My xiaomi tv just forced me to watch a 60 second ad between switching from hdmi1 to hdmi3. Twice.

I’d watch that ad as many times as they want me to.
Thats some bullshit.
Oh hey I know this ad, it runs on Polish tv
I used to like Xiaomi devices, but the the recent ads related changes in India where they were forcing ads in their Android devices even in settings menu made me unlike them big time. Since then I am seeing multiple reports of ad showing up in unpleasant places in Xiaomi devices like this one.
Dude, my xiaomi phone is like, the top blocked client on my pihole. Even with Mi services off, my Redmi tries to call home all day. Also, we have a Roku that does the same.
wow
Is there a ROM available for Redmi 6? Because I rooted and all that but the only ROM I could find was the MiUI global. But it actually works better now, the phone arrived with some jacked up build.
I made a Pi Hole using a $15 Orange Pi from eBay. You’ll also need a MicroSD card but it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made this year. You set it to be your DNS, but you can also use it as your DHCP server.
sauce please, for research purposes
*”So that’s why the TV was so cheap”*
Did the woman’s chest rise above water level at all? If it did my anger would be more measured. If not, I’d be out for blood.
I watched it twice, so take from that what you will.
Xiaomi software sucks, just give LineageOS a try.
is that charlize theron?
Not as bad, but my Samsung quantum dot, top of the line 2016 display, had forced ads on the menu smart bar used to switch apps and inputs that couldn’t be disabled
I won’t be buying a TV from them again if there are ads. Thankfully, rtings discusses if there are ads or not.
Yea think it’s a jadore advert.
Let the rooting begin!
> The same thing applies to their smartphones, where Ads show out of nowhere in their MIUI.
Where? I have no ads at all on my Pocophone.
I’m about to buy the mi box s for $40 at walmart, does it have the same ad problem??
I was very angry when Xiaomi killed the MiBox 3, but now that I’m using the Amazon Fire Stick, I would never go back to any Xiaomi product.
Nothing on my Mi A2 as well
Did it say it would do so before you bought it?
Wait what do you mean by it tries to call home?
Change region to one of European Union countries and in each app you see ad in settings turn off recommendations.
Is Redmi6 Treble-enabled? Because you can flash a Treble ROM (there’s a basic Treble Lineage port)
MR F
That was always the plan anyway. Just need to search for the perfect rom and a little time.
Yeah I have turned that off for many apps but few still remain.
How does it compare to Pixel Experience these days?
The A2 is more or less stock Android though.
I had the regular mi box in the USA and ads weren’t an issue. Performance was- couldn’t stream high bit rate Blu-ray/4K, over WiFi or Ethernet adapter, and the device would stutter on the menu occasionally. Curious if the S will perform better.
And this is why I’ll never get a ‘smart’ TV. I’ll use a dumb one and a computer under my complete control (be it a Pi or a Linux based system).
Gotta hand it to them, that was awesome
Mi A2 won’t have ads because it runs stock Android and not Xiaomi’s MIUI skin.
The S is the same exact hardware
For me only happens in music app and I just use some 3rd party app from store. Its better anyways.
I live in China and have a xiaomi tv, I only get a short ad when i turn it on, which doesn’t really bother me if it keeps the price of the tv low.
Are the ads built in? Or does the tv require internet to change inputs?
The TV? It turns on when I press the power button on the remote like every other tv. I’m not sure I understand the point of your questions. No my tv doesn’t have a camera.
Don’t need to show you ads if they collect your data. That can be packaged up and sold on without you knowing about it.
When did those ads start to appear? They started for me like a week ago when I press the Smart Hub button, the ads are super tiny but I paid full price for this
such as MTP …
That’s more obscene really – Xiaomi is known for having an ad component in their revenue model, not so much Samsung.
Wut?
This is some Black Mirror bullshit right here.
About a year or two ago. I believe it came in a firmware update, which was an even shittier thing to do. There should be an opt out option. I understand that it helps develop firmwares in the future, to some extent, but man, if you made people choose between software updates and ads I think a lot of people would just choose a different TV.
Setup pihole, no more ads in your network
Setup a pihole in your network, no more ads!
The ads don’t bother me, it is only one 15 second ad and only when I turn on the tv. Not a big deal.
That’s not the problem I had
I tried Pixel Experience and a bunch of other ROMs, and on Snapchat the buttons would be on the same level as Android navigation bar
Only on AICP-Moridified was this not an issue
AICP-Mordified also passes Safetynet automatically I believe, but Pixel Experience requires you to spoof your device’s fingerprint to a different Xiaomi phone (I used Redmi Note 5 Pro)
MTP = file transfer?
Works fine for me without any fixes required, on Android 8.1 (AICP-Mordified)
I had some Bluetooth audio issues tho, but the required fixes were found by other people
It’s not region based, but it’s fairly common for some importers to add modified systems on the phone that show ads.
I had my Sony camera (Nex 7) in MTP mode and my Samsung recognised it fine, but the Xiaomi MiPad4 (MIUI 10) did not, this was even after manually selecting MTP mode in developer options.
It worked after I changed the camera to Mass Storage mode.
Yeah I did it once in the past, unfortunately blocked a few things I didn’t want with my old roommate, and also thought it might be nice to install it natively on a router and try again. Definitely going to set it up again over Christmas.
What’s the problem with Snapchat in the first place? I’ve used Snapchat on a device that wouldn’t pass SafetyNet (traditional SuperSU root) just fine.
They only show ads in certain countries. I brought my Mi4 to Thailand from China and I only had a single ad, when I turned it on for the first time.
Can’t you flash it to a custom ROM to remove all the ads? :/
Easy to whitelist stuff that you want to let through via the gui
Black mirror 😐
It’s that fucking Dior perfume advert…
How is casting on fire stick?
holy shit, does that mean we have to bike for money now
it does not. its a perfume ad for a major name brand
Yeah I get heaps on Note 4 stock miui SD. And I’ve turned off all the ad things I could as seen on this sub.
I’m likely going to do the same. My TV is dying and I’m ready to buy a new one. While I haven’t looked at the current models yet, I fear that they’re all going to be “smart” TVs.
I’m happy to buy a large PC monitor and build a media centre. I only use it for Netflix and YT.
Is the Mi Box ad-free?
Good question. I don’t cast on it. But I’ll try when I’m home in a couple of hours to tell you.
That is cool😂🤣
In what sense are you taking about?
Just get a Panasonic TV.
Sure. I’ll just quickly flash a ROM to my TV real quick
Any good?
I use to own a Sharp Aquos. The image quality was phenomenal
In Australia they are very popular TV brand. .y family has had them for many many years. Picture quality is great and they just last.
The problem is they will slowly ramp it up. Mine was like yours but now I’m getting ads that run a minute just to use basic functions of the TV.
Can I get this TV in Canada?
I have their vacuum and that is pretty ok. Pihole shows just 1 time per hour it pings ntp server.
What was the ad about?
None on my poco F1 as well
How slowly? I’ve had the TV for a year. I can’t imagine that they are running different TVs on different timers for when and where to introduce ads based on length of ownership. It will just be down to the model and which version of the software it is running. For the whole time I have had the tv it is just a 15-30 second video ad when I turn the TV on, and when I turn it off there is a picture ad next to the weather report (which is even less of an issue as if you are turning the TV off then an ad isn’t stopping me from doing anything). Perhaps they have decided to use your TV to test new ad placements and see what the reaction is before rolling it out everywhere? If I start getting ads during use, not just at the beginning and the end I would be pissed, and if I couldn’t remove them (possibly through flashing a different ROM?) I would likely buy my next TV from someone else.
I don’t know if it’s possible for a TV set but I was saying it in the sense of phow we root various mobile devices to debloat them.
Mi a2 had the Android one plan, obviously it won’t have any ads
Oh LoL. I thought you were talking about something else
Did she come out of the water..??
Yes it is region based. Used to be on an asian region. There were still ads even though I made all the steps to disable them.
Tried changing region to EU the other day. No ads since then.
Glad mine hasn’t been connected to the Internet since I got it.
This makes a lot of sense. I’m on global MIUI and have never seen ads. Always confused me to see people talking like they were everywhere.
“Oh no, I switched over…*again*”
Oh boi.
Televisions should be dumb. If I want a smart tv there are a ton of ways for that. Just give me a good quality panel with no software or anything, just give enough ports.
ads don’t bother you? i don’t understand
I really wish people uploaded the firmware for other regions. I’ve been rocking the Mi 4 in Chinese since it launched.
I’ve had mine for three years. When I got it there were no full screen ads. After about a year I started getting static image ads on startup. A few months later these became video ads of about 5 seconds. 5 seconds became 30. Now I’m getting full minute of ads in between switching hdmi sources.
Everyone keeps mentioning pihole. Two questions:
Does pihole have settings for China based networks?
Would pihole limit other functions of the TV like the streaming and casting?
it monitors all queries done via port 80,check it out, easy to setup and whitelist whatever you need
Do you mean my MiBIN?
My xiaomi phone, air cleaners, water filter, cameras, security system, dashcam, air quality meter, rice cooker, laptop, router, and toothbrush don’t make me watch ads to use them.
I mean, she’s done naked scenes. “The woman” is Charlize Theron.
Doubt what?
Why not just pay for the ad-free version?
I have one, never seen an ad on it.
Yeah but I don’t want to have to fucking buy some extra shit so the TV I paid for won’t try to show me ads.
Turns out I might be on some internal testing rom. Gotta figure that out
I use the internet functions so it’s hard to get around.
We use the apps a lot so turning off the network connection isn’t really an option.
Does making your phone constantly retry connections kill your battery. Android phones with Google play constantly fail to connect to Google when in China and it kills batteries so bad
So much for communism.
Literally 30 seconds only when I turn on the TV. I just turn on the TV, go get a glass of water, come back and its done. Or turn on the TV, reply to a message and it’s done. It isn’t like they’re 5 minutes long, and it isn’t like they play every 10 minutes.
ALL Xiaomi products do that. Smartphones, particularly. Even when you’re in the settings, ads are displayed. That’s the reason I don’t want to buy any of their tech. I’d never thought they’d do that with their televisions as well. Come on ?! How could they even get such praise, when you know what they eventually do (displaying ads all the way) ?
My xiaomi phone, air cleaners, water filter, cameras, security system, dashcam, air quality meter, rice cooker, laptop, router, and toothbrush don’t make me watch ads to use them.
Yet
Well, the toothbrush is ultrasonic, maybe I’m getting ads I don’t even know about
Zero ads on my my mix 2s
Yet!
My sharp TV does that when I turn it on. Fuck Chinese TV’s
Spend more for a tv that doesn’t show advertisements. Stop ever buying their products again and if we all do it they won’t fucking do it anymore.
Lol my equally cheap Android TV has better specs and instead of ads gives you paid apps for free lol
Yeah, that’s what I’m saying.
Link?
But you f.cking TV does ! And, when you buy Xiaomi phones, they let you pay them ‘cheaper’ if you want but you’ll have to see ads everywhere.
But at least you got to see Charlize Theron in this masterpiece of an ad.
Yep. Me and the father in law got to pretend not to watch twice
Thank you for reminding me to never purchase a Xiaomi product, ever…
I haven’t really encountered any ads on the phone unless you count the ads in the music app, but that’s not really fair to complain about because the music app is more like a Spotify alternative than a simple player.
Well….. Not even xiaomi socks?
I have xiaomi tablet, xiaomi dashcam and a xiaomi phone. I never have the ads problem
*vigorously changes hdmi ports*
What shall we do
Imagine your vac (I have one too, btw) reading some ad in the middle of the night. And when starting and finishing cleaning. 😉
Or the umbrella, it would be quite a feat if they got that to play ads.
I just had an evil idea, imagine if you have to listen to an ad before the umbrella deploys… *hides*
I was like, “What the hell is a Xiaomi”
I mean I still am like that, but that was my initial reaction too
They will definitely have some ad cleverly hidden somewhere 🙂
Inside.
Or appearing after the first wash 🙂
Or to keep it open
This would infuriate me so much, I paid for the tv I own it I should not have to watch ads starting up or turning off.
/r/ABoringDystopia
Then what’s the point of having a smart tv then?
The Xiaomi TV is cheap because you need money to setup a Pi Hole to block ads.
Woah, I’m in Thailand.
Oh I thought that was the scene from reindeer games, I’d watch that twice in a row no problem even with grubby looking Gary Sinise in there. (Thanks for the suit by the way Mr. Sinise. PS-you’re so lucky to have had Charlize Theron press her sweet body against you.)
I had one, that even if I had no internet connection, it would still play, heck, it even played if it crashed, I also tried pulling the plug, but it still played. That was really weird, so I opened the back and searched for an accu, guess what was on the accu? Tide™
Yep, it’s a Tide™ ad
Ooh that’s a good and evil way too.
This is actually terrifying beyond belief and we need to stand up against this **now**
The ‘stock’ music app ?
Just throw out the whole TV
I mean at least the ad had Charlize Theron in it so I guess that’s alright
I’d rather buy a new tv than wait for 5yrs
kek. in these days I’m going to buy a new smartphone and I was undecided between xiaomi and asus. Then I found the “make a request on their website” and “wait X hours” to unlock bootloader.
You must be sick of flashing lights now
Use a different device for streaming. Disconnect the internet from the TV. Problem solved.
Don’t buy Chinese trash simple as that
When I see shit like this it sends a message
Dear consumer,
Fuck yourself
Thanks
Well, I now know one brand I will never get.
Ok Mitch
At somt point soon I’ll break down ans get a 4K TV but sure as hell it won’t be this kind of Smart TV.
Oh and congrats on the upcoming kid OP. 😉
I know this ad!
Just don’t connect the TV to the internet
*5,70776256
/s
you need pi-hole.
Seriously! Was in the market for an okay 4K tv under $500.
This is a small market with that budget but nonetheless there are options. All of which are smart TVs. For some reason i couldn’t find a single non smart 4K tv for under $500. They were all roku or the new amazon fire tv. I had the amazon tv for 1 day and sold it instantly because of shit like this. I had ads plastered all over when i just start the damn TV up. Didn’t even want to stick around to see the rest, especially since the quality was sub par for even that price range. I just want a tv that i don’t have to hit the home button, then go through a menu with directional buttons to switch inputs. I just want to hit input button twice or whatever.
I actually found someone selling a Xiaomi for $20. It was in perfect working condition and all, the only thing was that the volume was stuck at full blast.
Needless to say I couldn’t turn it down.
`Hahaha as a heterosexual male female bosoms distract me from major annoyances`
Yes, totally possible with Android TV
I have a note 5 pro also and don’t get ads?
They’re flashing ads to your TV, so why not?
How much was the tv? Cause you could turn of the smart stuff and buy a Fire TV Stick or Mi Box if you have the money and it doesn’t display ads without Internet.
That’s a case pihole would handle
The same people who are most susceptible to scams, old and uneducated people.
Heh.
R E S U M E
V I E W I N G
And that’s gonna be an infini-pass on Xiaomi TVs for me. I can barely stand ads in Hulu, I would be unable to hold in my frustration and anger from seeing an ad when I just want to switch to my Xbox.
Lmao why did you waste your money buying a smart TV if you arent going to use any of the features. Why not buy a nice LED tv with no smarties for like $1000 less?
Smart TV with ads when you switch input? No thanks! There might be a setting to disable it. It’s how Xiaomi offers their products for a cheaper price than competitors. I’ve never heard of the company.
QQ ago
Welp, thanks OP, you just helped me decide whether I should give Xiaomi a chance for my phone choice, not gonna happen now
Ur fault for subscribing to stupid services
Yes, but all the good stuff is hidden by “careful” camera angles.
Can you disconnect it from the internet?
I have a Sony smart TV and I don’t have any ads. I can’t believe this is a thing.
Earbuds are top notch though..
that’s only in India if i’m not mistaken, my gf has Xiaomi Mi 8 (Global) and does not have any ads, we live in Europe.
i wanted to configure it 2 days ago, but don’t know how 😀 i installed it and everything on my Raspberry Pi 3 and it’s runing, i get the IP of my Raspberry and put it as DNS on my router and it doesn’t block anything >\_>
As someone who sells televisions for a living, I can tell you the average person I talk to thinks the opposite.
Most interactions I have are people looking to connect as little to the television as possible. They don’t want an external box because, often times, that is the motivation for upgrading. They also don’t want to connect more than a DVD player or maybe a set top box, which is why the Black Friday two HDMI port models sell so well (obviously price is also a factor, but you can get a higher tier model with another port for $20 more and that would be a deal breaker for some).
I can’t tell you how sad it makes me that someone will purposefully buy something like a Roku television because it has Roku over a Sony, Samsung or LG because their smart features are less or confusing to use.
Won’t be buying one of these.
Immediate Refund.
Soon there will be advertisements in phone calls, length of ad determined by distance between callers.
Go to the queries list, filter the list with the ip of your tv and block suspicious queries from your tv on the block button (far right of the line)
Much rather have a smart tv. Easier to connect to and have all the apps needed right there. Easy to use and can even mirror a phone screen onto it. I prefer to have less things plugged into it and more actually built in
Was it a UN##KS**00 (## == screen size, ** == 80, 85, 90, or 95)? If so, I bought the same one. Connecting it to the internet wasn’t worth it. Got an Apple TV instead. It’s an amazing TV otherwise.
If you’re buying a TV for specs, such as a top-line OLED for its deep blacks, that’s often unavoidable. I can’t recall the last time I ran into a > $1k tv that wasn’t a smart tv. Best real option is to never connect it to the internet.
I came here from another sub.
I have never heard of Xiaomi before.
This has convinced me to never go within 10′ of one.
Yeah, the KS series. The software update did fix a few ARC issues. The KS series due to the connect box were known to have issues with ARC, when I contacted Onkyo about issues I was having they asked “do you have a samsung tv with a connect box?” when I mentioned nothing about my TV brand/model. Thankfully, it seems like it’s fixed over the summer.
Also, both KS series TVs I have had some dead pixels out of the box. Thankfully not noticeable unless you’re like 1 foot away. Just my opinion on Samsung going downhill. Overall a beautiful TV, but definitely think the optical connection to the new connect boxes makes more sense than the thick cables we got.
♻️
Oh no
I was making a joke, about how I couldn’t turn it down. I appreciate the advice, though 😁
Mate you bought a Xiaomi TV, they produce it for the price they sell it, What did you expect?
Root that shit.
Wow, return that piece of garbage
I mean if you’re going to be forced to watch an ad there could be worse ads out there to watch.
Upvote for a pretty solid woosh lol
Good way to get me to never buy a product they make.
This is going into the top ten reasons the only smart device I own is a smartphone…
Mute?
Ok, guess whitch brand just went on my ‘avoid list’?
> I figured 4 ports was the absolute minimum.
Out of curiosity, why? While I’m personally using four of my six, a lot of people have much simpler set ups. Like, a lot of people opt out of a soundbar and if I didn’t have the ports, I could always use optical and get it back. From there, many people are cutting cable, or at least want as few boxes in their house as possible (that dreaded $8 fee…), so there isn’t much need for a box. The whole point for the smart TV functionality is to eliminate the need for an external device like Apple TV or Roku, so that doesn’t even register on their radar. This leaves my game console, which is honestly interchangeable with a Blu-ray or DVD player for most people, meaning I only really need one port.
On the opposite end, people with extremely complicated set ups generally use a receiver and that is what they use for ports. I could, quite honestly, buy a super basic receiver and get four HDMI ports that would connect to the one ARC, with more complicated receivers giving seven, which all connect to a single ARC.
Even those without insane needs but a desire for a more elaborate system can get a couple from something like a soundbar. I can tell you the Sony HT-Z9F gives you two and the CT-5000 adds three, with other soundbars offering more or less ports, which eliminates the need for the television to have more. Even with a Black Friday two HDMI port TV I could make my soundbar, PlayStation 4, Apple TV and set top box set up work without disconnecting anything, buying a selector or any of that.
Anyway, my point is just that more ports aren’t exactly needed. It sucks for anyone who is in the unusual lowest television with a bunch of devices attached, since higher tier users tend to need less and low tier users tend to need as few as possible.
Such a wholesome r/woosh.
Say “McDonalds!“ to skip advertisement.
that would be a return from me
r/assholedesign
That’s the ideal. Even the Samsung QLess have some ads. Like tje 75” q9fn is like 5-6k and even that one has a small advertising spot on the bottom left of the home bar to show you a suggested app.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2018/9/19/17877970/xiaomi-ads-settings-menu-android-phones
Would this happen on the mi box too? I’m planning on picking it up but want to know if this will be an issue.
Where are you located? What happens if you disconnect it from WiFi or Ethernet?
I have a TCL Roku TV lel
So that’s what the kids are calling it these days
Now please drink your verification can.
For real. I use my PlayStation for all my entertainment. Bought a larger tv that only had the choice as a “smart tv.” Now every time I accidentally hit the home button on the tv remote, it takes forever to load apps I don’t use and suggestions I don’t want. I don’t mind the tv having the features, but it should at least let me turn it off. TV is a Sony Bravia by the way.
I have a Redmi 5 Plus and the only ads I see are in app ads, like basically every other free app does.
Much better than Huawei, they don’t let you at all.
XIAOMI..
you are out of my interest zone. Seriously… ADVERS for bought TV?! See ya, that is disgusting.
Well yeah, use it as a dumb TV
My old CRT had ads too
Dior ads are pleasing to the eyes and ears at least
I hate youtube for giving me thousands of those horrible sounding squarespace ads
I don’t want to build a damn website
(that includes you… WIX.com)
To be fair I got a new 50 inch 4K HDR smart tv for less than $400
It should be illegal to show ads on items already purchased
all day? you run one line of script..
I hate trying to watch anything anymore. YouTube makes you watch tons of commercials if you don’t pay for premium. Hulu makes you watch commercials if you don’t pay for commercial free. TV and internet in general is an aggravation because of all the commercials. I understand that’s how they make money with commercials and all but I don’t think the amount of commercials you’re forced to watch is at all necessary.
Time to burn everything down.
Uhm, what problems do you have? I used to deploy all kinds of is in VMware for old job role
PLEASE DRINK VERIFICATION CAN.
why VMware? for home use is recommend virtual box or get a pihole docker image.. or a pizero…
I won’t buy this time rapist TV. But I’ll take it a step farther, I’ll Black list any company willing to push their ads up our asses, uninvited.
The ads are alive! Am I an ad??
My tv would turn on and display a giant ad every time. It was not in demo mode.
I took it back to the store a few days later.
what’s pihole? I absolutely despise ads.
Google it, a network device/software that filters traffic on network level
Outside of buying a new TV, it’s your only option bud.
It’s bullshit that you even wrote “I’d even pay a premium to purchase another brand with no intrusive ads.” There shouldn’t be a premium for that shit. It’s a fucking tv. You own that, there shouldn’t be ads on it.
You must be Australian.
Because it’s a huge country?
Well, others have pointed out I could use a pihole so maybe there are options
Hey man, if you want help with getting pi-hole up and running, it is pretty simple. I do recommend having dedicated pi to it, because it adds simplicity, but if you want to do it through a vm I’ll walk you through it step by step.
Yeah the next time I get a TV I’ll be looking at LG. Like, I know their OLEDs are obscenely more expensive, but I’m not getting a top of the line TV and having god damn ads on it. There is a reason I don’t pay for live TV and it’s 99% because of ads.
What did you end up getting?
A Hisense with Roku. Found the quality with deeper colors and blacks to be much better than the toshiba Amazon has for their smart tv. Getting to the setting and everything is also just one button on the Roku atleast. With the Toshiba (atleast the 4K 50” i had) you had to hit the home button and shuffle through like three options to get to the setting for picture and everything and by then you can’t even look at the picture to see how the settings you are changing are affecting the image. So that was infuriating to say the least. UI just isn’t there really. Decided if i was going to be forced to have a smart TV then i might as well get a brand that’s got it figured out a little by now.
Most modern TVs don’t have a 3.5mm out? Optical is even becoming more rare.
I got a refurb Roku Ultra for $35, it has that whole 3.5mm headphone remote thing that may be the feature you’re looking for, though I’m sure native integration is what you preferred.
I’ve had it for three years now so.. not much I can do now
Actually someone reposted this there and got like a million upvotes…
I’ve only used the Chinese version of the mibox which is the same os as my tv so it probably has ads. The international version is a different rom I think.
My phone? No I haven’t seen that at all.
I bought it before they started inserting ads in all over the place.
Yes but we use a lot of the online functions.
Xiaomi TV’s are a mibox with a screen.
That’s what we usually do too. But this happened when switching between two hdmi sources.
Thanks, Greg or whoever you are now.
Without ads. The Mi box has been reported here as beeing without ads.
Maybe you could configure your router to block their servers from the tv’s local ip.
The stock music app that comes with hundreds of thousands of free streamable and downloadable albums that they actually pay licenses for. Im okay with an ad in that app. It’s not like you are forced to use it. It’s a different situation than having ads on startup or in the settings menu.
That’s the American version right? In China they run the exact same os as the TV
I do not know, but seems likely. I am from Germany and do not own any Xiaomi devices. May I ask how much the tv cost? Was it much cheaper then the alternatives?
I would throw that thing out the window on the first offense. I truly despise advertising.
I thought you were on about TVs but honestly the same applies to smartphones too, especially considering that they cost more than TVs amd you still have to pay for your phone plan.
It was 5000rmb three years ago which was really cheap for the size (60″). Their TV’s have got cheaper now so my older model gets the ads to help support that lower price
r/totallynotrobots
I have an overpriced Samsung “Smart” TV with 2 hdmi ports. I manually switch out my chromecast and switch all the time.
If I could, I’d buy a large computer screen, a separate sound system and a separate tv tuner.
Unfortunately there are no such things like 50“ computer screens (at least not intended for home use)
That is how you get a yeast infection.
I feel like most people don’t have game consoles. The switch only just got YouTube, and I don’t know if it has netflix.
Chromecast for $35 is definitely better than spending $1000 extra on the word “smart” on a slow-as-shit TV with a shitty UX. Hell, it’s better even better if you already have the smart TV. But Samsung and Xiaomi want to sell you their software stack, spy on you with their TVs, push ads at you, get the platform dev’s cut that Google and Apple and Amazon enjoy… And they want something they can advertise for each new line of TVs. So they started calling TVs smart and adding shitty features and effective antifeatures. And they sold.
That exist but it subsidizes the cost of the phone bill and makes the sim card free. It also isn’t popular in any way shape or form.
Solid advice and a woosh
Roku’s and Chromecasts are $35 and they don’t have built in mics and cameras to spy on you in your bedroom!
Biggest overreaction I’ve ever read
no way….. that sucks man. Thats what i hate abt reddit
To unlock drink verification can.
I was also referencing The Subliminal Man
To be fair they got to make their money somehow, cuz they certainly aren’t making much from the product sales at the prices they put them at and with the really good price to quality ratio they have.
You could probably use a HDMI switch to bypass this.
Yeah, that’s probably the thing you should be worried about with owning a Huawei…
Yeah, Just knowing that they display ads between switching sources on your god damn television, I’d say I’d never buy their products. Is there any other brand that does that ?
“Can I just have a goddamn TV in my life for once? Why do I have to hook up a goddamn Wi-Fi up to it, plug an Ethernet cable to it, type in credit card info, make an account and have it listen to everything I say?” – My dad

oh…well.. one day will come when smart features become dumb enough
Do this until you unplug it:

It’s the point behind it
My router doesn’t have those options. Looking into using pihole
Fuck that half assed shit. If you are going to provide me with that much apps at least give me decent ram.
Hell, I have a Chinese-brand TV (hisense) and they haven’t even pulled this shit either
Depends. Their phones have never given me this sort of thing and I’ve had them for years.
No ads on my current A1, previous A1, and earlier Mi 4i.
When did this start? I have an Indian phone but in the US and am getting nothing.
> And it’s not like you’re forced to use MIUI
This is never a good answer. Never.
Haha I worry this will become the main difference between ’50” 4K TV’ and ’50” 4K computer monitor”
If they start doing it with the TVs and people don’t complain about it, it’s only a matter of time before they start some bullshit like this on the rest of their products. Unfortunately companies do it all the time… :/
I guess it’s Geo based, even though you bought this phone in India since you’re using in US it won’t show up.
I guess. People have always stepped aside to advertising so they’ll get used to it sooner or later. Amazon famously did this with their Kindle and things were fine.
Just ways to get around the ads. Sorry, I really dispise ads. I feel they take away the control as well as the experience, but to each their own.
Sauce?
According to all known laws of aviation….
…and thats why i dont give a snitch
Samsung is also pretty good
This was cheaper than a TV without smarts by a fair bit. Flash sale deal.
Eh. I just hook up a Chromecast/Fire TV to it.

Did you connected your TV to internet?
You can actually install the international rom by downloading it on the official website… I did it to update my Mi4
You flashed the China model? Could you link me? I haven’t been able to find that.
Yes it was a model that came from mainland China. I bought it over eBay. Now I don’t exactly recall what I did back then but there is this link : http://en.miui.com/thread-30784-1-1.html
Normally the linked ROM should be in English. Just backup your data because of I recall correctly it will erase everything on your phone (contacts, photos, SMS, everything)
Edit : I remember using method 2 because method 1 wouldn’t work for some reason.
Edit 2 : this might also be of help https://in.c.mi.com/thread-708315-1-0.html
Ahhh. The Mi 4, the phone. I’m trying to reflash the Mi TV 4.
FYI the mainland phones have English UI and can download the Play Store, so there isn’t much need to reflash anymore.
Oooooh shit I’m really sorry I completely misunderstood. My phone came in Chinese and couldn’t be changed so I had to flash it beforehand haha
and British TV
*complains about ads on his smart device, buys another ad invested device* genius move
I don’t have ads on the Amazon Fire stick.
And I did not complain about ads but about the box being inusable since about 5 months because of xiaomi first update to oreo, and no support to users of fix available.
Really ? I have lots of ads for their products on my firetv, i don’t have real ads, where i have to look at a video or something, but i have to get through the amazon prime series to get to my apps for example, and that is still anoying
Also, i have was planning on buying a mibox, why does it is unstable? And can’t i just buy the box and don’t upgrade the fireware?
still looking for the TV that has 3-4 composite AV ports, Component, and RGB SCART for my retro consoles, maybe a VGA and a few HDMI ports in a nice 55″ set… oh, and a headphone jack. All with none of this 3.5mm dongle rubbish either. just solid ports.
also, no smart TV junk or camera…
> still looking for the TV that has 3-4 composite AV ports, Component, and RGB SCART for my retro consoles
If you want this stuff you’re going to want a receiver. Even with the most [basic](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/onkyo-tx-5-2-ch-4k-ultra-hd-and-3d-pass-through-hdr-compatible-a-v-home-theater-receiver-black/5754933.p?skuId=5754933) $200 unit you’ll get two.
which Xiaomi phones?
Cuz I mean I wouldn’t’ve bought my mi mix 2 if anyone had said anything about OS side ads and I’ve not encountered any in my useage.
Right but you can never get complacent with any company. Always gotta move forward and hop aboard a new brand every few years. Xiaomi for this phone, this laptop and probably the next phone for me, and then it’s onto the next company that’s offering what I want from those devices at the time.
The Mi Mix 2 runs miui and i’ve never seen an ad.
are you using some weird xiaomi app store?
cuz the play store obviously never does that and neither does sideloading
See that’s kinda the issue, they’re actually really nice hardware wise. It’s the bloat the load software side that does this.
\> probably bought through gearbest
yeah gl with that
On the launcher or where?
Just because you do not have ads does not mean there are no ads – it’s region specific.
I understand that, just giving my perspective.
I know this is an old post but want to ask if installing a system wide adblocker like Blockada will help fix this? Asking since I am planning to buy a 32 inch version of the Mi TV in India.
Not sure. I don’t know if the India version has ads either. They tend to do different things in different markets.
From what Info i have, India version too has the ads.
..and on French TV too.
i see no harm.
One word: Pihole
And? Every TV has ads, YouTube, live tv, you basically can’t watch tv without ads unless you pay for a subscription like Netflix
This is a thread from 5 years ago. Not many TVs have ads when changing between physical input channels. In fact, Xiaomi figured out it was bad form and fixed it with an update.
I never had ads in the system OS, for the past 4 years, and I recently upgraded to the newest Xiaomi TV
Where are you located? Their ad policies differ by country. At first this tv had no ads, then after about a year it had unskippable ads on boot. A few years after that they became skippable. I’ve had this tv for 8 or 9 years.
Spain, I have never seen any first-party ads, might be a region thing?
100% regional. Same thing on the phones.
On the phones it isn’t regional, it’s only on budget and mid-range phones, flagship have no ads
