research first. Good luck
