My Redmi Note 11 is “end of line” now

Hi. That means no security updates anymore from Xiaomi

But everything works like a charm.

My question : Do you think I can decide to continue using it as long as it works fine, and in spite of the absence of the OS updates, as long as apps do also work and are updated? Or should I be concerned and think about changing the ROM, or about buying a new phone and keeping this one as an emergency device? (I actually own another Redmi Note 11 as an emergency phone).

My preference : Continuing using it as long as possible.

I have a security suite and a VPN installed on it.

For me the RN11 is a fantastic phone, inexpensive and efficient. In my view it must have been sponsored by China and not sold a normal price, but much less, and I don’t think we will find such a bargain anymore.

The only problem I see is the relatively short period for the OS updates.

EoL is really “end of life” and to answer your qn, just cus the rn11 is no longer supported by xiaomi doesn’t stop it from being a fantastic, inexpensive and efficient phone. you may stop getting newer features through the now missing OS updates, but let’s face it, they’re prolly gon be in the “AI” domain anyways. so EoL shouldn’t really affect you for a good couple years.
now, in case you want a fresh coat of paint, you can always just flash a custom rom on it and voilà, it should serve you for a good many more years; just keep in mind that google is kinda making life difficult for custom rom users with them going crazy over device integrity checks (there are solutions of course, just know that they take a bit of effort once in a while, and some people may not want to be bothered with it, which is when one buys a new device)

Thank you. very interesting. The level of danger is not really a concern in your view, and I ll be probably able to continue using my loved phone for some time. An excellent tool. I was thinking about changing the ROM but if I can avoid it I won’t. My brain is already busy with some other things. Days are only 24 hours long, I prefer to try to simply my life on this question.

By the way : My super desktop PC, only 7 years old, is disqualified by Microsoft for a Windows 11 upgrade, like 240 millions other computers on earth, it seems. By mid October the Windows 10 updates will stop. After some hesitations I decided to keep my motherboard and CPU, and to switch to Linux about one month ago. I think I took the good decision.

My PC works wonderfully. I’m learning and practicing Linux (Ubuntu), and very happy of it. Throwing away excellent hardware is completely non sense! I actually did order a new MOBO and CPU at first, but after three days I decided to cancel the order and to go for Linux. Voila.

When you see the amounts of money we spend on all this stuff it’s quite amazing. It’s more clever to make last all this tools. Linux can absolutely do the job very well. (I’m not a gamer)

I wouldn’t say that everyone can switch to Linux, just as not everyone feel comfortable to root their phone. It’s easier if you have a certain background, a certain experience with computers. I’m not completely new to Linux and the command line but a few years ago I didn’t see myself switching completely to Linux. This time I do.

Thank you so much. It’s a relief.

Did you use all the apps without any fears? Including your bank app for example?

It was absolutely fine. As long as you don’t use shady stuff, you’re fine. I’ve actually handed down the phone and it’s still in use.

Vpn don’t protect you from attacks. You don’t need anti virus software on your phone as long as don’t install anything from unknown source and you are fine. Phones that don’t receive any security don’t magically get hacked. Most of the time your only concern is banking apps won’t work in the future if your phone android version is too old
