True. I’m not an AOD user, and the difference with colours is only really noticeable when you compare it side by side with AMOLED.
Personally, I really enjoy high refresh rate displays. Even something as simple as reading something while scrolling a bit feels much better to the eyes! Honestly, I don’t believe gaming will really have an advantage, as mobile chips don’t have the oomph to push out 120 FPS in competitive games that actually require it haha, let alone on a midrange device that the IPS LCD leads me to believe.
Sure, watching videos won’t be a difference, but everything else you do will feel much better.

So is it 60hz for normal gaming, regular calls
120hz for high end heavy duty games but for game series.

As another user said, 90% of a phone’s usage is based on scrolling for 95% of the people. 120hz/90hz on a phone screen makes quite a difference in the overall experience of the phone

A tablet is not ‘much’ different from a phone lol. In fact it’s basically the same except for the size difference.

Refresh rates are the same on every screen devices. Touch-screen or not.

I am, for more than 6 months already. That’s why I can say it with confidence.

Only gaming and scrolling(lol) is affected. Go for 90/120hz if you’re into gaming but other than that, I can’t recommend higher than 60hz refresh rate until the technology becomes standard.

Use 90hz/120hz on a phone if possible. At the least for 10 minutes.
    Then tell me about it…

Speak for yourself, I have a 240hz monitor for gaming and I can confirm there are no difference when you’re doing everyday task on a phone using 120hz screen.

Only for scrolling and gaming you can see the effect, which I don’t really care for.

No movies are made at higher than 60fps, most of them are 24fps. Youtube videos don’t go higher than 60fps as well. Pictures, apps and websites does not require fps to read and use.

Sure, keep telling yourself that higher than 60hz screen has practical use besides gaming and scrolling 🙂

I’d like to point out that amoled tech typically has less ghosting and faster pixel response than any IPS tech.

I guess I’d have to give it a proper listen, I thought the Mi 9T sounded okay when I tried it in a store, but that’s not a really good benchmark. And yeah the placement is a bit weird, I guess you could just flip the phone in a worst case scenario? But still pretty unnatural, even if the aren’t much bezels to keep reminding you that the phone is upside down.

Good luck waiting, I’m not sure what can possibly be there on the horizon. Maybe something from Nokia, but I had a shitty enough experience to recommend against their phones given the chance. Gsmarena lists the Pixel 4a as having an IPS screen, but I really wouldn’t bet on that being true.

Yeah, dual front cameras are complete mess. A propos the sound on X2, maybe “terrible” is a strong word, i think it sounds basically the same as mi9t. But still it’s not a dual speaker and what is weird to me is the speaker positioning on the left side, so you basically cover it every time when hold phone horizontally. I have Honor 20 pro and Redmi note 8 pro and speaker is on the right and that’s how it should be imo. By the way, round hole on Honor 20 Pro on the left side of the screen looks just perfect without any artefacts or loosing much useful screen space, it’s basically become unnoticeable and the face unlock works very good too. Not a bad phone in general, especially in camera department, I bought it instead of mi9t after a few days of use exactly because of the amoled intolerance, but turns out magic OS is just not for me.) So just waiting for a decent android phone with a good IPS panel.

Oh man, you know what would go best with OLED tint at an angle?

    CURVED. EDGES.

I was thinking maybe I could tolerate it, but I checked some phones out today and.. just no. The edge shadow no matter what angle you look from is digusting and I can’t believe anyone liked it enough for it to become a trend. Or maybe no one does and manufacturers just shoved it down our throats anyway just like they took the headphone jack.

But I think I’ve given up on the idea of getting IPS for my next phone. The current trend with punching holes and rounding corners makes them look even worse with some weird tinting around the edges and camera. I have considered the Poco X2 (or K30, same thing basically) though because 120Hz and failry solid overall, but so far they’re still not for sale around me. What’s that about terrible sound?

Microled couldn’t come sooner. Hopefully phones won’t be buttonless, portless glass slabs by then.

Totally agreed, not to mention PWM and terrible tint from different viewing angles. Pure marketing. Bad IPS panel most of the time relates to a poor quality control, i mean look at the Ipad or LG G7 thinq panels – they’re gorgeous. With Amoled – technology itself is full of flaws and It’s a facts, I’m surprised how many just ignoring that. I personally consided about switching to redmi k30 5g, but that stupid punch holes and terrible sound kinda deal breaker at the moment. It is also interesting what microled technology from Apple would look like in comparison to the Amoled.

In my opinion AMOLED is a little overrated. LCD screens have more accurate colors while AMOLED has ”nicer” colors.

But don’t forget there are good and bad AMOLED and LCD screens.

In the end both has their pros and cons.

Side effects : yes .. a greenish tone in low brightness (not so much but noticeable), no users reported damage to their screen as long as you go for 75hz (it can go ti 82Hz)

A tablet is much different from a phone. Especially an apple product. Maybe it is fine for you, but I notice a massive difference and can not switch back to 60hz on my poco x2
A friend of mine with his 90hz OnePlus 7 pro can not shift back to 60hz as well

I’m not using it because I don’t use my phone often so I prefer have a better battery life, even if the change is small. + I didn’t see a big difference between 60 and 74hz.

for the people who used it I didn’t heard anybody complaining about they’re screen broken after using the overclock. my personal thought is that yes is damage a little more the screen that usual, but not enough to be perceptible. screen keep working years and years after, they get broken by a fall before they can died of usage, so a overlclock will probably not change this behaviour, that like a normal screen you’ll change your phone or broke the display with a fall before it can die because of the usage

Personally maybe not. It had the same chipset and the notch looks very mediocre imo…
But if you’re a fan of amoled, then go for it, it’s not a bad phone..
I would still go for the poco x2, because I absolutely adore the 120hz display… And this display is better than my previous xiaomi redmi note 5 pro, which on paper has the same specs.
It’s all about preference. The market is saturating and you have a lot of options nowadays

do you think the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite is better than the Pocophone x2.
Xiaomi mi note 10 lite has a 60hz amoled screen but does not have expansion by sd card

Once you go 120/144hz you never go back. Just saying.

It’s a very good phone, and I feel that it’s worth every penny till the 23,000 rupees (Indian currency) mark. The only disadvantage so far that I see is that it doesn’t have an amoled display, and I personally am not the biggest fan of the notch. Other than that the 120hz screen, the beautiful IPS display, and it’s quick AF charging more than makes up for it.
    Go for it!

Hard to justify 120 if it drains the battery. At the end of the day a phone is useless if the battery is dead. That’s the main reason I’ve never got a Pixel phone, terrible battery

That depends. Personally, I would rather have amoled instead of high refresh LCD. I dont really see the benefit (yet) and it has a negative effect on battery life. Though I can imagine the benefit if you’re a mobile gamer

120hz lcd. I don’t have any problem with LCD displays. I have used both amoled and lcd, and doesn’t mind both. I want smooth scrolling and a better ui performance anyday.

    **Amoled**

Due to battery and amoled screens are known and wayyy better at saving battery especially when you have a dark wallpaper cuz less pixels are being projected.

yes, mix 3 was the flagship/innovative phone of Xiaomi, to show what they can do, but here we are 2 years later and no update.

for miui honestly I prefer miui 11 for now. on miui I could do 1 lot of customisations with a root apps. now I can change nothing and the 2 most frustrating things for me is the incostitency when disabling animation, and the non efficient control center (which can be disable but the classic one don’t work anymore with my tweaks so it’s still far from goodness of the customisations I was able to get. if the next beta update brick my phone I’ll reflash miui 11

You should not baby anything, you should not worry about battery, you should not notice.lag after the phone warranty expires. But here we are. I am not giving advice for what products should be. I am giving advice on what products are in this consumerist driven economy.

3 years is if OP got his phone at release and just started noticing burn in. And even that would still be pretty pathetic. Especially as phones are expected to last longer and longer.

And my bigger point was the S8 display panel isn’t terribly outdated. I’ve seen nothing to indicate that the S10 or S20 have been seriously improved in that regard. You always hear about brightness, accuracy, refresh rate, but the last time Samsung bragged about lifespan was probably with Diamond Pentile introduced in the S4.

Basically all OLED phones I’ve seen that had some good use on them have been noticeably worn. My S3, though old, looked like shit after a year and a half and I never abused it. I’ve seen people complain about burn in that happened within months. Look at how Jerryrigeverything’s S8 looked like by the time he replaced it. You shouldn’t need to baby a phone for it to last.

Amoled. IPS drains more battery with the back light as it can’t turn off pixels. Add 120Hz to that and prepare to have a pretty bad battery life

What is the average lifespan of your phone. S8 is available since April 2017.. that is a 3 years old phone.
On the other hand…. I had an s8, no burn in. I think you are using the phone wrong. Excess heat, excess light, will cause your phone to degrade when it comes to the screen burn in. So are you keeping your phone in direct sunlight? Are you keeping your phone warm or hot all the time? If yes then that is your fault. Take care of your things and they will last. Use them like trash and a.new phone can become damaged in Leeds than a year.

My brother had an iPhone, kept it on the dashboard all the time, the screen is shit now and it was an ips… IT al comes down to knowing your strengths and your weaknesses… Even with the burn in. I see no disadvantage with an AMOLED.

Amoled. You can’t beat the way colors look on an OLED. Plus always on display is very convenient. More Hz displays is more of a pc or laptop thing. On phones it’s not as useful and doesn’t change much.

Honestly the Mix 3 5G is to this day the best value phone I’ve ever used. I got it for €250 which was a bargain but the lack of software updates is disappointing to say the least. One can only hope they skip MIUI 11 and update it to 12 in the future.

Yes this is 1990 where you need to spend & own a product to form an opinion and not 2020 where we got reviewers left and right telling you that the LCD panel used on the SE 2020 isn’t good or that the 1821mAh battery gives you a measly 3h SoT. I did plan to buy one to replace my updateless Mix 3 5G but I’d rather stick with my SAMOLED screen for now.

I’d just pick a solid IPS display in general. No Pentile, no screen degradation (usually, unless they fuck it up and it starts ghosting after a while), better uniformity. Unfortunately a good IPS screen in combination with a good phone just doesn’t really exist anymore. The Poco X2 seems like one of the better ones, but still pretty midrange.

But the Galaxy S8 isn’t even all that old. I keep hearing people repeat “OLED doesn’t burn in anymore, that’s an old OLED thing” any time a new phone would come out, probably since the S5, and yet a year or so later there’s people talking about how their screen burned in.

Cycling graphics does help and I’m sure moving away from black status bar and navigation buttons did a lot to prevent it as well, but in general I’ve just not seen significant improvements in OLED lifespan. They still degrade rapidly and there’s a good chance you’ll see burn in way before the 3 year mark.

For a TV or computer monitor I could understand it but in a phone it seems excessive, I don’t think I’d ever notice 120hz but I’m not someone who uses the office for video content or gaming

It rarely happens… This is a problem old amoleds had. And in the lifetime of 2-3 years of your phone is not that probable to happen.

Ips screens can get burn one but you have to keep it on full blast for. Months at a time to get anything.

Cycled graphics on AMOLED prevent burn ins. That means to change the layout from now and then.

120hz IPS screen, because most of all the apps require scrolling, like Instagram, whatsapp and even the home screen, notification bar, etc… I own a poco x2 and it’s a charm using the 120 hz display.

60hz AMOLED, drains less battery from low hz and true blacks, better blacks, better angles, better colors
120hz ips, stai s a lot.more.battery from the fact that it is always on even when the screen is black or.msotly black, has more hz so it needs more gpu and cpu and ram to handle the high refresh rate. Blacks are dark grey, contrast is washed out, colors are washed out.

And your eyes cannot really perceive a real noticeable difference between 60 and 120hz. I mean. It is there but at what cost? Lower phone performance, worse screen image experience, worse battery life. The benefit of 120hz does not compete with the drawbacks.

120Hz on a phone would have no benefit besides having smoother scrolling. Currently there’s pretty much no 120Hz content besides games and maybe some demo videos, and 120Hz in gaming is no small feat even for PCs.

My laptop-version RTX 2060 has a lot of trouble maintaining 144Hz at 1080p with maxed graphics, even with the power cord connected to the wall. A phone would need to dial down graphics a lot to maintain 120Hz and the battery would run out of charge pretty fast.

Nah, I think every company has its plans and strategies written for the next 10 years. People just need to understand that Apple is not a trendsetter, in fact they implement some functions way later than Android based manufacturers and present them as inovations.

He just meant that the big manufacturers would follow Apple’s choice. If firms like OnePlus use 120Hz display, the big mainstrean manufacturers (Samsung, Apple, …) wouldn’t really mind. But if Apple does it, Samsung and co will follow along and eventually everyone will use it.

If I’m going to use that phone for 2-3 years then I prefer the 120hz IPS screen. I hate AMOLED screen phones after 1 year of use since everytime I scroll there’s a black smudge that follows the scrolling.

don’t forget the burn in issue that all Amoled screen phones eventually get.

If you play FPS games, 120hz make sense.

60hz Amoled. Although 120hz makes UI(scrolling) and playing high FPS-supported games feel smooth. For everything else you use the phone for, its practically useless.

Not a fan of high refresh rate. Battery is my main concern although not so much but it’s definitely eating more with 120Hz. If the hardware specs is already good enough, then I don’t really need fast scrolling experience. Gaming wise, well, 60 FPS is more than enough for a phone
