God damn, is this legitimate? I was wondering how long it’d take them to release one without even a pop up camera, and I guess just like the with every other model these past few years – they have the technology and merely nerf new releases so they can increment development. That thing looks market ready too, which makes it difficult to get the K20 Pro even though I need a new phone.

Interesting. Could this be the Poco F2 then? Seems atypical though to leak something this substantial for an upcoming phone. I don’t understand Xiaomi’s strategy here, like right before giving people access to the 9T Pro on a global level, they release this teaser, with a clearly superior setup.

I thought this tech was a year or two away. Are we sure the video is legit?

I think we just found my next phone if this is a real thing. I was thinking abut the k20 but if this is the next pocophone I will wait for that.

I think Poco will continue to not have wireless charging and NFC, but this type of a drastic change in display will be worth waiting for. Going from F1 to F2 will feel like a drastic change unlike the samsung galaxy series where it was just the same design every day.

Of course this is not new pocophone. Pocophone uses cheaper solution than this one. This is either fake or some premium device like mix4.

~~I’m not much confident this is real. It could simply be a K20 Pro with camera being removed with special effects. Also, the fact that the video is 360p and weirdly sped up certainly doesn’t help the credibility. All the users here thinking it’s real are just being delusional. The technology is there, but not completely. They are just increasing the hype for it a day after the news about their hidden camera patent simply for marketing purposes, because beating Samsung at something is good advertisement. However, the Oppo leak seems real instead.~~

    Edit:

In the 1080p version of the video linked in the comment below clearly shows the camera, so, it is indeed real. I definitely want to know how this works, I’m very curious now. It also seems to be working better than the Oppo version. It seems the approach is different than what we think: the camera is not really behind the display, but still in a notch. It is like the camera gets moved under the hole only when needed, otherwise a piece of display is moved there to fill the screen. I hope it’s not the case, but I think it’s a sort of motorized solution. Oppo version instead seems like a real camera behind the full uncut display, hence the difference of quality between Oppo and Xiaomi.

I like how everyone is like this legit? If you actually look back the last couple of years, all of the break through on mobile hardware are lead by Chinese companies. And they effective push the industry forward by attempting many many new things.

Pretty sure it’s easier, when entering photo mode the system will give a different resolution to the app and it will adapt the image to be placed under the cam leaving the upper part unused.

edit: thinking about it they could also switch off those pixel as they did to change notches shape in the past(mi9 i think)

I really hope they release this like 1 day after the iphone and poke fun at their “futuristic, innovative notch design”

Let’s be honest very little phones have pop up cameras. So if anyone wanted to spy it would be a thing already. Making it under the screen would change nothing.

Yeah, like 90% probabilities that this will be used in Mi Mix 4… My question is: what would be the next thing for mi mix 5 when you have already solved the screen issue?

Amount of choices isn’t the problem but the devices you use for decision making, or, given the case, the absence of decision making devices.

Maybe? I mean, Poco F1 have IR scanner which is pretty new at that time (but no NFC and wireless charging).

But who knows, let’s see what the leaks got.

Nah, not so long ago we got transparent display technology. So that part of the display is transparent and there is a camera behind it, when they show black colour, its transparent almost like a glass, of course you gonna lose some light because there still some led pixels in it, but I think they fixing it with more light sensitive sensor and software. You will see camera module when screen will be turned off or just black background, because that part of the display is transparent, and also you will probably lose some screen brightness in that area, because transparent displays are not so bright. You cant use front camera when pixels are glowing on top of that camera, so they made a black strip in camera app as you can see

So there is no magic at all, they just putting all the technologies display manufacturers showed us at last and previous year expos

Thats crazy how technology I couldn’t believe a year ago will be used in million devices next year, same I was thinking about in-display fingerprint scanners few years ago, now you can see them in mid-range 300$ phones. Now they can put different camera modules under display to properly scan our face

If I get the Mi Mix 4 I’ll be keeping it for at least 3 years anyhow, so won’t be concerned with any other phone until Q4 2022, but hey technology moves forward so they will find something to make Mi Mix 5 “better” than Mi Mix 4.

No, chinese sources already says this not gonna be used in 2019(when mix 4 will be released), only in 2020. As we know, mix 4 will probably be in september. To sell something in september, you need to start mass producing it in august. To mass produce something in august, you need to have 100% ready and working prototypes in july, and fully accepted technologies, plans, manufacturers, contracts in june, and june is already started. No way this technology will be implemented un this year phone, because mi mix 4 ideas, concepts, contracts with manufacturers was probably already made in the begining of this year. Most logic thing for mix 4 I see is motorized camera, but one which doesnt have any problems first generations was having.

I look at this and think “what is left for apple when they’re still using notch phones?”

IIRC now their only growth comes from services…..which only grow because of iphone users trying them. If those users switch then what?

    >inb4 not gonna happen

Thats exactly what happened to apple macs in the 90’s when suddenly all the cool new stuff was on PC. And apple almost went bankrupt back then.

It is great I can tell you that but its more expensive to build than a small motorized module let alone this screen tech that requires little assembly and has afaik no movable parts.

Thing is this tech would be far cheaper to mass produce than mechanical cameras so eventually it will be the standard, and mechanical cameras will be remembered as that “thing” that was trendy for a while.

The problem is now privacy, and my Mix3 has the advantage that the selfie cam cant be used if I dont slide it up manually. Motor cameras well you can always block them with tape, but this underscreen thing? how do you even know if its not recording you all the time?

I feel Apple has stopped innovating at this point and are no longer world leaders in mobile or any field, just playing catch-up.
They do have a much better market position than in the 90s but if they don’t get their shit together quick that will slowly begin to errode away.
And there’s no more Steve to save them 🙁

Thing apple was on top of the world during the 80’s and even early 90’s, things went to shit really fast after that because the PC kept launching new stuff every month and macs were getting stale. Right now ios has been lagging behind android in terms of OS features for a while now, much like windows surpassed macOS with NT in 1993.

Don’t forget the cost of the OLED screen, which is needed for this tech to work. Still they’re going down in price, witness the K20 Pro.

The budget, non-underscreen camera crowd will stick to the teardrop notch.

On Android, this under screen camera would totally kill all notched phones. On iPhone, Face ID is vastly superior to the regular camera face recognition on Android phones, so that will probably be there to stay. Unless Apple can hide all the tech in the notch under the screen? Woah…
