Every single Xiaomi device dropped from LineageOS because of a DMCA takedown.

What the hell
Nobody sees the irony here? The Chinese steal everything to get to where they are today while ignoring all IP laws but now they are using it against others.
Serious question, why should DMCA be abolished? Isn’t it a way for legitimate copyright theft to be addressed?
I know I’ve filed a DMCA to a web host of a site that was selling my artwork as prints without my permission. The host took it down and it meant I had some level of control.
I understand some people can abuse it but that’s down to the person receiving the request to validate if it’s genuine or not surely? I’m not disagreeing with you btw, just curious to why you think it should be.
Because nowadays bots can file DMCA faster than you can blink. And there is no punishment for filing wrong takedown requests.
Does that mean Xiaomi LO will have no face unlock going forward?
Xiaomi didn’t take down the repo, from the DMCA file that it is [publicly posted](https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2019/08/2019-08-09-SenseTime-5.md), it’s from a company “SenseTime” which has something to do with Face Unlock.
Cool thanks. It’s a 2.5yo low end phone so all good with me!
If Xiaomi or any legal rep. thinks that some part of LineageOS code is using “closed source” code, they may claim it and force LOS to remove the builds and code until reviewed.
Xiaomi frequently ignores GPL and other open source licenses, this may be case of “I used you open source code in my closed source software and now I want you to stop using that code”. But I may be wrong.
I bet there won’t be stolen code and the builds + code will be available again soon.
> that’s down to the person receiving the request to validate if it’s genuine
yeah, that costs a lot of time and money.
most of them, including the big ones like Google and co. just take anything down instantly when they get a DMCA request and then may or may not have an appeal process that may or may not be fast and may or may not be reliable.
if you google “youtube DMCA problems” you’ll see why this sucks for everyone.
in this specific case, Xiaomi has absolutely no ground, legal or otherwise, to request a DMCA takedown on the LineageOS code base… but the devs are still going to take it down just in case the big corporation bully them into oblivion with the power of money, at least until they have written confirmation from a lawyer than they can tell them to go fuck themselves with an open source licence.
Xiaomi should look themselves in the mirror and fix every single thing what’s wrong with MIUI before doing shit like this.
/edit: I understand that it’s not Xiaomis fault, however, how can it exist for other vendors? They don’t use the same method for face unlocking? Couldn’t you just take it out? It looks like Xiaomi has something to do with it.
Misleading title
Surely that’s a Google / YouTube problem though, not a DMCA problem. Google make hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue every year but they’re deliberately choosing to not assign real people but automated systems to save even more money. And it’s those crappy automated systems that some people are abusing with false DMCA requests.
The act itself doesn’t seem to be the issue but the way some companies handle them.
It’s not Xiaomi’s fault

And there is **absolutely** no link between this two news.
Mido dev’ got tired with Mido and went one with Beryllium. LOS *always* says and said that LOS is all about the maintainers. LOS isn’t a team aiming at maintaining all device, it’s people working together on the core, and “freelancer” maintaining specific devices.
So yes, no device is *sure* to be maintained forever. LOS isn’t a company.
this means something only to LineageOS users, everyone who using OS (MiUI) that comes with the phone won’t care about this.
There are two things:
* Maintenance
* Update
Mido won’t get LOS 16 because it’s too much work and maintainer doesn’t want to put much more into it. *But* he stills keep up with security updates. LOS has a guideline to stay “official” one of the rules is to put security patch.
That’s why MIUI 11
But LO does not, which is the problem.
Would someone be able to dumb this down for me?
I have no problem with Miui Global. Obviously I do use a different launcher because I need an app drawer.
Ironic that MIUI is a total iOS ripoff, except it doesn’t work for shit.
Updates for mido keep coming up for me on lineage website so I am confused about there being lineage problems and berrylium?
>One of the devs said this particular file is not used in custom roms anyway so it is fine. It was just one file for one phone which brought down the entire repo.
Kind of. I mean, they might use a lot of patented or stolen stuff without permission \*within\* domestic China – but if they want to operate on a world scale then they have to comply, same as everyone else. Just sayin’.
That’s a bummer, I bought a Mi Mix 2 because I can have LOS on it. I’ll update to the last nightly and see what happens next, hoping the last one is stable enough for some weeks/months.
they should’ve listen to the poll and just do with stock
Fuck the DMCA Act. The shitty act should be abolished.
Happy cake day
Copyright itself should be abolished.
Yeah… Thats what the dev for mido also said before he moved to developing ROMs for Poco F1
Did you even read the [DMCA notices](https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2019/08/2019-08-09-SenseTime-5.md)? First of it’s not Xiaomi directly, it’s Beijing SenseTime Technology Development and it’s about several proprietary_vendor_xiaomi repositories, which they claim contains “SenseTime Mobile Face Unlock SDK Software”, so it doesn’t have to be a false claim.
No thank you Stock android is boring
So, as someone who’s completely new to Xiaomi phones etc, what does this actually mean for the consumer? I was considering buying the Mi 9 SE, but I might just stick with my iPhone.
From what I’ve seen from diffrent posts, it seems like Xiaomi uses a proprietary face unlock presumably licensed by another company. While Xiaomi can use it, ROM makers that copy it cannot so in come the DMCA (not from Xiaomi!) from the face unlock SDK company
Don’t do business in the US, simple.
It’s only temporary, they will be back. That’s what a mod said in LineageOS subreddit.
