Im on Lineage OS with RN7 and I like it better than Pixel E.

Update only if you need the security patches. Most malware problems and stuffs can be avoided with common sense. Don’t download random craps or apks to the phone from shady sites etc. Visit trusted and genuine sites. That’s all. If you are regular user of public wifi networks then it’s better to have atleast a recent security patch.
I’ve been using RN7 (lavender) for year and a half. Tried many custom ROMs and I had the best performance with Havoc OS and Corvus OS.
There are many custom ROMs for RN7 that work better than MIUI. So if you get bored of MIUI or phone gets slow, just try out some custom ROMs.
And stock MIUI 11 worked better for me than MIUI 12.
Ad long as the phone is still running smoothly, it knows how to manage the resources.

ngl MIUI is so annoying as it always leaves at least 1 gig of ram unused and chooses to close youtube videos, facebook comment sections, and incognito tabs instead.

MIUI is super aggressive and shuts everything down in background. Thats why most apps only have problems with MIUI with push notifications not showing etc..

Same here, Note 4, but LOS 16, since based on what I read is that the 17 still have a lot of bugs. And yes PE 10 is terrible for my device 3/32, on idle it only have 30 MB of free RAM, can’t do any multitasking.
Where do you guys get these custom roms from?
I have used a Note 5 ai for quite some time. Install an AOSP based Pixel-centered OS on it. You will never regret when you will see the performance bump

The first time I tried to unlock the bootloader, the unlock tool said that I have to wait 168 hours before I can unlock it.
So I waited 1 week and then unlocked it without any problems.

This is my daily driver, I already asked it on XDA but almost got no response and I didn’t have much time so just install LOS 16 on it. The only bug right now is that sometimes when you open a notification, the app just shows black screen, and I need to swipe it form recent apps and reopen it.
MIUI 12 worked fine at first but now it started lagging. Maybe I consider one of thouse.

You have hentaiOS maybe by ctwoon. That is a hundred times better than pe if im correct. People pay to get their hands on that rom. Made by extremely skilled guys.
Running HavocOS on my Note 6 Pro! HavocOS is definitely one of the better custom roms out there for Xiaomi phones.

LOS is might be at peak at performance and responsiveness but I think it lacks many handful features that PE has over it

Yes gpay does work, I use it. Also PayPal works. Haven’t tried anything else but there shouldn’t be a problem.

Yup, switched to LOS and the performance difference is noticeable. Much responsive and smoother.

On Xiaomi mid-rangers, for whatever reason, the zRAM (compressed memory) fills up as it’s supposed to, but doesn’t decrease much. It eventually gets full and the system starts to lag and stutter as there’s no more space in the zRAM.
You can use an app called RAM Truth to check the state of your memory, including zRAM.
I used to love Miui, until I installed Evolution X for my Mi 9T Pro
It has almost all the Pixel goodies from Pixel phones that I love specially the Pixel launcher.
I remember in 2018, I used to have full resolution images backup feature activated in my RN5 without me doing anything. It was a Pixel-only feature.

Google Feed was not available in my region in normal ROMs but I used the feature in my RN5 without doing anything.
The extra little system tweaks of status bar, navbar, QS tiles many of which are missing in LOS.

Backing up, resetting/unlocking and restoring the entire device. And frequent clean installation when there is major changes in the rom. To be honest OTA in stock rom is comfortable and easy. Backing up apps and data is the painful task. Google backup is incomplete. Even after all that the scenario with magisk and safetynet. Last two times I tried on this phone just few hours later safetynet starts to fail again even after hiding everything and the magisk manager itself. A lot of apps I use have safetynet checking. I am in the middle of whether I should flash custom rom or continue using stock rom. I will just wait for one more official update from Xiaomi, if they didn’t fix any existing issue then I wi just move on to custom rom.
I’ve been meaning to try Ubuntu Touch but my RN7 is my main and only phone. How stable do you think UbT is for a daily driver? Does it have a good battery life?

It’s a custom ROM, so it’s still Android, but with different software on top of it instead of the stock MIUI.
I’m still using Redmi Note 4 with PE.

Never heard of PE. I’ll look it up. I have my daily Note 4 on rooted Miui 9, my backup Note 4 on miui 11.0.2 and my experimenting with OS Note 4 on Revolution Remix. It’s been so long since I have messed with firmware, that I’ve forgotten how to do it. I can’t even figure out why magisk won’t update
