Surprise us Xiaomi! – Put some colored notification LED in your next high-end phone and I gonna buy it!

  • 0
  • 0

Every time my current phone (no Xiaomi) makes some noise in the far distance, I glance over, seeing that distinct colored light slowly blinking, telling me what’s going on.. I get reminded, that my next phone won’t have that feature.

Because: no one is building such phones anymore 🙁

**Update**

Haha, didn’t expect that much of a response 🙂

So to summarize the answers, I’ve found following tips:

* Use some smart watch/band to get notifications from a distant phone
* Use breathing light with AMOLED displays. That looks like some nice solution, but requires some fiddeling with Substratum. Might not work with LineageOS (at least not out of the box).
* A custom ROM like LineageOS should be able to change the color of white only LED to any other color. This option just seems disabled in Xiaomi’s Android/MIUI. Would be IMHO the best solution to me, as I wanted to switch to another ROM anyway.

So before buying a new phone there are some additional things to check.

Thank you for all the feedback!

Why exactly this phone? In the good ol’ days so many phones had that feature.

It’s actually a Lenovo Zuk Z1. Decent phone, but it’s getting old.

Had to Google what this means.

For the lazy ones: pick up your phone and it shows your new messages.

    Three objections:
    – You can’t or just don’t want to always pickup the phone.
    – You definitely can’t pick up it up, when it lies somewhere across the room or while driving.
    – You don’t want anyone to be able to read the messages just by picking up your phone.

But some distinct colored light tells you roughly from any distance if it’s interesting or not. And it’s up to you to stop what you’re just doing to have a look.

No other feature could replace this. Except a smart watch, maybe.

Im 100% with you on this one. Multicoloured notification led is just so convenient. They should even let us link specific apps to certain led colour.

Might be an option, but need to check out the specs. I wonder if the light is bright/visible enough when putting on some case.

MIUI’s implementation of ambient display is not a substitute for the notification LED because it doesn’t show most notifications. It only shows notifications from ~10 different apps: https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/aod-notification-app-list.50530/

Yeah mine was the battery, so weird. They got swollen, 2 of them because I bought a replacement one for the first, it reached a point where the screen was bending outwards in the middle due to it, it even opened a crack between the frame and the screen and i could look inside the phone

If you use OLED Xiaomi phones, maybe it’s better to use the OLED as the color notification.

    Here’s what I mean: https://www.xda-developers.com/customize-aod-color-miui-11-trinity-substratum-theme/

Gimme a dual sim with dedicated memory slot, 3.5 jack, aptX HD (BT 5.0), NFC and I will buy it too. Xiaomi got none like that. All this flagship talk and yet there only 2 manufacturers which have a single phone with those specs yet – Asus (ZenFone 6) and OPPO (K5) (ノ°Д°)ノ︵ ┻━┻

Shit, I once had a tri-sim phone with dedicated memory card – Acer Liquid E700 Trio. The 2 last triple sim phones were made in 2016 – by Acer and Coolpad. NOW THERE ARE NONE

Just get a Mi Band and get notifications on your wrist.

Think this is what you need, it replaces the notification LED by showing a dot on OLED displays when the screen is off

Stop asking Xiaomi to add unnecessary features and then moaning about the price… 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just enjoy your amazing build quality, cameras, screens and everything else you get, usually built in your home country unlike other manufacturers, for 1/10th the price of Samsung or Apple.

Actually, almost all Mi phones have a multicolored notification LED. It just isn’t enabled on MIUI by default. Lot of custom ROMs take advantage of that.

I’m with this, I had the Samsung Note 5 before and I have an app to actually change what LED notifications colour I do want on specific apps and tasks. It would be a neat feature Xiaomi can add to all its lineups moving forward.

The pulse animation on Mix 3 is enough for me, it shows which colour of the app that got notification although the colour cannot be modified.

i miss my Blackberry when I can change the notification colour and it shows the whole colour spectrum blinking like hell when i got text from my crush.

This was a feature back in Redmi Note 3 Pro. I think they had it till Redmi Note 4. After that, they just started using white LEDs for everything.

Funny that older xiaomi phones used to have that, my current mi5s plus and my older redmi note 3 both had rgb notification led, I really don’t get why they switched to monochrome. Maybe they think it’s more … Stylish?

The mi 9 lite has been perfect to me. Dual SIM or SIM + memory slot (up to 256GB), 3.5 jack, aptX HD AND LDAC (flawless), NFC and infrared.

I’m not trying to justify phone manufacturers or anything but now I see (at least in my country) smart bands getting more and more popular. Gotta say – it’s lifechanging when you have the ability to get notified by a device that vibrates on your wrist and let’s you read what’s happening without having to reach for your phone. Also it’s very convenient for me at work (am a doctor) because I just can mute my phone and go about my day without being interupted by ringtones and such (can’t even remember what my ringtone is set to, my phone is like couple of months on mute now non-stop). Sorry if I sound like a huge fanboy but I highly recommend getting one as it solves not only the notification LED problem but also brings a few features of it’s own.

My MIUI ambient display is always on, don’t have to pick up the phone to display at all. Not sure where you got that from. It goes off in my pocket which isn’t a problem lol.

Pretty sure mine has a multi coloured light too but you have me doubting it.

I don’t know why people are so obsessed with coloured LED notification.

Had it on my mi 5 and yeah, it was a little nice to see at glance that I missed a call for instance. But most of time we will get our phone and unlock it for no reason anyway, so what’s the point?

I rather they put effort in better battery, display and cameras.

Thing is, most of their phones have that feature, but it’s not enabled in the software. They could just enable it with a simple update. But you can still do so by voiding your warranty and rooting your phone, installing some stuff and you’ll get that feature.

Wdym by usually built in your home country? Aren’t all Xiaomi phones made in China only?

I want it too but am now torn between Mi 9 Lite and the Oppo K5. I think I am gonna wait a year though because my phone now is fine.

I was hyped for the Mi Note 10, but then news came it it would not have a card slot. A big let down.

It’s across all manufacturers though. It’s a flagship thing not to provide features – for all the holy waterproofness ffs

Like why did OnePlus drop the phone jack? There is no reason at all.

Someone mentioned that here already…. So if a Xiaomi phone is happily blinking in white, a custom rom can change the colors? I’d switch to LineageOS anyway (if a build is available, of course). Would be awesome, if it’s that “simple”.
