go read the OP’s reply below. He says he bought the phone from gearbest and used a replacement cable. The title wasn’t clear enough, hence the question. He probably brought both the cable and the device (phone) from gearbest, how would I know.

There isn’t much you can do because after-market cables don’t undergo quality assuance tests as rigorously as the OEM cables and OEMs don’t recommend using such cables. Especially so for Type-C cables.

Melted connector most likely didn’t get INSIDE, so just take it out and clean the phone.
You can cool it down solid or melt it again with an hairdryer if you want to try other methods.

always invest in good cables man (Especially USB Type-C), that cable probably wasn’t rated to handle prolonged period of charging.

    What was the brand name?

USB Type C is different than micro usb and needs much more quality materials inside to withstand the power delivery. Even a sturdy cable that looks like a quality one can be bad.

The problem is not with the build quality, materials used, etc. (though it may very well could be), but Type-C specs for charging vary from OEM-to-OEM because there are competing proprietary charging methods. For example, in late 2016, Google asked OEMs to use USB-PD (the one specified in the standard) method so that cables and chargers can have interoperatibility. But as Qualcomm has a near monopoly on smartphone SoC market, nearly every OEM support Qualcomm’s Quick-Charge method which modifies the Vbus voltage to provide greater power delivery and hence faster charging.

Now, the after market charger or cable may not be build to specifications and could overheat or not withstand the particular charging method. The fact that it worked fine for months doesn’t mean it won’t fail under certain conditions.

    Also, see this article: https://www.theverge.com/2015/11/26/9804728/oneplus-usb-type-c-cable-refunds

There could be so many reasons for this to fail, it is mind boggling. Type-C was supposed to be “one cable for all”, but that’s certainly not the case.

Anyone can make a garbage cable feel “premium”. The cost to achieve such impression is almost nothing. The cable probably does not even meet the specs.

It looks like hot glue that melted. Let it cool down for a while, and scrap it out with toothpick. It will come off easily. DO NOT try to melt it down, it will only create more mess.

Always use cables from quality & reliable brands example Belkin if you want to use a third party cable. You can skimp on the adapter but never do that for the cable.

    https://bensonapproved.com

This Google engineer explains it all well. Even big brands didn’t comply to the USB specs for USB C in the early stages.

And if no, the user can replace the entire daughter board which is very very easy and very cheap.

After market cables from gearbest/china don’t, usually. But there are good brands from China too.

I have a few xiaomi ones, but I swear the original Sony cable charges faster.

Despite how often and prevalent this was in the news it seems that people still haven’t learned: do not buy non-certified USB-C cables.

    http://www.usb.org/kcompliance/view/USB%20Type-C%20Cable%20Certifications.pdf

This is the list of products that have been certified, outside of a few exceptions (like Xiaomi’s own USB-C cables) you should avoid buying cables from other brands because this can and will happen if they have the wrong specifications.

Edit: you saved what, $10 on the cable by buying it from Gearbest? And you lost a $300+ phone. It’s not worth it. It never has been it never will be. USB-C cables are great and convenient but they can also be death traps for your devices.

If you want to buy from a cheap chinese brand at least pic a cable from a more reputable/established brand like UGreen.

Stick with [approved cables](https://www.androidauthority.com/best-usb-type-c-cables-682801/). We all like value and it’s probably a big part of why we own Xiaomis, but spend the extra few bucks on a proper cable.

This is the sign of a low quality USB-C cable.
The power wires were probably too thin for the amperage that the QC 3 charger puts out for the phone.

If you want a reliable and great cable with high quality power cabling, I would advise to buy a cable from either Anker, Blitzwolf, or Aukey, and perhaps Orico.

These are the brands that I trust the most, and have a lot of experience with, especially Blitzwolf since they always list their complete specs and are available cheaply.

Here is an excellent 6ft one that I own in micro-USB and USB-C variant:

That or if you need quick charge at work, but slow at home, just charge the phone trough USB 3 port on your PC (no need to buy a new charger). As long as you’ve connected the USB 3 port like you should, even if the PC is turned off, you can charge your phone.

Turns out, it’s not the best gear.

    I’ll show myself out.

    Thanks for updating.

Where are you from? we can recommend some good cables from Amazon if you want to.

Don’t go for fancy cables, stick to Aukey, Anker or Amazon Basics or even Xiaomi makes quality cables.

Your phone doesn’t look safe enough to keep in a pocket. Whatever caused the original problem most likely resulted in something else breaking within the phone. If I were to guess, the wire material sucked ass and shoved plastic into your port, something in the phone probably got too hot because of this and now your battery could be Samsung level danger zone. Get a new phone your battery might be damaged. Even if I’m wrong, don’t take a chance. That heat mark in the surrounding area of the port doesn’t look good.

Edit: probably not the first to say this, either way good luck OP.

I bought this one on local phone pop up store. I’m sticking to original until it dies now 😉
I’m from Poland, we have limited access to Amazon stuff here.

The thing is even Xiaomi USB C cable is approved & is fairly priced. The list you posted isn’t exaustive. If OP stuck with that he would be having a much better day. Probably went for the cable since it was “braided”. You can check the website I linked in one of the comments & check his Amazon ratings list.

    >Always use cables from quality & reliable brands example Belkin if you want to use a third party cable. You can skimp on the adapter but never do that for the cable.

    >This Google engineer explains it all well. Even big brands didn’t comply to the USB specs for USB C in the early stages.

Anker has mostly fixed their issues, others I wouldn’t trust. For example Aukey has lots of problems. Good test here

I can vouch for the Blitzwolf 6ft one, too. I’ve been using it for half a year with my Mi5 and an Aukey QC3 charger and it’s working really well.

night charging is actually bad too because it charges and holds the battery to 100% / 4.2V

I *almost* linked that site as well except for:

    >This site is not in any way related to the person of Benson Leung or Google Inc.

And it felt like a huge Belkin ad… Either way, yes, stick with his tested and approved cables.

There’s a link on the description of the website which takes you to all the reviews he has done for USB C cables on Amazon.

yeah, in terms of “how to kill a battery” its “discharge to 0%” > “charge beyond 1C aka fast charging” > “keep at 100%”
