I am looking at my cellphone right now (Redmi Note 6 Pro) And I realised how lucky I am that xiaomi exists, yes there might be some problems from time to time but lets not forget that xiaomi is the revolution right now in mobile phones, the money you give for the specs their phones have is out of this world, i can never imagine right now to own a Samsung or Huawei, their phones are a total rip off especially Samsung.. I am not a fanboy or something I just believe the best choice I did back in 2017 is to buy a redmi 4a, since then I wont change xiaomi.
Support XiaomiEnlightened
True, yet you see whining on this subreddit everyday. People are never happy!
…As long as they have Google Play Services. Let’s pray that the US doesn’t start weeding out the competition
Xiaomi are among the best devices around. I’ve been using those since over 5 years. And the prices are simply from another world. You just have to realize that Xiaomi is not a tech company but a data company. Once you’ve realized this, you are ready for tune up your device accordingly.
Xiaomi was my first affordable that was good enough. Back in 2014, I broke my Samsung Note 3 and Samsung wanted to charge me 800 MYR (around 200 USD) for the screen repair. Instead I bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 1 for around 500 MYR and it lasted me around 2 years before I switched to another Xiaomi.
What’s left for Google if they keep doing that? They shoved out Huawei, if they shove out Xiaomi too then they are losing a huge part of the market.
The US gov makes money from the taxes huge companies like Google pay, so intentionally hurting them financially twice doesn’t seem like a good idea to me.
Mi9t first xiaomi phone and never going back to any other brand
Exactly how I felt when I bought my Redmi Note [4/128 GB] and even upto now.
How are their laptops though? Am thinking of going ecosystem.
Agreed. Without Xiaomi, the budget and midrange market will probably be filled with crappy phones now. Xiaomi’s entry into the market not only gave us cheap phones that are good enough for daily use, but also caused its competitors to launch their own budget and midrange phones in response, such as Samsung with their A and M series, the creation of Realme, giving consumers good phones and wider range of options at a lower price.
Their phones are great indeed, but remember that everything comes with a cost.
Hold up. Data company?
The cost is a slightly worse software experience than other phones, but still better and with less bloatware than Samsung in my opinion. Xiaomi also lets you unlock the bootloader super easily, on Samsung it’s not possible at all, and other chinese brands like huawei don’t let you do that either. I’d say it’s perfect for the average user who doesn’t care about a little bit of bloatware and also for advanced users that knows how to tune their software experience.
I doubt the longer life cycle, especially in terms of os updates
They make money off the software, not so much the hardware
Like you mean MIUI? No wonder they keep the prices low if hardware isn’t their main selling point.
People get complacent naturally. 3-4 years ago it would’ve been unthinkable to get a phone so good for this price. I’m glad they exist.
They use the hardware (which iirc has very low profit margins, ~5% I believe, which is why their phones are so cheap) to draw in people to use their software, and also buy into their ecosystem
While this is a solid argument, don’t forget about the fact that they are in an economic war with china so even if they hurt themselves a bit they hurt China even more by doing so. Personally I really hope that they don’t do that because I just love my Mi 10 lite 5G
My xiaomi mi mix2s bricked itself, replaced battery to no avail. No warranty and no US presence so no chance of repair. Never again
Happy someone thinks this way. I am also very thankful they exist.
I have a phone I love (Mi Note 10 Lite) for 250 euros, a phone like this will cost me at least 500 euros from Samsung or other brands.
Thanks Xiaomi
Xiaomi provides 3 major MIUI updates
Huawei are great.
Huawei and Xiaomi are completely different.
Huawei actually had a market share in the USA, collaborated with Google on the Nexus 6P and we making their own Kirin chips. That was the big issue; they were beating America at their own game with their own chips and taking market share.
Xiaomi on the other hand don’t even attempt to compete in the USA, they effectively aren’t in the USA at all, only grey imports exist. They don’t have US LTE bands maybe even on purpose so they can’t anger the US.
Xiaomi also use Snapdragon and Mediatek which the USA is fine with given that is American / Taiwanese, America is fine with Exynos and Mediatek of course because they are big allies (technically Taiwan isn’t but it actually is of course it’s just the One-China Principle pressure and One-China Policy that was made in response to it). America of course abides by the One-China Policy but also the Six Assurances given to Taiwan in “secret” back in 1982.
Huawei R&D budget is many times bigger than Xiaomi. They also dominate 5G patent and a lead in 5G which can extend to 6G. Xiaomi on the other hand is harmless to American tech supremacy. They’re a commodity company.
Their laptop is not exactly part of the ecosystem. I have a number of their ecosystem products (air purifier which works great!)
of all the phones you got one of the worst phones. with s huge notch. i own rn5 anf rn8.
Not only related to phones, I have so many home appliances from Xiaomi. Incredibly good quality for a reasonable price
Huawei 5G tipped it over the edge yeah
Mi 9 Lite user here, Xiaomi is still a well rounded company ever existed, and it’s also my first Xiaomi I have ever bought!
Up in canada our government has been ruining our industry and business are leaving… It’s crap.
I imagine Google could do the same thing
You’re right. After using my Redmi Note 6 Pro for 1½ years, it’s still running smooth, and gives me an SOT of 7-7.5 hours. Camera has started to lag and phone gets hot while using it when the fan/AC is off.
Galaxy A3 & A5 (2015) – One OS update, Android 6>7, No UI updates
Mi Note 3 (2016) – Two OS Updates (Rolled as MiUi) MiUI 9>10>11. so technically One OS update and two UI updates.
Samsung’s premium range get “slightly” better support than my middish range examples. Putting them maybe a nose ahead. For an extra $300/$400 maybe.
That’s exactly what I was trying to say.
Xiaomi is excellent in terms of updates, especially considering the price
Cost is also less reliable privacy statements and ads on some phones.
You know I agree 100%.
Yeah well ways phones are amazing but to be fair they’re pricey and with the problems going on with Google and China and Huawei unfortunately I don’t think that in North America were going to be able to have access to the Google app store using a Huawei device which is a shame
If you have to mention ads Samsung has those too, OnePlus was beginning to show them but I’m not sure if they stopped. Privacy… If you dislike the Chinese I guess it could be a point, but unless you go microg or something like that is not worth even thinking about it. Also that’s what I mean when I say advanced users, if you’re really interested in privacy you probably want an unlockable bootloader to degoogle or at least flash aosp roms
Lol which means nothing. What you want is android and security updates, not useless new versions of miui.
And the ads in the software (e.g file explorer). All of that is a pet of it. It’s services. Check and see, everything to do with Xiaomi you have to agree to use the Security App, the clock has internet services as well.
I was so happy to discover Xiaomi and rocked my Redmi for a few years. I loved the value that most Xiaomi devices offer.
But I can’t support the backdoors anymore, and will no longer buy Xiaomi products. It’s too bad.
Isn’t that the mi note 10 lite though..??
Love Xiaomi stuff – I have phones and their home automation stuff: excellent office and excellent quality.
It started with a Mi Note Pro which I bought in Guangzhou when I was there on business. Since then the Mi Stores have opened in HK (where I also go to regularly) and I’ve bought some on import to the UK.
I have had one or more of:
Mi Note Pro
Mi Note 2
Redmi Note 4
Redmi Note 7
Redmi Note 8 Pro
Mi 5
Mi 6
Mi 9
Pocophone F1
bought variously for self, friends and family. All excellent. Won’t buy any other make.
One thing I don’t understand is all this stuff about ads. Unless I am missing something, I have never had ads nor have I heard anyone else I bought a phone for having them foisted upon them.
Yeah but they don’t update mi mix 3 5g lol
I like my Redmi Note 9S a lot. Great battery life, big screen, large internal storage and SD expandable but there are some things that kinda suck.
There’s a WiFi bug, affecting Note 9S that still hasn’t been fixed. I bought the phone 6 months ago and I’ve had regular updates but nothing has fixed the issue. Can see other people raising the issue in Amazon ratings.
The issue is that while the phone is asleep, it will stay connected to WiFi but there’ll be no internet connection. When waking up the phone, the procedure is to turn WiFi off and back on again – every time the phone screen is switched off for more than 5 minutes. It’s not the end of the world but I’m disappointed that it still hasn’t been fixed. I’m hoping that the upcoming (I hope) MIUI 12 OS update fixes this.
Also, having to ADB disable/remove baked in things and turn off ad delivery everywhere was kinda annoying. On a positive note, I haven’t needed to redo this, so at least it’s a one time inconvenience.
But I 100% agree with your main point – the value is exceptional.
Awful MIUI12 rollout deserves this?
agreed, insane that people are still paying over $1000 for a phone these days
Not surprising. That’s how Google does it and Apple is going into services as well now.
Google: I can give you a suite of services.
Apple: I can provide a (sort of) connected family of synced devices.
Samsung: I can supply your office and spice up your home.
Xiaomi: I can build your entire house!(transport and wardrobe included)
Xiaomi was the revolution… That belongs to BBK now: Oppo, Vivo, 1+ and realme are doing a better job
After i debloated my mi 9t pro, im really happy with it. Sot is not the best after miui13 update, but it is acceptable 4 to 6 hours.
Indeed huawei was great back in the days when they were also a little bit different from other brands. Like they were releasing the Ascend P6. It was just so thin phone with aluminium frame and beautiful disain etc. After that huawei is competiting with samsung and nothing more.
Huawei was targeted by the US because of their market share in 5G network equipment, and the possibility that China would have access to mobile networks through Huawei’s network equipment. It had nothing to do with their smartphone business.
Xiaomi doesn’t make or sell network equipment.
And most of the general public doesnt concern on which Android version they are. If those people are verbal about it on social networking sites, and some on technical forums, they are just hopping on the bandwagon. Again, ‘most’, ‘social networking sites’.
Big companies don’t pay very much in taxes.
They have amazing price to performance and often have metal builds in the low end unlike other brands
they are way more powerful than samsung until the recent issues for the money
Incorrect, they make money frim their hardware and through advertising.
Love my Note 7,I would have maybe stuck with Huawei if not for the Cheeto in charge…but I am glad I hopped over, very solid products.
They do have consumer level gear – mostly wifi network equipment.
Fanboys will be fanboys. Let’s stop to appreciate the world isn’t completely full of such buffoons.
I went from note 6 pro to note 7 pro to Mi9T Pro and hopefully I’ll be able to get the Black Shark 3 Pro around Xmas.
Will not buy anything other than Xiaomi.
you want oled, buy Mi series, you will never see oled in Redmi phone. That’s how Xiaomi distinguish premium vs mid tier phone.
Their Honor lineup is for price conscious costumers.
They were alright until recently when they started forcing many ads and getting way too much information from us, like Google wasn’t enough.
Eh. I have the original 13.3″ air laptop, and recommended it to a friend who bought the second gen. Both of us had issues with the screen occasionally showing dead lines for a few weeks (over a year in), which magically went away (probably humidity affecting the display connector since we’re in humid environments).
The battery life is just really poor, I get around 1.5 – 2 hours now with processor limited to 50% speed and my friends isn’t much better. It was under 3 hours at the time of purchase and has lost 50% capacity in 3 years.
After 2.5 years, the graphics card is tripping the heat throttle whenever it’s used, even if the CPU and GPU are under 60°C. Not sure if the thermal paste needs re-applying or whether there’s a larger physical fault inside somewhere.
Upsides are the keyboard is lovely, the speaker is great and the screens are high quality (though the bezels are a bit thick by 2020 standards).
I don’t regret buying it because I actually don’t use it on battery much, but I did end up replacing it after 3 years, which isn’t stellar.
Yeah same here. Had a go with Iphone 7 Plus for a while back. Bought it for RM 1400. Then upgraded to the Mi 9T Pro for only RM 1480 l. A RM 80 difference but vastly upgraded hardware and software. Still using the OG Redmi Note 4 as a secondary device which I bought for RM 480 back in 2017.
Considering that the iPhone 7 Plus was around RM 3k plus at launch. Makes me think of how valuable Xiaomi existence is to counter the idea that you need to spend upwards of RM 3K to have a good experience.
Why did you replace battery? You had no reason to do that.. Since it is difficult to do , I guess a tech store did that?
Whoa, expected more tinfoil heavy debloaters
Ya lor. Thanks to Xiaomi, I managed to buy my parents affordable relatively good quality phones. I bought a discounted Vivo for my mom but I am still grateful to Xiaomi. Without Xiaomi, there would not be a Vivo and Realme.
My fav Xiaomi products that I own are
1) the smart home system. Use it as a home alarm system when we go to bed. Amazing.
2) miband4, excellent value smart band
3) redmi airdots, perfect for gym
4) Bluetooth alarm clock speaker.
Bought the Xiaomi Mi A1 at launch day and never turned my back to any other names out there. Years later I’m now on Poco F2 Pro and loving their flagship tier specs at a very affordable price
this argument! i heard it many times but it makes no sense.. 5%? so my 9t cost them 350€ -5% =~ 330€ ?
even when you consider that the actual manufacturer wants some profit, it would be somewhere around at least 100-150%…
i bet xiaomi would be able to make better deals than to leave most money to some manufacturer
Yes you are right. This 5% dialogue is fan boy dialogues. They easily make profits and also makes a lot of money from software services.
My first mobile phone is Xiaomi 3 (2014), but its motherboard burned in 2016. Now I am using Xiaomi 8 SE (2018). What I can tell you is that Xiaomi doesn’t make profits in hardware, it always provides good products at low prices (High CP value). You need to know not every Chinese can afford a phone with 2000-3000 RMB ($300-$400) or more, especially for the middle or high school students. From 2013 to 2017, the flagship phones of Xiaomi were always below 2000RMB, while other brand phones with similar equipment were over 2500 or even 3000RMB. For those who are too poor to own smartphones (Don’t laugh, some Chinese only earn $10 or less a day), Xiaomi even provides the cheapest smartphone (600-700 RMB) but functional.
**Always Believe That Something Wonderful Is About To Happen**
No doubt better than Xiaomi now. In the past they were assholes. But last few years they are good. Xiaomi just give miui updates which doesn’t make any sense. Security patches and android version remains same. Take redmi note 4 which was a popular device stucked in nov 2018 security patch. Phone was launched in 2017 only. Getting miui updates changes nothing other than theme change, when security patch and android version remains same. Galaxy m20 etc got android 10 way back in dec 2019 where as the note 7 which launched at the same time still on partial roll out.
Companies like Xiaomi, Huawei, TCL all make sure other companies like Samsung and Apple can’t keep sucking blood. Technologically, a Xiaomi is as good as Samsung, or Apple. That said, the only problem I have with Xiaomi is stupid ads they push, increasing the price a bit and dropping these ads would make it so much easier to recommend these phones.
I was just trying to explain how Xiaomi devices that seem equally good to other phones are somehow so much cheaper, and a small profit margin made a lot of sense, especially seeing how xiaomi pushes for software revenue a lot
When you say 100-150% profit, do you mean profit overall for every single step or profit simply for xiaomi? And if not then otherwise why would xiaomi be able to price their phones that much cheaper than the competition?
Honestly just curious to know
i think other manufacturer make at least 200% per phone and yes xiaomi probably makes less but no way they only take 5 %
I see
Oh xiaomi phones are great with a custom rom! The second you choose to leave MIUI on there… Not so great.
This was exactly my point 😉 which rom is has your preference (and for what model?)
Msm Xtended right now for customizability, on mi 9t Davinci.
Mi 10 lite 5g then? Battery isn’t horrifically big, but 4160mah is definitely solid. Especially with an AMOLED screen.
Oh shit. Yeah even in South Africa where I’m from, getting a mi branded device instead of redmi is tough… Check places like Facebook marketplace and OLX. There are independent importers everywhere where you might find one.
I was very skeptical regarding Xiaomi products, but I confess that we do have to apreciatte the way that Xiaomi handles prices with amazing quality products.
I don’t plan to choose another brand anytime soon.
I’m scrolling through my comment history lol. I replaced the battery because the device was not charging, and if/when it would charge, it would die prematurely. I figured it was due to the battery.. and no I replaced it myself
I gave my mi mix2 to my daughter as a second phone after I had it for 2 years..
Still working fine with a battery replacement..
