Less options, higher price, no difference at all but name once custom roms, which are superior, are considered.
You could pay the same price for something much better. Or you could pay far less for something nearly identical.
The A1 was just another phone to dump the sd625 with and take advantage of the ignorance of the masses. “It has Android One. I heard that’s amazing.”
And every owner is now either faced with admitting they made a mistake. Otherwise they’re keeping themselves “sane” by telling themselves they didn’t make a mistake at all.
But then anyone sane would have crossed the a1 off their list from the moment it’s specs were revealed.
I’m too lazy for that because i don’t give a shit about xiaomi anymore, but in involves cpu bug, dead backside camera, fingerprint sensor and not to mention shit software with no upgrades
Some of you won’t agree but these are my experiences after owning 2 of their phones and both of them crapped out within a year.
So 400€ “budget” phone per year is no cheaper than 800 per 2 years
So unless xiaomi GIVES me next 2 phones for free, to prove to me i was just unlucky, I AM NOT BUYING ANY OF THEIR SHIT EVER AGAIN, because honestly why would i?
I think that’s right yeah. The SE has a rear fp and I’d imagine the regular 8 does too.
Right. So according to you, objectively, the A1 is subpar compared to other 2017 Xiaomi phone. Got any way to justify that claim? That somehow, stock Android will provide a subpar experience, or has not enough merit to provide the price difference, objectively?
People buying a subpar phone at a premium price are.
Unless paying more for less is a good thing Ofcourse.
Right. So people who have different value as you are idiots?
Nice.
Unfortunate.
Idiots did, yeah.
[It’s true.](https://twitter.com/ChengmingAlpert/status/1002212318875471873?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.androidpolice.com%2F2018%2F05%2F31%2Ftheres-something-fishy-transparent-xiaomi-mi-8-explorer-edition%2F&tfw_creator=RyanWhitwam&tfw_site=AndroidPolice)
The ones that you see on the transparent back, it’s just for show.
[is this an???](https://i.imgur.com/835SVd6.jpg)
The 5x was never the best model either, but people still wanted the A1.
Well I guess it’s official guys, my next phone won’t be a Xiaomi.
As much as I like my Mi5 and though Miui 9 changed some of the biggest gripes I had with it and improved its performance significantly the latest flagship adopts most of the worst trends we’ve seen in smartphone design in the latest years and as Xiaomi slowly but steadily removes the headphone jack from even its Redmi line the chances of me getting one of their devices when my Mi5 calls it quits is very slim.
I understand I’m in a minority of appreciating headphone jacks and though I like that they went with Oled and have great cameras, they also adopted the horrible notch which I loathe and while I know it will be hard to buy a new device without one there are still a few manufacturers that make great devices without them and they both include headphone jacks.
I mean, I guess we can have both a notch and a bezel.
Still big
[It’s fake](https://twitter.com/ChengmingAlpert/status/1002212318875471873?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.androidpolice.com%2F2018%2F05%2F31%2Ftheres-something-fishy-transparent-xiaomi-mi-8-explorer-edition%2F&tfw_creator=RyanWhitwam&tfw_site=AndroidPolice)
They should’ve named it the “Mi Hate”
Apple cucks that’s who, they should have forgone the notch and data collecting/privacy risk/surveillance face scanning crap and just had the under screen fingerprint scanner on all the models. Disgusted at this release.
Yep terrible direction for the company, this release is lame. Incapable of or even wanting to be original.
Pathetically unoriginal and unimaginative design and shameless copying of iPhone X. Only an apple cuck would buy this.
3400mAh for Mi 8,
3000mAh for Mi 8 Explorer,
3120mAh for Mi 8 SE
I’m still looking to confirm Qi / wireless charging, it isn’t mentioned on the Xiaomi website and other hardware sites seem to have conflicting information.
AFAIK the Mi 8 EE doesn’t have the antenna necessary for Qi charging.
Blegh… I might fall back on buying a Mi Mix 2S, it’s been out for awhile now and it is getting cheaper.
I see now that the normal mi8 has the 845, wasn’t very clear in the most voted comment. I feel relieved, but the jump in screen size is still too huge for me.
the IR face unlock just illuminates the face with infrared and takes a 2D picture, security is similar to other face unlocks (might be tricked by a photo)
3D face unlock has a dot/pattern projector, security similar to iPhone X
Read and write both would mean you could copy certain info to and from several devices quite easily.
The 7xx is a flagship processor in many ways. Releasing both a 7xx and 8xx high end phone is definitely a good thing imo.
The 710 is on par with the 835 in most use cases. The 845 is about 25% faster.
This isnt the xiaomi that either had a 625 or 835. And nothing else.
Not a rebrand, the 670 was never released after all.
Is 5000mAh battery a thing of the past for xiaomi (in phones less than 6″)
Even if it becomes the a2 it’ll be a ridiculous phone to buy.
Well I just read about the fake internal thing on the verge and just a few minutes ago they gave an update. So if it is fully true then it is pretty freaking awesome.
[Update May 31st, 10:05am: Updated post to include and reflect Xiaomi’s statement to The Verge that that Mi 8 Explorer Edition does showcase the actual parts on the back of the phone, contradicting the company’s earlier description of the device.](https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/5/31/17412658/xiaomi-transparent-mi8-explorer-edition-internal-phone)
Well thats the problem, altough i heard its not good to use the phone while charging it.
But if you still want to do it, there are some adapters 2-1 for charging and listening to music.
> why do u care about the notch? turn it off and its no different from a samsung from front.
why? explain? you wish to have less screen because? it doesnt even matter once u flip a single switch.
It’s fake internals though and smaller battery to fit it all.
But Mi[number] phones always had a flagship processor. That’s the reason I bought them, you could have a phone with flagship speed for 350 euros. For medium level processors I’ve a lot more options than a Xiaomi, some of them maybe better, for that price.
Yes I did, would gladly pay the bigger price for a phone of 5.6″ with top specs.
Did you notice the price tag?
in for more info
in for more info
All of those Xiaomis come with an adapter, i use it in my Minote 3, since i dont like bluetooh, so its not a problem for me.
Does anyone know if Mi 8 has dual speakers \(Earpiece \+ Bottom\)?
that they’re piece of shit with too many “hardware bugs”
Each to their own, obviously. I’ve used Nova launcher since forever and always keep the notification bar hidden, though, so there’s no screen space taken by it.
Does the normal MI8 feature the 3d face unlock, or do I need to get the Explorer Edition, which also features the in display fp scanner?
Oke, it’s different apparently.
Yep, Oneplus stayed pretty much the same, and OP5 has 5.5″ in 16:9, while OP6 has 6.3″ in 19:9.
Nice a Pixel will definitely be on my list at some point in future years to come 🙂
mi8 doesnt have faceid, just infrared camera for unlocking with no light.
only the mi8 EE have iphone X like faceid.
the mi8 se uses the standard face unlock on xiaomi phones.
I’m not sure, I couldn’t find any relevant info. Maybe the non-FP, non-SE only has Face Unlock?
There definitely will be by the end of 2018, in the same respect I think Mi Mix 3 will also be 🙂
General Kenobi!
maybe the fingerprint reader and could also be some design of the back for the transparent back that made it smaller!
C’mon, you can’t deny that. It’s so weird.
I don’t like the notch but it gives you more screen because that the clock, battery, alerts all are at the same lvl than the camera and other sensors. I have a Mix2 and the little part of the screen that shows notifications, time, etc is “wasted” space, you could add a noth in the middle and it wouldnt take part of the creen because it’s already used by the notification bar.
I think so.
There is no oneplus 6t btw
The marketing said its saver. Don’t know if its true.
Wait what? Smaller battery? Wtf?
Does that Picture mean 6.21″ in 18:9 is equivalent to a 5.5″ 16:9 ?
Isnt the explorer edition the only one with FP scanner under the screen? That should mean the other have FP scanner on the back
What’s the difference between 3D face unlock and infrared face unlock?
Not sure. I would be the first in the MiX series
So what does this mean for US buyers? AT&T is mostly covered, right? What about T-Mobile?
Am I reading this wrong, or does this look like it’ll actually work on TMO fully? Except for missing LTE 66 and 71 (which I don’t have right now on the Mi Mix 2 anyway)
Sure is annoying to care about batteries, but really that is not a problem for most people, we are used to batteries in everything, and many people carry around powerbanks for emergencies.
My wireless batteries last days, maybe it happened once in 4 years to be out of juice, it is practically a non existent problem.
You can have controls in the exact same position with wireless sets, and the way sets are secured to the ears now, impossible to drop them even when running, instead with cable you keep pulling it, you wear a jacket and you have to remove it, you wear a bag and they are on the way, and they are always tangled no matter what you do.
Never had a case for earphones, wireless or wired, they never broke or did anything funny.
The only argument that really makes sense versus bluetooth is that cable gives a much better quality, but that is basically killed by the fact of buying cheap sets.
That isnt saying wireless comes without any cons, battery is one for example, but if we talk about being dumb or dont, well, bluetooth simply isnt dumb, but aside personal preferences, it is objective that around you see more people talking to phones using wireless technologies compared to wired techs, more people that thinks wireless is more comfortable than wired, that is why companies will move into those easier, if the market was more inclined to buy wired techs, the companies would have moved there.
I understand why you or other people dont like wireless sets, I mean everything is up to preferences sometimes, but they are definitely not dumb, in reality they are very practical.
Damn . i need a new phone, but the explorer edition does not have a release date. The under screen scanner is a thing I want and not the face unlock stuff.
The switch to OLED is exciting, so long as it’s a better panel than Mi Note 2.
No back FP scanner on any of them? I might have to go with a Redmi in the end 🙁
absolutely, will be a beast. Just answered the question!
Based on that comment, I wonder are they planning to release the mi max 3 with the 710. That will be pretty sick.
There’s a reason they gave you a 5.8″ screen instead of the standard 5.7.
It’s a 670 rebranded. According to pre-release info, 30% more powerful and 20% less consumption than the 660.
Ikr? You literally don’t have a good enough excuse to not save up for the se. Unless 6X becomes the A2, it’s a pretty redundant model.
Fugly looking screen chip
Shit, they actually got me with the smaller version featuring an oled panel. I didn’t had the time to read the full article but I hope it comes with a decent screen resolution.
For someone from the UK looking to buy a new phone by the end of 2018 its going to come down to:
Mi 8, Mi Mix 3 or OnePlus 6T.
Someone needs to convince me to sway it in Xiaomi’s favour with particular reference to software ie MIUI, updates etc etc. If you know what I mean ?
Edit:
In my sentence I do say “by the end of 2018”. The 2 phones mentioned that don’t currently exist surely will.
I wish xiaomi would release a phone like iphone SE – small, compact, regular OS updates, camera with raw, no bloatware. In my dreams, lol
That’s true, so the Mi8SE is closer to the Mi line in the past. But still, the SE has a 7 series processor, not an 8.
My thoughts exactly… One of the main reasons I bought a Mi5 was because it is quite small but still has flagship specs.
[It doesn’t sadly](https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_8_se_is_out__the_first_snapdragon_710powered_smartphone-news-31396.php)
Yes, the Mi8SE only has a [fingerprint sensor on the back](https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_8_se_is_out__the_first_snapdragon_710powered_smartphone-news-31396.php) and no face ID
I’m gonna guess it will be greater than 600 euro
Why can the budget redmi phones house a 4000 mah battery but the flagship only 3400mah

Any Word about band 20?
yes
EDIT-But others have 3D facial Recognition i think
Much better, even faster than 660. Getting close to 835 according to Geekbench scores.
Is there any reason to get hyped for Xiaomi phones anymore when you already know they’re all going to look the same in the end. Wtf is wrong with Xiaomi right now.
How good is it compared to the 636? To the 845?
If i didn’t already own 2 xiaomi phones, I’d say this one is gooooood, but I know better
what? thats exactly what a notch is. and the essential phone has the smallest one out there. are you blind?
Only the Explorer edition has an under screen fingerprint Scanner?
At least here it has a point, you need a lot of space for all of those scanners
It is a Samsung panel.
Interesting decision to give AMOLED to the “little brother” phone. Don’t suppose there was any info whether it’s a Samsung AMOLED or what?
SD 710 is great processor. If the price is great as well.
Is camera spec. same on both mi 8 and mi 8 se?
I really hope the could name the Mi8 SE to Mi Note 4 bcoz that makes more sense than this SE mess
Obviously you are going to buy a device according to your likings, and that is completely fine.
But you have to be one of the very few people on earth thinking that bluetooth is dumb.
Anyway, aside personal reason and if you listen a lot of music while charging, there is almost no reason to go for cable if you just buy cheap performing phones, bluetooth will perform just as fine in the sub 30$ range.
Yeah it’s still frustrating how poor the Mi6 is for photos. Really needs a software tweak.
correct, I missed out on distinction due to language barrier
I understood only the Explorer edition.
Anyways, the prices are really good.
Worse processor and probably the rest of specs too 🙁
Why worse?
Wow that GPS accuracy!
No headphone jack. No thanks.
That’s a big disappointment. I guess I will try the smaller one, but I don’t like having a version with worse specs. They really should have gone with sd845 in both phones. I hope that it has the dual GPS and that the rest of the specs are same as mi 8 and not slower memory, worse cameras etc
yes forgot the se
3400mAh, added spec sheet to album
I can live with notch but headphone jack missing is big no. There is zero USB-C headphones in my country under 50$ (mind you max I can give for headphones is 30$). Dongle is ever more dumb than bluetooth
Anyone know if there’s any information on the GSM bands? Or is the mix 2s still the only one I’ll be able to use in the US?
mi6 was great. thats why there was a plus variant for the older mi series phones. or even the note variant
Is it going to be sold in Xiaomi Europe? I’m assuming yes, but when?
why do u care about the notch? turn it off and its no different from a samsung from front.
it could have been done better though. why not put all the 3d sensing and such at the bottom chin and leave the top with an essential phone like tiny notch
no, all Mi 8 has face ID. I think the Mi 8 SE (cheaper and worse version) also has face ID.
the mi8se killed the mi6x so hard.
if 6x doesnt become the a2, i dont know if theres really a reason to get it.
mi note 3 had better software than the mi6. it still has better pictures despite the same sensor.
Two models, it seems like, 6,21 inch and 5,88 inch.
[But keep in mind that the sizes of a 16:9 and 18:9 are different.](https://imgur.com/8xKscDV)
Anything about the battery?
I wonder whether this will mean that, with upcoming software updates, the Mi Mix 2s camera will become as good as on the Mi 8
ew notch 🤮
Pricing is in yuan, I converted to USD. So just convert from USD to EUR to find base price and then add whatever EU resellers take to that.
> No In Screen FP
It has this (edit: in Explorer Edition), unless I completely misunderstood the portion where they were directly comparing it to the Vivo X21’s in-screen FP.
It’s a flagship. All flagships are 6″+
6/64: $421
6/128: $468
6/256: $514
edit: 8/128: $578
Regular Mi 8 starts at 2,699 Yuan. See other post in this thread for other versions
the Mi 8 \(special edition?\) will be the first phone on the market to feature both L1 and L5 GPS frequencies for better gps location fix. They showed a video of a guy in a Mini Cooper with the windows all painted black and he only relied on the Mi 8 to guide him through an obstacle course to show how accurate it is
Mi 8 special edition where its’ a transparent back, and you can see the internal components \+ “Face ID” \+ under screen FP, 8G/128, 3,699 Yuan \(roughtly 580 usd\)
Regular version does not have under screen FP Scanner.
Mi 8 SE, 5.88″ AMOLED, “feels like 5.2” “. SD710, 10nm. 3,120 mAh battery ew. Pretty much lines up with the leaks. 1,799 for 4G/64, 1,999 6G/64. 1,999 yuan is around 320 usd.
lol he was pretty self aware about Xiaomi being married to the SD625 and he’s like “it might be 710 from now on”
Next up is Mi TV. 4K HDR, 11.4mm thick, 75″, 2GB/32, 8,999 Yuan \(1.4k usd\)
Mi VR headset \- Looks to be wireless. Partnership with Occulus. “Fast\-Switch 2K display” ?????. 32GB Version 1,499, 64GB 1,799.
Mi Band 3 \- 0.78″ oled display \+ button, displays up to 24 Chinese characters, shows text and calls, weather, pedometer, waterproof up to 50M, heartrate, 110 mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.2, 169 Yuan \(\~27 usd\), nfc version 199 yuan
tl;dr Mi 8, Mi 8 special edition, Mi 8 SE, Mi Band 3, Mi TV, Mi VR, MIUI 10,
6+ inches?? no thanks
Hate it or love it, it still gives you extra screen space no matter how you look at it.
about the big notch, it used to house the Infrared scanner/3D face recognition as well as earpirce, front cam and sensor. but damn that chin tho
Same sensor and (I assume) lenses of the Mi Mix 2s, so is it just the software that made it have 105 pts in DxOMark photos compared to the 2s’ 101?
I’m adding interesting images to the album as I see them on stream but the reddit preview of album doesn’t show them, click through to imgur.
(right now it’s all about 3D face recognition)
Just one question: what is the point of this design? The giant notch takes up over half of the top edge, so it doesn’t really give you much added screen space. They could’ve just as well released a phone with the same size lip at bottom and top. The only point of this design seems to be to say “look, we are trendy, we have a notch too!”
Thanks
Announcement ongoing, ask again in 15-30 minutes. Should be less than $500 for base model.
Looks great, what is the price?
