Any reason why my Xiaomi Robot Vacuum uploads 11.5GB of data per month to the internet?

The data is being uploaded to Xiaomi servers I guess. Most likely so you have access to the data from your app.
Maybe xiaomi wants to know your flat layout for something.
No that is a very good point. I can only make the suggestion that the vac is doing this. Maybe there is a setting to change this? I suppose it is just auto syncing on a daily basis. and the upload is done to replace the existing file (bu its ultimately the same cause the ac hasnt done anything).
check the settings on mihome (i think thats the app) and see if anything can be changed.
Sorry, im afraid i cant really be of much help beyond this suggestion.
Try reading on how to intercept and interpret data packets, maybe if you dig into this you will really find something.
Xiaomi injects bloatwares in every product they sell. These bloatwares heavily mine data and the collected data are sold to their advertisement partners, this is how they are selling devices for so cheap prices. Also AFAIK, Chinese government has issued a circular for IT companies in China to mine data as much as possible.
if it was just personal data then it wouldn’t fill 10 GB
I’m sorry I have to ask. What possible reason is there for a vacuum cleaner to have an internet connection? Remote activation? Firmware updates? Some schedule system sync? Almost 12gb is a lot for a flippin’ vacuum cleaner even if it’s some tiny .xml file being uploaded over and over again.
I have noticed this with several smart home products as well three months running my smart home power strip had taken the crown with 750-1gb of upload data. I can’t fathom what the he’ll it’s doing.
> What possible reason is there for a vacuum cleaner to have an internet connection?
I can turn mine on from anywhere in the world. I get live maps of it’s scanning progress.
the hell 15gb thats a ton of data
probably a video camera in it
are you vacuuming every day?
stop vacuuming on one day to see if it stops. that will help
1. how often are you cleaning
1. how many m^2 is the clean?
1. how many minutes does it take (both are in maps/history)
1. are you watching it live? (via the app)
1. which vacuum are you using?
once you’ve given that info, i’ll run mine and see what numbers i get.
EDIT: check all your settings to see if you’re part of a beta release too. What tell us your firmwares and software versions
Doesn’t the vacuum remap the house layout every time it cleans? I’ve got the first version without the mop feature and that’s how it works.
>the hell 15gb thats a ton of data
11GB, not 15. It’s <400mb/day
>probably a video camera in it
no.
it’s probably uploading pcd files, which can get pretty insane.
lol your comment is controversial, i guess xiaomi fanboys are disliking it.
Even if there was all that bundled in, 11gb seems like A LOT
It sends home way more data then it needs to. The robot logs stuff about your WiFi usage as well and sends it to Xiaomi.
You can root the vacuum and gain access to it’s operating system. You can then turn off its uploads. Check out this video on how to hack it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhyM-bhzFsI
What if it’s sending data that’s it’s sniffing on the LAN?
the map of my entire city is less than 0.5gb
How big is your house, texas size?
Yes it is a lot. I feel like I made a mistake by buying a Xiaomi product. I currently have a Mi A2 and it has many bugs and Xiaomi doesn’t seem to acknowledge any of it. There are also some shady apps in the stock android one phone which cannot be uninstalled.
Xi Jinping
Shady apps like what?
It’s for Xi’s eyes only
While I find your comment funny, I doubt 3D map of whole city with every wall and stuff will be 0.5gb.
Isn’t vacuum cleaner supposed to know where the walls and obsticles are all the time? That wouldn’t be simple 2D map.
Your data is worth money. Nowadays we collect any data possible. You don’t know how much your data is worth…
Actually 500MB is a lot, should definitely be possible!
Because it has 0 sources in there dude
Maybe a bug? Like the Google News app lately
From memory my vaccuming area is 40sqm.
However, the vacuum map is not a 2D raster, it’s a point cloud that get’s more data points as it goes around. That’s why right at the start of the clean you get “shadows” of data points far away, which improves the more it travels around the house.
There are some youtube videos where they’ve reverse engineered the sensor to find it’s collecting a lot of point data. https://youtu.be/4sQCz75BfrM?t=248 If you pause you can see it’s collecting a data point every degree of movement, and doing this a few times a second. I’ve calculated it’s probably collected 90,000 data points.
It collects data point to generate a map, that also how google maps work, they collect a TB of data to make a map, but that doesn’t mean that maps is also TB of data
Does it have GPS ? If yes, then throw it.
Hey what app is this you use to do this?
>they collect a TB of data to make a map, but that doesn’t mean that maps is also TB of data
sure, after it’s been processed. During the collection stage they’re collecting hundreds of gigs of data. Same with the vacuum, it’s collecting 1500 data points a second. they have to consolidate the data prior to mapping. It looks like they’re binning/averaging the data or something to make it easier to calculate with the on board processor.
You understand how Google infers roads as a straight line right? Set up a vertical laser level on the gutter of a straight road (according to google). It won’t be perfectly straight like the map implies.
We’ve got a laser scanner at work. It produces a 20mb [point cloud] file per sqm. On the back end it’s reduced from about 200mb, so there is some smoothing/binning/whatever going on behind the scenes.
Wow, you are giving Xiaomi the fault for having android one, where they have no influence on the bugs or stock apps? I’m sorry to say this, but do you have any clue of tech or are you just another uneducated conspiracy theorist that believes his definitely-not-spying government?
i loll’d
>president ping pong
Citizen score reduced to 0.0, you have been banished from the People’s Republic of China.
Expect consequences.
Maybe it have wifi sniffer installed, it encrypts the sensitive information and sends it to china. Completely speculative, and I like my Xiaomi products, but this is shady AF. Few MB, sure. 10 gigs? Nah fuck that I would definitely opt out of this experience, even if it means going to some other company.
I’m sorry, but the A2 essentially has little to do with Xiaomi except for the hardware. It runs android one, which is controlled by Google.
So what your are saying doesn’t make so much sense.
Edit: to clarify: I wanted to explain that the issues you are having are likely not xiaomis fault (alone).
Data collection and invading your privacy.
That’s how xiomi makes money
Can you provide any pictures?
He’s talking about android one though, not MIUI
Xiaomi absolutely have control over bugs, they still build AOSP.
Xiaomi are still responsible for making the software work on their hardware
That’s as true to xiaomi as to any company… All you need to have is Facebook and Google, among others…
Even if you have a package sniffer you would need to know the protocol to get any useful information from that.
Probably the best idea would be if Xiaomi would respond to this..
Just checked mine, 130mb in the last 30 days, same model as yours
Expect relevant consequences.
Know the lingo.
Therefore probably a bug, or he is being targeted
Well, it might be hacked like many iot devices and used to mine crypto or do ddos attacks
CHINESE SPECIAL FORCES
OPEN UP!!!!
Yeah, but the drivers for the parts are usually handled by the manufacturer. Xiaomi could still fuck up their little own code, so I admit it is possible to have bugs, albeit not likely.
No need, the robot will be remotely activated, unfold its secret legs and arms, and open the door from the inside.
this guy knows
Pooh is that you?
I typed that from a Xiaomi device so I’d like to take this opportunity to say ni hao to the Chinese special forces.
I agree that this would be the easiest course of action, but who says they will have an answer or will they be even willing to provide it. Anyhow, the community might have someone proficient enough to interpret what the vacuum is sending and why.
Telemetry I guess. Learns shit by getting data. That’s how VACNET works for example
>Also AFAIK, Chinese government has issued a circular for IT companies in China to mine data as much as possible.
So like PRISM?
Are you sure you wanted to reply to my comment?
Xiaomi still have to interface with those drivers.
That’s how it probably gets rid of the trash. coming to think of it it’s brilliant new idea
that’s the way the calculate your social credit
They do
I don’t think it can really be anything else. There is no possible way a vacuum can generate 11.5GB of data on it’s own.
Allowing them to track electrical usage across “China”, the same way they use the air purifiers to tell you country wide indoor air quality.
That’s my guess.
And I say “China”, cause all 41 of my xiaomi smart devices are set to think they are in mainland China.
Maybe you have limited edition of this Vacuum cleaner with hidden cam and mic?
To be clear, this is the robot itself right? Not the Mi Home app? The robot can, by itself, upload data to the internet, right?
How to I check this?
That vacuum robot started to speak in Chinese few days ago at 2am while I was sleeping. Scared me the fuck out. I’m still wondering what happened.
Because Google and China want to know everything you do, and every place you visit.
Because serving ads is what make their business.
That’s what I said… Why do you keep pushing the same point?
You seem to be misunderstanding how stock Android works. I mean, just scroll through new on this sub and you’ll see all sorts of people having issues with Android One. There’s definitely issues that’s up to Xiaomi to fix, and they’re not rare.
Its sending Wifi, SSIDs & Passwords, location, and Lidar maps of your home to Beijing. Wow.
Google wifi companion app
You’ve been invited to a mandatory “”””””vocational”””””” camp.
I can confirm this!!! Just checked my robot data usage, and it is 10 FREAKING GB UPLOAD in the last 30 days. Serious question for OP, do you feel like your online ad adapts based on your in-home conversation? For a long time, I feel like the online ad I see (mostly Hulu) adapt insanely precise and fast to the conversations between me and my gf (like within 10 mins). So I suspected that something in our home was listening. I just check all my other connected devices and none uploads so much data. But does the vac robot even has a mic???
Edit: typo
OP is not a sole case. Just checked mine, the vac uploaded 10GB data last month
Shit! The more I think about it the scarier it gets!
I am not promoting any conspiracy theory here, but gets this: Me and my gf speak a mixture of Mandarin and English at home, and we live in New York. I never really understood how Hulu knows to show me car insurance ad just minutes after we talked about that in MANDARIN CHINESE! (I doubt our HomePod would be listening to Mandarin conversation, especially a mixture of Mandarin and English). But if the Xiaomi vac robot has been listening, then it would make perfect sense! I am so freaking paranoid now!
I’ll get you, then you’ll have to use the Google Wi-Fi router.
nice try roomba
Are you using the Chinese servers?
herro
Well that’s interesting… Wonder who has access to that data (\*cough\* Chinese government \*cough\*)
Why does your vacuum use data? LMAO!!
First off, I would not recommend buying something like that. Should disable the MAC address in your modem. The hell with that!
as you mentioned, it is not sold in US, so it might be trying to reach the server while xiaomi server treat oversea requests differently, causing the bot to constantly retry, which fit into an almost uniform data amount day to day. Does it works without an internet connection?
Sure it can, 3d maps are big and it might be a new one every time the vacuum cleaner is used
> But does the vac robot even has a mic???
no
automatic firmware upgrade.
that’s what they want you to think, the truth is it has 20 cameras, 40 mics and even a gps module to make sure everything can be traced back perfectly /s
sadly, many people here would accept that as fact, even with the /s
Damn..
Big relative to text files, but not *that* big. 11.5GB is six 1080p movies at decent compression.
*You are now banned from /r/china*
Ever heard of the Cloud? Now you know where they store it. Through millions of access points.
A processed, “vector” map sure is. A shit load of raw distances and timestamps should be exponentially heavier, I assume. Sends it to the cloud, gets processed and returns a usable map.
I don’t pay Facebook or Google to vacuum my house.
True…but they still vacuum your data…
Probably saving the layout to your room so it knows where to go. Probably no internal storage I’m a vacuum
Perhaps only your DNA being uploaded to some lab somewhere. Nothing to be too worried about 😉😅
I have this very similar concern.
1.5kbps upload for long period of time. Uploading a map when it’s not being used is not sufficient.
None of this explains why data is being uploaded when not in use. Map has been created, successful use of said map, yet even when done, data is being uploaded. Does not compute.
