I recently bought a Xiaomi 15 Ultra (16GB/512GB), the global variant. I intended to keep it but now that Oppo has launched the X8 Ultra, I’m strongly considering switching. Am I being dumb?
Reasons:
– Don’t like HyperOS, think I’d prefer ColorOS
– Don’t like the rounded bezels on the 15 Ultra, would prefer flat screen of the X8 Ultra
– Battery capacity (5400mAh) is much lower than X8 Ultra (6100mAh)
– Cameras should be comparable
– Prefer the design of the X8 Ultra
I’m hesitant though since the Oppo (CN only version) doesn’t support eSIM, doesn’t come with an extended warranty, and may have bloatware.
as owners of x15u, you know and I know that vivo x200 pro global version is the one to beat. Xiaomi did good marketing, put good hardware in and sold us a camera centric phone for megabucks, yet vivo does it better for less… ah well.
Looks like I am not the only one wondering if I should switch to the Oppo, the Xiaomi has some good cameras but a phone is not just cameras…
I had the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and sent it back to now import me a Oppo Find X8 Ultra from HK.
I agree. Specs-wise they’re fairly similar. In terms of cameras, I’ve watched multiple reviews/comparisons, and the consensus is that while one might edge out the other in certain areas, they’re basically equally as good. 8K and log video recording aren’t features that I would use so I wouldn’t miss them.
Just like you said, it comes down to software as well as battery life. I have experienced HyperOS now and I don’t like it. Based on what I’ve seen I think I would enjoy ColorOS a lot more. In terms of battery life, the Xiaomi doesn’t just have a smaller battery, it also – in my experience – has noticeable battery drain. That’s understandable to a degree since I set the screen to max resolution but what’s the purpose of having a nice, sharp screen if you’re supposed to lower the resolution to get enough battery life out of your phone. They should’ve installed a bigger battery or optimized battery usage then.
Quite true on the fingerprint scanner and 41… I shouldn’t trust GSMarena specs 🙂
Display brightness and colours
Nice to have 8k and log options considering these are primarily camera focused devices
I had the 15ultra and sold it at no loss. I’m switching to either the Oppo X8 ultra or the Vivo x200 ultra for the exact reasons you stated. Leaning towards Oppo x8 ultra cos I do like Colour OS.
Good to hear! I think the Oppo will end up being more balanced of the two overall (I also use the Xiaomi 15 Ultra global variant) as the Xiaomi still needs some more updates and optimizations from being truly great. However, I’m pretty happy with my phone.
I’m in the exact same situation… The camera is amazing on the 15 ultra, but the battery and software is making me second guess the phone
I feel you and I have the same reservations. For me when I had the 15 ultra, I was strongly reminded why I didn’t like any OS done by Xiaomi so far
Fingerprint Scanner is Ultrasonic on both phones, Storage Tech is UFS 4.1 on both if you mean that by “Tech”, Display Quality (prob. Brightness).
Who really shoots in 8K or LOG video, massive files and post processing.. imo
I think it comes down to the Software, I can understand OP since, I think the software of Xiaomi is not as polished and done as other software such as ColorOS or OneUI or OxygenOS.
using 15u now. except battery phone is perfect. i am ok with hyperos but would be so much better if its color os. if u switch, u will be missing out the 200mp zoom lens.
Depending on your country, the X8 Ultra may not have any wireless bands support. It’s basically missing almost all the global bands, especially in North America. When Oppo said China only release, they really meant it. The Vivo will be the same.
If you do go to the Oppo device I would be very interested to know your opinions between the two 🙂
Good luck whatever you decide 🙂
I’ve had it for one week. I’ve gotten a little more used to the software, but it’s still a shame that I can’t use nova launcher with gestures…
I got a good deal on the Xiaomi which is why I bought it. I had initially planned to wait until both the Oppo and Vivo Ultras have launched.
Got the Xiaomi for way below retail
I am aware of the differences. I would have considered the Vivo X200 Ultra – was actually my favorite – but according to information on Geekwills/Giztop on supported bands, many relevant bands for my country aren’t supported.
Thanks, will do that 👍
It does, you just have to know what to do… I got Nova Launcher working on the X7 Ultra, and I will get it working on the X8 Ultra as well.
I checked the supported bands. Luckily, all relevant bands are supported (I’m located in Germany).
Let’s understand each other. Xiaomi 15U is camera phone centered around manual handling, you can get pretty good and superb photos on auto shooting but the best potential you get with time spent on adjusting the settings and frame of taking picture etc. Oppo Find X8U Is also a great phone but more oriented to the auto shooting with little like feeling of manual handling through the camera app but that’s is not seen on final product (photo) because Oppo simply have heavier post processing and how much do you change through same simple settings that won’t be seen as on Xiaomi.
Simply put choose between more manually or auto shooting actually between heavier or lighter post processing, and also the software thing. I personally love hyper OS but I would love little more customisation, and I personally would chose between Xiaomi 15u or Vivo x200u (yes I know that vivo have heavy as hell processing).
What do you think the updates and optimizations will bring? I think I heard that the (camera) performance of the 14 Ultra improved significantly after some updates (correct me if I’m wrong).
Battery on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is shit, it’s a pain in the ass to get gestures to work with 3rd party launchers (you can “trick” the system so it works, by making a Second Space, enabling gestures in THAT, and then returning to the ‘main’ space) and the Oppo has a much larger battery, even if the cameras are slightly worse (care??) it should last a good while longer, and its display is completely flat and not “micro curved on all four sides” which is meh at best…
How are you managing to sell it at no loss?
No eSim?
The Xiaomi (Global variant) supports eSIM, the Oppo doesn’t
I think you should switch
On a completely unrelated topic, if you do switch, I’ll be happy to take the Xiaomi off your hands
You guys all who are planning to switch to Find X8U should wait atleast couple of more weeks for X200U or else I’m sure there will be posts again soon.
I am not a power user, only use it for web surfing and messaging and ALOT of shooting, the 1 inch sensor in good light gives good image quality, the photographic kit extends its photographic centricity ( the smaller complementing sensors are middling but that is just the way physics is and is the same for all other manufacturers )
HyperOS actually seems ok to me especially since coming from Pixel 7 Pro, and I love the esim since i travel semi frequently.
However if the Hyper OS interface irritates you at every turn and you are unable to shape your usage around it then seriously consider changing, even more so if the photography bit is not your thing. If you can sell the XM at no loss, that is the best.

Cheers!
Thanks 🙂
I don’t know what I’ll end up doing but if I switch, I’ll let you know what I think 👍
About supported bands for vivo just wait for official presentation and then go to vivo chinese website there you will find the moust detailed specs sheet. At this point it’s just guessing
Should bought oppo in the first place. Why then buy xiaomi doesn’t make sense. Go buy oppo and fill this companies pockets with your money.
How can you please guide me
3rd party launchers dont work on cos either its an android issue
Was’nt GSMarena 😉
If you see the difference in colors that’s fine, Can’t say about brightness these days companies do too much marketing numbers. Will have to see when my device arrives.
That’s true it’s nice to have, but wether you pay the extra price just to have it I don’t know.
My Global Version Xiaomi 15 Ultra 16/512 costs 1300€, while Oppo Find X8 Ultra from HK cost 1040€ for the same 16/512 Spec.
The Xiaomi has wider range of possibilities for videography and also higher quality of you take your time with it.
Can I please know what reason you would buy Oppo for?
I would like to know please.
You’ll be downgrading in a few areas…
Camera hardware,
No 8k or LOG video,
Display quality,
Fingerprint scanner,
Bluetooth and storage tech.
Battery is a plus but then you have to go for China version and if you had done the same with the 15 ultra then it would have been the same (ok 100 less)
Software is a personal taste thing so I can’t advise, I like HyperOS, it’s buttery smooth and hasn’t given me any issues at all… It will only get better as they optimise it for this device.
I would be able to sell the Xiaomi and get the Oppo at no loss too. I just don’t know whether I should. In the end, the Oppo being a CN only model will come with some disadvantages when it comes to using it outside of China. The lack of a (extended) warranty and eSIM also bothers me. I’m just torn.
How many days or weeks have been since you received this phone?
This guide worked for the X7 Ultra, let’s see how the X8 works…

Companies are always giving some deals or other go for brand you want to. Personally I am never going for oppo vivo oneplus much happy with Xiaomi. Day I ditch android will go for apple but not any other android brands.
