To each his own, then. I sure don’t want my data with some ching chongs!
I don’t say it doesn’t matter at all it’s just not that important to me knowing that I have no real disadvantage if they collect my data to show me some better ads I don’t look at anyways

not much really if you’re not from China, but if you’re politically affiliated you surely (already) are on some list…
I would much prefer my dad to go to google then China, I trust what Google will do with AI much more than I trust what China will do.
That’s a dumb ass question. Bro Apple already made it extremely clear that they will not share data with the US government, and the only reason google shares data is because of PRISM, which doesn’t give them a choice. Shut the fuck up if you don’t know what you’re talking about.
What about the US government??
Soviets didn’t Invent the construct of Whataboutism, it just get its current era semantic description around that time.
Its like that trope many have with German words which have no equivalent English or other language equivalents. Well that doesn’t mean Humans for 5000 years Literally didn’t even know of those feelings/emotions while only the Germans did. It doesn’t work like that.
People already had an equivalent of Whataboutism long before Soviets and Americans whipped each other silly with it during Cold War.
Not good. There are many variants tho but each one of it is underwhelming. So, deciding to hang on to the stock one.
duckduckgo
I believe that Android One (in Mi A1, at least) doesn’t have any default browser? I’ve always used Chrome.
I know that Chrome sends data, but… Is it at least not as concerning as if I were using the Xiaomi’s browsers (Pro or Mint)?
Just as Google does it
I mean, because they are worrying about some people, doesn’t mean you need to do the same. China is a complicated country, people live there differently, you could say it’s an even worse lifestyle and government, yet, it’s their problem. I personally don’t care about what they do in China and I’m using Brave.
I got to say that I kinda agree with you, in this topic
Big oof but I never used it though, I used chrome at the beginning and then Mozilla
But consider this, if my password is lost with billions of other passwords in a big database, really the risk of someone doing something personal against me is very very low. Other thing if only my password is taken, the situation is different, so i am not scared.
Its something inevitable this from happening. If anything leaks, we just have to change passwords, and live our lifes as always.
I’m actually surprised it’s only in their own browser (which I have never used). While I do use a Xiaomi phone, I was – and still am – sure that China knows everything about me.
Laughs in chrome. Lol
Same here. PE+ on whyred. Very smooth. Plus the gcam.
This article is purely clickbait. It does the exact same thing that ALL companies do (and Google probably collects even more data), but the article treats it like it’s the only one.
Such a dumb response. 99.9% of the people don’t do custom roms, which is why this actually matters. Not for the small handful of people like you.

I do not use the default browser either. I’m currently using Brave but I don’t trust it either. Custom ROMs are tricky with the camera and that’s the only thing holding me back. Still waiting for a decent GCam for my Mi 9 lite.
Adb tools work without unlocking bootloader.
Absolutely. When someone provides you with a “default” browser, they’re up to no good. I just happened to flash a custom ROM a few days ago, and then seeing this, I couldn’t be happier I did. Just use a custom ROM and Firefox.
At least they mentioned it’s only in their browser
Are you sure it’s “become the property” and not “Google acquires a \[…\] license”?
Because it’s two completely different things.
Edit:
“11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content **you give Google a** perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive **license** to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. **This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services** and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.”
License and Copyright are two *completely different* things.
Stating reality to counter bad attribution is how whataboutism started in the first place. That’s why the USSR started it when they countered everything bad they did by saying “and you are lynching negroes” to the US
Well I guess it might be different for your device, In Xiaomi roms at least for my device, they have vendor and firmware files that have been extracted and must be flashed alongside a custom rom if not using OSS, these files aren’t open source except for a few small selection of Qualcomm audio and wlan codes. There are a few Xiaomi system apps that get installed with using these files I can’t recall the names off the top of my head since all of the good roms don’t use Xiaomi vendor firmware anymore including pixel experience.
OSS is a custom vendor firmware that was developed recently for my device and is completely open source and wasn’t developed by Xiaomi and as such custom rom Devs have jumped on it and is quickly being implemented on all roms.
It’s not your fault you were raised that way.
Then I just don’t get our conversation at all. You said:
>You don’t know what’s hidden in their vendor firmware files, if you really want that piece of mind use a rom with OSS.
What exactly did you mean?
Well it’s anonymous sent data so to me it doesn’t matter to if they know that someone visited some weird website and even if they knew it was me (or my IP) i wouldn’t worry as well because I know they are just using it to show more relevant ads and that doesn’t concern me…
I think people should definitely worry about passwords and security rather than about data collection of big companies, because if hackers steal your passwords etc. They can harm you, and personalized ads don’t harm anyone really.
Also, if you really think google isn’t as bad you don’t know what times we’re living in…
Why would anyone use default Chinese browser?
Is about what do we call privacy, and where we start caring about. I don’t have anything to hide in internet.
If someone cares about it, I am open to share most of the things I do in internet. Probably everything except my passwords
I’m sorry your parents failed to raise you like a proper human capable of empathy.
Must suck being raised by apes.

nice!
Wow, just… Wow.
> Xiaomi said, “The research claims are untrue,”
and
> When Forbes provided Xiaomi with a video made by Cirlig showing how his Google search for “porn” and a visit to the site PornHub were sent to remote servers, even when in incognito mode, the company spokesperson continued to deny that the information was being recorded. “This video shows the collection of anonymous browsing data, which is one of the most common solutions adopted by internet companies to improve the overall browser product experience through analyzing non-personally identifiable information,” they added.
“We’re not doing that. And everyone does that, so it’s OK that we do that”.
Unfortunately MIUI still makes several calls to Xiaomi servers.
I bet this still happens on the Mi 10 Pro too…
That’s interesting and a thing to keep in mind. Thanks
Huh, so Xiaomi can use Qualcomm Snapdragons but aren’t allowed access to Qualcomm firmware code? Is that what you’re saying?
E: Also where did mention firmware? They may or may not have access maybe you should link a source, Xiaomi definitely has access to Qualcomm vendor code though.
I repeat, if public and available they have to by law, no ones disagreeing with that, I don’t know what you get out of saying what is so obvious and well-known.
Oddly enough, I waited no time on my Pocophone F1
You guys are thinking like you are one of the most important people in the world… Like CCP cares what a random redditor who can do nothing to them think.
What an incredibly self centred world-view. Not to mention that I’ve got friends currently locked up in China. You aren’t even worth the 50mao the CCP may have paid you to post that.
Stating reality to counter bad attribution is not whataboutism, resorting to whataboutism on those situations is worse than actual whataboutism.
If you drink water and then accuse someone else of being hydrated, one can’t just use the Slogan of Whataboutism to get across that criticism, it would be idiotic.
Your statement here would be valid if of the half dozen proper big scale OEMs we have globally and list their standard practices and do apples to apples (no pun) and if it turned out only 1 company is the gross outlier THEN your critique using term whataboutism would be valid.
I repeat, almost every custom ROM has its own Github repo. You are free to look through the code and compile it yourself.
Xiaomi doesn’t have access to their firmware code either, infact it’s illegal to export that code outside the US (Qualcomm) / UK (ARM) or any NATO Partner country.
What about US Government??
Maybe you should have clarified what you meant by official rom as official in custom roms doesn’t mean much. Unofficial, official, passing safetynet doesn’t matter if it’s made available public for free they must have a repository look up GPL. Never said Qualcomm is Chinese, I said Xiaomi use parts of Qualcomm vendor files in their software and that’s open source and available on GitHub, same as the kernel.
Google is absolutely not collecting detailed browsing data on every site you visit and sending it back basically in plain text.
People have gotten so cynical about privacy that they can’t see when something is actually serious or not.
Where did I say it was?
Grass is green
Sky is blue
This makes no sense though. The information can be property of Google. If I buy something through Chrome it’s not Google’s property.
A thing, and information about a thing, are different things.
Who actually wears shoes when stomping on ant-hills? Nothing to worry about unless you’re covered in honey!
Wrong. Apple doesn’t use data to direct ads. Also the big difference is that google and apple aren’t giving your data to the CCP.
Firefox?
Not possible since they require you to ask for a bootloader unlock key and you need to wait like a 15/30 days but I’ve seen even more time.
I waited 15 days with the stock xiaomi rom, they’ll inevitably get something from you.
I’m ok with that for a cheap semi-powerful device.
Letters can get lost in the mail, I prefer to drive hundreds of miles to show someone a meme in person.
To everyone saying “google and apple are doing the same thing”, google and apple aren’t supplying that data to the CCP. It’s that simple.
I do not give a hoot.
The difference is that the CCP doesn’t have access to apple and google’s data.
Do you not care about your privacy!?
Do you have custom rom installed right after you bought your phone?
Do you not care about your privacy!?
I’m talking about official custom ROMs (the ones that have passed SafetyNet, well supported and have OTA updates). And yes, Qualcomm isn’t Chinese. It’s Code Aurora. The source code is also available. ROM developers use it too but AOSP is more stable and tested. Vendor firmware is nothing more than a passive layer that provides hardware compatibility.
Tor.
Qualcomm isn’t Chinese, neither is ARM…
Wow. It blew up a bit. Reading all the comments I’m glad most of you guys are aware of the problem here. Yes. Everyone does it. Google, Facebook, Xiaomi etc. but the bigger concern here was (from the article) how easy it was to decrypt the data being sent, right? OnePlus was accused recently for sending data to tencent but they addressed it and fixed it (or silenced the accuser lol idk). But Xiaomi here isn’t even addressing it.
Time to move to Custom Firmware
Pretty sure they don’t, eu.miui does but Xiaomi only release bits and pieces of Qualcomm open source vendor files and kernel codes, but I’d like to be proved wrong on that.
Yeah but it’s outdated and not customized for certain phones and I’d like to not make mine bootloop
Research team who find it..payed by Huawei 😂😂😂
So if I make a song and upload it to Soundcloud through chrome, they own it? Tried googling your clause can’t find anything
It’ll take a couple of months to get stable ROMs for a device. You’ll need a wait a bit for the RN 9 series!
You can use Xiaomi.eu ROMs. They are based on the Chinese but debloated, deodexed and do not include unwanted software.
Almost every official ROM has its Github repository where you can browse the code and even recompile it yourself.
Totally agree there with you. Every Xiaomi app shows a huge banner about their data collection, so i really wonder whats the big buzz its about. If you dont agree with the data collection of an app then dont use it.
Who uses Mi Browser when Google Chrome is included by default. And I’m sure Google also does this for their malware protection or data saving but they let you disable it in settings
Who actually stays inside because of COVID19? Nothing to worry about unless you’re old!
now use mi browser on custom rom
But they don’t share it with a fascist ethnostate with a history of using big data to commit ethnic cleansing. Worst thing Google is going to do is use my browsing data to try and sell me shit. The data Xiaomi shares with the CCP will be used to negatively affect the lives of millions.
I mean, you do get a pop up that takes a good portion of the screen telling you about the data collection and you aren’t forced to accept and use the app anyways. I’ve been using the stock ROM (Global) for like 2 months before deciding to unlock the bootloader and use something else. Now I’m on official nightly MIUI 12 builds and honestly I feel like the data collection is worse on Global.
I did monitor the traffic while on Global and I did make a post here about Xiaomi Service Framework sending packets to a server in Singapore (which is mentioned in the article above) every time you opened an app or used the Recents menu. I don’t notice that on the dev build I’m currently using. It might be that it has less bloat because it’s a dev build (many Xiaomi apps are missing here, including the calculator app) but still I don’t notice anything strange happening.
I closed all apps running in the background and started monitoring and all I got was Mi Account (which I need to use in order to get updates), Play Services and WhatsApp (I got a message while monitoring, hence why it detected it), literally nothing else popped up. On Global, other than Play Services, Play Store and Google every now and then there were like 15 packets sent by XSF every time I went to home screen and back into the app, also, Facebook Services popped up every 2-3 minutes (which are in fact built into the OS, if you want them removed you need to use the Debloat Tool). The interesting thing about the XSF is that there were multiple IP adresses so I guess it was more than one server. The app that I used claimed that whatever was sent didn’t contain any actual data, or perhaps it didn’t contain any data it could read.
Actually they push their own browser through updates that change it as default browser. I had to undo it several times.
There is a wiki on this subreddit’s sidebar for debloating instructions. I haven’t tried yet.
Well, the research shows that Google collect meta-data. Like, how many times is the browser used. Xiaomi collects that too. But also which sites you use. And it sends it unencrypted which is basic security stuff 101. I am a big Xiaomi fan but this is plain incompetence.
Edit: OK small edit is in place. Xiaomi released a statement where they openly explain everything. I am actually leaning towards believing them more.

Are you preffering to pay for webbrowsers and all software stuff (plugins, websites, etc.) that You use everyday? That’s work of some people or companies and they spend time and money to make this
I truly hope it’s sarcastic
You don’t say!
Anyone surprised?
Why use a phone then? Post letters.
“You grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
It’s still your content but FB can pretty much do what they want with it like use it in marketing campaigns for example.
Move along, nothing to see here.
That is probably a phrase what an agent would say if he is just zapping around and watching what a random is doing on his phone right now.
I think you should ask yourself what could they do besides targeted ads and what could be imaginable.
Now you just need to desolder all connections to microphones, speakers and cameras and you should be feeling much better. If you want to feel great disable cellular and wireless when not needed. I think you shouldn’t feel too well without imagining what is possible beneath the software layer.
I think that is the best question you could ask. What could they do with all your data? I don’t think we get it at all what they could do with all our data and that is kind of unsettling.
I mean if Snowden suggests cutting the cables to all microphones, speakers and cameras and only enabling cellular and wireless connections when needed it is clear closed source software is only part of the issue and it is much deeper rooted than we could imagine.
Nice example of whataboutism
No I think they track data as much.
Do you need to wait the vendor to unlock the bootloader?
Thank you. Will give a try once my 9s arrives. Definitely OSS would be way better than vendor firmware in terms of privacy.
Man I feel so good removing Xiaomi apps from my phone the day I got my 9T Pro.
**Xiaomi Devices Found Tracking And Recording Browsing Data Of Millions**
REAL SHIT
**Xiaomi records all the search queries and items viewed on its default browser (Mi Browser Pro)**
I sleep
So what do I have to unbloat on my mi 9t to stop it?
They don’t and it has a lot of sense
> It’s one of the reasons why their products are cheaper than most.
So do you think that Google and Apple doesn’t track it’s user’s activities?
1. Luckily no one uses the Xiaomi Browsers because they’re shit
2. google and co are not acting any different for sure
You don’t know what’s hidden in their vendor firmware files, if you really want that piece of mind use a rom with OSS.
The same as Facebook, idk if they’ve changed it but every picture you upload on FB becomes their property too.
Yes
Does that also include EU version of MIUI?
Lol. Why are you guys surprised? It’s one of the reasons why their products are cheaper than most.
And Google don’t do that in Chrome browser…
If you need help you can always post threads asking for help
>I’m running pixel experience on mine and it’s flawless. I tried going back and installed miui EU rom for a bit. Still found myself coming back to this one.
Is it too difficult to install these ROMs?
My Note 9s will arrive in a week so I can try that out but I’m a bit afraid to not brick the phone.
I’ve seen tons of requests in my company’s logs requesting private URLs all the time, not surprising.
More stable than Xiaomi’s that’s for sure.
What’s your experience with custom ROMs on Xiaomi devices? Are they stable?
*LAUGH’S IN CUSTOM ROM*
love there hardware but I don’t trust th software one bit
