I want the next great Xiaomi phone release to have a screen no bigger than 5.2″

I mean, am I they only one? I bet I’m not. I love my Redmi Note 5 Pro, but I really believe the ideal size isn’t this big.

I think they’d sell tons of ’em.

Yes! I really don’t get why screen size is constantlygetting bigger. I’m stuck with my Redmi 5a because I refuse to buy a phone any larger. I’m guessing the bigger the phone the bigger the battery (then the ability to make the phone more powerful) but there is definitely a demand for more compact phones. My wife refuses to give up her iPhone 5 for the same reason. Even my (slightly) bigger Redmi 5a looks massive in her hand and she hates it for that.

No, you are definitely not the only one. While I do see why some people want to have big devices, I do not understand how they can ignore all the other people who just want something that can be comfortably used with one hand and can be easily transported.

You’re not the only one. I’m not looking forward to the day my Redmi 3 gives up. 5 inch is a perfect size for me, easily fits the front pocket of my jeans.

I am one of those. My first phone was Redmi 3s prime for the only reason that it was smaller than Redmi note 3. I love that phone. It fit perfectly and one handed usage was a charm. I jumped from it to mi mix 2. The sheer size of the screen baffled me. However, when I hold it in my hand it doesn’t. feel like a huge phone although being an inch taller than the Redmi 3s prime. I think it has to be with the bezels as well and the getting used to it part.

I don’t mind the phones getting bigger if the body size is the same.

I had a somewhat old samsung phone that had a 5″ screen but with giant bezels. Now I have the mi a2 ant it’s just a bit bigger but it has an extra inch of screen. I’m all for it.

Yes, the battery is the main factor here! Compact battery size development is going very slow. Once that’s solved, phones can be a lot smaller in the coming days. Though I’d love bigger screens with no chins!

I really like 5.5 inch phones. I had the Redmi note 3, then upgraded to the mi note 3 both of these phones are very similar and I know they are really solid as I have a tiled floor in my living room. It’s already killed my mates i-phone 5. I’m worried infinity screens and in display fingerprint readers are making phones weaker.

Came from the Redmi 4X (which the size is perfect) and using an Mi A2 Lite because of the almost the same size and that awesome battery life at 7++hrs SoT.

Small phones with better battery life > than sizes.

I will get my Mix 3 next week and I can’t wait. Good to hear that with the size, because that’s one thing I am a little worried about. Funny is that the Mix 3 will replace my “crappy” LG G4 too (man I hate LG) unless you mean Moto G4. Well, regarding the screen size they are both 5,5″ ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Currently I have mi5, had it for 2 years, looking for another xiaomi, that has great battery life and usb c, the only mi that is like that is max 3, which is pretty large.
I just want xiaomi with great battery, at least 4kmah and usb c port, and that its not a phablet.

The inches doesnt matter. What matters is height and the length. I have a 5.5″ with 14.5cms os height (pixel 3) and I really think that the ideal would be with 14CMs of height.

It’s small enough to use one handed
But still big enough for media consumption

And I want people to understand that their opinion is their opinion and they should stop believing it’s the general opinion or that it’s the best/correct opinion.

You saying the they would sell a lot of them literally goes against all the studies these companies make and the reason bigger screen is the norm right now. Or did you think phone companies made bigger screens for no reason? They spend millions on research, and you have your personal opinion…

Bigger screens sell more, businesses go after what sells more, surprise surprise, I just described the entire economy.

    Never going to happen.

The best phone on the market with a screen smaller than 5.8 inches is the Pixel 3 and it retails for 700$. Absolute madness considering I bought my Redmi 4 Prime in early 2017 and it has a 5 inch screen. I don’t like this trend of making screens larger on every iteration and I wish some company would think about us compact users. Even if I think about moving on from my R4P, I look at the current lineup of phones from the main brands and none of them fit my size needs.

The Pixel 3 is actually almost the same physical dimensions, if not slightly less wide:

    Mi 6: 145.17 x 70.49 x 7.45 mm
    Pixel 3: 145.6 x 68.2 x 7.9 mm

The S9 (regular) meanwhile is slightly taller:

    S9: 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5mm

    I like using [phone arena’s comparison tool](https://www.phonearena.com/phones/size#/phones/size/Google-Pixel-3,Xiaomi-Mi-6,Samsung-Galaxy-S9/phones/10932,10491,10716)

Just an FYI if you wanted more options

This is a phone from 2016 that is slowed down by Apple updates. I don’t think it’s a good choice.

What manufacturers should’ve done is start releasing bezeless 16:9 5.5 inch phones, to make the footprints of devices smaller whilst retaining screen size. Instead they opted to keep footprint the same and add screen making weird aspect ratios that aren’t really used much for content. Latter choice was obviously the easier one as they didn’t have to do as much work, and now look where we are.

Totally agree. After switching from Mi 4 (5″) to Mi 6 (5,15″) I keep feeling that it’s less comfortable than it was before. I don’t know how you guys use these 6″ monsters.

    Mi5 master-race?

Seriously though its a great device and the only con is/was battery for me. Just received MIUI update last week, may well be the last this device gets now.

This will be really great to see a Xiaomi / Redmi phone with a small size .

I’m still using my Moto G3 ( which is compact compared to my mi a2 and my brother’s mi max 3). If they release a 5.2″ or at least 5.5″ display smartphone ( with good chipset and big battery ) I will immediately buy it .

Redmi 3 is 140x70mm. Redmi 6 is 148x72mm. Seriously, stop complaining guys.
And Note 6 pro is 158x76mm, that’s not even 2cm x 1cm increase while getting 1,26′ of extra screen.

Because having a large battery is also part of the confort.

I also prefer smaller screens but I love even more and awesome battery life for my smartphone.

I can deal with bigger and bigger screens as long as.it means better battery life.

You’re definitely not the only one. I recently upgraded my Nexus 5 to a Pocophone. I really like the Pocophone, but after a couple of months I still think it’s just too big. It’s awkward to use with one hand. My thumb doesn’t reach all the way across the screen, and I have relatively large hands.

When I was looking what new phone to get, I was aware of this of course, and tried finding a small (5″ or smaller) phone. The reality however is that there are simply no decent options for small phones. All the good phones are 6″ or larger.

Phones don’t *have* to be large because of a big battery. You could just use the space in the other dimension; e.g. make the phone a bit thicker.

I’d much prefer a 5″ phone that is a bit thicker with a good battery, than a very thin phone with shitty battery life or a huge phone.

Same here. I got my Pocophone recently and while it is about 0.5 inches bigger in display size than my old phone the small bezel makes it overall smaller and more handy.

I really don’t see how this is good though. You still have to reach the top and bottom of where your bezel used to be. Make the top and side bezels smaller, keep the chin and screen the same is the perfect way to make a phone “bezelless” and still keep the same usability for me.

A lot of older users appreciate the bigger screen sizes. Much easier on the eyes, plus watching media, playing games on a big phone is a much better experience.

Still using the 4X, don’t see any reason to switch to anything different. Screen size is perfect, battery life is great (easily up to 3-4 days) and does exactly what I expect from a phone.

Not gonna happen. However, the 6.3inch Mi Mix 3 should be the template for the size-limit. Anything bigger is INDEED very impractical.
And that’s coming from someone who owns a Mi Max 3. It’s a good second phone, good for games and media consumption, but I wouldn’t use it as a daily driver. That’s what my RN5Pro is for. It’s large, but still fits all my pockets.

I’ve been a small phone user myself. But ever since I got my mi max, I feel every other phone is just too small now. Even when my mi max gave out, I went for a new mi max 2.

Amen! iPhone 6S shape and size is perfection I think. 4.7inches would be the perfect spot for a bezelless screen. i would’ve bought 6s if it wasn’t running iOS. 🙁 But now companies don’t think of ergonomics while making these shitty ass bricks for phones. Just mindlessly increasing the size. Can’t even scroll the whole screen without moving the phone in your palm 😩😡

Good luck with that, considering how phones are trending now. Being a heavy business user, the Max 3 and it’s fantastic battery has been such a great improvement for my use.

Yeah, that’s the best part about new smartphones.

I remember seeing how big the Nexus 6 was when it came out a couple of years ago and now you can fit a screen of almost the same size on a phone that is physically not much bigger than the 6.

I always like seeing the comparisons in PhoneArena’s size comparison tool.

But doesn’t a bigger screen consume more battery? Seems like they at least partially cancel each other.

Why does everyone care about screen size so much? Physical dimensions are what you want to worry about.

To be more precise, yes I’m talking about physical dimensions. I want to use my phone with one hand without it cramping up. I have large hands, and I can use my Redmi Note 5 with one hand, but it’s not easy.

Then why do you focus on screen size and not the width and height of the device? Because the two do not scale linearly.

I ah a 5.5″ Asus phone, I like that size a lot. My sister has a Mi 8 witch I think is the same size. She did not want bigger than her previous phone (iPhone) but now she would never go back she says. When my phone is dead, I will probably try something bigger, but not over 6″ that’s for sure.

If I had not killed my mi 5i would still be using it. I went with a mi 8se sheet because it’s just about my acceptable phone size. A little smaller or same physical size with bigger screen and I would be happy out

I just honestly just wish anyone would make normal sized phones. Has to trade my OP6T for a Pixel 3 cuz it was just too damn big. If I wanted a tablet, I’d buy one.

Screen size comparisons (somewhat related to overall phone footprints) are no longer reliable due to aspect ratio changes.

The extra space in videos doesn’t usually add much though considering videos are 16:9 and usually ones that are 21:9 or 2:1 are made to be more about aesthetic so why would I watch them on my phone anyway?

I don’t play games on my phone that’d take advantage of a larger aspect ratio or screen.

Screen is 2d factor, battery is 3d factor.

Even if it’s not totally that, when a screen is twice bigger (diagonal), it surface is 2*2=4 times more and it consumes 4 times more. When a battery gets twice bigger (diagonal) it can pack 2*2*2 = 8 times more mha.

That not totally it but you get the idea, screen is 2d actor while battery is 3d. Also your screen will hardly represent more than 50% of your battery consumption (you can check on your battery usage layout in parameters).

Haha, nice try! The 3D of the battery only comes into play if you also increase the depth, i.e. increased thickness. Otherwise the battery should more or less scale with the screen size (I mean more or less because actually the volume percentage of the other electronics like CPU, SIM-card, etc. will indeed decrease). My old Redmi Pro had _only_ a 5.5″ screen and still a 4050mAh battery, so there are definitely ways to accomplish a longevity and smaller sizes. Plus, smaller screen sizes also require considerably less horsepower, particularly in gaming.

That said, of course there are plenty of people who would gladly double their battery life if it meanse having a phone that is a few mm thicker.
