LONG POST COMING 🙂
*I am willing to help anyone with flashing a ROM, Custom Recovery and debloating a device, you can just reply here if you need help from me and I will gladly help…*
*Currently using MIUI from Xiaomi.eu V12.0.3.0*
So I am using my Mi 8 as a daily driver for more than a year. And in this year I got into the custom ROM environment. MIUI global version 11 didn’t quite fit my preferences for an Android phone, even with a powerful phone that the Mi 8 is, so I decided to test different custom AOSP ( Android Open Source Project) ROMS for about 3 weeks – 1 month each. These are my results and my opinions for these 8 custom ROMS (ALL BASED ON ANDROID 10) :
1)EVOLUTION X – The first ROM I tested. Super excited when I was using it. When it comes to performance it is a beast of a ROM. Everything was running smoothly and it is feature rich. Also the Face Unlock feature was active. I would rate it as : Performance : 8/10, Battery consumption 7/10, Features 8/10, Stability 7/10. Only thing that annoyed me is the fact that it was discontinued so I had an outdated ROM. So I decided to test another one!
(Android 11 has released now, it is basically the same with MUCH better performance but no face Unlock…)
2)MIUI12 Global Got released back then. I gave it a try :
Quite buggy I’d say, with the battery draining faster than Evolution X, but a lot of features and super wallpapers as it’s highlight (or maybe not). Performance was a 6/10, Battery 6/10, features 7/10, Stability 6/10. It is definitely a beautiful ROM but it lacks battery control and is FILLED with bloatware and stock apps that some users might find useful (. You CAN however remove or disable most of them through ADB and Fastboot Tool-messgae me if you need help with it) Updates come VERY SLOW, although google play is up to date.
3)Flashed PIXEL EXPERIENCE PLUS after that : It’s the Pixel Phones Android experience as the name of it says. Almost stock Android with google apps as intended to be installed on the Pixel smartphones. Absolutely stable, fast, secure BUT. I didn’t get google pay to work or Android Auto without Magisk (root). Also the Google Play is outdated on the last Stable Pixel Experience Release (Android 10 of course) and the battery life didn’t do that well either. So for me it’s Performance 8/10, Battery 5.5/10, Features 7/10 (the non-plus version is not that feature rich) and Stability 8/10. (Android 11 version came out with updated Google play, no face Unlock).
4)MIUI 12.0.3.0 From Xiaomi.eu. I am CURRENTLY USING this ROM as a daily driver more than intended. I love face Unlock on my device. It’s the same as MIUI but debloated, and relieved from the bloatware and ads that come on the Global and Chinese Versions of Miui. It’s optimized for the Battery and performance balance and control. It is the best one for me yet, getting almost 6-7 hours SOT with some use of LTE, bluetooth, wifi and Mobile hotspot. So I would definitely recommend and give it : Performance 7.5/10, Battery 9/10, Stability 8/10, features 8/10. The only “issue” there is, it’s the fact that the sound on bluetooth speakers is somewhat lower because of the EU regulations… I tried flashing the xiaomieusound.zip fix through TWRP but I’m still having no luck with. Can live with it though!
5)Paranoid Android Quartz 5 : By far the best performance of them all, medium to good Stability but the second worse battery of them all… It’s really a pitty that such a fast and responsive ROM (with face Unlock btw) is giving out a little worse battery than expected. It’s the only reason I didn’t use it as a daily driver. Performance 8.5/10, Battery 5.5/10, Features
7.5/10, Stability 7/10.
6)CrDroid : Works like a charm in terms of battery, performance BUT. Without having much to say as it is almost the same as Pixel Experience, it’s sad that Fast chargers are not working on this ROM limiting it to 4.4V only… Face Unlock also doesn’t use the infrared cam so I can’t Unlock with your face at night or at dark places. For me these are super important so it’s : Performance 8/10, Battery 8/10, Stability 6.5/10, Features 6/10. Google.play up to date.
7)RevengeOS : Amazing performance and I don’t know how but it handled the overheating better than any other ROM I tried. It is super fast and responsive with great battery life. BUT Face Unlock doesn’t work and Google play is outdated… So : Performance 8.5/10, battery 8/10, features 7.5/10, Stability 7/10.
8)Lineage OS : It’s as stock as they say, yes. Its the pure raw Android experience, (Google apps need to be Flashed with the rom separately). It is fast, with regular updates and with medium battery consumption. The resodn I did not use it as a daily driver is because there was basically no STABLE version of it, only nightly updated ones and that the Face Unlock wasn’t working either. So it’s : Performance 7/10, Battery 7/10, Stability 6/10, Features 6.5/10.
In my opinion, only MIUI EU.
STABLE OR BETA.
I use Mix2s and I test all roms for my phone.
And always I find some bug with custom roms with some apps.
All ways I go back to MIUI EU.
And for audio, use Viper4Android FX.
NO ROOT VERSION.
Not flashed rom for a long time but it’s good to see my old fav Paranoid Android still living on.
Btw,why didn’t you try custom kernel with roms you like but don’t have good battery life. With better optimized kernel you could have got better battery life on paranoid.
Have you tried flashing alternative Kernels? It should alter the performance and SOT.
I’m on last Android 10 Evo X Poco F1. Wanted to move to Android 11 ROM but I heard at some point some ROM have issue with file transfer speed so I hold on Android 10.
Going to flash that tonight on my f1. Global has too many issues as of right now. And its super slow for a sd845 device
> LOS: Stability 6/10
?
Bit of a flashaholic myself and agree with all of this. My only contribution would be a recommendation for mi globe ROMS which are based on MIUI EU but you can further debloat. You can download them from the ROM builder section of their website. Been running these on my Mi8 and Mi5 and not had any reason to change for a while. Next flash will be a stable android 11 in a few months I think, I’ll see what pops up on xda. Still love my Mi8, had it since first released and definitely got a few more years in it.
Different roms dont *really* make a difference in perf and battery. Its the different kernels that *might* be delivering different performances and battery lives.
My Pixel Experience Plus edition rom is very awesome. I refer this one for anyone who want to try.
I have a Mi6 and I’d like to move on with a newer version. However, the last thing I flashed was a Motorola Xoom and that was years ago so I’d like some up to date documentation that doesn’t make assumptions about the level of knowledge of the reader but that seems to be pretty much impossible to find. One thing that concerns me though is security: do banking apps, Google Pay, Revolut, etc. all work on these ROMs?
Choose it wisely. Looking at comments choose the which is minimal, these kernel with lot of customisation and they can be messy.
I would review if everything went OK with that. It’s the ROM with probably the slowest development because of how much it’s tested. Tons of ROMs use it as base but for some reasons it got the lowest score for you, behind of tier2/3 ROMs?.
Sorry but this review seems super biased (and I don’t want even talk about the face unlock…).
Thanks. Haven’t got the urge to change ROM at the moment but when I do I’ll definitely check this out.
was using xiaomi eu till miui 12 which I didn’t like, so I re tried evolutionX on my k20pro (tried it a few month when I had a mi8) and I am with it since. really loving it.
imo most AOSP ROM are pretty similar, just some bugs differienciate them but they are fixed the next release.
this post was made by the evolutionX gang
My banking app detect root even I hide it in magisk hide repacking magisk manager. I’m using pixel experience rom on mi 8
Yes
I want to go back to latest stable version of Miui11 on PocoF1 from my current shitty MIUI12.
What should I do?
I need battery life and balanced performance. That’s all
I would say that I have seen better battery or performance from different ROMs and I don’t think ROMs have kernels built in? So some ROMs may have some form of battery bleed or features don’t fully work or are incompatible causing the issues, and are more stable in other ROMs(maybe a better developer or pure luck). Or maybe they build their ROM based on a particular kernel..
I have seen that certainly on XDA the forums are full of new ROMs and pages of unhelpful content. For someone like me that flashes a ROM once a year or 2 (when ever I get a new phone basically) you read the guide and it slips a load of important steps I assume because they expect you to know this or because they developed a ROM months ago and included these steps but omitted them in new releases..
From reading the forums it certainly appears miui based ROMs are better then aosp on Xiaomi phones. I’m on miui EU at present, did try mimix but it was rooted and banking apps didn’t work.
I’m confused about the whole google play is up to date part, what do you mean with that?
Do you happen to have a tutorial on how to install Xiaomi.eu on a Mi8?
I have a RN9S, should I move to MIUI EU? I currently have global but I’m pretty new in this android thing. The battery life is not so good rn. Should I do a factory reset before installing a new ROM?
You need install a zip in recovery mode and the apk.

@ViPER4AndroidFX
Not on this device, I used to do that some time ago, in other phones, but this one is completely stock.
Interesting to read about your experiences. What specifically made you go down the custom ROM route when the latest MIUI came out?
I’m on a Mi 8 myself with the latest MIUI and actually quite liked the update personally. The UI tweaks and gestures were very welcome. 👌
I also have K20 Pro and Evo X is definitely the best AOSP ROM for this device
Thanks for the explanation, I was curious as I have the global version so that may be why I didn’t quite get what put you off MIUI, although I do understand it’s not for everyone.
I hear you on the bloatware for sure, I just dump it all in one folder and forget about it. 😝
I’m really considering it! Did you do a factory reset before changing to EU?
That sounds nice! Do you have any tutorial by chance?
Mi 8 XDA Forum. I saw a few there.
Personally I like NGK as it comes with it’s own companion app.
Thank you! Will do
Fantastic post. Used to flash Android, Windows phone and iPhone ROMs, but have no time for firefighting issues these days. Incredibly helpful.
Have a Xiaomi Mi8 and would like to get off annoying official MIUI. Could you outline the steps (especially re bricking). Also can do all on MacOS or Linux? Don’t have a Windows installation.
Thanks
BTW has anyone come across WiFi hotspot issues – Connected no internet? On a Mi8 11.0.5 and still problems. Did ADB tethering fix – no luck.
I’m currently using Pixel Experience (Android 11) on my mi8 but I want to switch to Xiaomi.eu.
What is the correct procedure to install it?
Thanks.
Thanks. Is the DM Verity useful? Because in xiaomi.eu site they don’t talk about that in the installation procedure.
Thanks. Do you have a link to download It?
Are you sure I don’t have to wipe system to install xiaomi.eu ?
Thank you so much. Installed and everything Is perfect.
If I want to root I can do It through magisk manager?
IMO Evolution X is the best aviable ROM for MI 8.
It’s super fast, SOT on really crappy battery is fantastic: 3h and 35min from 100% to 20% on stock MIUI to 5h 27min from 100% to 20% on EvoX ROM
I love the customisation and flow of the UI, you can adjust almost anything, you can even disable this annoying bar on bottom with navigation gestures enabled, NFC works but sadly face unlock doesn’t (at least for me)
MIUI is really nice and all, but “stockish” ROMS are lot better when it comes to performance and stuff.
Installation was pretty easy too though.
yo, does downgrade work like that? I’ve always read that downgrading is impossible and could brick your device
Ikr how to do it, I just got taught that reversing to previous MIUI is impossible :v
Do you encounter a bug with the HDR display when you open up a youtube HDR video and the screen stays in HDR after closing youtube app?
Same problem on the same version. To move from the topic I’m very satisfied on parandroid quartz 5, everything works + good battery life. Everything except lack of support now (security patch sept 5. 2020). There are not many devs left for dipper, xiaomi eu seems to be the only way now for the latest patches
At least it gives. I might get my hands on compiling a rom if I get free time this July
