Obviously, but feels laggy for Poco F1 right now, plus Infrared camera isn’t available
no good multi sim support, no phone calls recording, no other features because its bare as fuck… lagggy as shit sometimes because not as well optimized
that was my experience on LOS, I loved the android version bump that brought in different features. But when I put nova launcher on I dont care whats really under there, and MIUI is just straight up better.
Can someone please explain to me why MIUI is so bad?
cause MIUI sucks
Christ, the gestures are absolutely ingrained to me now after using it for \~2 days D: I find my self trying to use it on my old phone and thinking, why tf is this not working.
Security and unwanted advertising are big reasons. Also the MIUI apps are pretty far integrated – its a pain to change even the default SMS app
Can i use this process for my redmi y2/s2
I loved everything about the miui but the notch in games and making nearly impossible to switch sms app were the two main reason to flash this breast and get Android one
Honestly after a week of use I personally found no bugs or any freezes works like a charm
There’s a few key points that make the experience kind of crappy compared to other UIs.
– ads in system apps like the file manager. It can be disabled but c’mon that’s pretty terrible
– wonky way miui handles notifications.
– cleaner app notifications can’t be disabled. So you’ll get a notification every week or so about it wanting to remove “garbage” from your phone.
But it’s okay. Not the greatest, but a solid okay.
I’m happy with MIUI, can’t go back to another launcher, think it’s just one of those hate bandwagons to jump on
What issues did he had with Pixel Experience? I prefer it over LOS in my opinion.
I really wish this phone had the bands for the US. the whole video and he didn’t say a word about bands, it’s not going to work any better in Canada right?
Miui 10 is so much better than miui 9. Don’t go with the circlejerk that miui bad stock good etc
I’ll never understand people’s fetish with stock Android. Back in the day, stock android was the fastest UI and even the best ROMs couldn’t match stock Android’s speed and fluidity. Back then most phones even flagships came loaded with bloatware and horrendous skins and stock android drained the least battery and got the fastest updates. None of that is true today.
Most UI’s today are as fast as stock Android and that includes MIUI. Even Huawei’s EMUI which is much more in your face than MIUI performs as good as stock android in terms of speed and battery life. Stock android doesn’t even guarantee the fastest update anymore. Several brands like Motorola that have launched phones under “Android One” have severely lagged behind in updates while brands like OnePlus get updates much faster.
Skins add so many unique, genuinely useful features that are absent in stock Android. I’m so used to these features now that going back to stock Android feels like i’m in the stone age. MIUI’s gestures put Oxygen OS and stock Android to shame. To do any amount of customization on stock Android, you need a launcher and i’d rather have an OEM skin on my phone than a launcher. The only thing i really customize is installing an icon pack but you can’t even do something as simple as that on stock Android without a third party launcher whereas MIUI allows you to choose an icon pack from the settings menu itself.
I could list all the features MIUI 10 has that stock Android doesn’t, i could talk about how in Linus’ video where he talked about his gripes with Pixel 3 that almost none of those gripes exist in MIUI, i could talk about how MIUI looks almost like stock Android and performs like it but i doubt that would make any difference. There seems to be a herd mentality within the tech community where everyone just brands something as bad without ever giving it a fair chance or even experiencing it and companies then rush to solve a problem that never existed. Like how people are for some reason sick of a perfectly placed fingerprint sensor on the back or on the power button so they’d rather have a laggy in-screen finger print sensor that doesn’t work if you have the tiniest amount of dust or grime on your fingers. It’s the same with stock Andoird.
Ads exist only in regions like India and Hong Kong and can be truned off in regular settings. If you set region on any European Union country you will never see ad. WTF is with people. They want to talk bad things about only company that actually makes really good phones for adorable price.
MIUI had problems but now its great. Somehow people can’t stand look of luncher and stupid things like that but they are ok with things like face id not working on custome ROM. Its just weird.
What ads never saw single app until I started using Hong Kong as region and than I just went to settings and turned off ads and never saw them again. Simple as that.
Personally I dont like MIUI 10 that much and I really want to go back to 9.6 since this was such a huge update. The whole UI looks foreign to me, like the backstage apps. MIUI always had swipe up to close backstage and suddenly they made it swipe sideways. Small things like this are already memorised in the muscle memory, so it feels very awkward. No idea why they wanted to do this, it feels completely different. (Also they prevented flashing past MIUI which I dont really get)
This is my experience, your mileage may vary.
When I bought my Mi 5s, MIUI cannot do sync and backup properly to Google, even if I use the Global version of the system/ROM.
Moreover, MIUI will still kill my apps even though I pinned them in the recents menu.
So I noped out of there and install LineageOS.
That was MIUI 8 and 9 (yes, I tried MIUI again despite my previous experience, still the same). Dunno and don’t care about MIUI 10.
Hmm I actually like MIUI quite a bit
sounds like a case-by-case, my father owns a mi5s and never had any problems with sync (email, youtube, etc)
I only had a problem with a GPS app called Here We Go (nokia app that i got used to) but google maps works perfectly
Actually all Xiaomi phones work in Canada, and have at least 1LTE band. I just checked.
US… a lot less bands available
IR is fixed now… probably will be updated in the next build 😀
Oh I didn’t know, incredible. Btw how is the setting to use the IR face unlock on Los?
I have have been using MIUI 10 for a few weeks and I don’t like it as much as 9. The most two noticeable things are no estimated time to full battery while charging and notification icons are all black and white instead of using the apps’ icons.
Yeah but the poco only has about 1 band per carrier for LTE meaning your odds of getting LTE speeds are going to be very inconsistent. If you don’t move much and are in the range of a tower that has the right band, then you’re golden.
Because it has too many animations and people think it is slow. At least that’s what i think. I’ve never really had an issue with it. In fact i got another mi iPhone simply because i liked the UI.
Hope you know you can scroll and take longer photos. That’s the party piece of the feature.
Me too.
Same here. The screenshot experience is amazing and even the messaging app is great. Lots of small features makes it great.
Yes and you can start sharing it immediately.
You can turn off animations in the Dev options.
I have one question. Did You use “adorable price” on purpose? I kept going back and wanted to read it as affordable. Anyway you are adorable.
Oh yeah! Thanks.
Flash magisk after??
this, miui is great. removing the stock miui apps makes the experience better.
Well, things like email notifications, youtube updates and contacts syncs somewhat timely, but other things like app backup (that you might want when you switch to other phones in the future to simplify the initial setup for your dad) is not.
Moreover, MIUI is still killing chat apps like WhatsApp and LINE despite I locked/pinned them. Also, I have this thing called syncthing to synchronize my files between machines that is also keep getting killed.
Yeah, maybe mine is an edge case, but that is what happening to me.
My brother and sister is using MIUI for their Redmi Note 3 Pro and Redmi Note 4 happily, so good for them, but it’s not for me.
YOU need to make sure when buying a xiaomi phone it has band 4 LTE.. it different all over the country, toronto uses some 7 but most of canada only use BAND 3 for LTE.. so if you buy a phone without it. enjoy your 3g speeds./
Band 3?
Band 3 is not mentioned anywhere in this article. If you have Band 4 and Band 7 you’re good.
My LOS isn’t laggy ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
>Things like the gesture navigation and the three finger swipe to take a screenshot are absolutely mechanized in my brain as of now.
You can do both in other ROMs too though
The process is similar but you need the custom recovery and roms for your specific device. The waiting time for unlocking might be significantly longer..
yes, i meant band 4 not 3.. we dont use much 7 in most of canada..
I’m really happy with it too
He hated the gestures and how none of the buttons allowed for customization. For example there is only two soft buttons. The spot on the right bottom corner was free and he wanted the ‘back’ button there but it wasn’t possible to modify. There were also straight up bugs
How? I don’t get it
3 finger swipe then click on the snapshot. If there is content beyond the screen space, you can click on scroll and select as much as you want.
People want an iPhone, an out of the box, non customizable, preconfigured, preoptimized device. But most either can’t afford one anymore with these retarded prices or they realized they can get a lot more shit for a lot less money. Ironically, the reason i was put off from MIUI in the beginning was it’s obvious desire to look like iOS.
PE > LOS sounds better to me.
I’ll preface this by saying that I’ve been using MIUI for around 2 years now on the Redmi Note 3 (kate) and Redmi Note 4 (mido) on MIUI 8, 9 and now 10. I enjoyed my experiences with these devices, I would have been happy to use my Note 4 for a few more years. Although MIUI is a decent skin for android, it’s main problem I’ve found was its aggressive RAM management.
TechUtopia made [some good](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jO_A4l4sxk), [detailed videos on this topic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3_Z8u_r9nE&t=888s), where he was experiencing apps closing very frequently on the 6GB variant of the Poco F1.
From my experience, Custom ROMs and kernels (that I tried), **did not help with the RAM management** ([vid 1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfTGYaWUFis), only [becoming normal after a reboot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIuCDFO8zRk)) and in my experience after 20 hours of up-time, [was worse than MIUI.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6q8Mq1kgDU) Note that this may be specific to only the RN4, and this issue might not be present on other Xiaomi devices with custom ROMS. I’ve written a very extensive comment about my experiences with custom ROMs on my Xiaomi devices which can be found [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/7cm35l/redmi_note_4x_my_comprehensive_review_and/dpy8rv2/) if you’re interested. There are just too many bugs on custom ROMs to use them as a daily driver.
You might not think it’s a big deal, and one might argue that you wouldn’t notice it in day-to-day use, but I strongly disagree. Here are some situations that I personally encountered where it really bothered me.
* I was messaging a friend to meet up at a location while simultaneously using Google Maps to navigate there by walking. I closed all my other apps and had 900MB free according to MIUI, but despite this, Google maps would reload everytime I switched back to it from my messaging app. Even locking the apps in memory as TechUtopia did in his video which did not help at all.
* Playing a game. I was called to do something, so I locked my phone expecting to come back to my game. Not even a minute had passed, when I unlocked my phone and found the game reloading.
* Apps can get killed off in the background. An example of which is Google Opinion Rewards. In my time owning the Redmi Note 3 and Note 4, I received only a few surveys. These always occurred after reinstalling Google Opinion Rewards after flashing a new custom ROM/going back to Stable/Global Dev. Ever since upgrading to the OnePlus 5T, I’ve received a survey every single day. How do I know this is specific to Xiaomi? I still carry my Note 4 around with me in the same pocket with the exact same apps as my 5T. While the OP5T received a survey, the Note 4 never gave me any.
These problems seem to be specific to the Xiaomi devices, since I didn’t have these issues on my Galaxy Note 3 (which had issues of its own), and my 1GB Xperia M.
Things that I had tried:
* Disabling app battery saver in MIUI 8 and 9 (it’s not available in MIUI 10). I didn’t notice any difference.
* Having all the apps I needed to be in memory set to autorun
* Disabling MIUI Optimisation – Converse to popular opinion on /r/Xiaomi, mi forums and XDA, this does nothing, in-fact, made the memory management considerably worse, to the point I couldn’t even hold 2 apps in memory. [This also makes DND unusable](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGC9qABOnkE). I suspect that this is outdated information from when MIUI 8 was out, as it seemed to have a beneficial effect on RAM management in MIUI 8, but Xiaomi may have changed something in MIUI 9, because it had the opposite effect in MIUI 9 and 10.
* Setting memory optimisation to off (MIUI 8 and 9). This was similar to turning off MIUI optimisation, setting it to off would result in the phone becoming extremely laggy and unresponsive after a few hours of uptime. Setting it to high would make the phone very smooth, I couldn’t tell the difference between it on high or medium. They have since removed the option in MIUI 10.
After getting used to this, I just accepted that my phone only holds 2-3 apps in memory at most
My theory is that MIUI is making a pagefile rather using the RAM, and when apps are reopened, it pulls it from the pagefile. Which explains why apps can reload to the exact spot you were on, but goes through the entire reloading animation again. I’ll upload a video if I get a chance, but can’t guarantee it since I’ll be extremely busy travelling in the coming months.
Actually prefer MIUI. Didn’t buy the Redmi A2 becuase it has that horrible google filled experience
To be able to bypass SafetyNet and use apps that depends on it.
Also, YouTube Vanced.
Used to hate MIUI but MIUI10 is quite good i reckon on par with any other OEM skin.
Pocofone has a gcam port with night sight support now
The monochromatic icons are sooo much prettier. Previously they were just ugly, man.
I got used to it almost immediately.
Oh sorry, you’re right. I thought he talked just about the pixel. Not the custom rom
Cool video and I enjoy the possibility that you can do such things with the phone. I will stick to MIUI 10 so far and if I want a change of things i will use the LawnChair V2 launcher.
I just find it inconvenient that I can’t tell what notifications I just receive at first glance.
First single-colour notification LED and now this, I feel like Xiaomi is going backwards on these QoL things, which IMO matter a lot more to the average user compared to powerful SoC or camera.
oh they switched to the monochrome icons finally? i hated that they were not used in previous versions, and the resized app icon looked awful in that size
Three fingers! I’ve been wondering how my toddler keeps doing screenshots…
I wanted to write affordable. But this was pretty funny. Prices are really adorable 😀
holy nuts i disabled the animations and it feels so weird to navigate around now. thanks for the tip either way.
Try keeping them at .5x. it will appear snappier and right so. Feels like a new phone. Haha. But I am not sure if it actually helps these days. I remember turning the animation off in my older phone running jelly bean/ I cream sandwich and making every thing fast.
> gesture navigation
Do you have examples of this? I use 3 finger screenshot, swipe from top to see notifications but are there more?
I can agree on the single-color LED bullshit.
Is there any option to get gestures like MIUI 10 on Pixel experience/LOS? For me MIUI gestures it’s best and I use it all the time ( even on Xiaomi mi 6 which have physical buttons )
Fluid
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb.fluid
Is there even a poco version with band 4 now?
Same, No Bottom buttons (full gestures) are the sole reason why I don’t go custom Roms. Gestures on miui are much better then Google implementation.
TBH google sync kinda sucks, better use titanium
Well, I use Titanium too, synced the backup folder to my mini pc/home server via syncthing. It’s just the one from Google is simpler, I don’t have to root my new phone to do a restore from backup.
When you take a screenshot, you get that little floating screenshot at the top right corner.
Tap on it and one of the options at the bottom is “Scroll”. When you tap on it, the screenshot starts scrolling and you can decide when to stop (provided the app is supported). You would get a longer screenshot – simple.
IMO, it’s the memory management. It’s too aggressive. You need to lock every app in memory via recents otherwise MIUI will happily kill them off, resulting in missed emails and notifications and such. And also enable Autostart manually in the App management.
With that said, I still use it – it’s a much more polished and complete experience. I used to be all about custom ROM’s and modding, but that was years ago and now I’m a grown adult with better things to do lol
it’s full of bugs and filled with bloatware.. also to unlock the bootloader is a pain in the ass
It works through smart lock
Linus is retarded.
MIUI is superior in every respect to the stock android.
Matter of taste but I can’t stand the design of MIUI and how ingrained it is with the Xiaomi ecosystem
MIUI is so flexible that you can theme it and change how it behaves on so many levels. More so then any other “skin”. You can emulate oxigen os or google stock ui , samsung ui or create your own.
2 months late linus, and seriously until lineage can use the IR camera, its kinda kill one of the best features of the pocophone f1, the fast and secure face unlock
Can’t change the pop ups, can’t change the status bar, can’t delete all Xiaomi references (apps and the like) only disable them, can’t change the general UI to look like Stock Android, can’t disable not having to log in to a xiaomi account after doing a clean wipe. Can’t synchronize my google account properly, can’t download my apps from play store automatically, poor google assistant support. No android Pie support on Redmi 5 plus (several custom ROMs already have this). Poor autocomplete feature in comparison to android Pie. Poor google cam mod support on Redmi 5 plus.
Those few things kill it for me, MIUI looks good and the gestures are the best bar none, it is just not my cup of tea from a design and usability stand point.
custom roms finally fix it?
Yup, check out latest Los and PE… IR already patched 🙂
It also has worse battery life so… Pixel experience after all
That’s a different device so results will vary. PE for poco has been a bit of a shit show
How do you get MIUI’s gestures on other roms? As far as I know the only one that has similar gestures is EMUI. All other gestures suck compared to the ones from MIUI.
Man I really miss colored icons. I would trade them for gesture navigation any day though.
Gesture control https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.conena.navigation.gesture.control
I have it in use on Pixel Experience, works like charm
Check out Fluid NG
Bloat? Nothing that’s not uninstallable. Bugs? Yes. By the bushelful. Unlocking the bootloader isn’t difficult at all.
Xiaomi’s one of the few pro-dev OEMs in the business today.
They have their fair share of faults but if you’re going to criticize them, at least do it for the right reasons.
Ummm…that’s kind of the point.
Exactly, that’s why I said “matter of taste”
I feel like the opposite is true. Everything in miui10 takes up too much space, making every single task extra cumbersome. Screw the new notification screen.
are you even a MIUI user?!
Pocophone looks great! Could you make a similar transformation using a Mi 8 lite phone? Just on the surface the spec’s look slightly lower than a Pocophone but still decent? Since the phone is in the same product line could you use a Mi 8 lite?
Looking at the specs the lite seems pretty decent as well!
Are the phones similar enough?
I liked stock MIUI on my previous Xiaomi phones. I found the features and functions quite useful and user friendly! Having said that, a small gripe would be that it would be nice if I could disable a few more of the supplied apps!
PE too?
What is that?
You need to see it to believe it.
The pixel 3 and now the other pixels have received a software update that added another camera mode. Night sight.
It allows you to take photos in the dark and make things visible you wouldn’t see yourself. Very advanced computing involved.
That was ported already to two xiaomi phones. Probably not as good but gonna be amazing still.
Amen, this is exactly how I feel too.
What about the camera quality thing?
