This happens when I connect them with USB C on both ends. And doesn’t even connect in MTP mode. Same situation as this – https://twitter.com/mcwm/status/837003695330115590
Any solutions other than using USB C to USB A cable and then connecting it via dongle?
Edit : Now that the battery of my phone is down to 54%, it works as intended. While posting, the phone’s battery was at 90% but my MacBook still had more at 96%. That time I wasn’t even getting that USB for charging notification and was not even able to transfer files using MTP.
Can you select a different connection mode from the notifications?
That notification isn’t even appearing.
I’m a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

IIRC this is a “feature” on all usb C devices.
I think you have to plug one end in before the other to control which charges which. Try the USB in the laptop, then the phone, or the opposite if that’s what you’ve been doing
You can try to change the USB configuration in the developer settings menu
Tried that. Had no effect.
I have a Mate 9 Pro and I get option to “Charge Only” or ” Charge other device”.
It may not appear if the Mac doesn’t have the right drivers. To use MTP you need the godawful Android program for Mac or another third party device. Without that, the Mac won’t see the phone I believe and so the default is to charge. My Nexus 5X does the same, but it can barely charge my MacBook Pro 15″
If you have dev mode off and no Android software, I don’t believe you see the menu is what I was trying to say
I don’t know why you’re being down voted, but this was explicitly mentioned when the first USB c phones arrived.
Even if I was wrong, bit rude innit? I’m only trying to help!
I have Android File Transfer app on my Mac. I’m not a new Android or Mac user. But a new A1 user. I have developer options enabled and even changing to MTP mode from there wasn’t helping. And that notification you get in notification shade that says USB for charging was also not there. But after when the battery was down to 54%, it’s working as intended.
<3
Tried all sorts of combination that time. It was still charging my MacBook. Reversing the cable. First plugging MacBook then first plugging A1. Also using other USB C port on MacBook.
That is odd. Do you not have any options to set the default USB behaviour, even if the notification doesn’t show up?
Yeah in developer options. Now set to MTP.
BTW now it’s working as intended. Check the OP. Updated like an hour back.
Ah, excellent.
It’s because hardly anyone uses the up or down votes properly, they probably didn’t read the rediquette I guess.
Ouch. Yeeah, luckily enough hasnt happened to me yet (V20).
charge back and forth, infinite power!
But has it carried on when you got back to >90%?
Nintendo switch does the same thing.
You have to actively opt-in to be a power source. During the link negotiation the devices exchange information on what type of power source they are and their capacity; you shouldn’t be seeing a “normal” source like a laptop or power bank being charged by a mobile device. Someone isn’t setting their power delivery registers correctly.
Unfortunately it’s such a new feature it’s easy for it to be overlooked or for weird corner cases to creep in.
There should be an option in settings on your phone to use your phone as a charger or charge ‘this’ device. Maybe install USB drivers for your phone on your MacBook would help?
My GPD Pocket does the same thing with a Macbook when both are hooked up via USB-C. Macbook immediately shows it is being charged.
To be fair, reddiquette is more like guidelines than rules. Still a good idea to follow them though.
In Soviet Russia, phone charges MacBook.
Ahh. Probably explains alot there.
My idea of it is that you downvoted if someone is a mean jerk and upvote anyone that says something that adds to a conversation, and leave stuff that you’re confused about alone and maybe ask a question
))<>((
But even outside of local etiquette, what’s the possible reason for downvoting such a comment?
He wasn’t wrong, and a cursory Google search would prove that.
He wasn’t rude or condescending.
He even suggested something to try in the simplest terms he could state them.
It’s just a combination of people being vindictive and impotent and bots downvoting everything that isn’t the message they’re implemented to promote. I can’t see any other reason, but I’d sincerely love to have less cynical possibilities if anyone can present them.
If you want to actually do anything with your Mac book you need to insert a 50 dollar bill into the slot on the side. If you don’t have the slot then you need to purchase a slot adapter for 100 dollars then you can insert the 50 dollar bill to unlock the feature.
Bahahha, try r/lgv20 😛
I, too, have heard of such a device. There are 3 of us now!
Nope. That’s just how I do it.
Definitely. I pride my v20 for its durability though, i would wager my specific one is pretty high on the list of most heavily abused smartphones haha.
Forever.
I was able to charge my friend’s iPhone 6 to 90% with 15% left over on my Redmi Note 4. I don’t remember what he was at before but he was pretty low IIRC. Thanks 4100mAh battery!
Bahahah, rain storms.. Lets sumarize what mine has been through. Particulate wise… Rain, mud, dirt, sand, dust, saw dust, and metal shavings. Impact wise… Its fallen from a 52″ tripod, which was placed ontop of a table. Its survived countless falls from torso and head height… Its survived skidding across concrete, tile, and other hard surfaces… It’s survived being punted (dont ask why)… Hammered, being used as a hammer, shot at (with a paintball gun), and keyed up. I could go on haha. This all happened to it with no case, and only a film screen protector. The screen is fine, the camera glass shattered after awhile and I’m too lazy to put a new one in, and the back cover is scratched like hell… Functionally its fine though, which is amazing.
My test is still ongoing, but its survived all of these tests so well its an ongoing joke among my friends to see what manner of stupid thing i can/will do with my phone next haha.
This is still amazing
And iPhones tiny battery. Cool though
It’s an old meme but it checks out.
Didn’t know that, thanks for the tip!
Just to be sure though, let’s say I have devices A and B.
Device A plugged 1st = Device A acting as a charger
OR
Device A plugged 1st = Device B acting as a charger
Some people prefer OSX. It’s all personal preference.
Mine is well taken care of yet the camera crashes all. The. Time.
Which cable were you using?
Hmm. That seems strange. Have you tried a reset?
Yea some prefer the computing equivalent to beating off with a cheese grater.
Right.
Some people prefer the build quality of a macbook, the trackpad, the OS and software that comes with it, etc etc. It’s a fine machine, and you’d be hard pressed to get something that ticks all the boxes that a macbook does for the same price.
That being said, they aren’t for everyone. Seems like it isn’t for you either, but that doesn’t mean they’re garbage.
?
I think you made a typo 🙂
The hipster spends too much time posing in a Starbucks breathing the fumes to achieve simple math. Watch as as the sheep dumps thousands into a laptop only to do virtually everything on his cell phone because in truth the phone is more capable. Watch this primitive creature parade about with a toy version of a tool.
[Are you the kinda guy to go into an Apple store and put all the iPhones on android.com or something?](http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/facebook/000/685/579/544.png)
Now it’s working as intended. Set MTP as default in developer options and battery level on both A1 & MacBook 90+% & when cable is first plugged to MacBook my phone’s charging & when first plugged to A1 my laptop’s charging.
No problems with their mobile products. Their Laptops and desktop are an outright insult. To say “it’s shiny” only shows how gullible people are. Arbitrarily the portion of the worlds economy that is invested in that company creates a moral obligation to provide actual value and innovation. If what people see now is good enough for them then you are only funding the very expensive snail pace the progression of consumer “tech” is being made available to us. They have no interest in selling you the best they have to offer. Only enough to compel you to buy it.
I never made a point about the aesthetics of a macbook.
Where’s the typo?
I legit don’t see it
You typed “device A plugged first” twice 🙂
Yes, but with two different outcomes 🙂
Ah, I see. My bad 🙂
You bet it’s still finite!
Man, the shit that gets downvoted on Reddit baffles me. Polite questions and corrections, freely offered opinion, interesting ideas: it’s bothersome.
But with such a simple solution we would have nothing to bitch about!

Likely no one ever down voted this comment. Reddit fuzzes votes initially in order to reflect the (un)certainty of the community about ranking until enough time has passed.
This frequently leads to comment chains like this one.
Riiiight… Good to know & thanks for sharing the update.
MBP can be charged with 5V??
If you connect both ends of a macbook cable to it, it will charge itself up. Infinite energy!
Applel
Hey there! Have you tried it with Android Studio? Does MacOS recognize it the device so you are able to program and debug with it? I used to have to some issues debugging with a Redmi device and I need to be sure about this before buying the A1. Thank you!
if the phone is charging the Mac, then you don’t see it in AS. If the Mac is charging the phone, you see it in AS and you can debug
if the phone is charging the Mac, then you don’t see it in AS. If the Mac is charging the phone, you see it in AS and you can debug
You can use a phone as a power bank on micro-usb devices with an otg cable
