For assisted GPS (A-GPS), Xiaomi uses state owned China Telecom server instead of Google’s as SUPL provider (even on global ROMs)

I always use custom ROMs so my device is fine.
Just checked mine, it was set to the default – switched to the Google settings suggested in the article. Prior to the change I had checked reported accuracy a couple times with a GPS status app and saw good numbers (teens fur visible satellites, 3-4m accuracy) but first time having an issue with it, driving in Boston a couple days ago and it had me on an adjacent road in an unfamiliar area in the dark, in traffic. Not super fun.
Be interesting to see if this change helps.
Thanks! It was set to China on mine., I have switched it over on my Mi8 (xiaomi.eu 10.x rom)
Not tested the difference yet
Hope this works. My mi 5s plus have crap gps since MIUI 10. I can’t use the GPS for navigation, only for ordering uber
Is it me or did the AGPS settings is no longer available?
I’m on MIUI 10.2.2.0 Global.
After last update I did have a little trouble with my GPS, so I’m wondering if it reset itself to China.
But I can’t have access to the A-GPS setting anymore..
Mine doesn’t have the A-GPS setting in the Location section. Is it because I’m using an original Mi Max?
Can you post the full path for others?
I’m on MIUI 10.3 \| 9.1.24 by Xiaomi.eu
Wait and see
I think that’s too old for this. I don’t have the option on my Mi Note 2 either.
AFAIK, yes.
I changed it on my Mix 3 Global version. We’ll see what it does.
Indeed. Dodgy as fuck.
So, how to fix the problem then?
I just got a mi 8 lite here in the stats (USA WHOOT) and this fix my GPS problems. Before I updated to miui 10 (I believe miui 9 was pre installed) I had updated Google maps to it’s most updated version of it’s self and it would not show my location on the map. Infact it wouldn’t show the map at all but it was still able to know my location because it still gave me written directions from where I was to where I wanted to go.
After I updated to miui 10, reverted Google maps to it’s default state and changed location settings to “device only” that’s when Google maps actually work. I thought miui 10 would fix the issue but it didn’t. Turns out the Uber app is having the same issues as Google maps. The map wasn’t showing anything. After changing A-GPS settings to ‘supl.google.maps’ and ‘7276’ Uber and Google maps have been working. Here is my phone’s info for anyone who is in the same boat as me looking for a solution.
Model number: MI 8 Lite
Android version: 8.1.0
Miui version: 10.2.2.0
No, I did not include the quotes. I also tried searching just for “GPS” as well.
This is super interesting, I just followed the instructions and switched it, I haven’t been using my GPS a lot, but I’ve heard many complaining about the inaccurate GPS in spite of Xiaomi marketing the GPS capabilities of their flagships.
Mix 3 Global
Should i leave the same port it had or change it to 7276?
The article has a step by step description of how to do it.
gps.conf is redundant since Android Oreo.
Do you have some news? It is still not possible to change a-GPS settings in the MIUI Global 10.2….
I tried to follow the instructions from the article which said to search for “A-GPS” in the MIUI settings, but nothing comes up except for Location services. I’m using MIUI 10.2.1 global. Any ideas?
You didn’t search with the quotes did you?
Oh good, because I couldn’t find any options like this article mentions on my mi a1
We European and American in the not so distant future will not be allowed to buy Chinese made phones, for national security reasons
I fix Redmi Note 7chinese using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.discipleskies.gpsreset
I guess it’s a safe bet that their Android One phones use Google SUPL?
I use stock android ROMs.
How about PREFERRED MODE and RESET TYPES? Leave alone?
Yeah, but when was the last time the US government massacred a bunch of people? Or disappeared someone for mere opinions? For disappearing people, they’ve done this late last year.
For China it wasn’t Tiananmen Square, it was a year or two ago in Tibet. There’s a reason why Freedom Rankings Tibet is listed as second to last, only surpassed by Syria, a literal war zone. There’s a reason why China ranks 180 out of the 196 or so countries and regions around the world.
The problem is that China has a long history of killing people and arresting people based on the data they gathered. They regularly disappear people they grab on WeChat and other things. GPS is another way they can track people gathering.
Android One phones from Xiaomi (Mi A1, A2 and A2 Lite) should not be affected, as they don’t contain the override in their firmware.
u/cosminul
This is applicable for your question as well.
Hello, I was wondering if you found a way to change the A-GPS settings under the new MIUI update? Since it was reverted back to the china a-gps settings after the update, my gps barely functions properly.
That AGPS works without Google Services is one of the strong points for me. Not giving Google any data is what Xiaomi does best in the Android world.
Europeans started to reject Huawei equipment as the Americans.
There is something behind the scenes for sure
European version. MIUI V10.2.12.0.PFAEUXM Global version
yeah.. same issue. can´t change it.. gps is a hit and miss for me, to be honest. I was hoping that changing this agps config would give me better accuracy.
Thank you thank you. My Google Maps was freezing all the time since a couple of weeks. With this change is working normal again.
They are definitely spying on us big time
Which device is it?
Might depend on device and miui version. I’m on pocophone for reference.
The article explains it, but basically search for _A-GPS_ in settings, and change server address to `supl.google.com`, and then “more” and “save” at the bottom.
Well… Google doesn’t offer their services in China so it makes sense for them to change it.
On Mi 9, I’m unable to find the A-GPS settings. Installing ShortcutMaker didn’t help. When I click on Try for the A-GPS settings, the screen just access that and get back to ShortcutMaker.
Any ideas?
There’s another setting to change, I think it’s the port number as well to 7276
On MIUI it’s under
Settings -> Additional Settings -> Privacy -> Location -> A-GPS settings
The A-GPS settings point is right at the bottom.
Good question.
The image says 7275, the text 7276
I’ll wait, the same way I waited for proof of the spying hardware on electronics manufactured there, a claim by the US government, that was never proven. Ups
No longer possible without root as they removed the option with the latest update. Well played Xiaomi well played.
Using GPS test app.
11 second first time fix on default aettings
4 seconds on Google server.
Not exactly scientific but I’m happy.
Good find thanks.
This particular option is usually hidden in global builds. You’ve to launch the activity manually as shown in the article.
7276, at least according to [this](https://en.miui.com/thread-3466043-2-1.html).
Are you using the European version or the Chinese one?
Either works
Any ideas how to check/change on Mi A1 (stock Android)?
Do you mean search for it? This don’t work for me.
Because Google is controlled by the US government and cannot be trusted? There is always a different point of view.
Still going… Unable to access it at all…
HI, I have a Redmi Note 7, with last global stock rom (global) and the Waze app and anothers, fail to connect to gps.
On Waze, i get the message, “Searching Gps ….”
What can I do ? Thank you. I searched for A-GPS option, but there is no one in the menu.
This looks quite interesting, I was aware of poor accuracy in UK with old mediatek chips and there was a fix. My sat nav appears accurate, though more accuracy is usually better
Xioami.EU ROM is affected as well
Americans sure, Europeans no. We never owned tinfoil hats. Accusing companies of something just because they’re from a certain country without any actual proof of them doing said thing is what the US does.
Edit gps.conf easy as 123
Yeah I sometimes get Google maps redirecting me as if I’m on a sideroad when I’m on the highway. Usually corrects itself quick, but it wasn’t anything that happened on any phone I’ve had before. Not a big deal but I’ll see if this changes anything. A-GPS seems to be more about initial lock rather than continuous tracking but maybe it will still have an effect.
Also for anyone changing the setting, do note that after you change to Google SUPL you have to hit “More” at the bottom of the screen and then “Save” on the menu that pops up, otherwise the settings revert back to default. Could be easy to miss.
AFAIK, Xiaomi changed something in post 10.2 of MIUI so that end users can’t access the A-GPS menu by searching. I’ll take a look into it.
That’s funny I don’t see any lack of Huawei products all over the stores. American propaganda doesn’t affect me, sorry.
Wouldn’t make any difference if it used Google servers. Google would hand everything over to China anyway.
