My custom ROM switching experience.

WARNING: Longpost

So… I need some introduction to this story, maybe..?

Previous year i bought Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T. I used it frequently and i was thinking that the stock rom was nice (but there were some issues that made me do that like google casting and other things i missed from my older phone.). And the update to MIUI 12 brought me to a place named “ROM hell”. The system was lagging as heck and the battery literally was holding near half of a day. This was a really bad experience i had. After that i decided to flash a custom ROM…

The bootloader unlock timer was ticking and finally i said to myself that it’s worth it to flash a rom.

And my first ROM was Pixel Experience+ with android 10. I chosen this ROM because it is popular among beginners in custom ROMs. It was buttery smooth and really rock-solid stable. The google pay was working out of the box because this device passed safetynet basic integrity and CTS profile. Battery was holding 1-2 days. It was a really great experience for me.

The next ROM was evolution x, i didn’t use it very much, because my only main target was android 11. The rom was a little bit more slow and glitchy. It was still usable tho. (Holds battery near a day or so).

After evolution x, i tried Pixel plus UI because of cool screenshots i saw (why did i do that???). The ROM had no OTA updates, has no GPay and other stuff. The only thing that kept me near a half of a year on it was a good performance and battery (holds near a day). It has ui displaying glitches and other stuff that associates this rom with instability. I tried fixing GPay with some workarounds in Magisk and it worked. This was my greatest jump in custom ROM understanding, because i started using root tweaks frequently (like Substratum, Root Booster, Greenify). But bugs had me to switch to another custom rom.

And… I flashed… Resurrection Remix OS. I have no words about it. I just fixed everything with Magisk modules and root tweaks. It’s customizable, yeah, but something kept me away from it. This thing was bad battery life. It was literally bad that i used this custom rom for nearly 2 weeks. I know, the rom isn’t bad at all and the battery life depends on how maintainer optimized it. But, really, I don’t want my phone to hold half of a day just for customization.

My next desicion was to flash Droid On Time OS. Nothing special, i just tweaked it as i like. The ui was some sort of new Google “material you” brewed with a normal material design and MIUI. I used this rom nearly a day!!! To find out that it’s enough of jumping from one ROM to another.

And my last and totally last desicion was to flash MIUI back, but my brain told me to flash Xiaomi.EU, and i did that.
This was such a great feeling, like i came back home like a hero from a big adventure with some fancy swords (like magisk) and other useful things.
There are many features that i missed for a long time on custom roms. The customization with themes… This feels like heaven to customise phone without rebooting and other things. New fixed and finally stable updates of MIUI made phone less laggy and less battery consuming (practically holds a day). There is no ads and spyware in this ROM and it has GPay working out of the box. The only bad thing there is the Chinese content (like themes) because this ROM is based on a Chinese MIUI. I am not planning to switch now, only tweak it to perfection. I am using this ROM for a 2nd day and it’s really polished. Many tweaks that i used are working there. I like it.

So… Why i flaired this post as discussion? Because i would like to listen to your opinions about MIUI and custom ROMs. Their functionality, speed, battery consumption. Your advice for beginners, your (rom, recovery, kernel) recommendations and other things you like to share with people who don’t know how to flash ROMs. Tell your stories about flashing custom ROMs! This is a good experience in learning android! And i would love to see some interesting situations! Maybe there is some sort of a funny failure? Let’s laugh at it! Maybe you like to say how you like one specific rom? We will hear your feedback and maybe try your rom on ourselves!

Thanks for reading this big post! This was my first chance to tell everything about flashing experience on a public! If there were any grammatical mistakes, then sorry, i am not a native English speaker. Anyways, goodbye and “swipe to flash”!

I flashed Arrow, but photos quality was that bad and I couldn’t use portrait and ultrawide lens, so I was forced to flash MIUI 12.5, which is much better and smoother than 12. It’s still not like AOSP ROMs but good improvement.

“i have 0 clue why everyone hates miui”. I’m scrolling on reddit for about 10 mn,or using browser, i recieve a message on messenger, i open it to replay quickly, when i come back to reddit or any other app miui was already killed it, so the app charge a new session. I just want to throw my phone. Other times l don’t recieve any notifications from messenger (without any battery optimisations). And there is many other bugs, I’m not a heavy user.

Do you use gcam for custom Rom? I recently flashed PE, and found that gcam is more useful than my original camera (BTW, my phone is the same as yours).

Mine started when I noticed that MIUI frequently kills the apps running in the background. Most said turning off app optimization and MIUI Optimization is the way to go (but it’s cumbersome, I had to select every app in which I have to actively choose what needs to go and not. Plus disabling the optimizations thing makes MIUI ugly, floating window doesn’t work and some options get replaced by the stock android.

So I thought to myself, why not just use custom rom since my device (Redmi 9T) has a lot of it anyway. I first used A11 release of [Xiaomi.eu](https://Xiaomi.eu), I checked it out if it’s any good and I found a lot of bugs in it, I didn’t mind it too much since it was only for preinstallment of any custom rom anyway. After that I tried DOT OS since it’s the smallest (I had to download the smallest rom with gapps support because my internet here in PH is verrrry slow, it was already night at that time when I decided to finally do it). I didn’t liked DOTOS as well because of the status bar being too wide.

In the morning that next day I flashed Evo X because my fellow xda members said it was the best rom. I didn’t liked it, the battery was simply halved and there is a bug in which the screen would flicker when watching youtube. So I moved on to crDroid, since then I stuck with it. Only I then moved to ArrowOS because somehow I corrupted my install of crDroid. Used it for three days before going back to [xiaomi.eu](https://xiaomi.eu), but this time to Android 10 stable release.

It reminded me of that one thing I hated about MIUI, the Ram Management, it’s agressive as hell, I can’t keep apps in memory for too long, and disabling the optimization to fix it breaks even more MIUI features. (The floating window doesn’t work, the battery graph looks like from stock android, some options in the settings doesn’t work and some places like in Themes has Chinese language for some reason lol)

After 2 days of searching for a solution, I didn’t found one so I just backed up my data and moved back to crDroid. I since stuck with it, it was also the rom that my other tablet has. Close to Pixel UI but with a lot of options to tinker without even using Magisk or Xposed. Passes the SafetyNet. And it runs fast (presumably from the custom kernel it has) and it also has long SOT of around 1 day and a half of heavy usage.

Fair enough! So I think as an outcome of this discussion we could say:

Redmi series is frustrating for many people. So custom ROM is an option there. But people should not think Xiaomi is bad just because of one series of phones.

So a Mi phone would be another option as it appears that the quality is better than Redmi.

And yes, flashing can be fun, I did it before aswell. But if you look for a cheap phone that works fine out of the box, Mi is probably the best guess. If you want to play around with flashing, you can buy a Redmi.

I know MIUI 12.5 has (had?) issues with third-party launchers like Nova Launcher. Does Xiaomi.eu have the same issues, do you know?

I didn’t try it, but the most of ROMs didn’t pass it (because of ctsprofile fail). If a developer mentioned that safetynet works, then it works. If nothing said, then no safetynet! You need to patch ctsprofile!

My HTC was an old one, with windows mobile 6.5 (pretty much like a mobile Windows XP counterpart) and it was way overpowered for it. That system could run on a 400mhz CPU with 64mb of RAM, and the phone had 1ghz and 512mb RAM. Sense looked great on it, smooth too. I could afford this phone because the prices dropped really fast when Microsoft discontinued this Windows version. I haven’t tried HTC Android phones, so I can’t tell if it affects performance.

Havoc is focused on customization and performance, which were amazing on mine. My only complaint was my bugged battery life, which was half a day instead of the 2 days that everyone else in the havoc telegram group was posting screenshots of. I tried changing the kernel, because it’s compatible with most kernels, but it didn’t solve my problem

Yeah, Redmi are mostly budget phones that have great specs, but to make it fair for Xiaomi, they put a special version of MIUI in these phones. (That has advertisement)

i’m using mi 9T as well. i was on pixel experience and it was:

    * so much smoother (pixel, iphone level smooth)
    * so much snappier
    * holds apps in background more
    * have as good battery life

but i ended up going back to [xiaomi.eu](https://xiaomi.eu) because private DNS is buggy and only work after you repeteadly turn on and off airplane mode. then it upgraded to android 11, leaving me stuck with either a relatively good android 10 ROM or a great android 11 ROM but without anx camera unless i’m willing to root.

gcam is good, but for video recording anx/miui camera is still the best.

Xiaomi isn’t apple, they make like hundred phones per year and it is impossible to make all phones work stable on MIUI. I bought poco X3 pro and after unlocking bootloader immediately flashed arrow os. Few years ago I loved MIUI for it’s design. It was ahead of its time but now it’s just a piece with a lot of bloatware. Xiaomi.eu seems ok because it’s made by people who love their phones. Currently I’m on crdroid but I’m waiting for lineage os official version with OSS vendor.

Mi9T, one word, wow. This is a high-end device. You know why MIUI works astonishing on it? Because Xiaomi deletes most of ADS on their phones (which are marked as MI). On Redmi budget phones, it’s literally worse, because Xiaomi targets all ads and bloatware on them. Maybe if i had MI 9T, i would stay on MIUI too, but in the meantime, i have Redmi Note 8T which pissed me off by behaving like: “I don’t want yo smoothness, go to hell”.

My custom ROM adventure started with Redmi Note 3 Pro in 2016. Flashed Android 6 to Android 9 ROMs on it. Performance and battery life were so much better in it than MIUI + the Pixel exclusive goodies like Overview Selection are a blessing in disguise. I started with LineageOS based on Android 6. Next, ValidusOS and ViperOS for Android 7 and CosmicOS for Android 8. Then some ROM (forgot the name) for Android 9. Unfortunately, the battery was swollen and had to sell it. Got Poco X2 (Redmi K30 4G outside India) with Android 10. Last December, I switched to CorvusOS based on Android 11 and till last month, stayed with it but I don’t know any proper Pixel Launcher mods that might work in it for Overview Selection and so now am on Pixel Experience Plus. My MagisK only consists of ViperFX and nocutout modules. Going pretty nicely for now 😀

Honestly, I have 0 clue why everyone hates MIUI. Surely, it doesn’t make too much sense conceptually. But I never gave any issue with it. Also, it’s supported. So changing sounds like a… let’s say not so good idea. Unless you are not worried about breaking your phone and it’s kind of a hobby. Otherwise I see no benefit for doing this.

The battery life of my Mi9T is still astonishing, after 20 months. Max 5 crashes in this time, with constant usage. Speed like the first day.

I still don’t get why people but other phones or put on a custom ROM.

I once put a custom ROM on a Samsung. But this was because this phone was horrible crap and I hoped it would improve. It kinda did but it was still crap.

My custom ROM adventures started way back with the Sony Ericsson X8, went up to android 4.2 on it (officially it has 2.1), and the HTC HD2 (probably the most customizable phone ever made), on which I had everything, Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, Ubuntu and a dozen different android versions.

Now I’m on a 8T too, with a completely stock EU region MIUI, which I have some issues with but it’s pretty good. I’ve had HavocOS, which was great, but I couldn’t get the 12-16 hour screen time that people were getting, I had 2. I talked to the maintainer and he couldn’t figure out what might be wrong. Removing my second SIM helped a bit, but I need that, so I had to move on.

Lineage was next, it was smooth, fast, but mobile data didn’t work (which I realized was an oversight from my part, I will try again soon)

I used mi-globe for a while, but then curiosity got the better of me and I went to Pixel Experience +. Hands down the best I’ve used, but then an update came out a couple of weeks ago, which needed a clean flash, and after I did that, I got the “system destroyed” message. I flashed stock MIUI and haven’t had the time to try anything new since.

As a second phone, I have a Redmi 5. I tried not having google on it, I used LineageOS and F-Droid for everything, except 2 apps that I got from Aurora. Since I don’t use it daily, I can experiment with it, now it also has PE+ and it’s surprisingly fast for a budget phone that’s a few years old already

Nobody knows! You need to see comments under the post of ROM! So you will see if there are any mistakes! But if you want to flash something stable, then see different custom ROMs!

Hmm, my point of OTAs was that they were lighter than full ROMs. Maybe i didn’t notice that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Ah yes! About Pixel plus UI: before flashing it, i accidentally soft-bricked my phone! Because i accidentally flashed a wrong rom on it!!! It was a realme ROM. And BOOM! The phone was a brick without any feelings. I got scared, and flashed pixel experience 11. The strangest thing, is that I’ve done all this custom ROM adventure without backups 😳.

Eu xiaomi for the win I have the redmi note 8 miui official is great and all but they need to work on optimizing ram and installing of 3rd party themes and a few other things…………..my first version of miui i ever used was miui4 several years ago on a Chinese brand phone called doogee that i flashed as a custom rom………………..I have been in love with miui since then, due to how heavily it can be themed with anime themes the transformation is really gorgeous………..I am using the latest stable 11 on my note 8 and have no bugs or performance issues also muiu12 is laggy and buggy so I plan to stay on miui11 until this device EOL…………………….I have dug around on the net for a collection of heavy anime themes as it used to have back in the earlier versions of miui and found some old miui 8 and 9 themes and I have edited around 75 of these old themes so far to work properly on miui10 and miui11……….Those themes are the reason why I fell in love with miui and I dont plan to ever use any other kind of rom and only buy xiaomi devices lol…………….when this device does die out and I will need to move up to miui12 or 13 depending on what I purchase I will once again take my time and edit all of these themes to support whatever version of miui that will be on that device I have always hated android for it’s plainness and lack of customization have no intention to ever go back to android and will never regret it ……… miui for life………………Eu xiaomi brings out the best in miui in battery performance and customization…………I get no less than 8 hrs SOT with heavy online gaming throughout the day If i dont play online games and play like drastic or psp emulator I get around 12 to 14 hrs SOT battery life is always amazing on EU xiaomi

Im using Poco Launcher but I don’t believe the xiaomi.eu guys modify anything related to quickstep.

In other words, I don’t know but I would assume that the behaviour is the same on both.

As someone whose loved Google/Pixel because of the pure android experience, where would I find the Pixel ROM? I currently have the Mi 11 Ultra and I’ll definitely be wanting to install it if I can. Otherwise I’d have to go with Xiaomi EU

I want to clarify that i am not hating on Xiaomi or dislike it. I love Xiaomi because of their quality of products and their price. And i want to say that MIUI is good too, it has many features that nobody has on custom roms, like cleaning system and antivirus built in.

But many people tend to hate this company because they have to set the phone up and tweak it, because it works bad out of the box (like always happens when you buy a Redmi). Imagine: you buy a car and drive straight in garage to fix some of the problems. Same with Redmi phones: you buy a phone, and instead of using it, you tweak it. Many people hate it.

The main problem here is: there are many people who don’t know that Redmi are REALLY BUDGET phones. So they buy a phone… And they start to hate company that their phone lags or does strange stuff.

But many people will say: but they have amazing specs, how they are lagging like phones for 5$? That is the main target of Redmi phones: Xiaomi spends many money on them, and sells them for cheap! How they will get income? Only on a software part! They put ads to get income from phones they make!

I am reminding that i still love Xiaomi, but there are some problems with their budget models that i want to fix before using them. Like installing a custom rom, which will make phone better because of a lighter kernel, graphics and some other things.

And in your previous reply, you said that many people are flashing, because it’s their hobby. Lol 🤣, you’re right, it became a hobby for me. Because when i am flashing, i always go to settings first, to see what changed 😂.

    Horses for courses.

xiaomi.eu if you need some MIUI specific features like dual apps.
Lineage is my preference of all the custom ROMs as it’s low on customisation options resulting in a lean, and solid, system.
You can use it completely de-googled, (if you’re happy to use alternative apps), or you can add Google apps support and install the same system apps that you’d find on Pixel Experience.
    Lineage gives the user choice!

So I still don’t get it. I thought the point of this whole rant was that you don’t want to buy a Xiaomi anymore because you don’t like it.

That would mean that you’d have to pay much more for a phone that has roughly the same specs.

Now we established that a Mi would probably solve your issues, in other words: Not the brand but your model appears to be bad.

Now you say your budget isn’t big enough, so you can’t buy any other phone anyway. But when it’s time you’ll but a Mi. You’ll be able to buy a Mi much before any other comparable phone because it’s so much cheaper.

So why the hate against Xiaomi? I’ll never get it why people are so much against a company that make amazing products for very cheap.

It appears to me that many people just want to hate, or at least dislike, this brand and want to find reasons for it. When in reality they benefit a lot from the company’s price strategy and technology.

I didn’t use any custom rom yet. But when I compare my phone to others with less rams and much worse processors and see how smooth they are and how laggy my phone is I realize that I must flash a custom rom soon.

I want to try corvus os but I had some problems with my sim card so I will have to wait until I get a new one. (I don’t care about gpay and customisation and this stuff the most important thing for me is performance).

I have been flashing custom ROMs since the Redmi Note 4 days. The performance, stability and battery life was a day and night difference, I’m not exagerrating. If you are lucky to find a very stable custom rom build for your device, you will have a great experience.

MIUI has gone better compared on the previous years, but it still need more optimization.

For my usage, the latest version is the best one we’ve had so far, (and I’ve used all of them).

    12.0.1 RJZMIXM

Just make sure your device is codenamed Joyeuse, because if it’s not, you could run into trouble.

Lineage has the worst support of gapps, if you flash them, the system will lose it’s great spark! 🙁 But without them, it works literally good and fast!

Pixel experience is a good optimized ROM to work as google pixel, you get great benefits of having a Google pixel in your phone, the support team is big and gapps are already in ROM! Google pay is patched out of the box! Perfect to start from!

Xiaomi.EU is a debloated Chinese MIUI. If you want not to lose a great interface and design, then flash this. The performance is the nearly the same as a normal MIUI, but battery holds longer, and no AD with spyware, which means that android will use less RAM. Google pay is patched, big community that releases some patches and interesting tweaks and gapps are included! Flash if you want to use MIUI and not AOSP!

I own a Redmi Note 8 and have only tried 3 custom ROMs on it namely, Lineage OS, crDroid, and Xiaomi.eu. Personally, I’ve stuck with crDroid because I find that it has offered the most stability and most customizability compared to Lineage OS. I like MIUI and I would’ve stuck with it if it wasn’t for some weird quirks like in its implementation of dark mode and the low audio volume which necessitates changing regions.

Performance was great in all of them when compared to MIUI haha. I just switched coz most of them dropped support for RN3 Pro.

When you say RN9P, do you mean the Redmi note 9 Pro Global version? I have the global version, and the only thing that’s keeping me from trying out custom ROMs (namely Xiaomi.eu) is the fact that it doesn’t have an official TWRP release… Could you elaborate on how you managed to do it? Maybe a tutorial you followed?
    Thanks!

If you would like greater performance and battery life, then use arrow. But there is some bad things in this desicion, like: google pay, encryption, unlocked bootloader being detected. If you want to fix google pay and bootloader being detected, then install magisk with ROM, some patches and ta-daa! You’re good to go!

Used to have a Redmi 6. My friend told me to flash a Custom ROM on it but I was pretty sceptical about it because bootloader warranty void and stuff like that.

I’ve decided to and honestly that was such a great decision, it was a bit hard to learn everything since I was a beginner then (I would ask loads of questions lmao) but it was great not having to experience the laggy MIUI. Since it’s a MediaTek device there were nearly no official stuff, only Nusantara Project and Pitch Black Recovery. I had LineageOS, Bootleggers, Havoc but they would all have bugs. Nusantara was the one pretty much without bugs, just that you can’t change call volume.

I even bricked it two times and had to restore the IMEI numbers lmao but it was entertaining

A few days ago I got my Poco X3 NFC and I went to unlock my bootloader (currently waiting) still on the same day. My parents are against it because “I don’t know anything” and “warranty void” but they don’t understand how shit the MIUI For Poco is lol. Besides it’s not that hard to learn.

I have the 8t..got it in early 2020..came with miui 11 android 9 which to be fair I couldn’t fault..and then the miui 12 android 10 update came out..the excitement was short lived..pile of [email protected] I unlocked the bootloader and flashed back to miui 9..then I though I’d flash to Xiaomi eu rom..to be honest I can’t tell you my overall impression on it as I’ve bought a pixel 3a..which I like alot..clean android..still got till may next year for regular updates..android 12 around the corner..I may keep the 8t as back up..but all I read on here is horror stories usually after people have updated to the latest versions of there device firmware..I can honestly say that a Xiaomi phone will never be high on my next to buy list

Thanks alot for the reply! I’ve checked Orange fox’s site, and they do have the note 9 Pro officially listed (under the name miatoll). Which is great! All I have to do now is unlock my bootloader and install OrangeFox.
I have just over final question regarding Xiaomi.eu: I’ve checked their device list, and they seem to lack stable 12.5 version of MIUI. What version of Xiaomi.eu are you using?

Seems like a good idea. ArrowOS is perfect for an old smartphone! Light and also customizable to an extent.

But nothing can beat crDroid when it comes to customization hahaha

With adb, you can delete most of stock apps without any root! And they will not be running in the background.

    OrangeFox Custom Recovery

It’s very popular with Xiaomi users and is the preferred custom recovery for the majority of the custom rom for our device.

So everyone hates MIUI, installs custom ROMs and then realized that they’re all buggy. There’s a magic called product support that applies to all products made by companies. For software basically that means that a software will be updated if it’s crappy.

A custom ROM is made by enthusiasts in their spare time. It’s an amazing thing made by amazing people. But it will always be more buggy. Because bugs are fucking tedious to work on and there’s a reason why good software is written by big teams.

Honestly, this whole ‘You need a custom ROM’ sounds to me pretty much like selection bias. People have the opinion that MIUI is crap, because everyone else has this opinion. And then they install a custom ROM and tell everyone how great it is… But you said yourself that they’re all buggy 😅 So they kinda… want it to be like this?!

Well I guess I’m not able to understand it. My Mi9T runs smoother than any other phone I’ve ever had and the battery is so fucking good, even after 20 months. I don’t have a single issue with this phone. And I’m a generally very critical person when it comes to shitty usability.

If you like performance, you can flash lineage OS with Google apps, it will be very fast and lightweight!

About corvus: this OS may use a custom kernel, which will make phone smoother, but it will totally sacrifice your battery. I tried Resurrection remix which used a custom kernel, and battery life was near a half of a day :((. You can try it, tho because nobody knows what you will get.

Happy flashing! This is easy to flash new roms, because everything became so automatic! And Xiaomi phones are good, because they have a big chunk of different custom ROMs! “What roms?”- You may ask. Well: Resurrection remix, Dot os, Bliss rom, Lineage, PE, Omni, Evolution X and many others!
