From how much I know LCD displays should not consume less power even with if there is a dark picture. But for some reasons it’s says it here.

I dont think LCD will see a battery life benefit. Imo only OLED / AMOLED displays will see an improvement in battery life as the pixels that are black are shut off.

Yes I know that, I just don’t know why it showed me this in battery optimization.

It may be due to the fact that black consumes less power. See in order to produce white on the display, red, green and blue all need to be lit up equally to mix to white. With black that doesnt need to happen so I suppose it still uses *less* power than white but not *no* power as it would on an OLED/AMOLED.

Thus the improvement in battery life may be less than what you would get on an AMOLED display.

I know that lol, was just wondering why would it tell me that dark mode uses less power on an LCD display in battery optimization section.

Nah it consumes the same amount of power
Unlike oled in which each pixel has its own light, in LCD the pixels just manage the colour output and the backlight shines through from behind
Even when viewing pitch black, the bacoght is still shining just that it’s blocked to let minimum light pass through.. so the power consumption is exactly the same

Yep. No need to development a screen capabilities check method (to see if it’s LCD, AMOLED, SUPER AMOLED), if the text is generic.

But, I read on how dark mode can save a negible amount on LCD screens. Mostly because of brightness. Most users find Dark mode easier to read at night, so they set their phones to a reduced brightness. This saves battery. It’s not a direct consequence of the dark mode, but it’s a indirect power saving.

I can say for myself: The high contrast from dark mode has been a blessing for my eyes, and my brightness is always set to low now, unless I’m gaming.

AkHsChUlLy, in an LCD, when a pixel is turned on it blocks light and when it is turned off it let’s light through. That means a fully black screen (with the backlight turned on) consumes slightly more power than a white screen. So in theory light mode will increase your battery life over dark mode, although the difference would be very small and unnoticeable.

It is because the base MIUI/Software, remember MIUI it’s used on multiple phones, so what happened is that they forgot to remove the “consumes less power” flag for the phones with LCD.

Don’t bother changing them to light if you want to save battery though, as I said, the difference is unnoticeable, since the pixels consume almost no power compared to other things in your phone.

I prefer dark mode as well even though I have an LCD screen, but that’s just because i like darker colors and prefer my eyes not burnt.

In practical terms I think my LCD actually consumes more in dark mode. I mean I don’t think the efficiency is any different, but while in dark mode, I have to turn the brightness up higher than regular mode to get the same readability.

No. LCD displays only dim the pixel to make them APPEAR as off but really their ON.

But in AMOLED the pixel is truly OFF and saves battery

It’s actually more likely the opposite. Opposite from OLED, there’s often a slight increase in power consumption to display black instead of white. It’s pretty negligible though.

Dark Mode actually uses slightly more power on an LCD display. LCDs work on aligning the crystals to block or allow certain lights through the display, and to show a black image, or largely black image, it has to consume power to align them all to block the white light coming from the backlight.

Dark on LCD : The display panel showing you Dark Color while still consuming equal amount of power as showing white.

Dark on Amoled: The display panel showing you turned off pixels, just like you turn your light off while you sleep hence its dark when absence of light.

Conclusion, dark mode does absolutely nothing on LCD display in terms of saving battery it might decrease ur battery by a bit cuz the display has to work extra hard to show you black color hence taking more power from your battery juice and also on LCD, you might notice some screen bleeding on the corner of your display while using dark mode. Whites are natural for LCD display than black but on Amoled, putting dark mode on apps, overall UI and dark wallpaper will improve your battery by huge margin. Its exact opposite, dont put on dark mode on LCD unless if you are sensitive to whites.

There you go, even if your phone shows it lowers battery consumption it absolutely doesn’t on LCD. These phone manufacture wanna make you feel good for having their phone so they’ll do whatever they can to make customer satisfied thats why they put the info there even if its only true for Amoled.
    Thats it

No, on the contrary. It actually costs (a very, very little bit) more energy to ‘block’ the backlight from coming through the pixels on LCD’s. (That’s why your gameboy had a blank screen when it’s off 🙂 )

Only dimming the screen will really save you battery.
