I’m not really sure if Xiaomi being Chinese would hurt their reputation.
It will. But the quality of hardware and prices will sway many over looking for a better deal. Few years ago people treated Chinese smartphones the same way in Europe. And now they are dominating the market.

Yes. Its a reason why Samsung lags in the market, and often both Samsung and LG phones are not advertised in that market. Chinese brands on the other hand, you can see plenty in Akihabara.

Really? I visited Seoul last week and googled about buying phones, and the impression I got that tourists avoid buying Korean phones cause of cost and bloatware.
Japan users are more towards apple and those who are not apple goes to samsung. From some of japanese mates i know on the internet. They don’t like China and it’s products much. I may be wrong.
I don’t know why you are downvoted. I mostly heard the same from people i talk to. They are more towards apple, if not apple there are some other but they are not fond of China.

The thing is apple wouldn’t be afraid of Xiaomi, because they operate in the premium segment where Xiaomi provides them with zero competition. Even In India, people who want expensive product tends toward Apple and Xiaomi works in the budget segment. Also, the Japanese buying a China-made product is day dreaming.
so why are they buying iPhones then? lol… china has a lot off crappy quality products but these major brands like Xiaomi and Huawei actually know what quality control is

Manufacturing in china doesn’t make it a chinese product. They have to follow rules only for chinese users. Other international users have their own rules and laws. Chinese government cannot decide or ask for american/others users data from apple because they make it in China. Apple is an American company irrespective of where they manufacture their products.
the brand is not Chinese. You buy the brand not where the product is made from.
It depends… What is the premium segment? If it’s about price, I know a lot of people who switched from iPhone to Xiaomi, even though the price difference was 2-4x, and the reasons weren’t price, but functionality, practicality, etc. If it’s about popularity, I’d argue that at the current market share of iPhones, they are definitely not a premium product in any way. They are a middle-class product, albeit being a premium quality. If it’s about quality, Xiaomi has premium quality too, but it has nothing to do with premium segment. It’s all about price in my mind. The new foldable phones – they might become more of the premium segment at prices like 2-3k. With Apple owning 56% Japan’s mobile phone market, how can such a popular product be called being in a premium segment? What is a premium segment that Apple is in then? To me, premium segment is mostly a combination of price and market share. If everyone owns something, I wouldn’t consider it premium, no matter how good the product is or how expensive it is. Likewise, if it’s cheap as hell, but nobody owns it – that’s not premium either.
it is a made in china product – just like Xiaomi and Huwei… but the problem is a lot of people seem to think everything that is a Chinese Brand is junk, which is not true.. what matters is if the company does good QC or not. Sure generic cheap electronic chinese gadgets will usually be junk but I’ve bought a lot of Xiaomi products which are great – the phone I bought is great, the shaver I bought I like much better than my phillips shaver. Does it mean all Xiaomi products are great? probably not since they have many suppliers – but I heard that their robot vaccum, which is much cheaper than iRobot vaccuums – is superior. Of course we all know Japanese people don’t like Chinese (just look at 20th century history) but I think it is a problem across the world of people thinking that all Chinese branded products are junk, which is not really true.
Chinese = bad exists. But thing that makes everyone frightened is their government. Basically any business in China government has direct control, it is same in other countries too, but here in China they can’t fight back to government. In other countries atleast the corporate can fight with government if something reduces users trust. I know brands like Xiaomi produce decent quality products. But i only bought Xiaomi because they have manufacturing plant here and more than that they stores Indian users data here. So i don’t mind buying Xiaomi products. I am not comfortable giving it to China to be honest. It is same as giving to US or other spying countries for me as an Indian, but chinese government is a bloody dick compared to many other governments around the world so morally i don’t like giving data to them.
More than Xiaomi, government rules can hurt Apple sales in Japan more.
One of the big reasons why iPhone is so popular in Japan are the mobile carriers and their deals, much like in US: you can buy the new iPhone on contract for very cheap. (at first)
In Europe over time people lost interest over these practices (it is still a thing tho just not as popular), appreciating more the freedom of using an unlocked phone.

People in this thread are mostly talking about ethnic prejudice/animosity towards China and Chinese people in Japan, not the “all Chinese electronics is crap” assumption that used to be popular in Europe/America until recently.

I can confirm, 80% of people I know here in Japan uses IPhone, if not,it’s either Samsung or Sony
China will always collect info they can use for the advantage of CCP. That mean that no information on a chinese phone are safe. CCP is on same level as North Korea when it comes to privacy and human rights for people which stand up against CCP. Nokia 7 Plus were sending data to a chinese server this year, so China will collect from non China brands as well.

Iphone made for Americans and other regions doesn’t store data in china even if they are manufactured there. Only hardware is manufactured there. They have only access to the data of Chinese users which they store in China. And it stays outside china. And chinese government have no access to it. Even chinese company like Xiaomi does have their data center and manufacturing unit in India because Indians doesn’t like thier data stored in Chinese servers.
Nokia had no intension of storing data in China either.
if price is what determines “premium segment” then its not too hard for xiaomi to create a luxury sub-brand like they did with redmi (budget alternative) and just sell the same re-branded product for a premium price. Or even better, a premium device with even better specs. This works because they don’t need to kill their own flagship lineup of MI phones, but they can still hit the premium segment.
I have been using the mi6 in Japan for over a year with an internet mobile provider (omv? However they are called) that uses docomo network with no problem whatsoever. Basically the same, if not better, as in Europe, where I previously used it. Granted, haven’t left the Tokyo greater area, but still. So I would call it unusable.
